3. Pedigree Sheets and Family Group sheets:
Through the research I have found evidence of 4 John Dillons. For the purposes of
clarity I will number them 1 -4 with the most recent as 4 (my grandfather) and the
furthest as 1 (my great-great-great grandfather).

www.findmypast.ie, www.rootsirealand.ie) the writer was able to obtain a death Certificate
entry from the General Register Office’s Death index books. John Dillon’s (#4) Death

John Dillon #4; Oral History:
Location of Annaghbride house “Biddy’s garden” as described in the 1901 Census:
A detailed description of the movements of the family and other biographical information
from 1925 to his death in 1972 was received. The following is a chronology of the
movements of John Dillon (#4) subsequent to the census of 1911 at Annaghbride where he
was born in 1908.
1925 to 1935:
New 2 story slated house built for his parents John Dillon (#3) and Delia Codum (photograph
exists).
Oral information received suggest their parents never settled in the new house and missed
the company of their close friends and neighbours in their old house at Annaghbride (1 of 4
Cottier houses built to house workers on the adjacent large estate).
Delia’s sister married Patrick Molloy who inhabited one of the four cottier houses also. This
house was described as sociable, fun, filled with music and that Delia’s sister was “elegant”.
The 4 houses were known as “Biddys Garden”. Previously the land was occupied by the
Tully family and the Immediate Lessor as The Marquis of Clanricard. Following the Land
Acts 1890 to 1910 the land was transferred into the ownership of the occupiers.

1937: Moved to London (passport photo exists)
1940: Married Ann Harte in London during WW2
He worked in an ammunitions factory and as a Labourer. He moves residence frequently to
avoid conscription. John Dillon #4 lived with an Irish friend. He meets Ann Harte from
County Mayo at a dance. On their first date he arrives in a suit much too short due to his
friend borrowing his and getting it dirty. Ann Hart nearly turns away when she sees him
coming down to the street towards the cinema in the suit.
1941:
They decide to leave London because of the Blitz (2 of their friends had their heads blown
off when they looked out the window) and also because they were expecting their first child.
Maura Dillon is born in Mayo.

4. Family; John Dillon and Delia Codum:
John Dillon #3 (born 1879) and Delia/Brigid Codum (born 1880):
Censuses 1901 and 1911, Annaghbride and Streamstown; John Dillon (#3) and (#4):
Orally transmitted information and recollections are a good starting point but they are not
conclusive proof of pedigree. Therefore the 1901 and 1911 Censuses were this writers
starting point.
The 1901 and 1911 censuses are special in that the original manuscripts returns survive, filled
out and signed by the head of each household. The censuses contain household information
such as name, age, sex, relationship to head of household, religion, occupation, marital status,
county or county of birth, an individual’s ability to read and write, speak the Irish language,
and whether deaf, dumb, blind, idiot, imbecile or lunatic.
The 1911 added an additional important question: the number of years of marriage, the
number of their children born alive and the number still living.
The second form, B1 is the House and Building Return: this gives details of the type of
building. The 3rd form, B2 tells you what extra buildings are attached to a dwelling.
John Dillon #3 Census Annaghbride 1911:
Because the place of residence was known John Christopher Dillon (#4) and John Francis
Dillon (#3) were located in the 1911 census at Annaghbride, house number 10.
It shows John Dillon (#3) aged 34, head of household married to Delia Dillon age 33 with 3
children Patrick Joe, John C Dillon (#4) aged 3 and Mary Ellen aged 7 months.
John Dillon (#3) was an Agricultural Labourer who along with Delia could read and write.
All the family were born in Galway and the religion recorded as Catholic.
It was signed by John Dillon indicating literacy and the Enumerator was Constable Michael
Foley RIC.

Signature of John Dillon #3 on Census 1911 Annaghbride:
In addition to genealogical information the census provides interesting background
information. The house was made of stone, had 2 rooms, 2 windows to the front, an outhouse
for fowl and was classified as 3rd class.
The children were not recorded as scholars indicating that Patrick was not yet attending
school.
Their Immediate Lessor was most likely Thomas Tully. The number of years married was 6
years indicating a marriage year of circa 1905.

John Dillon #3 1901 census:
The 1901 census located John Dillon (#3) aged 24 at house 1 Streamstown, a townland 3km
from Annaghbride employed as a Farm Servant.
I am confident this is my great-grandfather because he is, a) the correct age, b) the correct
profession, c) in the correct County, and because of the close proximity to his place of
marriage (Shangarry), his future wife’s workplace (Duniry), her parents homestead
(Carrowcreevanagh) and his future homestead at Annaghbride.

