USA rocked 4-2 by Belgium
in Cleveland friendly match

CLEVELAND (AP) — After the stomping,
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann got stumped.
Not long after his team was overrun 4-2 on
Wednesday night in an international friendly
by a talented Belgium team that dominated
the Americans for 90 minutes, Klinsmann was
asked if there were three positives to be taken
from the loss.
“Um,” Klinsmann said, pausing. “Three?
You challenge me with three?”
Klinsmann smiled and then danced around
coming up with an adequate answer.
There really wasn’t much he could say.
Christian Benteke scored two goals in the
second half and Marouane Fellaini had another
as Belgium took advantage of U.S. defensive
breakdowns and scored three times after halftime in a one-sided thrashing of the Americans,
who hoped the match — and an upcoming one
Sunday in Washington D.C. against Germany
— would help get them ready for upcoming
World Cup qualifiers.
Belgium, boasting a strong roster with 10
players from the English Premier League,
overpowered a U.S. team that has some work
to do on defense before it can even think about
making the field for next summer’s World Cup
in Brazil.
“We just have to tighten up,” said goalkeeper
Tim Howard, who gave up just one goal before
he was replaced in the second half by Brad
Guzan. “Most of the teams we’re going to play
have firepower, so it’s on us to put the other
teams on our terms defensively. We should be
the ones taking the space away or giving them
space. We should be dictating the tempo of the
game.”
Benteke, who plays for Aston Villa, scored
in the 56th and 71st minutes for Belgium,
ranked 15th in the world and considered a rising
European power.
Geoff Cameron scored in the 22nd minute
and Clint Dempsey pounded in a penalty kick
in the 80th minute for the U.S, which will
play World Cup qualifiers next month against
Jamaica, Panama and Honduras.
Klinsmann figured Belgium would provide
a stiff challenge for his evolving team, which
is missing several key players. And while the
Americans had some nice moments, the Belgians controlled the game from the outset.
Still, Klinsmann said it was a good learning
experience for his squad to play against one of
the world’s best teams.
“This is why we want to play teams like Belgium and like Germany and like Russia.” Klinsmann said, “because there is so much that you
can read from those games and there is so much
you can see. Obviously, you want to win them.
But I would rather play Belgium 10 more times
than El Salvador 100 times because that is when
you learn.”
Before a crowd of 27,720, Belgium took
advantage of poor defense to score three of its
goals.
With the score 1-1 in the 56th minute, a turnover by American midfielder Brad Davis was
compounded by defender Omar Gonzalez’s
failure to clear the ball. Gonzalez could have

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — One year after squandering a
lead with the national championship on the line, Oklahoma comes
rolling into the Women’s College World Series as the favorite to
win this year’s NCAA softball title and the toast of the sport.
The Sooners (52-4) lead the nation in scoring, they have the best
earned-run average and they arrive at college softball’s premiere
event after clobbering their way through the opening rounds of the
NCAA tournament. Both of their super regional victories came via
the run rule, as did two of their three wins in regional play.
Oklahoma even had two of the three national player of the
year finalists with Keilani Ricketts repeating in front of slugging
teammate Lauren Chamberlain.
But as the World Series begins Thursday, coach Patty Gasso
isn’t putting the Sooners head and shoulders above the competition. “Anybody can do it. If it was supposed to be Oklahoma’s,
we wouldn’t be sitting here right now. You would have given us
the trophy and we would have walked away. And that’s not how
it works,” Gasso said Wednesday.
“So, it’s the team that is really at their best and we’re fighting
really hard just like everybody else to be at our best, but it’s
going to take those little breaks that come along the way.”
The Sooners know all about those little breaks.
Last June, Ricketts homered and the Sooners were leading
3-0 in the decisive Game 3 of last year’s World Series when rain
started falling. Ricketts threw three wild pitches to allow one
run to score and couldn’t recover after the game was delayed,
allowing Alabama to take the lead on its way to a 5-4 victory.
It was Ricketts who struck out to end the game and set off the
Crimson Tide’s celebration.
“Obviously, last year was a disappointment and it still lives
in these players somewhat. But this is such a different road with
different players and it’s just a different team,” Gasso said. “We
really don’t look back anymore. We just look forward.”
What’s ahead is a difficult, balanced field that includes two
teams apiece from the SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big 12. Thursday’s four games in the double-elimination tournament are:
Oklahoma-Michigan, Florida-Tennessee, Texas-Arizona State

Mayweather to face
Alvarez on Sept. 14
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Floyd Mayweather will fight young
Mexican star Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand.
“I chose my opponent for September 14th and it’s Canelo
Alvarez,” Mayweather said Wednesday night on Twitter. “I’m
giving the fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand.”
Alvarez sent a tweet in Spanish announcing the fight.
The 36-year-old Mayweather is unbeaten in 44 fights, the last
a unanimous 12-round decision over Robert Guerrero on May 4
at the MGM Grand in defense of his 147-pound title. Alvarez is
42-0-1. The 22-year-old fighter unified the 154-pounds titles April
20 in San Antonio with a unanimous victory over Austin Trout.
The fight will be contested at a catch weight of 152 pounds for
all of their titles. As rare as it is for two unbeaten fighters in their
prime to meet, it is just as rare for them to be fighting for titles in
two weight classes. “Floyd has said from Day 1 that he wants to
give fans the best fight out there and here it is,” Mayweather’s comanager, Leonard Ellerbe, told the AP. “We have the two biggest
stars in the sport and they’re fighting each other Sept. 14.”
The bout will be the second in Mayweather’s six-fight contract with Showtime that could pay him more than $200 million.

