Fossils provide pictures of past lives frozen
in time.
The hills, prairies, woods and creek beds
of Wise County are rife and rich with fossil
remains. They hold the images of countless
creatures of bygone eras.
“We’re just people caught up in a time
change,” said Bryan “Red” Malone, 50. “Not
too many years ago most people in the county wouldn’t argue with what we were doing.”
The Malone brothers are well known in the
area as expert hunters, trackers and trappers, but some of them also have a notorious
reputation and are facing a list of criminal
allegations.
During the early hours of Jan. 28, almost
60 law-enforcement officers raided their 10
acres of property a few miles south of Green-
wood. All five brothers, along with several
others, were charged with engaging in organized criminal activities.
Authorities are pursuing additional charges against some of the suspects. The charges
range from production of methamphetamine
to poaching.
Red is one of the five brothers currently being held in Wise County Jail.
“We’re like the Indians,” Red said. “It’s the
same situation. We’re being pushed out. We
respect the land. There are a lot of people
that don’t respect God’s land.”
Game wardens are pursuing poaching
charges against the Malone brothers.
In the past, whenever they hunted on the
property of old timers, Red said they would
help a cow stuck in a creek if they found it,

RAIN OR SHINE — Roy Eaton has been the voice of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo parade for more than 40 years. He said the allwestern parade has only been canceled twice, and he’s manned the grandstand in all types of weather.
Voice of the show
For more than 40 years, Roy Eaton has announced the Fort Worth Stock Show
By KRISTEN TRIBE
Heifers swished their tails nervously in
the arena, ready to retire to their stalls for
the day, and a quiet chatter hummed in the
stands. The judge surveyed the cattle one
last time, and camera flashes sparkled almost in sync as parents aimed at their kids
in the arena below.
Quietly stationed in the show ring – announcer Roy Eaton of Decatur. He is heard
but not often seen at the Fort Worth Stock
Show and Rodeo.
“My job is to be invisible and make the
kids the stars,” he said. “You have really
dyed-in-the-wool, educated cattle people (in
the audience) and people who just walked in
looking for a place to sit and rest, so you try
to explain what’s going on.”
Eaton, retired publisher of the Wise County Messenger, has lent his voice to the stock
show for more than 40 years. He’s been the
announcer for the stock show parade since
the late 1960s, and he has announced the
livestock shows for more than 20 years.
“His voice is soothing, and
it’s pleasant to listen to,” said
Shanna Weaver, publicity
manager. “But it gets everySee more online:
one’s attention and keeps it.

He never lets anything rattle
or upset him. He always has the same laidback, friendly attitude.”
Eaton helps kick off the stock show at the
annual western parade that winds through
downtown. No motorized vehicles are allowed. All entrants must walk, ride a horse
or ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
Eaton’s job is to announce and introduce
each one as it passes the grandstand, and
while it sounds simple enough, he said the
parade is his hardest job. There are about
200 entries in the parade every year, and
although Weaver said the first 30 or 40 entries are usually in order, it dissolves into
“organized chaos.”
Entrants switch places along the route,
outriders get separated from their groups,
and there is general confusion, which sometimes makes it hard to know who should be
announced next.
But she said, if anything ever does go
wrong or something out of the ordinary happens, “you hardly see it because Roy is so
calm and collected.”
Livestock show manager Stefan Marchman said Eaton is “so professional, and you
can’t catch him off guard.”
“When he’s working, you can bring him
any issue, and he can modify something …

