Kindergarten Math Students explore Math by learning about fractions, money, shapes, time, and simple addition and subtraction. Language Arts This phonics-based approach uses colorful, read-aloud phonics storybooks and poetry to introduce and reinforce short vowel and consonant sounds, sequencing, auditory and visual discrimination, classifying, and rhyming. Math Options Singapore Math Method – Students build a strong foundation in math skills and concepts. They study two- and three-digit numbers, addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, skip counting, measurements, telling time, and graphs. Calvert Math – Students work with two- and three-digit numbers, skip counting, measurements, addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers without regrouping, telling time, and graphs. Social Studies Students are inspired by biographies of famous explorers, political figures, inventors, and American leaders. They explore the five themes of geography and learn basic map skills. Language Arts Through activities that develop phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills, students build on printing skills and begin to use the distinctive Calvert script. The formal spelling program overlaps with phonics instruction in reading. Students learn to compose sentences on a given topic, lines of poetry, and thank-you notes. Science An exploration of living things, Earth, weather, matter, motion, and energy excites the imagination. Technology Computer studies include word processing, computer navigation, graphics skills, and visual mapping basics. Students perform complex addition and subtraction and are introduced to multiplication and division. They work with numbers up to a thousand, manipulate and measure geometric figures, develop skills with money and measurement, and represent data. They explore how these tales reflect the culture of origin. Students then write their own fairy tale. Math Options Singapore Math Method – Students use problem-solving and visual representations to perform addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, develop skills in fractions, multiply, divide with and without regrouping, work with metric and customary measurements, and calculate area and perimeter of twodimensional shapes. Calvert Math – Students are challenged by multiplication and division, estimation, improper fractions and mixed numbers, decimals, geometric figures, and simple equations. Science Life cycles, ecosystems, matter, force, motion, and astronomy, health, and mineralogy are studied. Social Studies Students begin a more formal study of social studies, focusing on communities. Language Arts Composition lessons help students further develop writing and reinforce spelling skills. Students are introduced to ancient mythology to foster literature appreciation. Smiling Hill Farm, a classic, but rare, children’s book reprinted exclusively for Calvert, is the first novel students read on their own. It is supplemented by story anthologies. Students are introduced to a more structured interactive, web-based spelling program. Geography Students learn to identify hemispheres, continents, and oceans. They gain an understanding of longitude, latitude, and symbols on maps and graphs. Technology Spreadsheets, graphing, and presentation skills are employed throughout subjects. Calvert Math – Skills in mathematical processes, logical reasoning, and problem solving are taught as students explore addition and subtraction of decimals and fractions, functions, statistics, data analysis, and probability. Science Students study life science, physical science, and earth science. Students will also add and subtract using scientific notation, use exponential notation, graph linear equations, analyze data, and apply geometric transformations.