Pacers & Heat
preparing for a
crucial Game 5
ANGELS 4, DODGERS 3
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jered Weaver
pitched six strong innings in his first start in
nearly eight weeks and Mark Trumbo hit a goahead two-run homer as the Angles beat the
Dodgers. The Angels tied a season high with
their fifth straight home win while snapping a
two-game skid.
Weaver (1-1) allowed one run and five hits,
struck out seven and walked none in his first
home start of the season and 100th of his career
at Angel Stadium. The right-hander came off
the disabled list, where he’d been since April 9
with a broken left elbow that occurred when he
was trying to get out of the way of a line drive at
Texas. Chris Capuano (1-4) gave up three runs
and six hits in 5 2-3 innings. He walked four.
CARDINALS 5, ROYALS 3
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Pinch hitter Daniel Descalso hit a two-run single with the bases loaded
to snap an eighth-inning tie and help St. Louis
rally past scuffling Kansas City.
Luis Mendoza got his first career hit and RBI
and held the Cardinals to a run in 5 2-3 innings
before the bullpen failed for the Royals, who
have lost a season-worst eight in a row.
Matt Holliday and Carlos Beltran homered
for the Cardinals, who have won seven of eight
and lead the majors with a 35-17 record. Randy
Choate (1-0) got the last out in the eighth and
Edward Mujica finished for his 17th save in 17
chances. Beltran hit his 12th homer off Aaron
Crow (0-1) to open the eighth.
PIRATES 5, TIGERS 3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pedro Alvarez’s
two-run double sparked a seventh-inning rally
that lifted Pittsburgh over Detroit.
Travis Snider added an RBI double and Jordy
Mercer laid down a perfect suicide squeeze as
the Pirates erupted late against Anibal Sanchez
(5-5) and scored four times.
Miguel Cabrera hit his 15th homer of the
season for Detroit. He flied out to the right-field
wall with a runner on to end the game as Pittsburgh beat the Tigers for the second straight night.
Bryan Morris (2-2) picked up the win in
relief of A.J. Burnett. Jason Grilli pitched the
ninth for his major league-leading 22nd save.
PHILLIES 4, RED SOX 3
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Domonic Brown
hit a pair of homers, Erik Kratz and Ryan
Howard also had solo shots to back Kyle Kendrick and Philadelphia beat Boston.
Kendrick (5-3) allowed two runs and four
hits in six innings, helping the Phillies win
their second straight against the Red Sox to get
within one game of .500.
Antonio Bastardo pitched the seventh, Mike
Adams struck out two in a perfect eighth and
MIAMI (AP) — Several times around the start of these playoffs, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra insisted that the postseason
path his team would wind up navigating had the potential to be
more challenging than the route they took to the NBA championship a year ago.
He’s apparently correct, probably to his own chagrin.
The defending NBA champion Heat are in a bit of trouble.
They can’t get enough rebounds, can’t get Dwyane Wade on
track, can’t get consistency out of Chris Bosh — and will likely
see all those story lines either grow exponentially or basically
disappear Thursday night, when they host to the Indiana Pacers
in Game 5 of a super-competitive Eastern Conference finals
that’s now knotted at two games apiece.
“We have a great locker room of Alpha competitors,” Spoelstra said Wednesday. “And so they take this very seriously.
We’re playing against a worthy opponent and if we don’t play
well, they beat us. If they don’t play well and we impose our
identity, we beat them. That’s what this is all about. So let’s lace
‘em up and let’s get ready for Game 5.”
Game 6 will be in Indiana on Saturday night, while the
Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs keep waiting
to see who they’ll face in the NBA Finals starting on June 6.
History says the Game 5 winner when a series is tied at 2-2
has a colossal upper hand, though that’s an axiom that the Heat
both proved and disproved last season.
When the Heat and Pacers split the first four games of their
second-round series last year, Miami rolled to a 115-83 home
win in Game 5 and captured the series in six games. One round
later, Miami lost a home Game 5 of the East finals to Boston,
then went on the road for Game 6 and got a virtuoso 45-point
night from LeBron James to stave off elimination before coming
home and winning a nailbiter of a Game 7 to advance.
Given all that, it’s no wonder why Spoelstra said the Heat
aren’t looking back at any series as a blueprint for how the final
acts of this one should go.
“We don’t need confidence to go into any game,” James said.
“We’re a confident bunch. We’re excited to get the opportunity
to go back to our home and play Game 5.”
Confidence is not exactly in short supply around the Pacers
right now, either.
Indiana came into the series saying — and believing — that it
could find a way to oust the team that was virtually preordained
as a champion entering these playoffs. That hasn’t changed.
“We’ve got to be at our best,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said
Wednesday.
“Our intensity, our determination, our focus, we’ve got to
keep getting better if we’re going to beat this team.”
The statistical trends probably aren’t surprising. The Heat
have scored 402 points, the Pacers 394. The Heat have shot 47
percent from the field, the Pacers 46 percent. The Pacers have
shot 37 percent from 3-point range, the Heat 34 percent.
Miami is better at forcing turnovers, the Pacers are better at
rebounding.
Miami has forced Indiana into 14 more turnovers in the
series, but the Pacers are outrebounding the Heat by 10 boards
per game.
Pacers center Roy Hibbert is averaging 12 rebounds; Bosh
has grabbed 13 rebounds — total — in the series, or as many as
Miami guard Ray Allen has despite being half a foot shorter and
playing 32 fewer minutes.
“We know what they run, they know what we run,” Hibbert
said. “So I guess it’s more about who wants it more.”
Hibbert has had no match in this series. Miami plays without
a true center, and Bosh often ends up in the same general spots
on offense as a guard would. So at 7-foot-2, Hibbert almost
seems like he has permission to do whatever he wants in the
paint, and has picked the right time to play the series of his life.
“We don’t want to go home,” Hibbert said. “Miami is one of
the best teams, along with San Antonio, and we know we have
an uphill battle and we trust each other and love each other and
that’s just grown, that love for each other. This is probably the
first team I’ve felt like that about because last year even there
were some guys were not all about winning.”
That can’t be said now.
“We understand that the champs are going to come back and
be ready to play at home,” Pacers star Paul George said. “And
we need to be ready to come out and play well.”
Game 5 was a cavalcade of mistakes for the Heat, who had
their second-worst shooting night of the entire season at 39
percent.

Navarro hit three home runs in the game. Nationals waste 4 HRs
in 9-6 loss to Baltimore
BALTIMORE (AP) — Chris Davis went 4
for 4 with two home runs, and the Baltimore
Orioles overcame three homers by Ryan Zimmerman to beat the Washington Nationals 9-6
Wednesday night.
In a wild game before 39,129 fans, each
team slugged four home runs and the Orioles
rallied from a four-run deficit against one of the
best pitchers in the game.
Zimmerman hit solo homers in the first and
fourth innings before adding a two-run drive in
the fifth, all off Chris Tillman. He got a chance
at a fourth homer but struck out in the seventh.
Davis hit a solo drive in the fourth and capped
a six-run seventh with his major league-leading
19th homer, a two-run shot off Tyler Clippard.
Johnson (1-1) pitched 2 1-3 innings and Jim
Johnson worked a perfect ninth for his 16th
save.
Baltimore trailed 6-3 in the seventh before
rallying against Jordan Zimmermann (8-3), who
gave up seven runs and 10 hits in six-plus innings.
He came in with a 1.71 ERA and a streak of 15
straight starts allowing three runs or less.
CUBS 9, WHITE SOX 3
CHICAGO (AP) — Dioner Navarro had the
first three-homer game of his career, connecting
from both sides of the plate at Wrigley Field to
lead the Cubs over the White Sox.
Navarro had never homered more than once
in a game, but he got his swing going while
driving in a career-high six runs and scoring
four times. He hit a solo homer in the second
to break a 1-all tie and added a two-run shot off
John Danks (0-1) in the fourth. He then sent a
towering shot to the street beyond the right-field
bleachers for a three-run homer off Brian Omogrosso in the seventh.
Scott Feldman (5-4) went six innings,
allowing two runs and six hits. He struck out
seven without a walk and improved to 5-1 in his
past seven outings.
METS 9, YANKEES 4
NEW YORK (AP) — Slumping infielders
Ike Davis and Ruben Tejada sparked a five-run
first inning that kept the Mets sailing along in
this surprising Subway Series with a victory
over the Yankees.
Tejada hit a leadoff single, Davis drove in
two runs and the Mets won with Jeremy Hefner
(1-5) on the mound for the first time all season.
They’ve taken three in a row from their crosstown rivals for their first four-game winning
streak of the year.
Yankees starter David Phelps (3-3) got only
one out — and perhaps he wasn’t completely
healthy. The right-hander, who had unusual
trouble with his command, left his previous
outing after he was hit on the right forearm by
a line drive.