or fix somebody’s fence. In
a sense, they would look after the land while they were
hunting on it. In return, landowners didn’t mind them
hunting on their property.
“Landowners now are
more into the dollar than
taking care of their fences
and cattle,” said James A.
Malone, 50.
The brothers’ native, rugged ways don’t fit into the
confines of modern society.
“Society just eats you,”
James said. “It’s like a cancer. Society wants to take everything real out of the world
and insert the synthetic. If it
ain’t plastic or rubber nobody
wants it.”
The Malone brother’s opposition to the synthetic
world presents an irony
when matched against the
allegations of synthesizing
methamphetamine.
There are also allegations
of holding deer captive in
cages, which is a wildlife violation.
“We’d see a doe hit by a car,
dead on the side of the road,”
James said. “The fawn would
be hiding and starving in the
woods nearby. We’d catch it
and take care of it.
“Over the past 30 years
we’ve raised and released a
lot of deer. We’ve saved lots
of animals.”
James said they always let
the deer roam free on their
land to avoid a violation.
Costs of addiction
Allegations against the
Malones include drug production. Red admits to
struggling with methamphetamine addiction. But
after dealing with the pain it
has caused in his own life, he
said he would never produce
it or sell it to anybody else.
Meth addiction has cost
Red a lot. He said he first
used meth many years ago
when he worked in the oil
fields. It helped him stay
alert and awake during long
shifts. But it eventually
played a role in the divorce
from his wife and losing custody of his children.
“I lost my wife and my son
and my daughter,” Red said.
“God puts you here to fulfill
certain roles. I was the worst
after that, after I lost my
role as father, when I had no
one to love or hold. It filled
the void when all I had was
taken from me.
“It gives you energy. You
have power when you have
it, and when it’s gone you
feel an emptiness,” he explained. “You don’t wanna
go nowhere or do nothing.
It becomes your friend. And
there’s nothing like a best
friend.”
He regrets allowing the
drug into his life. He admits
he would be a better person
today if he hadn’t.
“I’m not proud of it,” he
said. “No more than an alcoholic is proud of that. We are
victims of it. It has caused
the destruction of our family.
“Because I’m doing it
doesn’t mean I believe in it.
It’s not rebellion. It’s sadness that made me the way
I am.”
Red said he’s tried to break
the habit, but loneliness,
grief and negative influences
kept reeling him back in.
Last summer he and
James journeyed to the wild
mountains of Colorado to live
free off the land. It was an
attempt to leave old habits
behind. But food was scarce
and they eventually grew
“dog hungry.”
“We stayed up there for
two months, looking for
gold, searching for sanity,”
Red said. “If we’d found it
we wouldn’t be behind these
bars ... We’re gonna be totally
destroyed if we don’t get out
of here. God is in the woods.”

O’ BROTHER — Bryan “Red” Malone denies any involvement in organized criminal activity
or drug production. He wants the brother or brothers who might be responsible to come
forward.
It’s not rebellion. It’s sadness that made
me the way I am.

Production allegations
Meth is produced at different strengths. Chad Lanier, sergeant investigator
with Wise County Sheriff’s
Department, said the type
allegedly being produced at
the Malone property is referred to as “Nazi meth.”
“This is the same type of
meth given to Nazi soldiers
during World War II to help
them fight for days on end,”
Lanier said.
Red said he kept mostly to
himself, so he can’t comment
specifically on what was or
wasn’t being produced at the
property.
“I love my brothers,” Red
said, “but I don’t agree with
all the things some of them
have done.”
James shared a similar
sentiment.
CRIME
WCMESS.COM/CRIMERING
“Some of it, I don’t agree
with what was going on,”
James said. “But some of
them need to step up and
say what the hell was going
on. I don’t know who was doing what or whatever, but I
know what I was doing.”
During the raid on the
home, officers did not arrest
the mother, Wilda Malone,
73.
“I can’t tell you anything
other than their mother is
a wonderful person,” said
Tammy Malone, 42. “She
has done everything she can
to help us. I far as I can tell,
she’s done everything she
can to help her boys.”
Tammy was one of those
arrested during the Jan. 28
raid. Tammy married Benny
Malone, 42, about a year ago.
They held the ceremony at
the Malone property. Investigators have alleged that
Benny was the ringleader.
Investigators said they
do have evidence of Tammy
and Benny purchasing large
amounts of pseudoephedrine
over a period of time. It is
found in cold medicines and
used to process methamphetamine.
WILD LIFE
— James
Malone
denies
committing
wildlife violations or any
involvement
in organized
criminal
activities.
He takes
an ecological, wildlife
management
approach to
nature.
Messenger photo
by Joe Duty
“Since we’ve been married,
Benny has changed a whole
lot,” Tammy said. “He started hanging out with different people.”
Wilda’s late husband,
Gene, built their home when
the Malone brothers were
just boys. He taught them
the ways of the woods and
how to live off the land. He
died in 2005, at the age of 71,
while on a bear-hunting trip
in Colorado.
The alleged crimes against
the brothers might cost Wilda
her home. The state is pursuing seizure of the property.
Tammy admits she needs
to make some serious changes and get her life in order,
but she denies the charges of
engaging in organized criminal activity.
“I’m gonna straighten up
and do right,” she said. “I
decided its time I live right
by God and do what I’m supposed to do as a person.
“I’m not organized in my
own life. How can I organize
any crime?” she asked.
Red and James also denied
participation in organized
criminal activities.
“They say we’re organized
crime, but some of those people I don’t even know,” Red
said.
The five Malone brothers,
Benny, Kevin, Red, James
and Bobby, and Tammy were
arrested during the raid. As
many as 12 others were arrested elsewhere in connection with the operation.
Frozen in time
Investigators discovered
a deep hole covered with
a camouflage tarp at the
Malone property. They believed it might have been
used for drug production.
But Red said it was never
used for that purpose.
“There’s eight years of
solid tears in that hole,” Red
said. “When I got a divorce,
and they took my kids away,
I went down in that hole
and started digging. That’s
where I cried.”
Red is fascinated with fossils. He’s spent many days
digging up old dinosaur
and mammoth fossils in the
woods and creeks of Wise
County with his son. When
he started digging into the
earth there at his property,
he thought he was uncovering a dinosaur bone. The
bone turned out to be the
roots of a petrified tree. It
opened up and created an
underground cavern.
He kept digging deeper
and deeper. He painted the
sandy walls. They solidified
into a hard rock.
He admits there might be
some paraphernalia down
there, but that hole was his
sanctuary. It was sacred.
“There was no intention
of making dope down in
that hole,” Red said. “It was
someplace for us to go and
get away from the world. Get
away from the problems.”
Like a fossil from a bygone era secured deep in
the sediment, he used the
hole to hide from the ways
of the world. But the winds
of today eroded the surface,
revealing a lifestyle out of
sync with modern society.

