MISSION
The YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard is dedicated to
improving the quality of life for children, individuals,
families and the Island community by helping our
members realize their fullest potential through the
development of body, mind and spirit.
COMMUNITY IMPACT PROMISE
The YMCA of Martha's Vineyard will be a community leader
that promotes healthy living for all, fosters collaboration, and
demonstrates social responsibility.
DEAR COLLEAGUES:
In a short period of time, the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard has
truly become the center of our Island community. We have
learned that lasting personal and social change occurs when we
collaborate to invest in our children, our health and our neighbors.
While many social service organizations care for people once they
are in crisis, the Y offers programs that focus on prevention and
healthy living. We work side by side with individuals and other
organizations to provide everyone, regardless of age, ability,
financial circumstances or background, the opportunity to learn,
grow and thrive. In just under two years of operations, the Y has
grown a membership base of over 4,000 individuals (over 5,000
in the summer season), and over $220,000 has been awarded in
scholarship assistance and community outreach. To date, no one
who has applied for financial assistance has been turned away.
LETTER FROM
THE BOARD
PRESIDENT AND
AND EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR/CEO
With the opening of the brand new Alexandra Gagnon Teen Center
in January 2012, all Island teens will now have a permanent place
to call their own. It is important now more than ever to keep the
doors open to our teens that provide a safe home away from
home, and to sustain its programs and services that inspire,
motivate and educate.
To further strengthen our community, we continue to collaborate
with other island organizations and all island schools as much as
possible by providing access to our programs, services and facility. It is these relationships that position our organization as a
leading provider of services that strengthen our Island community.
And for our great success, we have you to thank. Whether you
read this as a member, a donor, a volunteer, a staff member, or a
community supporter, it all began with you. And look how far
we’ve come!
Our sincerest thanks!

THE HEART
OF OUR
COMMUNITY
LIVING OUR CAUSE
The impact our organization has had on island life
is unprecedented. Our 40,000 square foot facility
which houses a healthy Café, aquatic center, wellness
center, Teen Center, and outdoor field, playground and
basketball court, is the community's largest fitness
facility and provides the only community pool. Our
fitness programs are offered at little or no additional
cost to members. In addition to our Afterschool and
Summer Camp Programs, our organization provides
the community’s only Teen Center, Learn-to-Swim
Programs, and Child Watch Center (offering child
care for children under 10 while parents use the
facility). We work with over 30 Island organizations,
including the public and charter school systems, to
provide essential programs and services to all
members of our community. We are also committed
to serving materially disadvantaged individuals
through reduced membership and program fees and
financial assistance.

Y MEMBERSHIP AND PROGRAMS FOR ALL
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
We believe no one should be denied membership or
program participation due to financial circumstances.
Financial assistance is made possible through charitable
donations to our scholarship fund, and is granted based
on the need demonstrated by household income and/or
extenuating circumstances. Each application is reviewed
on an individual basis; scholarship is awarded as a
percent off total membership or program cost.
Since opening the facility in June 2010, nearly $150,000 has been awarded in financial assistance alone.

In 2012, the Y’s Strategic Planning Committee
will finalize a road map created by the Board of
Directors and staff members that directs the
future steps of the organization in order to
achieve our goals and best meet the needs of our
community.

We will be operationally sustainable, thus
making membership and quality programs
affordable to meet the evolving needs of the
Island community.

We will be the Island’s “community center”
serving people of all ages with emphasis on the
underserved populations.