This recent undated photo provided by Benedictine College shows basketball player Jallen
Messersmith. Messersmith of Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., has come out and is believed
to be the first openly gay player in U.S. men’s college basketball. Messersmith told The Associated
Press on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 he revealed his sexual orientation to teammates at the NAIA
school before last season and approached Outsports.com about telling his story. Outsports.com is

(AP) — It didn’t take Jason Collins for Jallen
Messersmith to come out as gay.
Messersmith is a 6-foot-7 shot-blocking
specialist from tiny Benedictine College in
Atchison, Kan. He also is believed to be the first
openly gay active player in U.S. men’s college
basketball.
Messersmith told The Associated Press on
Wednesday that he revealed his sexual orientation to his coach last summer and his teammates
before the season. He later told his story to Outsports.com, a website that covers gay issues in
sports, and its story was posted Tuesday — a
month after Collins, a Washington Wizards
reserve, came out in a Sports Illustrated article
as the first openly gay active player in the NBA.
“He wasn’t a buffer for me,” Messersmith said, adding that just about everyone at
2,000-student Benedictine knew his sexual orientation months ago. He said he had not corresponded with Collins. “It’s awesome to have
another person in my sport to come out (nationally) beforehand,” Messersmith said.
Messersmith said he was interviewed by
Outsports.com in March. He said he’s received
nothing but positive feedback since the story
was posted.
Though he acknowledged he felt anxious
about the reaction, he said he wanted to come
out to help other gay athletes feel comfortable
about who they are.
“The big thing for me, why I wanted to
do it, before the whole Jason Collins thing, is
there weren’t a lot of basketball-related stories
like this,” Messersmith said. “When I started
coming out, I didn’t have anyone to look to for
advice or to see how their story went. People
can look to see what happened to me — and
there are positive things going on.”
Benedictine is affiliated with the Roman
Catholic Church, which condemns homosexual
acts but teaches that gay individuals should be
treated with respect, compassion and sensitivity.
Messersmith said he’s not a practicing
member of any religion now. He said he was
raised as a Mormon and, even though that religion also disapproves of homosexual acts, he
enjoys the full support of his family.
Benedictine athletic director Charlie Gartenmayer and men’s basketball coach Ryan Moody
declined comment, referring to a statement the
school released Wednesday.
“We support Jallen as a Benedictine College
student and as a member of the Raven basketball team,” the statement said. “Obviously, it
would be inappropriate for us to discuss the private lives of students. As an institution we treat
all students with respect and sensitivity.”
Brett Fisher, a starting guard and one of
Messersmith’s best friends on the team, said
Messersmith came out to teammates individually. Fisher said some were shocked and others
didn’t blink.
“I think it takes a lot of courage to come out
to everyone you know,” Fisher said. “He sort of
feels like he had a thousand pounds lifted from
his shoulders when he came out.”
Messersmith said he couldn’t have hoped for
a better reaction from teammates.
“A couple came up and told me if I have any
issues with anybody, they’ve got my back,” he
said.
The 20-year-old from Blue Springs, Mo.,
will be a junior for the Ravens next season. He
appeared in 28 games this past season, starting
the last eight, and averaged 4.9 points and 3.6
rebounds. He blocked 53 shots, and his average
of 1.89 a game ranked third in NAIA Division I.
Messersmith said he comes from a basketball family. He also plays piano and likes to
draw in addition to playing video games and listening to music. He’s an accounting major who
is involved in student government and serves as
manager for the Benedictine women’s lacrosse
club team.
Messersmith said he’s received more than
100 texts, emails and messages through social
networks since Tuesday, one from as far away
as South Africa. He said he couldn’t imagine
what the public’s reaction would be if he played
in a major-college basketball program.
“For sure it would be a bigger story, and this
seems pretty big,” he said.
Kerri Kos, a fellow Benedictine student and
Messersmith’s best friend, said she was scared
for him when he told her he wanted to come out
to the basketball team.
“He doesn’t want his teammates to live in
the dark about it,” she said. “The basketball
team is incredibly close. To be part of the team,
he needed to be completely honest about it. He
took a huge leap of faith, and people responded
positively. I’m so happy about it because it
shows progress.”

Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 11th save
in 11 tries. Papelbon allowed an RBI single to
Jacoby Ellsbury, snapping his scoreless string
at 19 1-3 innings.
BLUE JAYS 3, BRAVES 0
ATLANTA (AP) — Melky Cabrera had
three hits, including a two-run single, and four
Toronto pitchers combined on a four-hitter to
lead the Blue Jays past Atlanta.
Last-place Toronto went with a pitcher-bycommittee approach to fill a hole in the rotation. Esmil Rogers lasted 3 1-3 innings in his
first start since 2011, and two pitchers just up
from the minors shut down the Braves. Juan
Perez (1-0) went 2 2-3 innings, Neil Wagner
got through the seventh and eighth, and Casey
Janssen earned his 11th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Atlanta starter Kris Medlen (1-6) took a liner
off the left leg in the second and didn’t return
the next inning because of a contusion to his
upper calf. He is expected to make his next start.
TWINS 4, BREWERS 1
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Aaron Hicks homered again and made another run-saving catch
for Minnesota, helping Samuel Deduno and the
Twins beat Milwaukee. Deduno (1-1) pitched
into the eighth inning, the longest start for a
Twins pitcher in more than a month, and gave
up four hits and one run. He beat Marco Estrada
(4-3), who was done in by a three-run first as the
Brewers lost their fifth straight game.
The night before in Milwaukee, Hicks had a
home run and a double that set up the go-ahead
run in the 14th inning. The rookie center fielder
also made a jumping grab at the wall to take
a homer away from Carlos Gomez. This time,
Hicks snagged a sinking liner by Rickie Weeks
to end the fourth.
ATHLETICS 9, GIANTS 6
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Tommy Milone
won his second straight decision following a
five-start skid, pinch-hitter Nate Freiman had a
two-run single, and the Athletics beat the Giants
for their sixth straight win. Yoenis Cespedes hit
an RBI triple in the first to extend his careerbest hitting streak to 11 games, and Jed Lowrie
added an RBI double as the A’s (31-23) moved
a season-best eight games above .500 for the
first time since they were 12-4 on April 17.
They won for the 11th time in 12 games.
Milone (5-5) outpitched Tim Lincecum and
got plenty of support, too. He received three or
fewer runs of support in each of his previous
seven outings. Hunter Pence homered for the
second straight game and Brett Pill also connected for San Francisco.
INDIANS 5, REDS 2
CLEVELAND (AP) — Justin Masterson
pitched six solid innings, Jason Giambi and
Mark Reynolds homered, and Cleveland broke
a five-game losing streak with a win over
Cincinnati.
Masterson (8-3) worked out of a basesloaded jam with nobody out in the sixth to
preserve a 2-1 lead. Cincinnati’s only run off
the right-hander came on Joey Votto’s two-out
homer in the first.
Giambi’s three-run homer in the sixth off
Bronson Arroyo (5-5) pushed the margin to
four runs for Cleveland, which scored only 14
runs during the skid.
Reynolds’ homer to lead off the third tied the
game before Nick Swisher’s RBI double gave
the Indians a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
PADRES 3, MARINERS 2, 10 INNINGS
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eric Stults had a
career-high 12 strikeouts and Will Venable
drove in the winning run as San Diego rallied in
the bottom of the 10th to beat Seattle.
Venable’s third game-ending hit drove
home Chris Denorfia from third to complete an
improbable comeback after the offense struggled mightily through the first eight innings.
Kyle Blanks forced extras in the bottom of
the ninth with a one-out sacrifice fly off Mariners
closer Tom Wilhemsen, who blew his second
save in 13 tries. Jason Bay homered off Padres
closer Huston Street to give Seattle a 2-1 lead in
the ninth. Luke Gregerson (3-2) earned the win,
while Yoervis Medina (1-1) took the loss.
ASTROS 6, ROCKIES 3
DENVER (AP) — J.D. Martinez hit a goahead RBI single in the eighth inning, Carlos
Pena connected for a home run as part of a threerun ninth as Houston rallied against Colorado’s
bullpen. The Astros overcame 12 strikeouts and
Troy Tulowitzki’s first multihomer game since
2011 in taking the opener of a two-game set at
Coors Field. Paul Clemens (3-2) pitched 1 2-3
innings of scoreless relief.
Marwin Gonzalez led off the eighth with
a single off reliever Edgmer Escalona (1-2).
Jose Altuve was intentionally walked and Rex
Brothers relieved Escalona. Brothers struck out
Jason Castro but Martinez hit a two-out single
up the middle, scoring Gonzalez to put the
Astros in front by a run.
RAYS 3, MARLINS 1
MIAMI (AP) — Roberto Hernandez bounced
back from two rough outings and pitched 8 2-3
innings to help Tampa Bay send Miami to its
season-worst eighth straight loss.Kelly Johnson
and Yunel Escobar each drove in a run as the
Rays won their fourth in row. Tampa Bay has
taken 12 of its last 13 against the Marlins and is
an AL-best 8-1 in interleague play.
Hernandez (3-5) limited Miami to just
one unearned run and three hits, striking out
five. After Chris Coghlan’s leadoff double,
Hernandez retired 26 of the next 27 batters,
including 15 in a row. Fernando Rodney got
his 10th save in 15 opportunities. Tom Koehler
(0-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in eight
innings for the Marlins.
and Nebraska-Washington.
“Clearly, they’re the team that we have to beat, and they’re a
great team,” said coach Carol Hutchins, who led the Wolverines
to the 2005 national title. “They’re a great team in every category,
in every aspect. As a coach, you look at the opponent and try to
look for a weakness that you can exploit, and we’re still looking.”
The rest of the teams in the field all have their strengths, too.
Arizona State has won two championships since 2008, with current
ace Dallas Escobedo in the circle two years ago to win it all, and
Washington was the 2009 champ. Defending champion Alabama
was knocked off by SEC rival Tennessee in the super regionals.
The country’s top four scoring teams — Oklahoma, Tennessee, Michigan and Arizona State — are all present. Not far
behind is second-seeded Florida, which has taken a step away
from relying so heavily on the long ball and also ranks in the top
25 in stolen bases.
“Home runs come and go, especially on a stage like this,”
said coach Tim Walton, who got the Gators to the championship
series in 2009 and 2011. “I think you really have to do a good
job of playing catch, pitching really well. I don’t think you can
do it with a home run. We’ve tried. We’ve tried a couple times
to do it with home runs. It didn’t work so well for us.”
Texas, which got to the World Series after a no-hitter by
Blaire Luna in the super regionals, is one of two teams in the
field that have beaten Oklahoma. The other is 14th-seeded
Nebraska, which is in the final eight for the first time since 2002.
None of them has beaten Ricketts (31-1), whose only loss this
season came against Louisville. After last season’s disappointment, she started this year with a no-hitter and has a 1.22 ERA
and 311 strikeouts to go along with a .375 average, 13 home
runs and 54 RBIs.
“She brings so much to the table, but it’s more than a onewoman show as you know with OU,” Longhorns coach Connie
Clark said. “They’re very balanced and very talented, but the
game is the game. ... With the eight great teams matching up,
you’re just not really sure what’s going to happen. You just play
hard. I think any of the eight teams could get it done this week.”

easily booted it over the touch or end line, but instead left the
ball for Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne, who centered it to Benteke
for an easy tap-in.
“I took the touch a little bit too far,” Gonzalez explained.
“But that’s not going to deter me from taking that touch again.
Other than that, you learn from it and hopefully we come out a
lot better against Germany and we can start preparing for the
games that matter. These games are really just for experience.”
Good thing. Guzan came up with a nice save in the 64th
minute, but seconds later he was fishing the ball from his net
again. Fellaini, the Everton midfielder known as much for his
puffy hairdo as his skills, headed his goal into the left corner off
a beautiful cross by De Bruyne to make it 3-1.
In the 71st minute, Benteke streaked behind defenders DaMarcus Beasley and Matt Besler and chipped in a pass from Steven
Defour.
The U.S. later cut the deficit in half when referee Jeffery Solis
awarded a penalty kick after calling Toby Alderweireld for a
questionable hand ball in the box.
Earlier, while being outplayed and unable to get off a shot,
the U.S. tied it 1-1 in the 22nd minute on Cameron’s first international goal.
Graham Zusi sent an effective short corner kick across the
goal mouth to Dempsey posted on the right side. The U.S. captain alertly headed it back over Belgium’s defense to Cameron,
who jumped and headed it past keeper Simon Mignolet.
Howard was tested a few more times in the first half as Belgium mounted several scoring threats and outshot the Americans 5-1 in the first 45 minutes.
The Americans also caught two fortunate breaks in the
opening half.
In the 26th minute, speedy Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku’s
goal was waved off by an offside call. However, TV replays
appeared to show Lukaku was onside.
Also, Beasley, playing in his 100th international game, might
have gotten away with a hand ball when he blocked a pass inside
the box.
The first collapse by the U.S. defense allowed Belgium to take
a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. De Bruyne played a through ball
to Lukaku, who got behind Gonzalez. Lukaku got off a quick
shot from the left side that was smothered by Howard, who was
unable to control the rebound and Kevin Mirallas, Howard’s
teammate at Everton, scored on a nice chip into the empty net.
An angry Howard got up from the ground screaming after
the goal. “I’m angry pretty much by every goal,” Howard said,
smiling. “Any time there is a defensive breakdown you want to
correct it, and at this level often times you get punished for it.
That’s a lesson to be learned.”
On this night, there were a lot of those for the Americans.