Perry proposes two-thirds vote for tax increases
By DAVE MCNEELY
Gov. Rick Perry is trying to make
it harder to pay for programs in
Texas.
Perry has proposed that Texas
copy California and amend its constitution to require any proposed
tax increase get a two-thirds vote
in the Texas House and Senate to
become law.
The Senate is already on the
two-thirds program, for the most
part. Senate tradition of the last
half century or so requires a twothirds vote to bring a bill up on the
Senate floor. Once on the floor, a
simple majority can pass it.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has
wired around that two-thirds
requirement on redistricting bills
and on requiring a picture ID to
vote.
The House requires only a majority vote to bring up and pass a
bill.
In California, the two-thirds
requirement for new taxes has
gummed up the governmental
works, giving a conservative, antitax minority the ability to block
just about any thoughtful ways to
meet the state’s needs.
That anti-tax fervor has also
undermined what once was argu-

system.

als don’t require the governor’s
an amendment to allow the tax
signature, nor can he veto them.
That didn’t stop Perry from stag- – an almost insurmountable task,
which would be the case under
ing a “signing” of a property rights
Perry’s proposal. Under Bullock’s
amendment proposal – in front
scenario, a simple majority in each
of the Alamo, no less – to require
house can put a referendum on
a two-thirds vote in the House
the ballot, rather than requiring
two-thirds.

GOP Runoff?
Medina apparently gained some
traction as a result of getting into
two TV debates. Hutchison is
predicting Medina will get enough
votes to throw the race into an
April 13 runoff. (A Rasmussen
Poll Feb. 1 of questionable robocall methodology, showed Perry at
44 percent Hutchison at 29 and
Medina at 16.)
Hutchison encouraged members
of the Texas Farm Bureau, which
endorsed her, to follow through by
getting as many other people as
they can out to vote for her in the
primary.
She’s also turning up the heat a
notch. On Feb. 2, she blasted Perry
three years after his abortive effort
in 2007 to enforce an executive
order to require girls in their early
teens to be vaccinated against the
human papilloma virus, or HPV.
Legislators, saying Perry was intruding on parental rights, quickly
shot the idea down, and outlawed
enforcement of the order until at
least Jan. 11, 2011. Hutchison intimated that it came about because
of a favorite Perry lobbyist, friend
and former employee.
“Three years ago today, Rick
Perry ordered all sixth-grade girls
in Texas to get the HPV vaccine
shot,” Hutchison told the Dallas
County Republican Women at
their monthly meeting.
“It was no coincidence that a
former Perry chief-of-staff was a
lobbyist for the company that manufactured the vaccine,” Hutchison
said, referring to Mike Toomey,
who served with Perry in the Texas
House, and who left the lobby for a
couple years to head Perry’s staff
before going back to the lobby.
Perry said in the second debate
Jan. 29 that he still thinks the
HPV inoculation is a good idea.
!
Dallas Public TV station KERA
will host a debate at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, between Democratic
gubernatorial candidates Farouk
Shami and former Houston Mayor
Bill White. It’ll be broadcast statewide on various media, including
the Internet.
Left out of the talk-fab were five
other candidates: Alma Aguado,
Felix Alvarado, Bill Dear, Clement
Glenn and Star Locke.

