y husband has helped me to achieve a respect for the outdoors. This story I am about to tell is true to the
best of my recollection (remember, I am old enough to be a grandparent).
About ten years ago, I had a great desire to go on a family camping trip. My husband tried to discourage me,
but nothing could deter me from my goal. After weeks of searching out camping gear bargains and finding a suitable
destination, I informed my husband that we were ready to tackle the great outdoors. Once again he lovingly attempted
to talk me out of it, but I was determined and would hear of no such defeat. (I think he knew something from his days
as a Boy Scout.) We loaded up two vehicles, yes two—remember, I had gotten lots of deals on equipment- -and headed
for the woods.
Upon our arrival we first encountered a small but ferocious insect referred to as the “ no see-um.” It rained the
first night and cooking was a little more than I had expected. The first morning found us tired, bug bitten, and somewhat hungry.
My husband could have said, “ I told you so,” but he didn’ t. Instead he said it might be fun to take a ride
around and enjoy the surrounding sights (actually, there wasn’ t much to see). We all loaded into the Suburban and
began our tour. Within 30 minutes everyone except my husband was asleep in the air-conditioned, bug-free climate of
our vehicle. I think he drove us around for three or four hours, then returned to our campsite at which I admitted
defeat and we prepared to return home.
This story always brings a good laugh at our family get-togethers. Not only that, but the outdoors became the
inspiration for this book. Painting the flowering designs included here will allow you to doubly enjoy the outdoor beauties, without the rain and with only painted insects. There are Painting Worksheets to help you paint each element of
the designs with easy-to-use acrylic paints. I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed designing them. This is the way
to experience the Great Outdoors. ❏

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, but I am not really sure
how to do this. I hope you will be patient and understanding with me. Though this is not
my first book or my first time writing an introduction, I feel as if I am in unfamiliar territory, probably because this is the first book since I became a grandmother. Yes, now I am not
only the mother of seven, but my life includes my first grandchild. I should feel older, but
in fact I feel more energetic than usual. Maybe it’s because I am so excited or maybe
because he’s just so beautiful (oops, my children have warned me that little boys are handsome, not beautiful). I now understand the remarks many of you have made to me about
having grandchildren.
Anyway, I need to introduce myself to all “ya’ll” that I haven’t had the pleasure of
meeting yet. I am a native Floridian (that explains the ya’ll) and mother of seven. I began
my painting adventures at my kitchen table in the late evenings. I desperately wanted to
paint but I just didn’t have the time to attend classes, so I began a process of practicing
stroke upon stroke until some of them actually began to take form and look like something.
As my brush control improved, I became braver and began to paint projects of all kinds.
After some encouragement from a few of my close friends and family, I started to charge
for my pieces and projects. Someone actually paid for those, which brings me to the present time and thousands of paintings later.
Here I am today, living a dream—the dream of being able to do something I love
and to spend time with fellow decorative painters all over the world. I love to paint and,
many times when I feel over-burdened or frustrated, I take a seat at the kitchen table with
my brushes and paints and return myself to those early times. It helps me feel that excitement and reflect upon the real reason for painting: because I love to. ❏