on any of that because this is a tough game.
The main thing is, I’m very happy to have been
invited back.”
Although he lives in Los Angeles, Brown
vowed to have a constant presence with the
Browns, who haven’t been able to win with
any consistency since their expansion return in
1999.
“You will see as much of me as they can
stand because somehow, sometimes I wake up
thinking I’m the coach and it doesn’t work that
way,” Brown said. “I’m going to be here quite a
bit and I will be on call to the Cleveland Browns
first. My activities, whatever, will take a secondary position to the needs of the Cleveland
Browns.”
Never one to mince his words or hold back
on an opinion, Brown promised to continue
being himself in his new position with Haslam,
who bought the franchise last year from Randy
Lerner.
“I wouldn’t be sitting here if there was not
a relationship between the two of us,” Brown
said, with Haslam seated to his left. “Jimmy
doesn’t bite his tongue, so I kind of like that. I
try not to bite mine, as most of you know. But
I think with Jimmy I will be a little more under
control.”
“I doubt it,” Haslam said with a laugh.
While Brown’s return has given Haslam a
boost with the Browns, he remains embroiled in
a federal investigation for alleged fraud at Pilot
Flying J, his family-owned truck-stop chain. On
Wednesday, two PFJ employees pleaded guilty
to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud
and conspiracy. Federal prosecutors allege
members of Pilot’s sales team deliberately
withheld rebates to boost profits.
Brown has also had his share of legal troubles, including a string of arrests for assaults
on women. He vowed his full sport of Cleveland’s embattled owner and said the timing of
his return could help comfort Haslam, who has
maintained he was unaware of any fraud.
“That is my guy,” Brown said. “I have a
relationship with him. I believe in him. I stand
behind him. Yes, I’m glad this timing is the way
it is. I’m here, I believe in this man and that’s it.
I have been through a thousand things, but ultimately I turned out to be a decent human being.
Volatile and involved in controversial things
and so forth and so on, but in America that’s the
kind of country we have.”
2013
CLEVELAND (AP) — As outspoken,
unapologetic and intimidating as ever — even
at age 77 — Jim Brown has reunited with the
Cleveland Browns.
Still going strong, the great No. 32 is back
where he belongs.
“Here I am,” he said.
The Hall of Fame running back, who was
estranged for years from the NFL team where
he starred in the 1950s and ‘60s — after his
previous role was eliminated by former president Mike Holmgren — was welcomed back
to the Browns on Wednesday by new owner
Jimmy Haslam. Brown will serve as a “special
adviser,” focusing on community work, interacting with fans and helping mentor players.
Haslam called Brown’s return a “very special and significant day in Cleveland Browns
history.” Brown’s homecoming has been in
the planning stages for months, and after a few
meetings with Brown, Haslam was pleased to
bring back “the greatest Brown of all.”
“He’s not only the most famous Cleveland
Brown of all time and best player that’s ever
played here,” Haslam said. “One of the reasons
the Browns remain so popular is when a lot of
us were growing up, they followed 32 and he
was their hero. So to have 32 back on our team
and working with us and being part of not just
the Browns but the Cleveland community is tremendously important.”
Brown, who retired in 1965 at the peak of his
playing career to become an actor, is thrilled to
be again working for the Browns, his pro football family and the team he helped lead to its
last championship in 1964. The years he was
disconnected were difficult, but Brown, who
was accompanied to the news conference at
FirstEnergy Stadium by his wife, Monique, said
the Haslam family’s desire to bring him back
soothed any hard feelings he may have had.
“I’ve been through many ups and downs
here,” Brown said. “I like the new ownership.
I respect the new ownership. I will stand by the
new ownership come hell or high water, and I
will be doing everything in my power to help
the Cleveland Browns be successful.”
Brown said being away from the beloved
brown and orange was tough.
“Nothing’s changed except I was off the
payroll and out of town and it was not a good
feeling because I’m used to being around,” he
said. “I have no animosity, I have no thoughts

Cincinnati Bengals linebackers James Harrison (92) and Rey Maualuga talk during NFL foot(AP Photo/Al Behrman)
ball practice, Wednesday, May 29, 2013, in Cincinnati. Bengals CB ‘Pacman’
Jones finally settles in
CINCINNATI (AP) — Adam “Pacman”
Jones is finally in a comfortable place, playing
up to expectations after years of digging his
career out from another mess.
And he’s thinking big for whatever time he
has left.
The cornerback has developed into a regular
with the Cincinnati Bengals, who gave him a
final chance after years of off-field problems
and missed opportunities. He’s an important
part of a defense that finished sixth last season
in yards allowed.
The 29-year-old cornerback has not only
revived his career after a year out of football,
he’s starting to embellish it.
“And the story ain’t written all the way yet,”
Jones said on Wednesday following one of the
team’s offseason workouts. “So we’ll see.”
His story was mostly a bad drama after Tennessee took him with the sixth overall pick in
2005. He repeatedly got in trouble off the field,
resulting in repeated suspensions. He missed
the entire 2007 season on suspension and sat
out the 2009 season when no NFL team was
interested.
The Bengals gave him a final chance, and
he has taken advantage of it. Jones started five
games last season and played in all of them. He
also returned punts, running one back 81 yards
against the Browns for his first touchdown since
2003.
He’s found a home.
“It’s been great,” Jones said. “I’ve got a lot
of guys in the locker room that I can trust. The
people upstairs (in the front office) have been
great. With the injuries I’ve had, they’ve had
me stick around.”
In addition to signing him for the 2010
season, they stuck with him after he damaged
a disc in his neck and missed nearly a year. He
also missed time with a hamstring injury.
He has played in 29 games overall with the
Bengals, starting 13 of them.
Coach Marvin Lewis said one of the biggest changes in Jones has been the way he now
studies the game. He understands defensive
coordinator Mike Zimmer’s methods better,
allowing him to be in the right spot and do the
right thing.
“Really, before I got here I just relied on
straight athleticism and ability,” Jones said.
“With Zim, you have to know what you’re
going to get out of certain formations, know
when you are getting the ball toward your way,
know what different offenses are trying to
attack when we’re in certain calls.”
Jones would love to get deep into the playoffs — the Bengals have lost to Houston in
the first round each of the last two seasons. He
thinks Cincinnati’s defense, which added linebacker James Harrison in the offseason, is good
enough to do it.
“We have a good group,” he said. “If we can
keep everybody healthy, we should have a good
run at it.”
Harrison, who left the rival Steelers after
they failed to agree on a restructured contract,
has been learning the defense a little more each
day during two weeks of OTA workouts. Harrison said the switch from Pittsburgh’s 3-4
alignment to Cincinnati’s 4-3 hasn’t been much
of an adjustment. He expects to have a little different role, however.
“I think I’ll be covering a little less here,”
Harrison said on Wednesday. “I believe they’ll
have me rushing (the passer) a little more than I
have been in Pittsburgh the previous few years.”
Lewis thinks the switch is going smoothly
for Harrison.
“I’ve watched James since he’s been in the
league,” said Lewis, a former assistant coach
in Pittsburgh. “Each week we’re playing the
common opponents and so forth. So he’s a great
fit and an easy fit to plug and play with what
we’re doing.
“A lot of our principles are identical to what
he learned as a player in Pittsburgh, some things
that I have transferred through the years. So it’s
been a pretty easy transition for him. And as he
keeps going, we keep having an opportunity to
expand on his skills and his ability in what we
do defensively.”

