WHL
Tigers future in doubt
MEDICINE HAT, Alta. (CP) —
The commissioner of the Western
Hockey League says the failure of
the City of Medicine Hat to fund
a new arena is surprising and disappointing.
Ron Robison says the Tigers
are the only WHL franchise to
have an arena that doesn’t meets
league standards.
He says the construction of a
new arena and event centre is
necessary for the Tigers’ future in
Medicine Hat.
Robison says a meeting between hockey officials and the
city is being scheduled immediately.
In 2004, WHL updated its arena standards and Medicine Hat is
the only city to not meet the requirements.
MLB
Selig’s motives
questioned
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig
hasn’t acted in good faith by rejecting a proposed television deal
involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and appeared determined
to run Frank McCourt out of the
sport, a lawyer representing the
embattled owner said Tuesday.
A day after Selig announced he
wouldn’t approve a Dodgers TV
deal with Fox Sports – reportedly
worth up to US$3 billion – lawyer Robert Sacks questioned the
commissioner’s intentions and
warned that any potential takeover of the team by Major League
Baseball would be met with resistance.
“There seems to be a predetermined result to drive Frank out of
baseball without a good faith basis,” Sacks said. “This isn’t going
to go away quietly.”
McCourt hoped Selig would
sign off on the transaction that
would have provided him with
$385 million up front and was
vital to a binding settlement
reached between him and his exwife and former Dodger CEO Jamie McCourt last week. McCourt
now faces the potential of missing a June 30 team payroll without the TV funds and that could
lead to a MLB takeover.
Rob Manfred, MLB’s executive
vice-president of labour relations, wouldn’t say what Selig’s
next move would be, but noted
the league has treated McCourt
fairly and wasn’t interested in
seeing him take on further debt
or pull future revenues to be used
for non-baseball expenses.
NFL
Super Bowl snubbed
want lost wages
DALLAS (AP) — Super Bowl
ticket-holders displaced during
the seating fiasco at Cowboys
Stadium in February said Tuesday in a court filing they should
be compensated for lost income
on top of the other expenses they
incurred.
Ticket holders who lost their
seats or had obstructed views “at
a very minimum” should be paid
for lost income suffered as a result of travelling to suburban Arlington, according to a document
filed in response to a motion by
the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL
seeking to dismiss the class action lawsuit.
The lawsuit was filed after
1,250 temporary seats were declared unsafe just hours before
the game between the Green Bay
Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It says 475 ticket holders were
forced to watch from standingroom locations while others were
relocated, causing them to miss
part of the game won by Green
Bay.

Thousands of children in Prince George will
have the opportunity to fine-tune their soccer
skills over the next two months.
Summer Soccer Development Camps will be
held in July and August for seven- to 12-yearold children at the Rotary Fields on Ospika
Boulevard.
New technical director Joel MacDonald has
revamped the programs a bit, said Linda Herman, executive director at the PGSYA.
“The younger children will work on skills but
definitely the focus is on having fun and introducing them to the game of soccer, whereas
for the older children it will be a little bit more
about skill development,” Herman said.
There are four sessions available and the
children are divided into two age categories,
seven to nine and 10 to 12 years.
“There will be a little competition – we call it
the World Cup – and that’s on the Thursday of
each camp,” said Herman.
Fridays are pizza lunch day.
The camps are Monday to Friday
from 9 a.m. to noon.
MacDonald will be running three of the four
camps and Sonny Pawar, who is the men’s
coach at UNBC, will run the other, Herman
said.
Each registrant will receive a T-shirt and the
cost for the camp is $150 per child, if a sibling
also registers it’s $135 for that child.

Japan’s team is coming to
Prince George’s World Baseball Challenge with industrialgrade credentials and a heavy
duty contingent to match.
Toshiba, named for electronic and semiconductor manufacturing giant, will be among
the top international squads
appearing at the Citizen Field
tournament July 7 to 19. The
club captured its sixth National Inter-City Championship in
2010.
It is based in Kawasaki, Japan.
The team will feature a
hefty, 39-strong contingent of
players, coaches and support
staff. They will be joined by a
senior Toshiba executive, assorted Toshiba staff, and a pair
of Japanese journalists.
In other WBC news, Team
Canada invited three players
to join its ranks recently. The
2010 Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League MVP Joel Irvine,
league home run and RBI leader Darren Doucette and 2008
league MVP Chris Head have
been tabbed for the squad.
Doucette appeared in the
first tournament in 2009. All
three players play for the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry.
Team Canada’s full roster is
expected to be released this
weekend.
