Statoil Technology Invest
What we do?
What’s New?
Statoil recognises the need to support SMEs,
particularly during the first critical years before
their technologies have achieved commercial
success. Statoil Technology Invest (STI) provides
expert technical and financial guidance as well as
project based and equity funding. STI is staffed
with Statoil employees with experience in seed &
venture capital, and knowledge of how to develop
oilfield technology companies.
Statoil Technology Invest has invested in four new
companies, made one exit and entered into two
new LOOP contracts in 2015
At STI we invest in companies with varying levels
of maturity. We have divided them into three
phases: STI’s LOOP program provides project
funding and access to technical expertise & pilots
without taking ownership, while Seed funding and
Venture both involve STI taking an equity stake in
a company.
• Investments: Quantico, Hicor, CannSeal and
Corvus
• Exits: Resman
• LOOP: Intelligent Mud Solution and Atla Lasers
What’s the Value?
Statoil’s goal with STI is to accelerate
commercialization and implementation of new
technology. Introduction of new technology plays
an important role in improving Statoil’s operations
and in reaching our corporate ambitions of
increasing find rates, increasing recovery, and
reducing cost. Seventy percent of companies in
our portfolio are in the process of implementing
technology in Statoil, with the rest on the way!
The objective with today’s meeting is to showcase new technology from venture backed companies with
further implementation potential in Statoil.

CannSeal
What we do?
What’s the value?
CannSeal allows a tailor designed epoxy plug to
be placed in the annulus. The plug can be used to
stop annular crossflow and help water shut off. The
patented tool is run on a standard mono conductor
cable. The CannSeal tool will perforate tubing or
casing and inject the sealant material in a single wire
line run, forming a donut shaped epoxy plug. The
perforation holes will be sealed by the plug itself, so
no straddling is required. The epoxy can be injected
into an open hole annulus, a gravel pack or into a
cement matrix repairing a micro annulus.
ƒƒ Water production threatens profitability
of mature fields and cause environmental
challenges
ƒƒ The epoxy plug may extend the life of mature
fields by improving the recovery rate and reduce
water production
ƒƒ The CannSeal method of plugging is very
attractive thanks to low cost intervention done
with electric wireline
ƒƒ Short production interruption – minimized Non
Productive Time
ƒƒ The sealant material is premixed onshore and
carried in canisters being an integrated part of
the tool
ƒƒ The 3.3 inches OD tool fits 4 ½ inches to 7
inches tubing or casing
ƒƒ The epoxy can be made very application
specific, with adjusted viscosity, density and
curing dynamics based on the actual needs
ƒƒ Even a short epoxy plug may withstand high
dynamic forces
ƒƒ The plug may be used to reestablish well
barriers
ƒƒ The CannSeal technology may contribute to
P&A operations
What’s new?
No other solutions can inject sealant material into
the annulus in a single wireline run. The epoxy
material can be adapted to the viscosity of choice,
depending on the application. The plug material is
designed to have neutral buoyancy. This means it
will stay in place during the solidification process.
It will not sink nor drift away from the injection
points. Epoxy appears to be glued to the surface
and have limited radial shrinkage. Advanced
instrumentation is built into the tool, reporting tool
operation and real time well conditions to surface.

E Plug
What we do?
What’s the value?
E Plug AS is a technology development company
that has developed a single run, multiple set and
release barrier plug together with an innovative
running tool for interventions. The development
has been supported by Statoil Technology Invest,
The Norwegian Research Council and Innovation
Norway.
The unique method of operating the TorcPlug with
using rotation to set and release it introduces the
possibility of repositioning and activating the plug
multiple times in one single run. A feature is not
available with any other barrier qualified bridge
plug in the market.
What’s new?
The TorcPlug and Electric Manipulation Tool
have now been field trialed in a Statoil well on
Statfjord, where it was used for leak detection in a
production well.
The 5 ½” system was successfully deployed and
set at 3 different depths in the well in order to
evaluate if the leak was in one of the gas lift valves,
or in the tubing between them.
All of the technology features were tested, and the
technology is now TRL7 approved, ready for broad
implementation in Statoil and commercialized
globally.

Through this feature the TorcPlug and EMT is an
attractive solution for operators which need to
reduce risk and increase efficiency of operations
to meet the industry challenge regarding cost
reduction. It also promotes a safer working practice
at it involves less rigging operations needed with
conventional plugs.
CapWell
What we do?
Capline makes well intervention more efficient. It is
an integrated combination of mechanical wireline
services, distributed sensing, and downhole
measurements with surface readout in one small
package.
What’s new?
The technology is developed as a counter-measure
to the increasing complexity of well intervention.
Well-known principles and recent developments
from other domains have been put together to
make a well intervention winch small enough to fit
it inside a pressure vessel. That pressure vessel is
installed as an extension of the well on an ad-hoc
basis.
The miniaturization of the winch is made possible
by replacing the traditional steel wire with a
synthetic rope. An optical fiber embedded inside
the rope enables distributed sensing and downhole
measurements with surface readout. All the seals
of the Capline unit are metal-to-metal.
The technology development, which was
supported by the Norwegian Research Council,
ConocoPhillips, and Statoil, culminated in a
successful pilot job at Ekofisk. CapWell recorded
the distributed temperature and acoustic
emittance of the well and replaced a gas lift valve,
using the same equipment throughout the job and
without any misrun.
What’s the value?
Capline requires less equipment and fewer
personnel than traditional intervention methods
and enables better well assessment through
distributed sensing. Operational footprint, number
of lifts, maintenance, and transportation are
all reduced by a factor between 30 and 50%.
Moreover, the technical and personal safety is
increased.
The technology holds a unique potential to
improve riser-less well intervention of subsea
installations.