OC settles over Marine shot
by deputy for $4.4 million
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — The family of an unarmed
Marine who was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy at San Clemente High School is entitled to a $4.4 million settlement, Orange
County officials announced Wednesday
County supervisors voted last month to authorize attorneys to
settle the federal lawsuit with the family of Sgt. Manuel Levi Loggins Jr., county spokesman Howard Sutter told City News Service.
Loggins, 31, was known to take his daughters to San Clemente
High School early in the morning for workouts. Loggins was in his
SUV with his two daughters when Deputy Darren Sandberg said
he crashed through a parking lot gate on Feb. 7, 2012.
Sandberg said he saw Loggins burst through the gate from
where he was parked nearby, doing paperwork in his patrol car.
Sandberg said he ordered Loggins out of the car, but Loggins
didn’t comply with commands before the deputy shot and killed
him. Sandberg was later exonerated by county prosecutors, who
found the shooting justified.
Loggins’ family disagreed with that finding, and his widow
filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
“It’s just a tragedy and there isn’t anyone involved who
wouldn’t agree,” said Orange County Board Chairman Shawn
Nelson when supervisors voted to pursue the settlement.
Teen convicted of killing
of girlfriend’s parents
LOS ANGELES (AP) — An 18-year-old has been convicted
of murdering his girlfriend’s mother and stepfather in their
Compton mobile home and now faces a possible life sentence,
prosecutors said Wednesday. A Compton Superior Court jury
found Giovanni Gallardo, 18, guilty of two counts of murder
after about 90 minutes of deliberations Wednesday.
Gloria Villalta and Jose Lara were killed in 2011. Gallardo
was 16 at the time, and his girlfriend, Cynthia Alvarez, was 15.
The two have been convicted of plotting to kill her parents in a
sneak attack, killing them in an ambush.
Alvarez, who was convicted by a separate jury in the murders, has testified that she and Gallardo stole the victims’ jewelry and truck parts to fund a Halloween party.
The two went to a party supply store with her dead mother’s
body in the back of the car. The decomposing bodies were found
buried in shallow graves days after their killings.
Defense attorney Scott T. Johnson called a psychiatrist to testify on Tuesday that Gallardo’s IQ was determined to be 57 after
the killings — a number consistent with mental disability.
Following the verdict’s reading, prosecutor Eric Siddall said
he didn’t believe the test reflected Gallardo’s true capabilities.
“Does he know how to kill someone and try to get away with
it? Absolutely,” Siddall said.
Alvarez faces 51 years to life at sentencing on June 21.
Group wants civil rights
probe into Todashev death
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — An advocacy group is demanding
a civil rights investigation into the death of a Chechen immigrant who was shot to death by authorities in central Florida
while being questioned about his ties to one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
A spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations
said Wednesday his group is asking the U.S. Department of Justice’s civil rights division to open a probe into how 27-yearold Ibragim Todashev died last week. CAIR spokesman Hassan
Shibly says he wants to know if excessive force was used or
whether Todashev’s rights were violated.
The FBI says Todashev was killed during a violent confrontation while he was being questioned by an FBI agent and two
Massachusetts state troopers about his ties to slain Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as well as about a
2011 triple slaying in Massachusetts.
The medical examiner has ruled the death a homicide.
Freeport Indonesia resumes
mine work after 28 deaths
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — PT Freeport Indonesia has
resumed mining operations at the giant U.S.-owned gold and
copper mine where a tunnel collapse killed 28 workers two weeks
ago. A company statement issued late Wednesday said activities have restarted gradually since Tuesday. Inspectors from the
Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources have completed their
initial investigation and made recommendations to the mine.
The roof of a tunnel inside the Big Gossan facility collapsed
May 14 while workers were undergoing safety training in an
underground classroom. Ten were rescued.
Operations at the Grasberg mine, owned by Phoenix, Arizona-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., were suspended to respect the victims and recover their bodies.
More than 20,000 workers are employed at the mine in the
resource-rich but impoverished area in Papua province.

Croc kills Indonesian fishing for
crabs in river
KUPANG, Indonesia (AP)
— A saltwater crocodile has
killed a man in an Indonesian river near villages where
people have reported livestock
losses in recent weeks. Police
spokesman Lt. Yoseph Marsudi
said Thursday that the crocodile apparently sprang from the
water and pulled 51-year-old
Zam Ledoh under as the farmer
searched for crabs.
It happened Tuesday in the
Amabi river in Kupang district
of East Nusatenggara province.
The man’s mangled body was
found downriver the next day.
Villagers
have
asked
authorities to do more to protect them from crocodiles and
want this one to be hunted and
killed. Marsudi said the river
is home to some 20 saltwater
crocodiles but attacks against
humans are rare. A crocodile
killed another farmer in the
same river in January, and villagers killed it days later.
Japan mayor faces
censure over sex

TOKYO (AP) — The
mayor of the Japanese city
of Osaka is facing a censure
motion over inflammatory
comments he made about
Japan’s wartime sex slaves,
remarks that sparked an international uproar.
The city assembly will
vote Thursday afternoon on
the motion, which says Mayor
Toru Hashimoto’s comments
created confusion and tarnished the image of the city.
The motion has no legal
implication for Hashimoto,
who is also co-chair of an
emerging nationalistic party.
The outspoken mayor
sparked a firestorm of controversy after he said on May 13
that Japan’s use of so-called
“comfort women” before and
during World War II was necessary for military discipline
and providing rest for troops.
He sought later to clarify
his comments, saying he meant
that military authorities of the
day must have deemed the
practice necessary.

