The state-of-the-art indoor sporting and entertainment
center, The Perth Arena, officially opened late 2012, providing
a world class venue for national and international events to
Western Australia. The venue was architecturally designed to
hold up to 13,910 spectators for the tennis events, 14,846 for
the basketball events and a maximum of 15,500 for concerts.
The Sika Flooring System was the perfect solution to suit
the aesthetic design of the venue and the durability required
for the functionality of the facility. Sika are pleased to have
been involved in such an architecturally challenging project.
Concrete Colour is making a big splash for Sika, due to
the interest in the various colours available in our range,
locally and globally. The diversity of what Sika offers through
Concrete Colours is shown in projects such as the Brisbane
Transport Corridor in Australia and internationally through
the “Comedy Carpet” in North West England.
Our main focus is to continue providing a wide range
of solutions from basement to roof in all aspects of the
construction process. We supply the highest quality
products and we offer an on-going quality support system

THE BRISBANE TRANSPORT CORRIDOR
SIKA COLORFLO CONCRETE COLOUR
APPLICATION IN BRISBANE QLD
Stage One of the Darra to Springfield Transport Corridor
is an impressive new piece of integrated road and rail
infrastructure designed to serve the needs of residents living
along Brisbane’s expanding Western Corridor.
Completed by the Horizon Alliance - ahead of time and under
the $800 million budgeted cost - the project incorporates a
new passenger rail line and station. A shared pathway for
pedestrian and cycle traffic and a duplicated Centenary
Highway.
The rail component of this project saw a new 4.5km rail line
from Darra to a new station at Richlands being built, with
a 650-space car park. The road component included the
duplication of the Centenary Highway from 2 to 4 lanes
from the intersection of Boundary and Kelliher Roads at
Richlands, to north of the Logan Motorway Interchange.
On a project of such scope, concrete was a natural choice for
pavements, retaining and noise walls. The challenge for the
design team from GHD was to provide relief to these large
areas of concrete - a goal they achieved by successfully
integrating different materials, textures, finishes and colours.
Sika Australia became involved in supplying the concrete
colour for a range of different areas of the project, utilising
the newly established Sika ColorfFo® System.
NEWS FROM SIKA WORLDWIDE
COMEDY CARPET USING SIKA CONCRETE PRODUCTS
PUBLIC ARTWORKS, BLACKPOOL, UK
There were a number of Sika products used throughout the
works on The Brisbane Transport Corridor. Sika® Rugasol
90 and Sika® Rugasol® MH were used in the bridge beams,
while Sika® Monotop® 615 HB and Sika® Monotop® 620
were used to repair existing beams. Sikadur® 52 was used
to repair any existing cracks, while Sikaflex®-PRO was used
as a finishing sealant in all areas. Sika were able to provide
the complete solution for this project, from basement to roof,
start to finish.
The insitu, broom-finished grey concrete shared pathway
extends 5.6 kilometers along the Corridor. The project as
a whole utilises some 35,000 square meters of concrete
retaining walls, made of soil-nail construction clad with
precast concrete panels and then painted on site.
The colour scheme and patterning on these walls is designed
to be legible to road and rail users passing by at speed. A
pallet of three colours has been used, with varying height
bands of colour creating a ‘flickering wave‘ visual effect.

Sitting on a carpet to enjoy a bit of comedy or enjoying comedy
written on a carpet – in Blackpool they promise you both!
Created by artist Gordon Young, and designed in collaboration
with Why Not Associates, the Comedy Carpet is a celebration
of comedy on an extraordinary scale. Referring to the work of
more than 1,000 comedians and comedy writers, the carpet
gives visual form to jokes, songs and catchphrases dating from
the early days of variety to the present. Sited in front of the
Blackpool Tower in North West England, the 2,200 sqm work
of art is pushing the boundaries of public art and typography
to their limits.
The carpet contains over 160,000 letters cut from solid red and
black granite which are embedded into a specially created cobalt blue concrete. Construction entailed casting the 30 mm
deep letters into high quality concrete panels. The letters were
laid out in a mold, upside down and back to front, and cast in
a white, hardwearing grout to form the visual layer when completed and turned over.
To avoid disturbing the mosaic of letters, it was necessary for
this base layer to be cast without added vibration in order to
consolidate the concrete. The entire process, with concrete
and superplasticizer support, was carried out by Sika UK.
Self compacting concrete containing Sika admixtures played
an important role in the production of Comedy Carpet. This
concrete mix, containing specially adapted Sika® ViscoCrete®
superplasticisers, produces unique fluidity and inherent compactibility. Once completed and laid in place on the headland,
the carpet was ground, polished and sealed. Concrete admixture, Sika® Control 40 was also contained in the mix to greatly
reduce any shrinkage during curing of the concrete.
The Comedy Carpet is one of the largest and most ambitious
pieces of public art ever commissioned in the UK. It has taken
five years to complete. As well as its sandy beaches, piers,
amusement parks and pleasure beaches, Blackpool is traditionally devoted to entertainment and show business, including the Grand Theatre, the Winter Gardens and the Blackpool
Tower.
Created as a key work of art, the Comedy Carpet will also be a
stage for performances and events.

