MISSION AND VISION
Trusting in Providence, and building upon the faith-centered heritage of our founding members, we are
committed to serving needs and to fostering talents of people in the Cowichan Valley, especially of those
not easily accepted elsewhere, through our therapeutic community at Providence Farm. Our focus shall
be upon the renewal of body and spirit, and upon people caring for the soil, and the soil nurturing the
people.
“Providence Farm is an important contributor to the lives of people with disabilities who live in the
Cowichan Valley.”

HISTORY
In 1864, the 400 acres on which Providence Farm sits today was purchased by the Sisters of St.
Ann. For the next 100 years, the Sisters operated a school on the site. In 1921, the iconic
Providence House was built and classes continued until June 22, 1964, when the school’s bell
rang for the last time.
In the late 1970s, a group of people with varied backgrounds and interests got together to discuss
building community at the old St. Ann’s school site and farm in Duncan. By July 12, 1979,
agreement had been reached to establish a registered charity named the Vancouver Island
Providence Community Association (VIPCA), named in memory of Sister Mary Providence, the
founder of the school and programs in Duncan in the 1800s. In 2009, the Sisters of St. Ann
generously gifted VIPCA the property.
The goal of VIPCA was, and remains today, to serve the needs and foster the talents of people in
the Cowichan Valley, especially of those not easily accepted elsewhere. In the pages to come,
you will learn of our many therapeutic programs and of the people that breathe life in to
Providence Farm today.
Welcome to Providence Farm.

FROM THE CHAIR
O n b e h a l f o f t h e Va n c o u v e r I s l a n d
Providence Community Association (VIPCA)
Board I would like to thank the many people
and organizations which make up our
therapeutic community. Without them we
could not be anywhere near as successful
as we are. Thank you to our staff, board and
volunteers for their tremendous commitment
to fulfilling our mission in the 2014/15 year.
A special thanks need to go out to the Sisters
of St Ann for their incredible generosity to this
community in providing not only the original
lease and then subsequent gifting of the land
to allow this farm to be here in the first place,
but in providing ongoing support, sponsoring
our programming and, most recently,
providing the Farm with an educational and
training endowment which will enable more training opportunities for the Farm.
We also want to thank our healthcare partners Community Living BC and Island Health for their
continuing support of our programs and the compassionate partnerships we have developed over the
years.
Providence Farm has the benefit of many wonderful partnerships including:
•
Vancouver Island University’s Culinary Arts training program who run the gourmet restaurant The
Farm Table here at Providence House and promote local farm to table production.
•
The Cowichan Folk Guild who produce the Island Folk Fest on the Farm and who have been doing so
for many successful decades.
•
The Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association who help disadvantaged children improve their health
through the bonding of horse and rider. They have also just opened a wonderful outdoor riding ring.
•
For many years we have had the benefit of working with the Cowichan Valley Alternative School
whose students study on the farm and who contribute to our mission through helping on our
construction projects. For decades they have built and worked on so many structures around the farm
that we can’t count them all. Most recently they helped put in the accessibility walkway to our stage
and built the mobile chicken coop.
•
In our ongoing desire to support those who find difficulty in the mainstream we have signed a
Memorandum of Agreement with Providence Village Housing Society and are working on a lease for
acreage to build Providence Village - a non profit, affordable housing community.
Our slogan for the coming year is So Much To Give and while many seeds have been sown there is much
work to do. As a Board of local community members we are excited about the future of Providence Farm
and look forward to working with the community to continue the Farm’s evolution into a world class
example of community compassion in action.