Outdoor experience
was successful
On Jan. 26, the fourth grade students
from Carson Elementary experienced an
archeology-based field day at Black Creek
Lake Recreation Area, LBJ Grasslands.
The success of this event was dependent of
people in the community who volunteered
their time and/or materials.
We express our appreciation and gratitude to the U.S. Forest Service employees
who were involved: Jim Crooks, David
Weldon, Scott Siebert and Rebecca Knapp;
to historian Kerry Clower for speaking on
the history of the Wise County area; to all
the parents who volunteered to chaperone;
and to Colleen Bocanegra and Julie Duty
for helping gather the needed materials.
Thank you for making this a successful
outdoor learning experience.

Consider your
actions and vote
As we get closer to the Primary on March
2, I am very aware that people are becoming more aware of the candidates that are
running for the two positions in Precinct 3
for Commissioner and Justice of the Peace.
As a Candidate for Justice of the Peace,
I have spent my own money to run for
an elected position that I feel so strongly
about.
To whoever came to my house when no
one was home and destroyed one of my
large, 4x4 campaign signs by punching a
hole in it and forcing it over my mail box
and destroying the sign even more – this is
not the right way to express who you may
want or not want as your next justice of the
peace.
And now someone is pulling up my 4x4
signs with the T-post attached.
It is a sad time to think that someone
must stoop to such measures to prevent
someone, who they may not want as a
candidate, from having their signs out for
people to see. Such acts are both unethical and illegal by destroying or removing
campaign signs.
I ask the individual who feels so strongly
that they express themselves on March
2 when they vote and not by committing
criminal offenses.

Vote for
Rob Hawkins
I attended Bridgeport Elementary School
with Bobby Hawkins. He was an entertaining and enthusiastic young man. He could
sing and dance and was well liked by all
students.
The Hawkins family took care of the
funeral of my mother’s father as well as
many of my relatives. Bobby Hawkins
personally took care of the funeral of my
father, Clyde Matney. I was pleased to
learn that Bobby was later elected mayor
of Bridgeport.
I also served as a mayor. I was mayor of
the city of Huntington Beach, Calif., which
is a city of about 200,000 people. Because
of that experience and 11 years in elected
office, I think I know what it takes to be an
elected official.
I met Rob Hawkins when he became a
friend of my brother, Jimmy Matney. When
my brother passed away last January, Rob
took personal charge of his funeral services
and did a wonderful job.
Rob is intelligent, personable and a great
communicator. These characteristics are
a must for a successful elected official.
Because of these factors I humbly and sincerely endorse Rob Hawkins for the office
of Wise County Commissioner, Precinct 2.
I urge all of my old family friends in Wise
County to cast your vote for Rob Hawkins.
Jerry A. Matney

