Words from the President
Hello NBN members and friends.
The leadership of the organization would like to thank the volunteers and all of
the fans that came out to this year’s Blues at the Beach festival. In my opinion,
this was one of the best festivals in recent memory. Fans were coming in from
all over the place. I recognized Blues Society members from both Chicago and
Pittsburgh, where I visited festivals earlier this year. Folks seem to like getting
away to the beach, and enjoying some great blues music. Brian Beachum worked
very hard to keep the flow of volunteers productive, and several volunteers
should receive gold medals for working extra shifts. Jeff Miller was busy at work
recording the acts by juggling three different video cameras. And let’s not forget
that Mark Johnson booked all of the great acts that began the festival’s success.
Big thanks go out to Rachel Screen printing, one of our corporate sponsors, and
especially Aaron Fulcher for the T-Shirt design. You guys were incredible. In
addition to providing us with great T-Shirts, which sold very well, the office staff
led by Martha Bond came out and volunteered.
Keep checking the website for updates on the upcoming events. The IBC
committee, along with the winning bands, is planning a fundraiser to help
offset the costs of the “Road to Memphis,” and as the year comes to a close, the
holiday party is being scheduled. This also includes the election of the Board of
Directors & Officers for the next year.
This brings me to the next subject, which would be the transition out of the
president’s position as my term expires. Over the last couple of years, I have
put a lot of time into the events, the organization, the members, and hopefully
smoothing out some rough edges that will help the NBN moving forward.
I’ve realized that people run the organization, and people are served by the
organization. My former boss and mentor told me once that “you can change
the way ‘you’ think, or you can TRY to change the way ‘they’ think”; but if you
want to make a difference, you need to get involved. Getting involved can be a
thankless job sometimes, but hopefully for the $25 investment, you’re getting
your money’s worth. So let me leave you with this; the board is still working on
communication processes, website enhancements, band member relationships,
and most of all, creating a fun environment for its members. Please get involved,
recognize some of the many great things that the NBN has done and pay it a
compliment by recruiting some new members and joining us at a future event.
The last bad ass guitar player that I’d like to leave you with is the latest guitar
animal out of Ireland, Simon McBride. Check out his new album Crossing the
Line. One of the cool things about a leadership position in the NBN is getting
to sample the new music that shows up in the post office box from the music
promoters. I guess the best way to describe this guitar slinger is a cross between
Joe Bonamassa and Chris Duarte; surely this is enough to get your interest.
Thanks for the opportunity to serve you, and I look forward to seeing you at an
NBN event in the near future.

INTERVIEW WITH J.D. SILVIA - by Jack Campbell
Are you a VA native?
I am originally from Maryland’s Eastern Shore (Salisbury, Maryland) but have lived here for the last 26 years in the great city of Chesapeake. I love this area and all it has to offer – seriously.
When did you get interested in blues music?
I became interested in blues at 17, after seeing Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters on a double bill in 1977. It was like going to church and had a profound effect. Seeing Jimmy Thackery & The
Nighthawks at Salisbury State College added fuel to the fire in 1979. Wenner was amazing on harp. I had always loved blues based rock…Cream, Hendrix, Foghat, Led Zeppelin, Canned Heat
and Hot Tuna. So tracing the roots seemed to be a logical progression. In 1983 I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan and became inspired once again. My father’s love of music, which included blues, was
also very instrumental and we attended many blues shows over the years together. He was a huge Rod Piazza, Derek Trucks and Buddy Guy fan!
Tell me more about your father. Was he a big musical influence? Were there any other influential family members in your childhood?
My dad was a huge musical influence. He listened to a variety of different music such as jazz, blues, rock, country and western swing. He didn’t play any instruments but sang in a vocal group in
the ‘50s called “The Harmonettes” and appeared on a Baltimore TV show that featured all home grown talent. They were slated to appear on “The Ted Mack Amateur Hour” but never made it
because two of the five members were called up in the draft. Many years later, they reunited and actually performed together again at my dad’s 50th high school reunion! Ironically, two of the
remaining members sang at my dad’s funeral and I still get choked up now even thinking about it. I’m sure all those folks he sold cars to over the years had no idea of his talents. I didn’t know
until almost 10 years ago!
