My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!
In announcing this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, “Here, then, is the reason
for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favorable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of
meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer
everyone, everyone, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation. May the Mother of God open our eyes, so that we may
comprehend the task to which we have been called; and may she obtain for us the grace to experience this Jubilee of
Mercy as faithful and fruitful witnesses of Christ.”
So to live mercy, Pope Francis continues, we must rediscover both the spiritual works of mercy and the
corporal works of mercy. Today, here, let me just highlight the spiritual works of mercy. Which spiritual works of
mercy might Jesus be calling you to practice?
The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of
theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritual well-being of those he
ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to “help our neighbor in their spiritual needs.”
Counseling the doubtful: Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith journey. Nevertheless, we should
always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way. The Book of Proverbs
says, “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may eventually become wise” (Prov 19:20). Has someone
asked you for advice? Orient your response to Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Instructing the ignorant: Learn about our faith and be open to talking with others about our beliefs. There is
always something more to discover about our faith. Volunteer to help with faith formation. Invite someone to go to
Mass with you this weekend. Know your faith! Look up topics of interest to you in the Catechism of the Catholic
Church, and share them!
Admonishing the sinner: Jesus says, do not judge, but guide others towards the path of salvation
(see Mt 7:1-2); be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to
walk more closely with Christ, encouraging and practicing the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In humility we must strive
to create a culture that does not accept sin, while realizing that we all fall at times. We are all in need of God's loving
correction. “Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your
brother's eye” (Mt 7:5).
Comforting the sorrowful and afflicted: Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with
grief. Even if we aren't sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference. Lend a listening ear to
those going through a tough time. Write a letter or send a card to someone who is suffering.
Forgiving injuries and offenses: Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God’s limitless
mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show
others the mercy of God. Let go of grudges. Saying sorry is something we learn as kids, but how often do we really
mean it? Forgiveness transforms hearts and lives.
Bearing wrongs patiently: Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that
you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit. Frustrated with someone? Step
away from the situation, take a few deep breaths, pray the Our Father, asking God for patience.
Praying for the living and the dead: Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining
together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God's care. Request a Mass intention for a friend or
family member who is going through a tough time. Request a Mass intention for a friend or family member who has
passed away. Ask a friend or family member if there is anything you can pray for them about. Keep your own book of
prayer intentions, writing down the names of those who you are keeping in your prayers.
Through prayer, entrust your cares and concerns for those around you to God.
Pope Francis concludes so beautifully that Mercy is “the beating heart of the Gospel.”
Let our hearts beat to the rhythm of the Gospel of Mercy! Which spiritual works of mercy
might Jesus be calling you to practice?
In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Fr. Gregor

It is the father in the parable who models for us the mercy of our heavenly Father. The prodigal son repented
and returned to his father. As what happened in this parable our heavenly Father will welcome us back to him warmly.
We pray, “Here I am, Father. Let me know your mercy today.”
If you or someone you know is in need of temporary assistance please call our helpline.

Nonetheless, congratulations to the

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT
SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION
CATECHUMENATE
The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those
adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight
into the Christian faith.
BAPTISM OF CHILDREN
We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian
households which are joined to our weekly worship, and
have active registration in our parish community for at least
3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an
Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in
the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date.
Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month
at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the
third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION
Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord
as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith
Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year
process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith
Formation Office for more information.

Look upon our brothers and sisters who are ill, in the midst of
illness and pain, may they be united with Christ, who heals both
body and soul; may they know the consolation promised to
those who suffer and be fully restored to wellness and
wholeness. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

MARRIAGE
Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for
the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our
short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you
are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital
ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.
Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer,
reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider
and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that
this six month period of preparation is essential.