A search of all John Dillon’s in county Galway in the Census of 1901 confirmed no others
matched the criteria.
The head of the household was Michael Fahy, a married farmer recorded as an Idiot in the
specified illness column. Apart from Michael Fahy and his wife there was one other Farm
Servant and one female General Servant.
John Dillon aged 24, able to could read and write, was unmarried and was born in County
Galway.
The house and farm was substantial containing 5 rooms, 12 windows to the front and 19 outhouses including 3 stables, a coach house and a harness room.
Delia Codum Census1901 Duniry:
Delia Codum is located in the 1901 census at the townland of Duniry 6km from Streamstown
(www.google.ie/maps).
She was employed as a General Servant at the O’Brien farm and shop.
She is aged 20, not married, could read and write and spoke Irish and English.
Marriage of John Dillon (#3) and Delia Codum:
The General Register Office in Dublin contains copy registrations for Civil Births, Deaths
and Marriages (1845 to 1921 for Catholic registrations).
Knowing the marriage year was 1905, their marriage certificate was obtained (General
Register Office) dated February 1905 and registered in March 1905.
Their residence at the time of Marriage was Shangarry near Annaghbride. This is a different
residence to the 1901census.
Her first name is recorded as Brigid but as Delia on the Census. Information received from
my Aunt confirmed that it was common for the names Bridget and Delia to refer to the same
person.
The marriage took place in St Laurence’s Chapel, Tynagh. It shows John Dillon (#3) was 27
and employed as a farm Servant.
His father’s name was John Dillon (#2), a farmer.
Bridget Codum was 25 years of age, a spinster and also a Servant.
Her father was Patrick Codium (an obvious misspelling) also a farmer. Witnesses were
Patrick Kelly and Mary Forde.

John Dillon #3 Birth Certificate 1879 (search):
The birth registration (and place of birth) of John Dillon (#3) was more difficult to establish
because he moved from his birthplace to work as a farm labourer.
What is known is his estimated date of birth of between 1877 – 1880 (per Census and
Marriage Cert.) and his father’s name was John Dillon (#2) (per marriage cert).
Also known was John Dillon’s profession (#2) was farmer (per marriage cert.) and that John
Dillon (#3) was born in County Galway (per Census).
A search online (Irish Family History Foundation’s website; Roots Ireland) provided only
one Baptism and only one Civil Birth Registration record for a son named John Dillon with
father named John Dillon in County Galway between 1872 and 1886.
Parents of John Dillon #3:
Both records related to the same birth i.e. John Dillon (#3) born to John Dillon (#2) and
Winifred Curl(e)y.
The location for both is between the towns of Calta and Castleblakeney in the Registration
District of Mountbellew.
Overview Map of Caltra and surrounding townlands:
Caltra Church 1837 refurbished 1939:
With the registration district given as Mountbellow, I was able to search the indexes online
on familysearch.org and use the details given to obtain a copy Civil Birth Registration
(General Register Office).
John Dillon #3 Birth Certificate 1879 (details):
The Civil Birth Registration of John Francis Dillon (#3) provided the place and date of birth
as Castleblakeney on August 19th 1879. The birth was registered on December 11th 1879.
His father’s profession is given as farmer. The witness was Mary Higgins (who could not
sign her name) and unusually his middle name was stated as Francis.
The church baptism for John Joseph Dillon (#3) is recorded at the Parish of Caltra on August
24th 1879 with his birth date as August 19th 1879. The baptism was dated August 25th 1879.
Witnesses were Martin Dillon and Elizabeth Killelea. It is unclear why his middle name is
different. Also it is unclear if there is a connection between Catherine Higgins (married to
Patrick Codum) and Mary Higgins witness to John Dillon #3 birth.
John Dillon #3 Birth Certificate 1879 (image):
For confirmation I have searched the 1901 and 1911 Censuses for other possible parents of
John Dillon (#3) and found none matching the correct criteria. Also a search of pre-1901
Census fragments was carried out and no Dillon entries from Galway were found.
Registration documents such as Births, Deaths, Marriages and Census returns all constitute
good Primary sources. I have not yet found a Primary source for a relationship between John
Dillon (#3) and John Dillon (#2) but have confidence the research to date gives reasonable
assurance of a genealogical connection. Absence of evidence does not constitute evidence of
absence. Therefore continued research to increase the probability of a relationship is
necessary.
Codum Bridget Birth Cert 1880:
The civil birth registration Bridget Codam was registered on the 4th of February 1880. The
birthdate was January 10th 1880.
Her parents were Patrick and Catherine Codam (formerly Higgins) of Bracklagh.