G ATHER YOUR SUPPLIES
FolkArt¤ Acrylic Colors
These are high quality bottle acrylics. Their rich and creamy formula and long open time make
them perfect for decorative painting. These wonderful paints are offered in a wide range of beautiful,
premixed colors. Cleanup is easy with these waterbased paints. All you need is soap and water.
FolkArt¤ Artists’ Pigment Colors
These paints are rich and opaque with brilliant pigment. Available in the same colors as
artists’ oil paints and with the same names, they are especially good for mixing your own colors.
They are intermixable with FolkArt® Acrylic Colors.
Decorator Products“ Durable Colors“
Durable Colors are used for basecoating some of the projects in this book. As the name says,
Durable Colors™ are paints made to stand up to use. They are available in a wide variety of beautiful
colors with a satin finish. They come in 8-oz. bottles which covers 10 square feet. These paints are
not only durable on objects and a variety of surfaces which receive a lot of wear, such as tables and
even floors, but they stand up to the weather as well. This is your best choice for projects that will be
used outdoors. No sealing is needed for these sturdy paints.
The decorative painting can be done with Durable Colors™, if desired, instead of the
FolkArt® Acrylic Colors, but the color selection is more limited than with acrylic paints and the consistency is different. However, if you wish to use these for any of the decorative painting, you will
find a conversion chart on page 35.
FolkArt¤ One-Stroke“ Brushes
You can find Donna’s favorite brushes conveniently packaged as collections. The set of larger
brushes is One-Stroke™ Brushes #1171 and the set of smaller brushes is One- Stroke™ Mini Brushes
#1173. You can also purchase the 3/4” One Stroke (glaze) Brush (#1176) separately and the #8 and
#10 One Stroke (flat) Brushes as a set (#1177). You’ll need the following brushes for these projects.
Flat Brushes: Use #8, #10, #12, and 3/4” flat brushes to make the multi-load strokes. Use the
largest brush that you can handle for the design. Project instructions specify which brushes to use.
Script Liners: Use #1 and #2 script liners for curlicues and other detail work.
Scruffy Brushes: Use large and mini scruffy brushes (#1172 and #1174 respectively) to pounce
moss, greenery, wisteria, and other areas as indicated.
One-Stroke“ Teaching Guides
One of the most exciting of the One-Stroke products is the extensive line of reusable teaching
guides. These are unique laminated worksheets. For learning and practice, paint right on top of the
illustrations. Wipe clean, and practice again, following the detailed how-to illustrations of the strokework that forms various elements of the designs. Using these guides, learn to paint basic strokes, various flower petals, leaves, fruits, and more. Use them over and over until you have it PERFECT
FolkArt¤ Floating Medium #868
Floating Medium allows the paint to stay wetter, thus aiding brush strokes and allowing them
to glide more easily on the surface. First, load the brush, either single, double, or multi-load. Dip the
chisel edge of the fully loaded brush into the Floating Medium puddle. Stroke back and forth on the
palette, then paint. Repeat every 2-3 strokes. If you do this more often you’ll lose your shading.

O NE STROKE BRUSH LOADING TECHNIQUE
Multi-loading: Use a multi-load technique to paint most designs
as shown in the following photos.
1. For making most strokes, you will use the chisel edge of a flat
brush.
2. To load a brush, dip one half of the chisel edge into the first
color. Dip the other side of the brush into second color. The
colors should form triangles on the corners of the brush and
meet in the middle.
3. With the multi-loaded brush, you can paint many designs with
just one or two strokes.
Single or Sideloading: For some designs, load brush with only
one color. For sideloading, first wet the brush, then dip one half
of the chisel edge in paint. Stroke the brush on the palette to
move the color across the bristles. Floating Medium works well
instead of water.

STEPS TO
BEAUTIFUL PROJECTS
1. Prepare the surface. Clean and sand, if
needed. Wipe surface clean and dry
before continuing.
2. Basecoat the surface as needed. Two
basecoats will provide a good surface on
which to paint. Allow sufficient drying
time after each coat. You may need to
lightly sand the surface after each coat.
3. Transfer pattern. First trace pattern onto
tracing paper with a pencil or pen. Lay
transfer paper under traced pattern and
use a stylus to trace pattern again to
transfer it to painting surface. Do not
press too hard on wood surfaces lest you
leave an indented imprint. Use dark
transfer paper for darker surfaces and
white for lighter surfaces. TIPS: Lightly
applying tape to the pattern and surface
will keep pattern from sliding. When
transferring, it is not necessary to trace
every find detail. Transfer the main outlines of the pattern.

