Music in the Hunter 2014
Music in the Hunter 2014 Sponsored by Constable Estate Vineyards First Creek Winery, Pokolbin, NSW 12-14 September 2014 Goldner String Quartet at the Music in the Hunter Festival (photo by Amelia Smiles). Dear Friends, As we approach our 23rd Music in the Hunter Festival I find myself reflecting on the achievements in these years. Our specialty at every festival has been performance of the traditional masterworks of the chamber repertoire. Had you attended all the festivals in those years you would have heard the criticallyacclaimed Goldner String Quartet perform an astonishing number of the great classics with an impressive list of guest artists from around Australia and the world. By popular demand, this year we enthusiastically welcome back the amazing Australian pianist, Piers Lane, to the festival. Piers is one of the busiest pianists around today with a prodigious repertoire. He is now based in the UK but frequently comes to Australia for concert tours with Australian orchestras and to oversee the annual Australian Festival of Chamber Music of which he is the Artistic Director. He and the Goldner Quartet have become a formidable recording team and have now produced seven CD’s together for the Hyperion label. We would also like to welcome back the master of the classical accordion, James Crabb, whose extraordinary musicianship and versatility has helped propel this instrument into the forefront of mainstream concert life. His combination of an inquiring mind, musical intelligence and virtuosic flair, have culminated in many successful musical projects and an international performing career. This year we will all collaborate in various combinations with music by Beethoven, Bach, Schubert, and Cesar Franck amongst others. A sub-theme to this year’s event will be to explore music by Jewish composers. Two examples are the Australian composer, Arthur Benjamin and Eric Wolfgang Korngold, composer of numerous film scores for Hollywood during the 1930’s. and 1940’s, and who has been a profound influence on all film music since that time. Both these composers of Jewish background made their careers far from their countries of birth for different reasons. We also welcome back Ken Healey as pre-concert speaker at this festival. Ken’s professional life has been shared between reviewing the performing arts as a critic, and celebrating them as a journalist, producer, teacher, script writer, occasional performer, and increasingly in recent years, as a pre-concert speaker. As always, we are grateful for the ongoing support of David Constable and Ida Lichter, without whom this festival could not succeed. I hope that during this weekend we can find the time to renew old acquaintances and make news friends. This year’s event will offer for you the quintessential chamber music experience in intimate and convivial surroundings with the customary culinary delights to follow every concert. Please join us again on September 12th in the beautiful Hunter Valley. The programme is as follows: Friday 12 September 2014 11.00am 11.30am 12.45pm Arrival Lecture Lunch Number of places are limited. Music and Jewellery: the Language of Love Gold jewellery played an integral role in the religious and ceremonial lives of both men and women in the ancient world, but it was accepted that women wore jewellery for status and to attract the opposite sex. Jewellery symbolised the language of love - has anything changed? Figures from Greek mythology - Apollo, Eros, the Muses, Orpheus, Pan and the Sirens - were often depicted in jewellery designs. They were accompanied by their musical instruments, the kithara, lyre, syrinx, aulos and cymbals. This paper traces the history and continuing popularity of musical motifs in jewellery from ancient times to the present and discusses why there is such an enduring relationship between music and human emotions. Music as a model of falling in love corresponds to a surrendering to the pleasure of the senses. In the words of the Duke in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night: ‘If music be the food of love play on’. Dr Monica M. Jackson The University of Sydney Monica M. Jackson is a classical archaeologist and a Research Associate in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sydney.
