DISTORTING A PHOTOGRAPH
Why? How?
What is distortion?
Abnormality in an image
What is the appeal of distortion?
Can a distorted image change the message conveyed?
If so how is its message altered?
Is it compositional?
ie is it purely structural?
or is it also conceptual?
ie does it trigger the mind to imagine to consider ideas?
Perhaps it does both these things?
What is lens distortion?
Lens distortion is the tendency of a lens
to bend straight lines…
Barrel distortion is often measured as the amount a reference line is bent as a percentage of
picture height. For most consumer digital cameras this figure is normally around 1%.

Barrel distortion occurs with wide angle lenses
Pincushion distortion with telephoto lenses
BARREL DISTORTION
Barrel distortion is a
lens effect which causes
images to be spherised
or "puffed out".
Barrel distortion is
associated with wide
angle lenses and
typically occurs at the
wide end of a zoom
lens.
The use of converters often
amplifies the effect. It is most
visible in images with perfectly
straight lines, especially when
they are close to the edge of
the image frame.
PINCUSHION DISTORTION
Pincushion distortion is a lens
effect which causes images to
be pinched at their center.
Pincushion distortion is
associated with tele lenses and
typically occurs at the tele end
of a zoom lens.

Make use of the grid patterns as you experiment. Exaggerate or
fix barrel/pincushion distortions.

PERSPECTIVE DISTORTION
commonly describes one of two phenomena:
WIDE ANGLE the appearance of a part of the subject as
abnormally large, relative to the rest of the scene,
TELEPHOTO an apparent lack of distance between objects in the
foreground and those behind them.

So infact almost all photography involves some measure of distortion.
A better question is perhaps ‘how much?’

The tilt back is used to correct
distortion, or perspective, in the vertical
plane. When you angle the camera up to
photograph a subject, such as a building,
the vertical lines on the ground glass
appear to converge.

• ‘Fish Eye’ effects in Photoshop.
Optically, it is impossible to get true Fish Eye effect perfect in post
production. The distortion by wide angle lenses makes objects
appear smaller the further they are from the lens. On a flat field,
such as a scanned image, the "data" required to simulate this (depth)
is not in the image. However if you shoot an image with a fairly
wide lens and tweak in Photoshop as below, you can simulate the
effect with moderate success.

Select your image and go to:
Edit>Transform>Warp>Custom>Fisheye and your done, no
cropping, etc. The custom option will appear in the top menu bar
after you select warp. Adjust the degree of the effect you want up
to 100%. Add a mask to the layer. Pull a circular selection. Inverse
the selection and fill it with black. This will cut out the background.

If you want a perfect circle crop, you'll have to make a selection
using the elipse marquee tool (constrained by the shift key), then
invert the selection and delete what's outside. Then you can apply
the Spherize filter to that.

If you just apply it the picture it will only operate on a circle that
goes to the edge of the shortest dimension, leaving undistorted
corners. So if you want to apply it to the entire image, increase the
canvas size by at least 200%.

3:2 = 35mm aspect ratio eg 8”x12” print
16:9 = cinema crop & HD video
3:1 ratio = 6x17 (eg Fuji GX617, Hassleblad XPan)
2:1 ratio = 6x12 (eg Horseman SW612 Pro)
This gives you a frame with a wider
aspect ratio, but the angle of view is still
no more than around 60 degrees,
depending on the lens.
DELIBERATE CAMERA DISTORTION

.... however, web blogs have pointed out that
the size of the aperture hole does not
actually change when you change the f-stop
slider between the two settings!

The Holga owes its incredible images to a few factors:
- simple semi-wide plastic lens
- professional-grade medium format film
- a long exposure option
- ability to shoot multiple times on the same frame
- ability to advance partial frames
- a somewhat-not-light-tight body
