Green Living is the theme of the 17th Annual Fall Delaware Home Show October 17-18 at the Chase Center on
the Riverfront in Wilmington. Presented by the Home
Builders Association of Delaware, the show is sponsored by
Stover Builders.
The show will feature green products, services, styles
and ideas. More than 50,000 square feet of exhibits will
highlight new products, time- and money-saving services,
the hottest styles in home fashions, and fabulous ideas for
new-home construction, remodeling and decorating.
Ready to buy a new home? Learn about the latest building products, see what’s new and exciting in building materials, mortgages and inspections, and talk to builders.
Already in your home? Find out about cabinetry and storage systems, heating and air conditioning systems, cleaning
systems, flooring, weatherproofing, decorating, security,
kitchens, baths, sunrooms and much more.
The Delaware Home Show promises the most comprehensive lineup of seminars featuring green and energy efficiency from the area’s top green experts, with topics like,
“How Do You Know You Are Buying Green? Don’t Get
Green Washed!”, hosted by JCM Environmental; “Delaware, A Leader in a Clean Energy Economy” hosted by Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental
Control and workshops on “Energy Basics” and “Reducing
Energy Waste” hosted by the University of Delaware, plus
much more. The Education lineup is presented by Energy
Services Group—saving billions of BTU’s since 1981.
The Better Business Bureau and Delmarva Power are offering free admission to the first 300
people who bring a bundle of papers to be destroyed at the Shred Event on Saturday. Simply sort
through your important papers, then bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to be shredded. Take home the tips and resources you need to help protect your identity. The Shred Event is
limited to the first 300 people who enter the show on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Kids may join the Green Living theme by participating in the Green Building Block Competition hosted by the National Association of Women in Construction. Children may register to
compete in a competition (Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon and 2 p.m.) to build
a green structure out of building blocks and other miscellaneous things. Prizes will be awarded
for each competition.
Sponsors include Delaware Today magazine, Energy Services Group and the Wilmington
Trust Company. Partial show proceeds benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware. The
Delaware Home Show runs Saturday, October 17 from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. and Sunday, October

Winter is just around the corner. Take the
necessary steps now to ensure your home and
lawn can hold up to another cold, wet season.
Lawn and Landscape
Reseed and fertilize Fall is a great time for new
grass seed to take root, so consider reseeding selected areas of your lawn. Reseeding also helps keep
weeds from growing in the spring. Fertilize with a
high-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage root growth.
Look for a lawn fertilizer labeled “winterizing.”
Aerate your lawn Over time your lawn can
become compacted, which hinders grass growth.
Aerating—breaking up the soil surface by poking holes into the ground—reduces thatch,
loosens compacted soils, and paves the way for
water and nutrients to reach the roots of your
grass. There are many tools you can use to aerate
your lawn, including self-propelled units, lawn
mower attachments, and hand- or foot-powered
plugging tools that can be rented or bought at
your hardware or home supply store.
Trim your trees and remove dead branches
High winds or heavy snows can cause weak trees
or branches to break and cause damage to property and person. Look for large dead branches

Add Green to Your
Home—and Your
Pocketbook—by
Remodeling
It’s nearly impossible these days to open
the newspaper and not see a story about the
rapid growth of green building, where new
homes are built with materials that conserve
energy and environmental resources. A recent survey of home builders by the National
Association of Home Builders and McGraw
Hill Construction found that by 2010 one of
every 10 homes built will be “green.”
Owners of green homes said in another
survey that they were happier 85 percent of
the time with their new green home than
with their previous, more traditionally built
ones, due in part to the lower operating and
maintenance costs that come with energyand resource-efficient homes.
But for the 120 million existing homes in
the United States, remodeling is the only way
home owners can incorporate green. NAHB
Remodelers offers the following suggestions
to home owners who want to increase their
home’s efficiency, decrease costs and take advantage of the other benefits that green offers.

Install maximum insulation in
the area to be remodeled
Family Owned and Operated
Forty percent of the energy consumed in a
typical house goes to heating and cooling. Adding insulation is an easy way to increase efficiency. Insulation is rated by its ability to resist heat
flow, commonly known as R-value. The higher
the R-value, the better its ability to resist heat
flow. Adding insulation will help save energy
costs, increase comfort by better controlling
temperature, and improve indoor air quality
by eliminating many gaps through which dirt,
dust, and other impurities can enter.

Upgrade to an Energy Star-rated
or tankless water heater
Tankless water heaters provide hot water
on demand at a preset temperature rather
than storing it. Replacing an electric water
heater with a solar model can reduce costs
by up to 80 percent a year. Over its 20-year
lifespan, a solar heater will prevent more than
50 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. A lowcost option is to wrap insulation around your
heater, which can reduce standby heat losses
25 to 45 percent.
Purchase the highest efficiency
HVAC system you can afford
Over a 10-year period, the average home
owner spends more than $10,000 for heating
and cooling. Installing high efficiency Energy
Star HVAC equipment can reduce utility
costs on average by 10 percent to 30 percent
over minimum efficiency equipment. It also
can improve home comfort with more heating
and cooling and a quieter operation, and often features higher quality components that
result in longer equipment life.