My aunt Iris played piano and organ in church and gave lessons out of her home. I tried to learn piano from her when I was 8 or 9, but she hummed along with everything she played which
drove me crazy! Later, I brought home a guitar I’d bought from my friend Chuck Adams at school and while trying to learn my father said, “Sounds like you’re strangling a cat. Take that damned
thing back.” I didn’t learn to play guitar properly until I was 26 and cats like Mike Ingmire and Tommy Parker were very helpful in teaching basic theory, technique and suggesting material to
glean from along the way.
Have you held any NBN offices?
I served on the NBN board of directors for 4 years (1994-1998). I participated in the “Blues In Schools” program along with Tim Morgan, was the point of contact for the monthly blues calendar
and of course, promoted the NBN faithfully on my radio show.
Tell me about your years as a DeeJay.
I hosted WNSB’s “Blues Alley” from 1994 through 2002 and featured most of the local working bands on the program, performing ‘live’ in the studio. During this time I met and interviewed
artists such as Koko Taylor, Lonnie Brooks, Hubert Sumlin, Little Georgie & The Shufflin’ Hungarians, Rick Holmstrom, Pinetop Perkins, Shemekia Copeland, The Love Dogs, Steady Rollin’ Bob
Margolin, Deb Coleman and many others. I forged some great friendships with folks who were all integral parts of the music/blues scene here in Hampton Roads that I still maintain. I won
WNSB’s Award for “Most Creative Show” and was a leading fundraiser during pledge drives. It was a great experience and I am happy to say I have a couple of amazing photo albums full of great
memories captured by my friend Deb Malenda, who was a regular part of the show. I met Junior Wells at the old Bait Shack in Waterside, but that whole story gets a little risqué--he was quite a
character! I’m still waiting for Cathy Dixson to find THAT photo…I appeared at many local festivals and performed stage announcement duties with my friend Mark Johnson. At the last Town
Point Jazz & Blues Festival he arranged for me to meet and introduce Buddy Guy. When I walked into the trailer Buddy was talking to guitarist Scott Holt about the recent passing of Junior Wells
and I shook Buddy’s hand…wow!!!
How many different bands have you played in over the years? What were some of the highlights?
I have played in several bands that included “Blues Junction,” “Juke Monkey,” “Black Rose Blues Band,” “Duchess Wilder Band” and my current project, “The J.D. Silvia Band.” I consider myself
very fortunate to have played with some of the finest musicians in the area over the years. I have played for several NBN events including Bayou Boogaloo, Blues at the Beach, and opened for
acts such as Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin as well as Taj Mahal and B.B. King at the NORVA. My new band is really the best thing that ever happened to me--Adam Nixon, Dale Butcher and Russell
Scarborough are all very, very nice cats and monster musicians and I’m playing more now than I ever have.
What’s one thing about J.D. Silvia most people do not know?
I played and sang at both of my parent’s funerals. Both of my parents liked to hear me play and I felt that I had to give them a proper send-off. My love of
music is only surpassed by my love of my daughter Jennifer and grandson Sawyer.
Any advice to young musicians out there?
Practice, because you’ll only get better if you do. Listen to a variety of music, not just blues, or otherwise you’ll stagnate. You can incorporate more
interesting ideas this way. Be an individual and establish your own voice/sound because in the end, people will recognize you and respect you for it. We
all “borrow” stylistically from our heroes but my friend Mark Dunn said it best: “It’s okay to paint Picasso’s picture. Just use a different brush.” This means
if you’re doing a cover tune, make it yours. Put your own stamp on it if you will. Establish your sound and “tone” as you’ll be more instantly recognizable.
“Be unique and be you because everyone else is already taken” – Author Unknown.
Thanks, J.D.!

If you could change one thing about the local music scene, what would it be?