first and fill in with the leaves.
• Paint florals and leaves by building
one stroke at a time.
• Each project is painted with a number of different strokes. Refer to the
Painting Worksheets.
• On wildflowers or vines, paint the
greenery first, then come back and
paint flowers, stems, and vines.
• Apply a finishing touch by painting
curlicues and your signature.
5. Let dry.
6. Apply two coats of finish to the surfaces. The particular finish that I used
on each project is in the supply list for
the project.
PAINTING W ORKSHEETS
The Painting Worksheets show individual elements of the design in the various
stages of painting them. Because the same worksheet may be used for more than one project, it may not indicate the colors used in the project you are painting. In this case, use the
colors given in the step by step project instructions and refer to the worksheet for the painting techniques and order of painting.
C LEANING & CARE
OF
BRUSHES
The proper cleaning and care of your brushes will not only make them last longer,
but also make the brushes perform as they were designed to. I think every painter has his
or her own method of brush care, but any care is better than none at all. I will share my
method with you, but you may improve on it with my blessings. But by all means, do
some kind of brush care!
1. Thoroughly clean the brush with water, using the grid in the bottom of the Brush Basin®.
2. Squeeze Brush Plus® brush cleaner into the bristles and work it in with your fingers,
making sure it is distributed all the way to the ferrule. Continue to work it into bristles,
then rinse with water. Repeat if needed.
3. Dry bristles with a clean rag or paper towels. Be sure to shape them as you are drying.
Leaving a small amount of moisture in the bristles will not harm them.
4. Brush the bristles into a non-perfumed and non-deodorant bar of soap. This will help to
keep the bristles in their correct shape. Rinse brushes before painting again. ❏

Preparation
1. Lightly sand wood and wipe it free of dust.
2. Basecoat center of backboard with two
coats of Chamois Durable Color™. Let
dry after each coat.
3. Paint base of planter and frame of backboard with two coats of Mustard Durable
Color™. Let dry after each coat.
4. Transfer pattern to backboard and front
side of planter area.

Paint the Design
Cat:
Refer to the Cat & Bird Painting Worksheet.
1. Basecoat body of cat with Wicker
White.
2. Load the 3/4” brush with Wicker White
and pick up a touch of Licorice. Add
body details such as fur to the cat using
the chisel edge of brush.
3. Refer to the Painting Worksheet for cat’s facial details.
Tulips
Refer to the Tulip & Butterfly Painting Worksheet.
1. Triple load the 3/4” brush with Berry Wine, Wicker White, and Sunflower (instead of
the School Bus Yellow indicated on worksheet). Paint tulips with the Sunflower side
turned to outer edge. Layer petals from back to front.
2. Paint bud with same brush and colors.
Pansies:
Refer to the Pansy & Apple Blossom Painting Worksheet, using colors given below.
1. Double load the 3/4” brush with Yellow Ochre and Dioxazine Purple. Occasionally
pick up a touch of Wicker White on the Yellow Ochre side. Paint some pansies and
buds with these colors. Other color combinations for pansies: Dioxazine Purple, Red
Violet and Wicker White, or Berry Wine, Sunflower, and Wicker White. For softer looking petals, invert the color inside out.
2. Paint pansy centers with the #12 brush double loaded with Green Umber and Yellow
Ochre, as follows: On chisel edge, paint the three strokes in the center of the flower.
Dot center with Yellow Ochre.
Stems & Leaves:
Refer to Tulips & Butterfly, Leaves, and Pansy & Apple Blossom Painting Worksheets.
1. Double load the 3/4” flat brush with Green Umber and Wicker White. Occasionally pick up
a touch of Sunflower or Berry Wine on the white side of brush, depending on which leaf or
stem you are painting. Turn the Green Umber side to outside. Refer to photo of project.
2. For tulip calyxes and stems, use the chisel edge of brush and pull to one point.
3. Smaller filler leaves: Double load the #12 flat brush with Green Umber and Wicker
White. Occasionally pick up a touch of Sunflower or Yellow Ochre (for a darker shade)
on the Wicker White side of brush. With the Green Umber side of brush to the outside,
paint the one-stroke leaves as shown on the Leaves Painting Worksheet.
4. Paint the leaves of yellow flowers as shown on the Pansy & Apple Blossom worksheet,
using Sunflower in place of Sunny Yellow.
Violets:
Refer to the Violets, Filler Flowers, Wisteria, Bow & Bee Painting Worksheet.
1. Double load the #12 flat brush with Dioxazine Purple and Wicker White. (For some
strokes, use Red Violet instead on the Dioxazine Purple side.) With Wicker White
turned to the outer edge, paint the petals of the whole violets and trailing petals.
2. Dip handle end of brush into Yellow Ochre and dot flower centers.
Yellow Flowers:
These are painted like apple blossoms. Refer to the Pansy & Apple Blossoms Painting Worksheet.
1. Paint five shell-like petals per flower with double loaded Yellow Ochre and Wicker
White. Use the #10 flat brush and turn Wicker White to the outer edge.
2. Pounce flower centers with Green Umber, Sunflower, and Wicker White (instead of
colors indicated on worksheet), multi-loaded on the small scruffy brush.
Butterflies:
Refer to the butterfly on the Tulip & Butterfly Painting Worksheet.
1. Load the #10 flat brush with Dioxazine Purple and Wicker White and a touch of
Sunflower. Paint wings by pushing brush down, then gently pulling it to the chisel edge.
2. Paint body and antennae with inky Licorice, using the #2 script liner.