Panda Express
settles Hawaii sex
harassment suit
HONOLULU (AP) — A Chinese fast-food chain is paying
$150,000 to settle a federal lawsuit claiming sexual harassment
at a Hawaii restaurant, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Wednesday.
Panda Express is settling a lawsuit alleging a male supervisor at the Kauai eatery sexually harassed at least three female
employees who were 17 to 19 years old at the time. The alleged
harassment occurred in the tourist town of Kapaa between
2007 and 2009, the EEOC said.
The women were subjected to “unwelcome physical and
verbal sexual conduct that was sufficiently severe and pervasive to adversely affect the terms and conditions of the
employment and create a hostile work environment,” claimed
the lawsuit filed in September.
One teen who reported the harassment had her hours cut
and was forced to resign, the commission said, and another
teen quit to avoid verbal obscenities and sexual advances.
The case highlights how vulnerable teens who are new
to the workforce can be, said Timothy Riera, director of the
EEOC’s Honolulu office.
For some of the women, it was their first job and they didn’t
know where to turn, said Amrita Mallik, the office’s senior
trial attorney.
She said they went to the police, before an aunt of one of the
women told them about the EEOC.
Shaleah Rodero-Workman’s aunt told her to contact the
EEOC. The then-17-year-old was working as a cook and felt
powerless.
“It was difficult. I was so young,” Rodero-Workman, now
22, said. “I didn’t know what was going on.”
The experience, she said, has made her stronger.
The money will be split between the three women.
The settlement also includes a two-year consent decree
that requires Panda Express to implement anti-harassment
measures including annual sexual harassment training for all
employees on Kauai and for all general managers in the state.
The company strives to provide a safe and empowering
environment for all associates, said Thien Ho, a spokeswoman
for Rosemead, Calif.-based Panda Restaurant Group, Inc.
“In today’s settlement with the EEOC, we reconfirm our
shared mission with the EEOC to ensure that our associates
continue to be protected and cared for,” she said in a statement.
“We appreciate the partnership of all those involved in this
isolated incident to find resolution with dignity and common
value in mind.”
Mallik said the company should be commended for agreeing
to an early settlement and taking steps to address the problem.
“They’re really showing a real responsibility to the workers in
Hawaii,” she said.
The company manages and owns nearly 1,600 restaurants
in 42 states.
The women are no longer working for Panda Express. The
supervisor was terminated shortly after the EEOC’s investigation, but Mallik did not know the reason.

James fouled out for only the fifth time in his career, though
Miami was clearly miffed at some late-game calls. Bosh went 1
for 6 with only three rebounds.
Wade, that aching right knee still apparently an issue, missed
10 of his 15 shots. And despite it all, the Heat still had the lead
in the final minutes.
“We missed an opportunity to go up 3-1,” Bosh said. “But we
did get home-court back. We did our job. We have to come out
and play with a lot of passion.”
Wade, who’s averaging an uncharacteristically low 13.4
points in his last 10 games, was more succinct: “Our whole team
has to do more,” he said.
Being in a 2-2 series isn’t the right time for Heat panic over
now being in what amounts to a best-of-three, or Heat lament
over anything that isn’t going their way, Spoelstra said.
At one point Wednesday, he took his left fist and right fist,
banged them together to make a point, and insisted that the series
will simply be won by the team that does enough to deserve a
chance at facing the Spurs for the title.
“Our guys have respect for the other team in that locker
room,” Spoelstra said.
“We know nothing is earned easy in this series. We’ve got to
work for it. Being home doesn’t guarantee anything.”

camp in a tent in a valley. They haven’t been
heard from since, said Capt. Richard Miyamoto.
The family contacted Hawaii County police
early Wednesday and informed them about the
disturbing call claiming to have Butler.
“We don’t know what they really meant,”
Miyamoto said of the person who called the
relative. “That’s why the family became concerned.” It sounded like a man’s voice, Miyamoto said.
Other than the Kona hotel, relatives don’t
know where on the Big Island the couple
planned to go. They happened to call the
Honokaa station, which is handling the missing
person investigation, Miyamoto said.
“We don’t have a particular area we can
search,” he said. The island is nearly twice as
big as the other Hawaiian islands combined.
“Maybe someone has seen them or knows of
them,” Miyamoto said. “With that information,
we will work from there.”
When reached by The Associated Press,
Linder’s brother, Daniel Linder, said family
members were too distraught to comment.
Butler is described as 6 feet tall, 175 pounds
with short brown hair and hazel eyes. He has a
scar on his shoulder.
Linder is described as 5 feet, 4 inches tall
and 130 pounds with brown hair and green
eyes. She has a tattoo on her right foot that says,
“Walking with God.”
Anyone with information on their whereabouts can call the police department at
808-935-3311.
Second person dies in
Big Island accident
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — A second
person has died of injuries sustained in an accident on the Big Island.
Police say 24-year-old Michelle Deluz of
Waikoloa and 24-year-old Gary Fergerstrom of
Kailua-Kona were killed.
The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on
the west side of the island.
Deluz was driving on Queen Kaahumanu
Highway when their small sedan crossed the
centerline and went off the roadway, coming to
a stop in a lava field. Police say they were not
wearing seat belts and were thrown from the car
near Kiholo Bay in North Kona.
Two men also were injured in a second accident on Tuesday. They were taken to North
Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition after the head-on crash in south Kohala.
4 teens safe after being
swept into Kalihi Stream
HONOLULU (AP) — The Honolulu Fire
Department says four teenagers were treated at
a hospital after getting caught in rising stream
waters in the Kalihi Valley.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the
four Pearl City high school students were part
of a group who went for a swim yesterday
morning at Naohia Falls.
Capt. Terry Seelig says the four teens got
swept downstream while trying to cross the
stream but managed to catch themselves on
some rocks.
Authorities say their injuries consisted
mostly of scrapes and bruises.
The National Weather Service had posted a
flash flood warning for Oahu yesterday.
Hawaii to get $570,000 to
help homeless veterans
HONOLULU (AP) — About $570,000 in
federal funding is heading to Hawaii to help
veterans who are struggling with homelessness.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
and U.S. Housing and Urban Development
announced Wednesday that they will give
$60 million to local public housing agencies
nationwide.
The money will fund permanent housing
for about 9,000 homeless veterans across the
nation.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa
of Hawaii says the country has an obligation
to support veterans who are transitioning to
civilian life.
She says it is a tragedy to see military service
members become homeless after returning from
war.
The U.S. Housing and Urban Development
says homelessness among veterans dropped
by 17.2 percent between 2009 and 2012. The
agency says more funding is expected to be
announced this summer.
Big Island man gets 20
years in meth dealing case
HONOLULU (AP) — A federal judge
is sentencing a Big Island man to 20 years in
prison for conspiring to deal methamphetamine.
U.S. District Court Judge Michael Seabright
on Tuesday fined Michael Sakuma $20,000.
The U.S. Attorney for Hawaii says Sakuma
admitted in court to possessing more than seven
and a half pounds of methamphetamine that
he planned to distribute on the Big Island. The
50-year-old pleaded guilty in January.
Prosecutors say Hawaii County police
executing search warrants found the methamphetamine in two safes hidden behind wooden
shelves at a Kailua-Kona warehouse. Hawaii
County police and Drug Enforcement Administration agents investigated the case.
New law lifts permitting
rules for hawaii harbors
HONOLULU (AP) — Lawmakers say a
new Hawaii law could help the state develop
commercial harbors faster and more efficiently.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a bill last
week to allow the state Department of Transportation to sidestep conservation district permitting requirements when working on underwater areas of state commercial harbors.
Senate and House negotiators say permits
can create unnecessary delays. They say efficiency is important because 98 percent of
Hawaii’s imported goods pass through harbors.
But the Office of Hawaiian Affairs opposes
the measure and says the law could endanger
Hawaii’s natural resources. The agency says
affected areas may include “ceded” lands that
belong to Native Hawaiians.
The state Department of Transportation says
there is already enough oversight to ensure that
the environment will be protected.
Body found floating in
ocean off windward Oahu
KANEOHE, Hawaii (AP) — A body has
been found in the ocean off windward Oahu.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry
Seelig says firefighters on personal watercraft
recovered the man’s body Wednesday morning
after being alerted by police and the emergency
services department.
The body was about a quarter-mile from the
coastline of Waiahole Valley.
Seelig says local fishermen first spotted the
body and notified police.
The body has been turned over to the medical
examiner’s office for an autopsy. The medical
examiner’s office didn’t have any information
about the man’s identity.