If I could change one thing it would be to have an actual dedicated venue for jazz and blues in Hampton Roads that featured these genres regularly and
consistently, like the Jewish Mother did back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The scene here is rich and diverse and there are several newer artists such as
The Jukes, Herbie D & The Danger Men, Anthony Rosano Band, Seth Stainback, In Layman’s Terms (and of course JDSB) that are spinning the blues our
own way. Go out and support local music, people!
Main Street Blues & Brews Festival - Mike Hilton
Picture a beautiful day in October with an opportunity to enjoy two of your favorite pastimes...sampling a wide array of 30 Craft Brews and listening to a
wide array of live blues music. Well, that is what nearly 1,200 people chose to do on Saturday, October 6th at the 3rd annual Main Street Brews and Blues
Festival in Gloucester, VA. And by all admissions from participants it was a rousing success. Johnny Ray Light, organizer of the music side of the event,
contacted Natchel’ Blues Network to offer a table for membership recruitment as well as to offer people an opportunity to talk blues with other lovers of
the art form. As I entered the grounds the wonderful smell of keg taps being opened mingling with the aroma of the food vendors assured me that Jack
Campbell and I made a smart decision to volunteer.
Up first on stage was Hampton Roads’ own M.S.G.-The Acoustic Blues Trio, who shared their Piedmont style blues and versatility in the musicianship and
instruments that they play. The group showcases how they preserve the music and era of their mentors, Phil Wiggins and the legendary John Cephas.
Next was River City Blues IBC band winners Andrew Alli & Last Night’s Blues Band from Richmond-–a very precision group who doesn’t feel the need to
over amplify their sound, as they are a very original throwback blues band fronted by Andrew Alli. Look out Memphis, they are coming!
Then participants were treated to one of Hampton Roads’ finest blues bands--The J.D. Silvia Band, featuring Anthony Rosano. J.D. has been a mainstay in the
blues scene for many years and is responsible for discovering many local blues musicians who have since emerged on the regional and national level. Folks,
as I was looking across the audience I couldn’t find anyone not grooving to what J.D. and the guys were cooking.
The 4th act was the Lisa Lim Band, who shared their love of high-octane original power blues with a few cleverly reworked covers. Lisa is a guitar phenom
and her new bass player definitely raised the bar. When Lisa left the stage and walked through the crowd playing her guitar everyone was clamoring to get a
video or photo of her hot ax work. People commented to me that they had “never seen a women play guitar like that.”
Last, but certainly not least, was the highlight of the day when Planet Full of Blues took the stage. Johnny Ray Light, vocalist, guitar slinger extraordinaire,
and event organizer, got the crowd worked up in a lather with original tunes complete with a horn section of harp, trumpet and saxophone. Johnny had me
looking around the stage in the beginning, looking for the second guitarist, but it was all him in the likeness of SRV.
Photos by Jack Campbell, J.D. Silvia, & Johnny Ray Light
In conclusion, I viewed this festival as a model for those who are looking to improve their festival or to start their own. But a word to the wise...don’t even
try to do it on the same weekend. These folks have got their act together and would be hard to top. The strength of the sponsorship, organizers, and a huge
volunteer staff that is helpful and cheerful makes it my destination for next October.

BLUES HEAVEN - R.I.P. Nick Curran
Guitarist, songwriter and vocalist Nick Curran passed away on Saturday, October 6th, at his home in Austin, Texas. He was 35 years old.
Curran was a powerhouse performer who drew inspiration from the blues and rockabilly artists of the ‘50s and became renowned for his uncanny knack of
authentically recreating the feel, vibe, and swagger of classic R&B and rock.
He cut his teeth playing with rockabilly legends Ronnie Dawson and Kim Lenz. A native of Maine, Curran moved to Dallas and immersed himself in the Texas
roots music scene, eventually releasing two albums on the Texas Jamboree label, Fixin’ Your Head and Nitelife Boogie. As he would do on all his albums, Curran
used vintage recording equipment and a one-take technique to achieve not only the sound but also the feel of vintage 45s.
His national debut, Doctor Velvet on Blind Pig, was released in 2003 to critical acclaim, with a number of publications calling it the album of the year. It also
attracted international attention with rave reviews in the U.K. and Germany and a “Best New International Blues Artist” award in France.