COATED FLOORS FOR FULL EFFECT
The Perth Arena is a new boutique multi-purpose
sports and entertainment stadium, designed to
entice the public into enjoying a wider range of
entertainment options locally.
Sika has a history of providing a variety of construction
solutions in stadiums, from flooring to sealants and
waterproofing. In particular Australian projects featuring
Sika systems include the MCG, AAMI Stadium, Skilled
Stadium, Etihad Stadium and Adelaide Oval. Each of
the above stadiums presented their own issues and
challenges to overcome, an element of service that
Sika prides itself upon.
5
INTERNAL CONCOURSE
All internal concourse walkways surrounding the
arena are protected with Sikafloor® 263NS in colour
schemes that matched the wall design and the texture,
to be aesthteically pleasing. The installation on the
concourse walkways called for the base colour of
Grey White then an inlay of the wall pattern in the form
of a thick black band to be continued in to the floor.
BAR AND FUNCTION AREAS
Bar and function areas in clear over polished concrete
with Sikafloor® PU. Mechanical and switch rooms, as
well back of house access way corridors, were coated
with Sikafloor® Duraseal Clear.
Architects, A.R.M had a brief that this multi-purpose
events stadium reflect the new and ambitious nature
of Perth. This would involve durable flooring on all
concrete surfaces that must also be sympathetic to the
overall design colours and aesthetics. The success of
the flooring surfaces specified at the MCG Southern
Stand project lead A.R.M to consult Sika again for
Perth. Anti Skid Industries, a Sika approved Sikafloor®
Contractor, were contracted for this important
installation.
SEATING AREAS
As a result Sikafloor® 2530W coating was specified
and used on all concrete seating platforms, associated
stairs and access ways within the stadium area.
The colour scheme is unusual for a stadium and was at
the request of the client the WA government.
The interior has a strong theme, and our Sikafloor®
2530W in Signal Blue matched the remainder of the
decor and was used on all seating platforms as well as
stairs.
The Perth Arena Project was split into a range of
key areas, with Sika using over 8,000m2 of flooring
throughout the arena. Each area dealt with different
requirements for products and visual schemes.
Floor finishes had to conform to the Australian
Standards slip rating for commercial spaces. All
flooring joints were sealed using Sikaflex®-11FC elastic
durable polyurethane sealant. The result is that Sika
flooring is playing an integral part in this important new
facility, with a daring design, that is now servicing the
dynamic city of Perth.

Sustainable Wood Floor Bonding
EASTERN TREATMENT PLANT GROUTING
SikaDUR 42 grout application
sewage treatment plant
The Eastern Treatment Plant was opened in 1975 at
Bangholme to serve Melbourne’s growing population and
to support the Western Treatment Plant. The plant sits on
1,100 hectares and treats about 330 million litres of sewage
a day, which is around 40% of Melbourne’s total sewage
produced.
As part of upgrading the existing plant, the sediment
tanks needed plastic lids placed on top of them.
These lids needed to have a level surface so that
they would align when put in place.
The surface of the existing substrate was too uneven to
be used, so Melbourne Water required the substrate to be
levelled out prior to the application of the lids, using a selflevelling product that was resistant to sewerage, had high
early strength and was easy to use on site.
Sika was one of the suppliers that was asked to provide
a solution. After carefully evaluating the requirements
Sika