Sharp Reflections
What we do?
Sharp Reflections uses Big Data to identify
hydrocarbons and estimate reservoir properties from
seismic data. We extract the seismic signal directly
from pre-stack data, eliminating the loss of detail
that today occurs when data volumes are reduced by
processing contractors to ease storage, handling, and
interpretation. Our Pre-Stack Pro software provides
an integrated server-based platform to identify and
visualize potential drilling targets, optimize seismic
data quality in targeted reservoir zones, and assess
the likelihood of finding hydrocarbons before drilling.
In addition to software, Sharp Reflections offers
a broad range of data enhancement and reservoir
characterization services, tailored to big data. We
apply our unique geophysical solutions to diverse
reservoirs in the North Sea and other producing oil
and gas basins.
What’s new?
Seismic surveys record a complex 3D image of
subsurface echoes, and measure the change in
signal strength of waves bouncing off reservoirs in a
fan of angles. These data are interpreted to predict
rock properties and fluid type. To fit in the memory
of workstations, the raw information is usually
condensed to a handful of coarse average images,
resulting in loss of detail.

Pre-Stack Pro is a highly-parallel, server based
computing tool that overcomes the practical data size
limits of a single workstation. Our solution is powerful
enough to analyze the full lossless seismic data
stream. The higher data density provides enhanced
detail and allows interpreters to minimize artifacts
that interfere with the subtle fluid signal.
Modern 3D seismic surveys are growing rapidly in
size and sample density both onshore and offshore,
and require increased compute power to visualize
and delineate drilling prospects. By leveraging highperformance computing, our users can confidently
screen and analyze new 3D datasets in days, rather
than the weeks and months required with traditional
interpretation solutions
What’s the value?
Exploration teams using Pre-Stack Pro report
measurable improvements in seismic data quality and
signal integrity, and improved confidence identifying
prospects with Direct Hydrocarbon Indicators (DHIs)
that reduce drilling risk. In developing fields, improved
signal clarity leads to more reliable identification of
reservoir sweet spots, and more accurate delineation
of in-place reserves. Our clients optimize their drill
portfolios by choosing the right wells to drill, and drill
fewer mislocated wells by exploiting the pre-stack data
signal.
Solution Seeker
What we do?
The oil industry has come a long way in
establishing efficient production routines. However,
there is still a potential to squeeze out more
barrels by making fine-tuned production decisions
on a daily basis.
Solution Seeker develops a software advisor,
or a virtual team member if you like, called
ProductionCompass. ProductionCompass provides
the operators and production engineers with
automatically generated alternatives on how to
adjust e.g. well chokes so that the production of oil
is increased, without violating the gas compression
capacity. The purpose is to improve and streamline
the work process that leads to the production
decision, so that the operating cost is reduced,
while the production is increased.
What’s new?
The industry has attempted to apply optimization
algorithms in combination with simulators for more
than a decade, with surprisingly few success stories.
State-of-the-Art methods often require so much
maintenance and manual input from experienced
and specialized engineers to function properly, that
they are abandoned.
Solution Seeker’s answer to getting around the
decades old production optimization hurdle is;
simplify and automate. The name of our product
reflects on a completely new way of approaching
this hurdle. Solution Seeker leans on simple
models that are continuously updated from the
steady flow of fresh measurement data. This
enables automation and makes the workflow more
intuitive, without the use of advanced simulators. In
situations with low information content in the data,
ProductionCompass suggests experiments that
enriches the dataset to enhance performance.
What’s the value?
Solution Seeker offers increased production through
better utilization of production system bottlenecks.
For the oil companies this means:
ƒƒ Sustainable production optimization in true
real-time
ƒƒ Increased production and revenues
ƒƒ A system that leverages and frees up your best
people
ƒƒ A less complex, less work intensive, more
automatic and more intuitive production
optimization workflow

M-Flow
What we do?
What’s the value?
M-Flow supply full bore, non-intrusive water-cut
analysers for 2 and 3 phase flows in hostile, sour,
solids laden and heavy oil environments. Our
mission is to eliminate gaps in key fluids data to
deliver continuous improvements to production
economics.
Water-Cut monitoring is a key issue for production
optimisation and control of revenue. The quality of
water-cut information and its cost of delivery can
be substantially improved by M-Flow, by:
What’s new?
By using sensing systems embedded into the wall
of hydrocarbon qualified composite (non-metallic)
pipes, M-Flow can monitor the harshest fluids with
reliability and with no risk to production integrity.
Unlike systems based around steel pipes,
composite systems provide a transparent flow
section which allows sensitive sensor components
to be kept away from the corrosive/erosive flow,
while the whole of the pipe flow is monitored.
By placing active components into plug in or clamp
on modules which are easily interchanged, there
is no reason to ever risk or interrupt production
to intervene. M-Flow’s Sure-Cut is a smart, data
delivery pipe that is installed for plant life.