Preparation
Birdhouse:
1. Lightly wipe free of dust.

1. Lightly wipe free of dust.
2. Dip dampened ocean sponge into Fairway Green, then Vanilla, then Limestone. Sponge
the entire outside surface with these mottled colors. Let dry.

Leaves:
Refer to Daisy & Stalk Flower Painting Worksheet for large daisy leaves. Refer to Leaves
Painting Worksheets for the smaller leaves.
1. Multi-load the 3/4” flat brush with Green Umber, Wicker White, and a touch of Berry
Wine. With Green Umber to the outer edge, paint the large leaves.
2. Multi-load the #12 flat brush with Green Umber, Wicker White, and a touch of
Sunflower and paint the smaller leaves.
Daisies:
Refer to Daisy & Stalk Flower Painting Worksheet.
1. Paint daisy petals with double loaded Wicker White and a touch of Yellow Ochre
(instead of the Sunflower indicated on worksheet), using the #12 flat brush.
2. Pounce flower centers with Yellow Ochre and Burnt Umber (instead of the Burnt
Carmine indicated on worksheet) loaded together on the small scruffy brush.
Stalk Flowers:
1. Paint petals with Berry Wine and Wicker White double loaded on the #8 flat brush.
Also paint some trailing petals.
2. Repeat step 1 with double loaded Midnight and Wicker White.
3. Dip handle end of brush into Yellow Ochre and dot centers.
4. Paint stems and calyxes with double loaded Sunflower and Green Umber on the #10
flat brush.
Wisteria (Birdhouse Only):
Paint with double loaded Dioxazine Purple and Wicker White, using the large scruffy brush.
Curlicues:
Paint with inky Green Umber, using the #2 script liner.
Butterflies (Birdhouse Only):
Refer to the butterfly on the Tulip & Butterfly Painting Worksheet.
1. Load the #10 flat brush with Yellow Ochre and Wicker White (instead of colors given

Let dry and sand lightly after each coat.

dry.

Branches:

Paint with double loaded Burnt Umber and Butter Pecan (instead of
the Wicker White indicated on worksheet), using the 3/4” flat brush.
Berries:
1. Paint with double loaded Midnight and Wicker White, alternating with Berry Wine and Wicker. Use the #8 flat brush and
turn Midnight or Berry Wine to the outer edge.
2. Paint stems with inky Burnt Umber, using the #2 script liner.
Leaves:
Refer to the Leaves Painting Worksheet.
1. LARGE BACKGROUND LEAVES: Load the 3/4” brush with

1. Load 3/4” brush with Berry Wine,
Wicker White, and Sunflower (instead

worksheet). With Sunflower side to
outer edge, paint tulips. Layer petals
from back to front.
2. Paint buds with same brush.
