May 25, 2015 - Miles River Yacht Club
Boating Season Declared Open
by Marshall Patterson, Commodore
Enthusiasm is a Virtue
by Tim Hanlon, Vice Commodore
When most people hear Opening Day, they think of baseball. But
we Yacht Club members know that baseball comes second to the
true meaning of Opening Day - the opening of the summer
boating season!
It seems just a moment ago that the harbor, filled with ice and
brutal winds, made any thought of venturing out into the bay just
seem crazy. Now we need that ice to keep our coolers chilled and
our drinks refreshing. The summer boating season is here and we
can finally do what we love most - enjoy the water.
Our Opening Day is on May 9th starting at 2pm. The tradition of
an opening day is different around the country, but many clubs
celebrate with boat parades and reenactments while others have
formal ceremonies including dignitaries speaking. Across the Bay
we all share a very similar tradition and we like to keep our events
fun. Starting at 2pm, we will introduce visiting officers and the
officers of our Club. As the ceremony progresses, we will have
shore welcomes and a blessing of the fleet. To finish it off, we fire
a cannon to signify the opening of the season.
Just after the ceremony, we will have drinks and hors d'oeuvres to
appropriately toast the new season. Be sure to visit with all our
friends from clubs around the bay as well as mingle with other
members to plan the fun of the season. Many Kent Island
members will be visiting by boat specifically for our opening.
Chef Billy is putting together a great menu of items grilled outside
for us to enjoy. Finally being able to enjoy a grilled meal outside
again will be fun. We will have a corn hole tournament for those
interested. I know the Kent Island members visiting would enjoy
some competition. There will also be music in Isabel’s.
To finish out the evening, we will be having a kid’s movie on the
lawn. If you have kids or grandkids, be sure to stay around and
enjoy the evening.
It's time to declare the boating season open! Please come join us
for this important tradition of welcoming in the summer.
Enthusiasm is a virtue that brings out the positive
nature in most people. Spring is finally here and
most of us are scrambling to get things ready for
our warmer seasons.
Those that have boats are attending to their boats
to get them in the water by Opening Day, May 9th.
A couple years ago one of our members, Alan
Douglas, had his nautical flags on his boat with a
welcome message to COM Bill for his opening
day. I think this is a worthwhile objective to have
our nautical flags out to welcome in Opening Day
2015! The ceremony is a short one and if you have
not been to one before you should take some time
to see and be part of it. It’s your Club.
Over the past months I have been in some
meetings and had a chance to work with many
members who are doing an outstanding job to
contribute to the overall benefit of the Club. They
deserve a lot of credit and fortunately some new
members have stepped in to take on a role as I
suspect they are enjoying the Club more for
becoming more involved.
The Club use will pick up dramatically in the next
couple of weeks and give all of us a chance to
enjoy the Club, see the results of our general
management team in what they have done to
spruce up the inside and outside. Enjoy the menu
and the seasonal selections that Chef Billy is
actively presenting. The enthusiasm that the Club
management is offering is evident and is there for
you.
I look forward to hearing your comments and
seeing you at the Club.

Long Hauler Editor: Sharon Miller
Back from 1996-98, I lived in Germany for two years while I was in the
Army. I lived in Bavaria, to be more specific. I’ve always enjoyed learning
about other cultures and observing their customs. There in southern
Germany, it was customary to put up a May Pole once a year as a symbol
of Spring and the area’s traditions. In Bad Aibling, the little town I called
home, their May Pole had figures of pretty flowers, little men in lederhosen,
little ladies dressed as beer fraus, gasthauses, the Bavarian blue and white
check ribbon, a pretzel and a beer mass filled with beer, to name a few.
May is the month our Club really gets busy with the hustle bustle of boating,
racing, junior sail camp anticipation, Opening Day, Memorial Day, and the
Annapolis to Miles River (ATM) race. Most folks are excited to be out of the
house and enjoying the outdoors. What would our May Pole have on it if we
had that Bavarian custom? I could see it having the MRYC burgee, of
course. It might have a power boat, sailboat, officer flags, flowers, Isabel’s,
a swimming pool, Race Committee flag, American flag. It could have a little
man, woman and child and even a little dog. I think it would be fun to have a
May Pole one year. Our Club has many activities and members of many
demographics and it strives to have something that appeals to everyone.
This month is the big ATM race over the Memorial Day weekend. It’s a
great weekend to enjoy the Club and volunteer. It takes lots of hands to
make the weekend run smoothly. I hope to see you at the Club helping sell
tickets, driving one of the shuttle boats, working race committee or just
being there to guide guests to what they’re looking for. It’s a fun weekend!
I want to be available to you. Please do not hesitate to email me at
[email protected] or call at 301-613-9801.

HISF Is Ready to Race
by Glenn Higgins, Fleet Captain
by Gary Nylander, HISF Croaker
The Herring Island Sailing Fleet is getting ready to RACE!
But, first…. we had to get reorganized. As is tradition with
our group, we have a Head Herring (aka Commodore) who
usually serves two or three years to help with continuity.
This year we received a surprise when our first year Head
Herring informed us that he and wife and boat will be
moving to Boston, where he has accepted a new job. So
much for continuity as Brad and Katherine Campbell and
Terroir find new racing grounds.
We do have some backup, as we have six or seven past
Head Herring’s who are still active, so we had to get
together and develop a calendar for the year’s events and
decide who is going to run the show. There will be more on
that next month when all the prospects quit posturing. It
seems like the 2016 elections. But, we will have had a
meeting along with the Wednesday Night racers on April
22nd to iron out some details.
We invite all who may be interested in the fleet to join us for
a skipper and crew open house in the MRYC Trophy Room
on May 5 between 6 and 7. We have some skippers who
would like to have additional crew members and we have
some known crew who are looking for a boat - so please
attend for a few minutes and you may find a match.
Our racing year (for 2015) will feature two series of five
races for our cruising/racing type of boats and a Jib and
Main (only) series of five more for those who have fewer
crew or equipment or just don’t want to go through the extra
work of flying the big parachute.
The first series race will be on May 9. We are still deciding
on whether we will have our races earlier in the day or later,
as our “later” experiment didn’t seem to find greater wind
last year. The consensus as this is being written is that we
will start at 10:00. The first JAM will be on May 31 and those
will continue to be Pursuit style races (handicap taken at the
start) and start at 1:00.
Like we have in the past few years, our Long Distance Race
will be the Annapolis to St. Michaels race on May 23, and
you may see a bunch of Herrings at MRYC after the
festivities.