• reducing basic measurement uncertainty and
extending the range of measurements possible.
• reducing direct calibration and maintenance
costs and revenue loss through related
interruptions to production.
• reducing the manpower levels and safety
exposures associated with gathering data.
Effective production information depends on
having accurate, robust and cost effective means
of taking direct measurements of fluids. M-flow

can be generated reliably, and at low risk.
Darcy
What we do?
What’s the value?
Darcy is a sand control engineering specialist
that designs, develops and manufactures unique
downhole technology for the global oil and gas
industry. The organisation, led by an experienced
team, offers a range of patented Endurance
Hydraulic Screen® technology that provides an
alternative to costly and labour intensive gravel
packing methods. With the ability to mobilise
rapidly, Darcy provides a global service including
deepwater regions, mature fields and HPHT wells.
Hydraulic Screen technology provides an
opportunity to replace open hole gravel packing
with effective ‘pump free’ sand control and gain:
ƒƒ Increased Operational Efficiency and
minimised HSE challenges; the system simplifies
completion operations, logistics (equipment and
fluids) and removes heavy lifting operations.
ƒƒ Simple activation using surface applied
pressure. The 3rd party hanger is set and
Hydraulic Screens activated in one simple step;
the setting process taking approx. 1hr rig time
ƒƒ Easy & Minimal Offshore Personnel
requirement of a 2 man crew, de-mobilised
immediately after screen activation (no rig down
and backload of heavy pumping equipment)
ƒƒ Integration with standard completion equipment
contributes overall cost efficiency to the end user
ƒƒ Mechanical strength and collapse resistance
for high geo-mechanical loads and extreme
production conditions, whilst maintaining base
pipe geometry. The screen design does not
compromise well production.
ƒƒ Time and Cost savings provided by a significant
opportunity to reduce overall completion time –
results to date show up to 30% reduction, setting
a new benchmark for what can be achieved.
What’s new?
Achieving flow performance in openhole
completions often requires removal of the annular
gap between the screen section and wellbore. For
the first time in the industry, patented Hydraulic
Screen technology has been utilised to overcome
the challenges associated with the high failure rate
and costs of gravel packing methods. As a direct
replacement for gravel packs, the Hydraulic Screen
system has been successfully installed for Statoil
(Statfjord), a field faced with challenges associated
to continuous pressure depletion and reduced
margins for pumping traditional open hole gravel
packs.

©Montaag. Project: Sekal
What we do?
What’s the value?
Sekal provides software for drilling optimization
to simulate downhole conditions for trend analysis
(DrillScene) or automatic drilling processes
(DrillTronics).
The first deployment of DrillTronics resulted in
positive results:
1.Improved consistency
2.Assisted driller to avoid down hole problems
3.Delivered significant efficiency savings
Consistent operations allow for a systematic
learning and improvement processes driving drilling
performance.
DrillTronics limited the risk for down hole problems
when assisting the driller to avoid wellbore
instability situations and operational challenges,
such as stuck pipe, sidetracks, fracturing, and mud
losses. Avoiding such problems will ultimately
protect the reservoir from damages from mud
intrusion and well bore instability, and increase
quality of collected formation data. The drilling
control system will intervene. The intervention is
based on DrillTronics dynamic modelling Ultimately,
atomization reduces risk for human errors with the
potential to improved safety, reduces risk for well
control challenges and consequential environmental
incidents. DrillTronics improves efficiency
significantly through more consistent and efficient
automatic functions reducing the time spent in
specific operations like auto pump start-up, auto
reciprocation, auto friction test and optimized hole
cleaning and tripping operations.
DrillTronics models determine the drillers´ actions
(e.g. string accelerations, velocities, rotation,
pump start-ups, and flow rates) that will cause the
dynamic downhole pressure to reach or exceed
upper and lower well stability- and geo-pressure
prognosis. The results are used to safeguard
operational sequences to protect the wellbore.
What’s new?
From October 2014 to May 2015, the DrillTronics
software was used on four wells. Efficiency
savings of rig time per well were documented.
Results showed increased efficiency, consistency,
and safeguarding of the well against human error
potentially leading to down hole problems. On
several occasions, the system triggered on high
hookloads and high pump pressures, helping the
driller to quickly avoid trouble and drill ahead
without incidents.
