AMARYLLIS
Amaryllis are one of the most spectacular and beautiful of the spring flow ering
bulbs. They are universally grown throughout the United States. In the Deep South
they may be grown and flowered out of doors. In all parts of •he country they are successfully grown indoors in pots for late winter and early spring flowers . Since they are
perennials the purchase of an amaryllis bulb represents a long time investment in
beauty and pleasure.
The Ludwig Strain of named Dutch hybrids will be received from Holland in November.
Since the Ludwig varieties will be shipped from Holla nd in the middle of October
the final order to these exporters must leave Baton Rouge on October 1st. Every season
a number of customers are disappointed in receiving the varieties which they wanted
because they waited too late to order, so please order early this season.
Amaryllis bulbs make nice Christmas presents to friends and relatives who are
flower lovers. Send your gift card along with shipping instructions to this nursery. At
the proper time your card will be mailed along with the bulbs directly to the person
for whom the gift is intended.
Red leaf spot or red fire, caused by the fungus Stagonospo'Y'a curtisii, has become
wide-spread throughout the country and it seems to be present on many of the imported
bulbs. To eliminate the bulb-borne phase of this disease it is recommended that dormant
bulbs be s oaked for two hours in a solution of one ounce of commercial formaldehyde to
about llh gallons of water. The severity of the disease on the foliage may be lessened
by spraying the plants at weekly intervals with neutral copper, "Captan" or "Fermate"
at the rate of 1 ounce to 2 gallons of water.
Dutch hybrid Amaryllis are of a full, fiat, rounded form. Usually there are two
scapes per bulb and three to four 8" flowers on each scape.

NO GUARANTEE OF VARIETIES. The growers and exporters in Holland are
considered to be reliable, but occasionally a few bulbs are found to be incorrectly labeled.
The exporters do not guarantee their bulbs as to variety, and this obligation cannot be
assumed by the retail dealer who has never seen the bulbs in flower. Orders will be
scrupulously filled in accordance with the labels on the bulbs when they are received,
but this nursery makes no guarantee that the bulbs were correctly labeled in Holland.

AMARYLLIS SPECIES
In recent years there has been an increasing interest in Amaryllis species. From
time to time shipments of bulbs of the species are received from Dr. Martin Cardenas,
Head of the Department of Botany, Universidad Mayor de San Simon, Cochabama,
Bolivia, as he finds them on his plant explorations. Species received and distributed in
the past have included A. belladonna belladonna, A. striata, A. evansiae, A. psittacina,
A. cybister, A. starkii, A. y ungacensis, A . forgetti, A. mollevillquensis, A. pardina, A.
elegans var. divifrancisci, A . viridiflora, A. umabisana, and pseudopardina.
If interested in these or other species, please submit your name and address for the
file of persons to be notified on the arrival of future shipments.
LOUISIANA NATIVE IRISES
These beautiful native plants may be grown in upland gardens in most parts of the
United States, with the exception of the northern tier, provided they are well fertilized,
heavily mulched and watered frequently during periods of prolonged drought. The
rhizomes may be moved successfully at any time during late summer and fall, but the
best period is during the months of August, September and October. Since these plants
are natives of bogs and swamps, growing naturally in water, they may also be used
effectively around the borders of shallow streams and pools. The graceful flowers are
very effective in making arrangements or they may be used in a corsage.
The group of plants which are collectively classed as "Louisiana Irises" is composed
of three principal species and their hybrids. The species are I . fulva, the red or flame
colored iris of the Lower Mississippi Valley; I. giganticaerulea, the tall blue of the
7
Lower Gulf Coast; and I. foliosa, the little blue to lavender dwarf of the bluff or terrace lands. Iris virginica is also native to Louisiana, but it grows in other regions outside the state and it does not hybridize with the other species. It is largely found
growing in the poorer pine flatlands.
In some regions leaf miners injure the foliage by feeding in the tissue at the base
of the leaves. These may be controlled by an early spring application of one of the
systemic insecticides as Di-Syston, Systox or Cygon.
Shipping period for Louisiana irises: Mid August through October.

VIRGINICA GROUP
All iris varieties of the Virginica Group are v ery vigorous, free of disease and easy
to grow. They will grow on poorer soil and will withstand more cold and more drought
than the species and hybrids, which taken collectively, are called "Louisiana Irises."
Even this group of irises, however, will respond to good soil and water as needed.