Meanwhile, Nick and his band, the Nitelifes, were generating an ever-growing buzz with their head-turning performances at festivals and clubs across the country,
including a stunning performance at the 2003 San Francisco Blues Festival. Calling him a “don’t miss performer,” Blues Revue said, “Internet discussion boards are
shot through with postings and excited conversations by stunned people who just saw Nick and his band for the first time.”
A twenty-first century hybrid of Little Richard and T-Bone Walker, Curran displayed a veteran’s mastery of the nuances of roots rock and blues idioms, yet did it in
such a way that made the familiar sound startlingly new. With his raw, powerful voice and stinging guitar, he quickly established himself as one of the freshest,
most exciting new talents on the scene.
Doctor Velvet included guest appearances by Curran admirer Jimmie Vaughan (who called him “just a total ass-kicker”). The album
went on to win the W.C. Handy Award, blues music’s most prestigious award, for “Best New Artist Debut.” Nick Curran and the
Nitelifes released their second Blind Pig album, Player!, in 2004 but the band broke up shortly afterward when Nick was asked to
join Kim Wilson’s latest reincarnation of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, just in time to record the band’s Painted On release.
He toured with the T-Birds for three years, and also worked on side projects such as Deguello, a blues/punk combo he formed with
another T-Bird alum, Ronnie James, and a punk/rock ‘n’ roll band named The Flash Boys. In 2008 he performed four songs in a
scene in the HBO Series “True Blood.” His last album, Reform School Girl, was released in 2010 on the Eclectro Groove label. That
year he was also diagnosed with oral cancer, and had been undergoing treatment until succumbing on October 6th.

INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE MEMPHIS, TN JAN 29-FEB 2, 2013
The 2013 International Blues Challenge will be the 29th year of Blues musicians from around the world
competing for cash, prizes, and industry recognition. The Blues Foundation will present the 29th
International Blues Challenge January 29-February 2, 2013 in Memphis, TN. The world’s largest gathering of
Blues acts represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations for the
Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to take their act to the international stage. In 2012, 119 bands and
86 solo/duo acts entered, filling the clubs up and down Beale Street for the quarter-finals on Wednesday and
Thursday, the semi-finals on Friday and the finals at the Orpheum Theater on Saturday. We will have at least
that many in 2013.
The 29th year of the International Blues Challenge will once again include a youth showcase for those under
the age of 21. The 29th IBC will include an afternoon (Friday, February 1, 2013) of talented young people
showcasing their talents for record labels, media, festivals, managers, talent buyers and the fans.
Watch www.blues.org for further information. Email [email protected] if you have any questions.
The week of events will once again kick off Tuesday night with a Meet & Greet hosted by the Beale Street
Merchants Association at the New Daisy Theater, followed by the FedEx International Showcase. In addition
to the evening Blues competition, the days are filled with seminars and workshops and topped off in a
moving Saturday morning brunch in which the Blues community will honor its own with the prestigious Keeping the Blues Alive (KBA) awards
that honor the men and women, who have made significant contributions to the Blues music world, in 20 categories such as journalism, literature
and photography and to the best clubs and festivals, as well as managers, promoters and producers.
Media Sponsors include Beale Street Caravan, Big City Rhythm and Blues, Blues Festival Guide, Blues Revue, Downtowner, House of Blues Radio
Hour, Living Blues, Memphis Flyer, Memphis Music Magazine and WREG-TV.
The 29th International Blues Challenge is sponsored by ArtsMemphis, bandVillage, Beale Street Merchants Association, Budweiser of Memphis,
FedEx, Gibson, Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, T. Clifton Art, Tennessee Arts Commission, and the

Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The Bluesman” Beachum
MAGIC SLIM & THE TEARDROPS
Bad Boy
Blind Pig BPDC 5147
www.blindpigrecords.com
Magic Slim, whose real name is Morris Holt, has a hot, new CD release from Blind Pig with his backup group, The
Teardrops. Morris, or should I say, Magic Man, just turned 75, but you would never know it. Damn, I hope I’m kickin’ like
him when I’m his age!