approval.
Sika have an extensive range of experience working with
water treatment plants, potable water and contaminated
water.
Sika aims to address environmental and safety concerns
throughout the value chain, from product start to finish.
This means delivering equivalent or better solutions
while consuming less material and energy. Environmental
management is crucial for Sika’s future, globally and
locally, as limited resources, climate change, water, and
infrastructure re-shape the way we do business. Therefore
Sika commits to a better environment with an integrated
approach including product sustainability, supply chain
sustainability and social sustainability.
As a company with a strong innovative tradition, Sika not only
develops creative solutions, we also engage in sharing this
tradition across company lines with our partners in trade and
industry. Solutions such as environmentally friendly wood
floor bonding create an easy and aesthetically pleasing way
for architects and home owners to lower the environmental
impact of their flooring choice. Sika’s systems for wood
floors consist of innovative products which contribute to
sustainable construction solutions
Sika strives to develop best solutions and therefore created
a full system for wood floor bonding that even exceeds the
highest requirements of different legislations and eco-labels.
By choosing to use Sika products on your next project,
you know that you combine Global Innovative Solutions
with Local Knowledge, towards a sustainable future.
Sika WOOD FLOOR BONDING PRODUCT ADVANTAGES:
Elastic bonding reduces the stress to substrates and

They ensure good indoor air quality and safe application
because all products are solvent free and have very low
emissions.
Elastic adhesives enhance footfall sound dampening of
floor systems
They improve living atmosphere which is of great
importance especially in urbanized regions with dense
populations.
Fast drying and reacting products shorten the application
time, which enable contractors to finish their work in less
time.
If you would like more information on Sika’s range of Wood
Floor Bonding Products, or more information on our range of
products that are environmentally sustainable, please contact
Sika at any time on 1300 22 33 48.
This experience lead to the short processing time
and the ability to quickly deliver on the needs of the
customer in the grouting of the Eastern Treatment Plant.
Sikadur®-42 is a 3 component pourable or castable grout,
based on solvent free epoxy resin and selected aggregates.
After a stringent evaluation process by both the Water
Resource Alliance and Melbourne Water’s engineering
team, the product was chosen based on its flowabilty and
self-levelling capability, along with its bond strength to the
existing substrate and high early strength.
Another important factor that was taken into account was
that the Sikadur®-42 was insensitive to moisture during
application, cure or whilst in service and had resistance
to a wide variety of chemicals. This made it the perfect
solution for all aspects of the job, with many of the added
benefits that Sika are renowned for, such as customer
service and testing facilities.

sARNAFIL tpo membranes
Sika has long produced a range of waterproofing membranes
for use in roofing applications, such as the Sika Sarnafil®
products, these have all been PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
membranes. Recently, Sika Australia has introduced the full
range of Sarnafil® T TPO membranes and accessories in to
the local market.
Sika is one of the most experienced single ply membrane
producers with track record of more than 50 years. Our
production incorporates most the efficient and proven
technologies such as:
Calendering – meaning to roll out with heat. Production
line consists of several pairs of heated rollers that press the
polymer compound into a sheet.
Extrusion – a process by which a doughlike polymer
compound is forced through a wideslot die by a slowly and
continuously rotating screw, emerging as a continuous sheet
Spread Coating – a method by which a liquid polymer
compound is spread across the roof substrate.
Membrane Reinforcement
The Sarnafil® T Range of membranes have 3 different types
of reinforcement depending on the needs of the project.
For mechanically fixed applications, Sarnafil® T Has a
polyester scrim reinforcement.
For fully adhered applications, Sarnafil® TG has an inlay of
glass non-woven fibers. Both reinforcement technologies
have excellent dimenional stability.
FLOORING FOR THE FOOD INDUSTRY
BAKERS DELIGHT SPECIFICATION
NATION WIDE
Bakers Delight are a very successful retail organisation with
over 150 stores nation wide.
The nature of retail baking is that the stores are in constant
use, meaning wear and tear from trolleys, plastic pallets
and dough mixers which take a heavy toll on the floor.
Over time they found that the commercial vinyl floors could
not withstand these demands and were causing issues
with hygiene and replacement logistics issues.
The building construction division of Bakers Delight were
interested in a floor that could be placed in new stores
as well as the refurbishment of existing stores and could
withstand the demands of their activities.
Sikafloor PurCem was proposed as a result of the floors
success with other national retailers, such as Coles and
Woolworths, as well as many commercial food installations.
Management wanted to see the floor in an environment
where it had been tested severely over a period of time
to be convinced. Site visits were organised to some
industrial food manufacturers to demonstrate the current
serviceability of the floors, all at different stages in the
lifecycle of the product.
®
®
Sikafloor®-22 PurCem® is a three part, water dispersed
high wear resistant polyurethane modified, cement and
aggregate screed with self-levelling properties.
It is broadcast with quartz and or silica carbide aggregates
to increase surface texture and slip resistance. It is
typically installed at 4.5 to 9 mm thick, and makes the
perfect coating for food areas, having been used on
a number of high profile jobs including the Perth Arena
(story pg.5).
Bakers Delight were sufficiently impressed by the
performance of these floors that they decided to specify
Sikafloor® 22 PurCem® in their stores nationally.
Since then, many stores have been completed across
the country, and Sikafloor® 22 PurCem® has shown to be
equal to the task.
Bakers Delight don’t have to be concerned with failing
floors and their franchisees can rely on the floor not to
present the problem of the past. Sika have again provided
the best solution to the problem through our Global
Innovative Solutions and Local Knowledge.

THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OF TIMBER
Hotel refurbishment without stopping operation
proves possible with Sika
PRODUCTS USED IN THE QT GOLD COAST
The boutique QT hotel on Queensland’s Gold Coast
has undergone a major refurbishment, including
the laying of more than 3000 square metres of
timber flooring, transforming it into a fresh and
modern travel destination.
Sika® Primer MB: Epoxy primer and moisture
regulator for timber flooring systems
Billed as ‘nostalgic surfer chic meets Miami catwalk
cool’, the hotel received new timber floors throughout
the reception, lift areas and entrance ways.
The timber flooring itself is perfectly offset visually by the
bright 60’s inspired coloured accessories, furniture and
fittings. The visual contrast, between the bright colours
and the pale, neutral coloured timber creates a highly
relaxed atmosphere in the hotel, which is a testiment to
the contractor, Timber Floorings Unlimited.
The work had to be carried out while the hotel was in
operation, with around 300 square metres completed
every 24 hours including the lift areas on every floor.
The fast pace required for the project was met with the
help of an efficient sealing and bonding solution from
Sika, requiring minimal surface preparation.
The contractor tested 3 different surface preparation
methods for bonding to tiles, concrete and ply; a general
clean, a light grind and a heavy grind. The light grind
provided excellent adhesion for the SikaBond® -T55(J).
Beads were applied using an application gun and the
oak boards were bedded into the beads, resulting in a
strong yet flexible bond.

PRODUCT LAUNCH
June, 2013
SikaBond® SprayFix is a multipurpose, high performance,
aerosol spray adhesive which can be used for both temporary
and permanent bonding applications. This product has
recently been launched in the retail hardware market, as the
perfect solution for a variety of projects, including upholstery,
laminating and craft projects.
Containing no chlorine-based solvents, SikaBond® SprayFix is
perfect for use indoors without causing any harm to people
using the product, or requiring ventilation equipment for use.
With its ability to adhere to a number of substrates including
wood, metal, plastics, cork, foam and fibreglass, SikaBond®
SprayFix offers an easy to apply, simple solution to any
adhesive need you may have around the home.
Spray from a distance of about 20 cm, using a sweeping
motion to get an even coverage of adhesive. For temporary
or low strength permanent bonding, spray only one surface.
For high strength, permanent bonding, apply adhesive to both
surfaces. Allow the adhesive to become tacky before firmly
pressing the surfaces together, applying even pressure along
the entire bonding surface.
Pressing the surfaces together either while the adhesive is
still wet or after it has lost its tack will give poor bonds – the
optimum time for bonding is when the adhesive is dry but
still tacky. Bonded materials may be repositioned within 1-2
minutes to ensure correct surface alignment.
SikaBond® Sprayfix will be available for purchase through
all Bunnings stores and through a number of independant
retailers as of mid-June 2013.