TRIED AND TRUE By Monnie Wayne
Happy Birthday: Try something new. Look
at job prospects in your field and consider how you
can use your skills to suit the current economic climate. Your unique vision and way of presenting
what you have to offer will attract the attention of
someone with future plans who can use what you
have to offer. Love is on the rise. Your numbers are
9, 16, 25, 33, 36, 40, 45.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Take the initiative, make the first move and befriend someone.
Showing an effort will bring you one step closer
to a workable solution and a lifelong connection.
Making a couple of physical changes will result in
more confidence as well as compliments. ✸✸✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don’t feel limited by
what others do or say. Embrace what you want and
push until you reach your destination. Someone
from your past will have something to offer, but
make sure you know what’s expected in return
before making a commitment. ✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Make your move
and do something worthwhile. Use your charm,
knowledge and experience to compete against
someone who hasn’t been fair or honest with you
in the past. You can and will make a difference.
Pursue love and romance. ✸✸✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Get out and mingle
with people you can discuss ideas with. Sharing
and interacting will open doors to new possibilities.
A serious attitude coupled with an unusual idea will
capture attention. Someone from a different background will contribute sound advice. ✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Giving back or offering
assistance to a cause you believe in will enhance
your reputation and popularity. A change in location
or the way you think will bring about an interest in
trying something unique and different. Share emotional, physical and mental pursuits. ✸✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Don’t give in to
emotional blackmail or someone trying to outmaneuver you at work. Be ready to counter any attack
you face with facts and formulas. Preparation is
the name of the game. Play to win. ✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don’t wait for things
to come to you. Spring into action and follow your
heart and your dreams and wishes. Use your intelligence and sophistication to dazzle whomever you
meet along the way, and you will get whatever support you need. ✸✸✸✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Don’t take
chances. Financial, legal or medical problems are
likely if you don’t take precautions. Protect your
assets and rely on your intuition to guide you.
Change can be good, but only if it is implemented
in a timely fashion. ✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Participate in
activities that allow you to show off. Your ability to
charm and encourage others will help you make
new connections that can be of use to you. Alterations made to the way you live will enhance an
important relationship. ✸✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Stick to your
own ideas and plans. As soon as you let too many
people get involved, you will lose control. Leave
time to engage in some stress-relieving physical
activity. Look after your needs first and be sure to
include pampering. ✸✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Get out and
have some fun. Try something new or experience
different cultures. Make some personal alterations
that will enhance your appearance as well as your
relationship with someone special. Love is on the
rise. ✸✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Problems at home
will escalate if you are excessive or difficult to get
along with. Be willing to compromise, but don’t let
anyone take advantage of you, either. Honesty and
integrity will be a must if you want to avoid opposition. ✸✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are unique, popular
and pioneering. You are positive, outgoing and
intelligent.
Dear Abby

FRIEND KEEPING CONFIDENCES FEELS HE’S ABOUT TO CRACK
DEAR ABBY: I am friendly with a married couple.
The husband, “Grant,” is my best friend and we
talk about everything. His wife, “Sharon,” and I are
equally close. Their wedding date was last summer.
I have known for a while that Grant didn’t want
to get married. He did it to please everyone around
him. Sharon, however, was elated. He hoped that
after the wedding his feelings would change. Now
they have been married for nine months Grant tells
me he can’t continue on, that he is unhappy and
no longer wants to be married. I have begged and
pleaded with him to level with Sharon. He keeps
making excuses about why he hasn’t told her yet.
He says he’ll do it -- but each day he moves the
discussion further and further back. When I talk with
her, she tells me she has the feeling he doesn’t want
to be married anymore.
Please help. This is stressing me out. I want to
let Grant tell her, but I feel I should say something
because he hasn’t. At the same time, I don’t want
to have anyone mad at me. What should I do? -CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE
DEAR CAUGHT: Step back and keep your mouth
shut. You are in a no-win situation.
It is Grant’s job to find the courage to tell his wife
he made a mistake by marrying her. While it may be
painful for her to hear, it probably won’t come as a
shock, from what she’s telling you. You help neither
of them by letting them discuss their marital problems with you instead of with each other. So do them
both a favor and remove yourself from the middle.

What’s your best advice for young adults dealing
with crippling mental illness? How can we live our
lives without fear of being rejected or shunned for
our illness? -- FRUSTRATED IN WASHINGTON
DEAR FRUSTRATED: There is still ignorance,
stigma and fear about mental illness mostly because
it is misunderstood.
However, 50 percent of adults will have a diagnosable mental illness at some time in their lives -including the ones you have.
I discussed your letter with Dr. David Baron, psychiatrist in chief at the University of Southern California hospital. He suggested that I stress to you the
importance of finding a mental health professional
you can trust and confide in, and have another thorough evaluation done.
In recent years newer drugs and therapies are
being used which may help you, so you shouldn’t
give up. In a case like yours, a combination of medication and talk therapy can be helpful.