From the opening cut by Eddie Taylor, Bad Boy blows the speakers off the floor with some hard-drivin’ Chicago Blues! And it doesn’t
stop there and never does. Next up is Denise LaSalle’s “Someone Else Is Steppin’ In.” Magic’s raw vocals paired with his smooth guitar
licks just make this cut roll. He covers Muddy Waters’ “Champagne and Reefer,” but makes it his own, as he does on Albert King’s
“Matchbox Blues.” Two other cuts that are on my favorites list are J.B. Lenoir’s up-tempo cut “How Much More Long” and Lil Ed’s “Older
Woman,” but you’d have to listen to the words to understand that one!
This CD is a true slice of Chicago Blues. Magic Slim is a Chicago Blues master and this release proves it. If you want a great pure blues
CD to add to your collection, go out and get this one. You’ll be dancing around your living room, like I was. Shor’Nuf’.

JOHN LEE HOOKER, JR.
All Hooked Up
Self Release
www.johnleehookerjr.com/music.html
When your name echoes the name of a blues legend, the expectations run high. In the case of John Lee Hooker,
Jr.’s latest venture, it’s not disappointment. John Jr.’s latest CD, All Hooked Up, is a powerhouse of hard-hitting
Detroit blues, with a few other favors thrown in for good measure to balance the blues stew he’s cooked up. And, believe me, it’s a tasty
one at that! The recipe calls for some mean guitar work, slammin’ vocals, and some mean horns just to finish it off.
John Lee Hooker, Jr. started playing the blues when he was a mere child of eight at a local radio station in Detroit. He later played blues
in local clubs and with his father on tour gigs. In 2004, he released his first own multi-award-winning CD, Blues with a Vengeance.
Those were followed by Cold as Ice (2006), All Odds Against Me (2007), and Live in Istanbul, Turkey (2010). Now, in 2012, we have
All Hooked Up. This CD ticks off with a funky tune about a housewife tired of the same old rut in “Tired of Being a Housewife.” “Hard
Times” seems to be autobiographical about his daddy being dead and some bad things happening in his life. “Let Me Be” talks about
folks he really doesn’t want to be around. Listening to the song, I can agree. One fun cut is “It Must Be The Meds.” You gotta listen to
this one!
This CD is chock-full of great tunes. Not enough space to talk about them all. The best way for you to know is to go out and buy the CD.
I recommend you do. This one you need in the rack. As a bonus, this comes with a bonus DVD that is fantastic in its own right.

Blues CD Reviews - Larry Berwald
IAN SIEGAL & THE MISSSISSIPPI MUDBLOODS
Candy Store Kid
Nugene Reords NUG1204
www.nugenerecords.com
So, I’m handed a grocery bag full of CDs, and asked to pick some to review. It was fun popping them in and out of my van’s
CD player as I listened to about 30 seconds of a tune, then four or five tunes. You really can form a pretty good opinion of
what’s in store this way. Then one record went in and I heard the whole first song. Then the second, third and so on, until about the eighth tune
when I remembered I was supposed to skip around.
You got it…I was captured. Something felt so authentic about this older black man with his husky voice, and a little crude, but soulful on lead
guitar. The lyrics were like a southern swamp stream of consciousness that went on and on with realistic images of high humidity and Spanish
moss drippin’ from the red oak trees. Later on when I could examine the CD package, I found that not only is this guy white, he’s a Brit!
Damn it…they’re invading again! Again we need someone from across the pond to tell us how great the music in our own back yard is. Did I
mention that this record is Freakin’ GREAT? Like other smart Brits, he uses some native sons to tell the stories (see Clapton/Dominoes…Lennon/
Delany & Bonnie).
Ian Siegal borrows Luther and Cody Dickinson (aka The North Mississippi Allstars) to git-er-done. Other partners-in-crime are Alvin Youngblood
Hart, Garry Burnside and a team of soulful backup singers. The songwriting (mostly Ian) is cliché free, poetic, funky and seriously N’awlins
southern. The playing is COOL throughout and the production is gritty and real. I still can’t believe this guy wasn’t raised by crawfish! Go on and
git this record!