THE PROVIDENCE
COMMUNITY
Community is a word that reminds us of
togetherness, care and compassion for our
neighbours. As a therapeutic community,
Providence Farm is home to more than 80
people from the greater Cowichan Valley
community who come here every week as
participants in our day programs. Some
come out every day, others once or twice a
week; but for all of them this is a sanctuary, a place of learning, a place of extended family, a place to
have help in building a meaningful week and hopefully, a meaningful life.
For our participants who suffer from head injuries, mental health or developmental disabilities their time
on the farm is their work. We have a wide variety of activities on the farm from gardening and
landscaping, seeding and planting, harvesting, and packaging to working in the kitchen preparing lunch
for the volunteers, participants and staff. Participants also make products in our textile program and
woodworking shop and they care for our animals. We have lots of projects and everyone works to their
capacity and is respected for whatever contributions they can make or for just being here.
We also have art, music, yoga, computers, walks, and birthday celebrations. We like cake.
I have recently taken over as the Executive Director and I find I am awestruck sometimes by the deep
commitment so many people have for the Farm. We have VIPCA founders who have retired, but are still
coming out every week and volunteering. This includes Sister Frieda from the Sisters of St. Ann who
continues to come out to help with the archives. The Sisters of course have profoundly contributed to the
Farm and continue to support our programming to this day. We also have community volunteers who
likewise have been here for decades, adding their lives to the mix. We are also supported by community
partners like the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association, Vancouver Island University, the Cowichan
Valley Alternate School and the Cowichan Folk Guild. It’s this incredible “community” spirit which is so
inspiring. Providence Farm is a jewel in this valley. As Star Weiss says in her book Havens In A Hectic
World, Providence Farm “is one of those spots on the Earth where the word
“inclusive” could have been coined.” I feel it, I see it and I hear it everyday. I
call it a place of smiles.
I am overjoyed to be a part of this community and will work hard with all of you
to help this community move forward into more exciting ventures which will
enable us to help more people as our mission dictates and become a world
class example of how people of many different abilities can come together and
create something of tremendous beauty and humanity.

BENEFITS OF OUR WORK
Like the tangible results of a thriving garden, the success of Providence Farm is obvious. Friendships,
skills development, improved health, nutrition and a sense of well-being are made possible at the Farm.
An improved quality of life, the freedom to be and make mistakes, and an accepting and respectful
community make the Farm a place that is life-giving.
Some of the results of our work in 2014-15 include:
•
Over 180 participant spaces in various therapeutic and vocational training programs were provided at
the Farm each week.
Page 7

•
Over 12,000 healthy and nutritious lunches were served to participants, staff and volunteers from the
Farm’s Kitchen Program.
•
Over 100 volunteers contributed to the on-going success and vibrant culture of the Farm and the
Farm was pleased to honour and celebrate them with an appreciation breakfast on May 9th.
•
Dozens of Community Support Worker, Licensed Practical Nurse and Nursing Practicum Students
and Horticultural Therapy Interns spent time working in and learning about the Farm’s program areas.
•
47 local gardeners grew their crops at the Farm, in 102 allotment gardens.
•
The Farm’s annual Pumpkin Hay Rides brought hundreds of school children to the Farm for hay
wagon rides and the pumpkin harvest.
•
The Farm partnered with and provided learning opportunities to Canada World Youth and students
from Little Flower Academy.
•
Using funds raised through a previous year’s James Barber Memorial Dinner, the Farm replaced the
commercial mixer in its Kitchen Program.
•
Working with Leadership Vancouver Island (LVI) the Farm celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the
Sisters of St. Ann settling the Farm property. Celebrations included an afternoon tea during which 14
historical signs were unveiled. These historical signs are erected around the Farm property for
visitors to enjoy.
•
Numerous aging buildings on the Farm got a face-lift with a new coat of paint, as well, significant
upgrades were made to the hay barn and the Farm’s sewage system.
•
The Farm’s Main Stage received a significant upgrade with a grant received from Enabling
Accessibility for $13,000. The grant helped the Farm to rebuild Stage Left of the Main Stage, adding
a sidewalk to the stage and a wheelchair accessible ramp.
•
Several fundraising events were held during the year: St. Ann’s Plant Sale (April), Farm Dance Under
the Stars (June), Annual Giving Campaign (November and December), Christmas Craft Fair
(December) and Beer ‘n Burger Night (February). With the proceeds of the 2014 Farm Dance Under
the Stars the Farm purchased a half-ton truck.
•
As part of its administrative due diligence strategy, the Farm went to the market place with a Banking
Services Request for Proposals and selected Coastal Community Credit Union as its financial
institution.