Wise help is headed to Haiti
By MANDY BOURGEOIS
Sean Gipson has annually
traveled to Haiti the past
four years with a Christian
medical mission serving a
village outside of the capital,
Port-au-Prince.
But on Friday, Gipson,
owner of Sleep Specialties
at Wise Regional Health
System, left for Haiti on a
mission much different from
previous trips. As a member
of a volunteer medical team,
Gipson will spend the next
week in a Haitian hospital
helping victims of the Jan.
12 earthquake that claimed
an estimated 200,000 lives
and injured scores of people.
Gipson expects the work
to be “hectic,” with long days
seeing many patients.
“It’s still crazy. I don’t believe it will ever be a smooth
ride in terms of being prepared to see what you’re going to see,” he said. “The process now has gone more from
a trauma aspect to more of a
lifesaving effort. A lot of what
we’re doing are amputations
and lots of casting and surgical repair for broken bones,
wound cleaning and irrigation, surgery to address infections. We’re dealing with
infection and repair.”
Gipson said that his team
of 22 is prepared to work
from 14 to 16 hours a day,
seeing anywhere from five to
20 patients. The team is also
bringing crucial supplies to
Haiti, collected at various
locations, including Wise Regional. Gipson said doctors
in Haiti need very basic supplies.
“Sutures, general bandaging, IV tubing and fluids
— they are going through
medical supplies like crazy,”
he said. “The only way I can
explain to people how to
think about that is, imagine
if you walked out the door
this morning and you turn
around and there’s nothing there — that’s what you
need. These are folks that
are used to not living with a
lot already.”
After a week, Gipson will
return to his home in Corinth
near Denton for four days,
then make another trip to
Haiti.
“I’ll have time to make
sense of the world again, a
couple of days to hang out
with the family and time
to wash my scrubs,” Gipson
said.
Gipson’s family – wife, Michelle, 15-year-old son and
12- and 5-year-old daughters
– are supportive of his work
in Haiti.
“When (the earthquake)
happened, within half a day
we decided that I had to go
down there and check on
my mission,” he said. “(Michelle’s) response was, you
have to do what you feel is
best. She’s completely supportive of me going out
there.”
After his second trip, he
will return to prepare a team
of volunteers from Wise Regional for a week in Haiti.
Wise Regional Health
System will continue to be
a drop-off point for supplies
for Haiti. Supplies needed
include clothing, shoes, home
medical supplies, walkers,
wheelchairs, canes, bottled
water, mosquito netting, linens and blankets.
Donations can be taken to
the West Campus back door
and a tax-deductible receipt
will be provided by personnel. Call (940) 626-4095
for West Campus Security
when you plan to make the
donation.

P&Z denies sidewalk variance request
Decatur Planning and Zoning Commission recommended commercial zoning for
a planned CVS Pharmacy at Business 380
and U.S. 81/287 Tuesday. However the commission denied a variance request to eliminate a sidewalk.
If the city council upholds the denial, a
sidewalk will be built along the west edge
of the property, which is the service road for
northbound U.S. 81/287.
The sidewalk would run south from near
the corner of Business 380 and the 81/287
service road to the end of the CVS property.
The next property to the south, Braum’s,
has no sidewalk.
CVS was previously awarded a variance
in the setback on the east side. The building
will face north, with a drive through on the
southwest corner.
Approval was also given for a plat for the
Plaza Cinema property off FM 51 South,
which is planned for expansion.
Curtis Creswell said work should begin
soon on the project, which would take 3-4
months. It will result in a new entrance that
faces west, stadium style seating and new
and renovated theaters. Restrooms, concession and parking would also be upgraded.
The commission welcomed new member
Lisa Estrada and chose Jerry Watson to
serve as chairman and Bob Bastian as vice
chairman. One vacancy remains.

he’s real good about ad-libbing and presenting it so it sounds good on the microphone. It’s pretty amazing.”
This year Eaton announced 19 shows,
and he always makes it a priority to announce the name of each exhibitor and
their association (4-H or FFA) as they enter the ring. He also introduces the judges
and gives a short biography of each. At
the end of the class, he announces the top
places as they exit the arena.
This is more complicated than it sounds
because there are usually two classes going