John Dillon #2 and #3, Caltra Co. Galway (35km north of annaghbride):
Censuses 1901 and 1911, Caltra; John Dillon (#2)
A search of the census of 1901 and 1911 (www.census.nationalarchives.ie) for Winifred and
John Dillon (#2), located them in house 22, Caltra townland, Parish of Killosolan, Poor Law
Union of Mountbellew in East Galway. This townland is approximately 35 km North of
Annaughbride and Streamstown.
The census of 1901 shows John Dillon (#2), farmer, aged 50 as Head of house with
Winifred Dillon aged 42, his wife.
It shows 2 children, a son Patrick aged 22 and a daughter Kate aged 24.
All inhabitants could read and write. John Dillon (#2) could speak Irish and English.
The census was signed by John Dillon (#2) indicating literacy. The house had 2 rooms and 4
windows to the front and class of house was recorded as second.
The Immediate Lessor was John Joyce and the enumerator was Constable Patrick McCann.
House 22 (and 23), are located between a Public house and a RC church.
John Dillon #2 Census 1901 Caltra:

Dillon John #2 Caltra Census 1901 house details and landlord:
The 1911 census locates the household at the same address. House 22 is located between a
Public house and house #21 which is beside a RC Chapel and house 20 ( also a Public house).
The biggest change is the number of surviving children. It records 2 surviving but the number
of children born to John and Winifred was 3 indicating that their daughter Katie Dillon died
between 1901 and 1911.The cause is currently unknown.
Also John Dillon (#2) is aged 62 and Winifred is aged 58. The differences in age between the
census of 1901 and 1911 reflected an uncertainty concerning age during these times not one
of dishonesty.

Dillon John #2 Marriage Registration 1876; Caltra:
The Census of 1911 for John Dillon (#2) stated the number of years married as 35 giving an
expected marriage year as 1876. Therefore their marriage details were obtained from the
online marriage indexes (www.familysearch.org). A copy Marriage Certificate was obtained
(General Register Office). The marriage took place on January 10th 1876.
It shows the marriage was solemnized at the Roman Catholic Chapel of Caltra in the

8. Family; John Dillon #1(born 1820’s or 1830’s) and Unknown
wife:
Griffith’s Valuation 1855:
Griffith’s Valuation is the name given to the property tax survey carried out between
1847 and 1864 and supervised by Sir Richard Griffiths, a geologist, engineer and
surveyor.
On average 70% of heads of families were included in the survey. All agricultural and built
property on the island with a valuation over £5 was surveyed and valued.
There are 16 John Dillon’s listed in Griffith’s Valuation of County Galway dated in the
1850’s of whom only one was resident in Caltra, parich of Killosolan .
The year is 1855.
Map reference 5 (should read 6 as no 6 is listed), lists plots (a to i) of 29 acres, 2 roods and 36
perches.
John Dillon #1 is listed as plot 6 d with a rateable valuation of £2 /10 shillings.
His property is described as a House, Office (outhouse) and Land.
Based on this value his land size is estimated at over 4 acres.
His Immediate lessor is Mary Joyce (John Joyce was John Dillon (#2) Immediate lessor in
the census of 1901.
A likely relative Tomas Dillon is listed at plot 6 c.
Patrick Curley, father of Winifred Curley (wife to John Dillon (#2)) is listed on the same
page at map reference number 28 and 29.

The Tithe Applotment Books;Caltrapallas 1834:
The Tithe Applotment Books were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to
determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings over one acre should
pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland.
In 1834 an unknown Dillon appears in the Tithe Applotment book at Caltrapallas.
The location of the Caltrapallas is the next townland south of the Caltra town.
Given it’s close proximity to the town, the size of the holdings and that there are no other
Dillon families in the town in the Griffith Valuation of 1855 there is a high probability the
land relates to John Dillon (#1).
“Dillon” Tithe Applotment Book Caltrapallas 1834:
As we can see from the book the total area of land occupied by this unknown Dillon was
circa 5 acres. 1834 is currently the furthest known evidence of a Dillon ancestor.