“I want to tell you that every time I present an education session at Providence, I come away with a
renewed sense of why I do what I do, and feel enthusiastic and recharged. I totally believe that is from
all of the healing energy that is abundant on the Farm.”

“The Rotary Club of Duncan has, over the years, recognized the significant contribution made by
Providence Farm to the lives of its program participants, to dozens of volunteers who also work there,
and to the greater Cowichan Valley community. Providence plays a huge roles in the overall health of
this area. Our Club is proud to have made a contribution and to support the work and mission of the

“One of the marvellous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a
way we couldn’t as individuals. When we pool our strength and share the work and responsibility, we
can welcome many people, even those in deep distress, and perhaps help them find self-confidence
and inner healing.”
Jean Vanier
“There are a few things I would like to say about the Farm and my experiences working within the
community. I really enjoyed working alongside everyone...it was almost like the show, ‘Cheers’, where
everybody knows your name. If help was needed, people from other parts of the Farm were always
willing to help. The biggest thing that made me feel like I belonged happened at a group meeting and
everyone from program participants to employees participated. It was a chance for people to voice
their opinion on how they can make Providence a better place for everyone. The people there are
great...they made me feel like I could come back anytime and visit. The support that was given is
most appreciated and I know continued support is still being given. I know I can return anytime, and I
feel that the Providence Community would be happy to help...and that’s the best feeling of all.”

THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMS
Providence Farm is a therapeu3c farm nestled at the base of Mount Tzouhalem in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, Bri3sh Columbia. In 2014, the Vancouver Island Providence Community Associa3on celebrated 35 years of providing crea3ve and innova3ve programs for adults and seniors in the Valley with mental health and substance use issues, brain injuries and developmental challenges. •
The Greenways Self Help Program follows a psycho social rehabilita3on model providing approximately 45 people each week with an assortment of set programming and seasonal ac3vi3es. Programming selec3on is specified to meet the needs, goals and desires of each of these individuals, allowing for personal growth and building of community. •
Hor3cultural therapy and training are offered in greenhouses, raised beds, the nursery and market garden. •
Employability skills and voca3onal training are emphasized in the Furniture Shoppe, Farm Fashions, and Farm Fix-‐It Shop, while culinary skills and healthy ea3ng are taught in the kitchen. Page 11

Providence Farm Annual Report 2014/15
•
Ar3s3c skills like sculp3ng, pain3ng, kniTng, weaving and spinning are nurtured in the Farm’s Art Studio and Loom Room. •
The Segues program brings together 10 men with different developmental challenges who work throughout the Farm, tending the animals, caring for the grounds and offering a welcoming presence for people coming up the driveway (of which there are over 800 a week!) •
St Ann’s Garden Club offers a safe and home-‐like environment to seniors and gives par3cipants an opportunity to grow gardens in raised beds, prepare meals, talk, laugh, and work at projects together. All programs inten3onally overlap, consistent with the idea that we are taking care of the Farm together. Friendships, skill development, improved health and a sense of well-‐being are made possible by the dedicated staff and volunteers of the Farm. The freedom to be and to make mistakes, and an accep3ng and respec\ul community make the Farm a place that is life-‐giving. “Providence Farm, keep up the great work. You are all such an important part of this community! And
all your smiles make me smile.”
@ILoveCowichan
“In the Providence Seniors’ Program, participants are welcomed into an accepting and respectful
environment.
They enjoy and benefit from socializing and working on projects together, and with
volunteers and other community members. We were able to bring a number of our seniors to
Providence Farm to participate in workshops in St. Ann’s greenhouse. This was very much enjoyed
and appreciated by these seniors. “

VOLUNTEERS
We depend on our 100s of volunteers to help make this Farm work. These wonderful compassionate
people dedicate thousands of hours a year to working alongside our participants in weaving, cooking,
woodworking, construction, repairs, painting, animal care, and all aspects of gardening. And so much
more. Volunteers embody community and we thank them for their heartfelt contribution to helping make
Providence Farm what it is.