and coming out,” said Richard Flynt of Decatur. “We’ve had announcers that couldn’t keep up.”
Flynt and Tom Woodward, also of Decatur, are superintendents of the junior heifer show and have worked with Roy in
the arena most of the last 20 years.
“One of the things we’ve tried to focus on is making (the
stock show) a pleasant experience for people. Any time there
are that many kids, parents, trucks and trailers, there will
be inconvenience. What you don’t need is an inconvenient
person (working the show),” said Woodward. “Whether they
win or not, we want them to say they had a great time in
Fort Worth.
“So Roy is a part of that because of his style and attitude.”
Eaton said even after all these years, he still gets nervous
because he is focused on getting every detail right.
“There can be tons of confusion around you, but you make
it run smooth,” he said.
Flynt said he wishes everyone he worked with was like
Eaton.
“He’s just a good guy,” he said. “I never know what (the announcers’) schedule is, but it always makes me smile when I
see he’s there because I know it’s going to run right.”
Marchman said although Eaton “never stubs his toe or has
an issue,” a slight misstep resulted in some good-natured
ribbing this year.
Every morning the show is opened with a prayer by a 4-H
or FFA member, and another student leads the crowd in the
Pledge of Allegiance. Then the National Anthem is played.
“I look at Roy … and he’s pledging the Texas flag,” said
Flynt. “When he realized it, he didn’t make a big deal about
it. He just did a low-key shuffle, you know, just some baby
steps, so he was facing the right flag. We made sure he knew
that we saw him.”
Wise
County
Eaton said he’s continued to work at
the stock show because he enjoys the atmosphere and has made friends with people over the years. He even feels like he’s
watched many kids grow up from his post
at the announcer’s stand as they start in
the junior show and eventually move on
to the open show as adults.
“It’s just different than what I do in
my everyday life,” said Eaton, who was
elected to the stock show board of directors last year.
Weaver said people like Eaton have
seen the show grow and change through
the years, and their tenure has given
them an appreciation for the history and
significance of particular events.
“It would be different if he was just on
the board and came to one meeting a year,
but he’s embedded in the stock show,” said Weaver.
“He’s involved in so many aspects and has experience in so
many areas. And you can’t put a price tag on that.”

What is a fable? The great man of truth, the apostle
Paul, warned in his writings, “The time will come when
they (religionist) will not endure sound doctrine…But will turn away
their ears from the truth and shall be turned into fables” (2nd Tim
4:3-4). The basic meaning of the original word fable is: fiction, a tale,
an invented story. This spirit is carried by the anti-Christ, the deceivers,
the false prophets and workers on the broad road that Jesus warned
about. Here is a great warning that only the true church, the sheep,
will take heed to. Jesus commanded, do we hear him? “Enter ye at
the straight gate: for wide is the gate (room for many)and broad is the
Way, which leadeth to destruction and many therein. Narrow is the way,
which leadeth to life, and few there be that find it. Beware (take heed
danger lies near) of false prophets (fable carriers) which appear in
sheep’s clothing (Christianity fakes) but inwardly (mind set) they are
ravening wolves” (Math 7:13-15). Those traveling on the broad way do
so because it is so easy, they spend little or no time in the study of the
scriptures. They take no heed to Jesus continual warnings, they fail to
recognize the true workers of God and Jesus Christ. So unknowing in
willful ignorance they join their fellow travelers driving to rejection and
destruction which lies at the DEAD END. The trinity teaching is either
truth or a fable. See if you can find the word trinity in the Bible. “There
is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the
ways of death” (Prov 14:12). Call for Bible Study times.

Director of development
Ashley Smalley had little
new construction to report
at Tuesday’s Bridgeport
City Council meeting, but
said that inquiries were up,
and city staff hope to see increased action in the following months.
Smalley said that the city
had no new residential construction or residential certificates of occupancy in the
first quarter of the fiscal year
that began Oct. 1. However,
one new commercial project,
Spirit Ice, was under way
in December and seven certificates of occupancy were
filed for existing structures
in the first quarter.
Compared to the first
quarter of the last fiscal
year, permits were down
from 73 to 69. However, fees
were down by 56 percent,
with permits reflecting the
remodeling trend rather
than the previous new-construction trend.
Residential remodeling is
down by 6 percent compared
to the first quarter of last
fiscal year, but commercial
remodeling is up by 98 percent.