BEARDED IRISES FOR THE DEEP SOUTH
Many of the modern varieties of bearded irises have been found to be unsuited to
the Lower Gulf Coast Region, largely because climatic conditions are favorable to the
development of soft rot of the rhizomes, which is a bacterial disease.
For more than ten years breeding work has been underway at this nursery in an
effort to find or produce strains of bearded irises which have a natural resistance to the
disease. Varieties and seedlings which showed a high degree of susceptibility were eliminated. Rhizomes are now available from strains which flowered in the spring of 1965
and 1966 after having survived the summers of 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965. Sold only in
unlabeled mixed colors including white, yellow, blue and purple. Per dozen rhizomes.
$3.00
JAPANESE IRIS
These fibrous rooted irises will do well on the fairly heavy soils of the South provided they are given a fertile soil, high in organic matter and watered frequently before
and during the blooming period. In the area of Baton Rouge, La., they bloom in May
and early .June. They need an acid soil, free of lime. They are w ell suited to planting
along the banks of ponds and streams, but will g row in high ground.
If thrips attack the blooms they can b e controlled by s praying the plants with
water soluble DDT.
Seedlings of irises in mixed colors of the famous Higo Strain, produced from varieties
grown by Dr. Shuichi Hirao, a prominent breeder in .Japan. Each . . .. . ........... $1.00

SPURIA IRISES
Spuria Inses are becoming increasingly popular in the Deep South and in the
Southwest. They are of easy culture and an established clump may remain undistrubed
for years. The flowers somewhat resemble those of the bulbous Dutch irises. These
plants respond to good soil and they need good drainage, but they will grow and flourish on a minimum of water. Flowers bloom about the same time as the Louisianas and
the Siberians.

DAYLILIES
Diseases are of negligible importance, but in recent years there have been instances
of foliage damage by red spiders and both the foliage and the flower buds are frequently
injured by aphids (plant lice). Both of these pests may be controlled by a weekly spray
program, beginning in late winter. Malathion is effective when used at the rate of one
tablespoon to a gallon of water and applied directly on the insects. At this nursery
it has been found that one early spraying with the systemic material "Systox" or "Cygan" gives almost complete control of the aphid Myzus heme1·ocallis, but they are toxic
to humans and the careless use by inexperienced operators is not recommended.
In the late winter complete control of aphids has been effected by one treatment
with the granular systemic, "Di-Syston," using 4 ounces of 10 % active material to 100
feet of row. The material is shaken over the daylily plants, using a glass jar with small
nail holes punched in the top. This insecticide is taken up by the plants through both
the foliage and the roots.

CRINUMS
Crinums are large and showy, lily-like plants for the Lower South. They are appealing and intriguing hallmarks of old southern gardens, which have come into a new
surge of popularity in recent years all over Southern United States and into California.
The Powelli varieties and Crinum bulbispermum are half hardy and may be grown
with winter protection as far north as the Ohio River Valley.
The culture of these beautiful plants is easy. They may be moved at any time, but
fall planting is highly recommended. If given a fertile soil, high in organic matter and
watered frequently during the summer they will reward the gardener with a profusion
of fragrant blooms. They will survive (but not thrive) and furnish some bloom during
periods of neglect.

CHALICE LILIES
This includes a large number of amaryllid genera in which the lower parts of the
stamens are usually modified to form a tube or stamina! cup, which in many cases resembles a chalice- hence the name Chalice Lilies. In a few cases the lower parts of the
stamens are not united, but are otherwise modified.
There are two subgroups. In one, subgenus Hymenocallis, the free parts of the
stamens are upright. In the other, subgenus Ismene, the stamens are incurved.
The scape of Hymenocallis is an umbel of 6 to 12 fragrant white flowers with membranous bracts. A number of species are native in the Lower Mississippi Valley and
other parts of the Gulf Coast Region. They are not hardy in the colder regions and
should only be attempted in the greenhouse.

GLORIOSA
(The Climbing Lily)
These gloriously beautiful, exotic plants attract more attention and more discussion
from visitors than any other plant at this nursery. They come from East Africa, but
will grow well in any part of the country where gladiolas may be grown. The vines are
3' to 6' long, supporting themselves by tendrils on the ends of the leaves. There are
numerous large, showy flowers of crimson and yellow with the entire flower changing
to light maroon after it is several days old. Excellent for arrangements or an individual
flower or may be used as a corsage.
Plant in sun or light shade, but the soil should be loose and friable. Heavy soils
should be lightened up by the addition of sand and peat or compost. Planting is done
when the weather begins to warm up in the spring. Tubers delivered in March.

the best of the 'Ginger or Hidden Lilies.' It is a relatively recent import from India 1:! • •