We will collaborate with other organizations
and individuals to best serve our Vineyard
YMCA of MARTHA’S VINEYARD
A STORY OF IMPACT
We have numbers and statistics to quantify our impact, and they’re impressive. But even more
compelling is the narrative: the stories of people whose lives have been changed by the Y.
I have been interested in fitness activities my whole life, especially
swimming. Swimming with the Masters group has not only been
instrumental in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but gave me the
opportunity to be coached and be a member of a competitive team.
The Y staff has been nothing but upbeat, friendly, and courteous.
I have had only good experiences. The topper is that I have met so
many great people and developed new friendships.
Liz Fox, Senior member for 2 years, Masters Swim participant
I joined the Y because it gave me the opportunity to work out with
childcare provided. Fitness has always been a part of my life but after
having two kids I was unable to go to a gym… until the Y opened. The Y
has most definitely changed my life and that of my kids as well. Working
out here is a most amazing experience. The Y has changed my life and
has made a major impact on my entire family, and I am so grateful!
Amy Crawford, Family membership since opening in 2010
The Teen Center opened me up to the world of music in a way I never
would have experienced without the staff's help. Tony helped me get
my songs famous across the Island and booked me to open up for
world-famous artists at the Stars + Stripes Festival. Not only did
the Teen Center give me a place to create music, but it also
gave me a place to be myself, with people who cared about me
and I could talk to about anything.
Marcus Adams, Teen Center participant, Stars + Stripes festival opener
Our new Special Olympics program started with a reverberating
response from our community. Parents and caregivers are thankful
to have a program that gives athletes freedom of movement and
confidence. The program is great because the athletes can be
autonomous in the water, instilling independence and freedom,
and providing rare free time for their parents and caregivers.
Robin Tuck, Special Olympics volunteer coach and parent

OUR STRENGTH
As a new YMCA, we have demonstrated success in our first
two years of operations by successfully maintaining a balanced
budget. With the facility open, our goal now focuses on
maintaining sustainable operations by meeting our annual
fundraising needs and retiring our capital debt. Our volunteer-led
annual fundraising efforts include support from staff, board and
the community.
STATEMENT OF NEED
OUR
STRENGTH
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
General Operating
Contributed support is one of the essential elements that help
create and sustain the unique character of the Y. We rely heavily
on contributions to keep our programs affordable for all who may
not be able to pay for these services. In order to continue our
success and sustain our scholarship and community outreach
program, we must fundraise almost $700,000, or 20% of our
total annual operational costs.
Capital and Debt Reduction
With a friendly and courteous staff, a new state of the art facility
and an enthusiastic membership, things could hardly be off to a
better start. But, as you know, we began construction before
completing our total fundraising requirements in order to take
advantage of the weak economic environment at that time. In
addition, we received a very generous offer by Geoff and Nancy
Caraboolad, and Metric Construction to construct the building at
cost, donating approximately $1.2 million of overhead and profit.
As a result, we opened the facility with a $3 million mortgage,
and as of May 1, 2012, $2.1 million of that debt remains. In
order to avoid adding significant interest costs to our annual
operations, we would like to eliminate our capital debt as soon as
possible. This will allows us to remain an efficient sustainable
organization.
Tower Family Fund Inc. (TFFI) Endowment Challenge
We currently have an endowment fund of $200,000. The TFFI
challenged the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard with a very generous
gift and matching incentive. When we raise an additional
$3 million for our Endowment Fund, TFFI will forgive the
$1.5 million capital loan they have made to the Y. We would like
to raise the $3 million by the end of 2012 in order to save the
additional interest expense and to build sustainability for the
future.

OUR
THANKS
Behind every success like this there are numerous folks
to thank – including our volunteer Board of Directors
who have been active in many aspects of the project.
There are contractors too numerous to name, who have
given their time and talent to building this wonderful
facility. Private citizens have given countless hours
of time and materials to help support not only the
construction, but the maintenance of this new facility
and the programs within.
In 2011, a volunteer Advisory Board was assembled,
comprised of a number of influential residents of the
Vineyard who meet during the year to listen to
management and advise them and the Directors on a
wide range of topics.
There are many individuals and organizations that have
been proactive in their support with their dollars, but
also with their expertise and counsel – specifically,
John and Charlotte Klein, Jim and Susan Swartz, and the
Gagnon and the Doyle families – without them all of this
would never have happened.
We cannot thanks these parties enough, along with our
thousands of private donors and business sponsors,
for the time and efforts they have put in to making our
organization what it is today.
As we raised our family in Princeton, NJ, the local YMCA played an
integral role in developing swimming and social skills for our three
children. After studying the data and understanding the community needs
of the Island, we became convinced that the community sorely needed a
community center - one that supports all age groups and encourages
physical and emotional development, particularly during the off season.
It is the single best investment in the social welfare of the Island.
There are endless programs that support all needs and all ages, and
that engender community based self-actuation.
Jim and Susan Swartz, Founding donors and Charter Members