Projects I've always liked projects. I haven't always
enjoyed beginning a new project, but once I get into
it I'm generally happy.
Take writing an article for the LongHauler as an
example. The first sentence is the tough part. And,
truth be told, the first sentence generally gets
changed by the end of the article.
Currently, I am involved with several projects. The
first just wrapped up. The Club’s Class "g" Alcohol
license now allows for Sunday serving beginning at
10:30 am starting Sunday, June 14.
As Fleet Captain, I'm involved in an annual
"project.” On Memorial Day Saturday the Annapolis
to Miles River race comes to the Club. Anyone
wishing to volunteer some time would certainly be
appreciated. We are looking for anyone able to
assist in docking the visiting boats. The number of
boats makes it necessary for some visitors to "raft
out.” Shuttle skippers are also in demand to ferry
these crews onto the property and back. Please
consider coming out, as there is a lot of activity all
day and a really fun atmosphere.
Additionally, slip holders are being given an
opportunity to participate in an Oyster Recovery
program. We have made arrangements for "oyster
nurseries” to be made available for anyone
interested in participating. I’ve been assured that
there is minimal work, zero expense and lots of
satisfaction. Actually, I invite members who might
have a dock at their home to consider joining us in
this worthwhile effort.
My ongoing project is the "Osprey.” You may
remember that I bought a boat over the winter. Well,
progress is being made. The repower is completed.
The electronics are about to be installed and I'm
trying to fit a paint job into the budget. I visit Osprey
a few times a week Who am I kidding? Sometimes I
visit a few times a day.) I piddle about and make
minor repairs. I sit in the helm seat and look at the
chaos associated with the work in progress. In my
mind I lay out where each fishing rod will be placed.
I consider trips to Kent Narrows, Tilghman and
Annapolis. I anticipate a trip to the Severn River to
watch the Blue Angels. I find myself at peace. The
Wind In The Willows comes to mind." There is
nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing
as simply messing about in boats.”
I don't think I'm alone in that sentiment. The boats
are trickling into the marina, Isabel's is beginning to
show signs of life and outside activities in general
are happening.
I hope to see you for the Club Opening Day, May
9th. Let's have a great summer season. Let's be
safe and have lots of fun.

Kelly Distributors Helps Fund SOS
Program
Great MRYC Logowear for
Opening Day
The Miles River Yacht Club Foundation has added its
first Corporate Sponsor to the individuals and foundations
supporting the Foundation’s “SOS: Sink or Swim”
initiative. Kelly Distributors of Easton, a distributor of
Anheuser-Busch InBev and craft brewery products to
Talbot, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Dorchester and Kent
counties, will help underwrite the expense of teaching
children how to swim this summer at the Bay Hundred
Community Pool and Moton Pool in Talbot County.
The MRYC Foundation launched its five year program
last summer, turning 275 non-swimmers into swimmers.
It seeks to teach every Talbot County child to swim, and
is committing nearly $22,000 this year to teach 500
children. The Foundation and Kelly Distributors believe
that swimming is a basic life skill that every Chesapeake
Bay child should have, both for safety and as a prelude to
being a boater.
Founded in 2010, the MRYC Foundation has granted
$148,694 to 23 non-profit organizations that provide
children with maritime-oriented competitive sports or
educational activities in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Do your Club proud on Opening Day with new,
personalized MRYC logowear from members Charles
and Dot Low at Embroidered Images (410-745-6280).
They provide the Club with beautifully embroidered
MRYC logowear and can help you with personalization –
think name, boat name, custom items – from their many
catalogs, or you can purchase from the display case in
the lounge. They can embroider a whole lot more than
they display at the Club!
Ask in the office or at the bar, if you want to purchase an
item from the case or visit Dot and Charles in their shop
on Fremont Street (behind Acme). Every purchase you
make helps the Club whether you order it at the Club or
at their shop.

Advertisers
We will have the new MRYC Yearbook in May.
Please remember how important our local
advertisers are. Without our local advertisers,
MRYC would not be able to provide members with
the high-quality yearbook we now enjoy. Please,
when you are considering a purchase, make your
first choice one of our advertisers.
While we appreciate their support, remember that
they need our support to continue to bring you their
goods and services, as well.

you can have one
too.
The Auxiliary is making them available to you for $8.00 for a
single or $15.00 for two. They come with a magnetic back
but it can also be made with a pin back.
Please contact Karen Thomas at
[email protected] with your first and last name
and the year you became a member. Turnaround time is
about two weeks.
Don’t keep us in the dark! Club management and
your House Committee needs your feedback so we
know what is working well and what is not. We need
to know what our members want and expect of our
Club. If you have a problem while in the Club, tell
someone then, so the problem can be fixed when it
happens. There is always a Manager of the Day on
duty and usually an officer or House Committee
member in the Club.
So, tell us what you think about the menu, the food,
the service, the entertainment, the pool, the marina.
Please email comments to the House Committee at

We want to hear from you and we will respond.