WISE COUNTY
The country is gearing up for the 2010 census, and a force
of census workers, volunteers and community leaders has
been mobilized across the nation in order to get a complete
count.
Locally, “Complete Count” committees have been formed
in Decatur, Bridgeport, New Fairview and Rhome and partnerships in all incorporated areas of Wise County. The committees are charged with encouraging citizens to participate in this year’s census.
Ashley Smalley, director of development services at the
city of Bridgeport and head of the Bridgeport Complete
Count Committee, said that the final population tally affects funding for various grants and programs offered to the
city and school district.
“If you have 6,000 people to support, and only 4,000 participating in the census, then you aren’t maximizing the
support you can have per capita,” she said. “There’s several
billion dollars available in grants that are based on population.”
Smalley began communicating with the Census Bureau
last spring, and the Complete Count Committee of business and community leaders was formed in the summer.
The committee, which split into several subcommittees, will
provide information to citizens through flyers in city utility
bills, as well as flyers sent home with schoolchildren.
Decatur’s Complete Count committee, led by director of
the planning department Dedra Ragland, said that the
committee is waiting on grant funding from the Census Bureau to provide for T-shirts and flyers. The committee plans
to be involved in Main Street events occurring through the
census process.
NEWS BRIEFS
“Our committee separated into four different groups and
each one came up with several projects they wanted to participate in,” Ragland said.
The Census Bureau will have an employee stationed in a
city office from March 19 through April 19 to answer questions and help fill out forms.
The Census Bureau is hiring temporary census workers
for the process, with jobs ranging from eight weeks to several months and a pay scale from $8 to $24 an hour. For job
information, visit http://2010census.gov/2010censusjobs/ or
call 1-866-861-2010 to schedule an appointment for an aptitude test.
In 2000, Wise County had a 63 percent mail response rate,
including responses returned by phone and Internet. The
Census Bureau estimated a 19.9 percent change in population from 2000 to 2008 in Wise County.
In an effort to increase response rates across the nation,
the Census Bureau will debut a shorter questionnaire. In
2000, the questionnaire had 57 questions for the first person in the household, and 32 questions for each additional
person. This year, the head of the household will answer 10
questions, and additional people will answer seven questions.

Planners of the Wise County Community Health Fair are still seeking
volunteers and vendors.
The health fair is scheduled for
April. It will be held at the Decatur
Civic Center. Members of the Wise
County Health Group are organizing
the event.
Toni Schmalzried said volunteers are
needed to greet people at the door and
to provide information on the services
and programs offered at the fair. They
are looking for more vendors.
The fair already features a host of
displays and health services, ranging
from a snake exhibit by Texas Parks
and Wildlife Department to schoolrequired immunizations and various
health screenings.
“All the screenings lined up will
make this very helpful for people,” said
Martin Woodruff, chair of Wise County
Health Group.
At last year’s fair, Woodruff said several visitors discovered serious health
issues thanks to the free screenings
and tests provided.

Sissies make playoffs
Four new starters help Bridgeport seal berth
By RICHARD GREENE
Surrounded by four new
starters, Bridgeport junior
post Haley Meekins never
doubted that her team would
get back to the playoffs.
With their 59-36 victory
over Wichita Falls Hirschi
Tuesday, the Bridgeport Sissies secured their postseason
basketball bid.
“We expected it,” Meekins
said. “We knew we could do
it. It just took a lot of hard
work.”
Bridgeport entered Friday’s
game with Decatur with a
chance to still create a threeway logjam at the top of the
District 5-3A standings. The

nett to create the three-way
tie with Iowa Park and Burkburnett.
“We still have a chance to
tie for first,” said Bridgeport
varsity girls coach Eddie
Fortenberry. “Our goal is to
mess this thing up.”
While his players were confident about their chances of
securing back-to-back playoff
appearances for the first time
since 2005-06 at the end of a
three-year run, Fortenberry
knew it wouldn’t be easy.
“I thought it would be
hard to get the third spot,”
the coach said. “We lost the
best kids in the district. It’s
a credit to these kids and the
work they put in. It goes to
show that winning breeds
winning.”
Fortenberry didn’t make it
easy on his essentially new
team early in the season,
putting together a tough nondistrict schedule that included state-ranked Springtown
and Fort Worth Christian.
Bridgeport started the season 5-4.
“I was worried it was wearing us down,” Fortenberry
said. “You never know how
a younger group is going to
handle it. They realized they
had to get better. It would not
have done us any good to play
an easy schedule.”
After her strong sophomore
season, teams began the year
determined to slow Meekins.

Lamirand hits six
3-pointers in win
By RICHARD GREENE
The Vernon Lions are probably glad to know that the
Decatur Eagles and sophomore shooting guard Austin
Lamirand will be switching
to a new district next year.
In two games this season
against Vernon, Lamirand
has drilled 15 3-pointers. He
nailed six Tuesday night on
his way to scoring a gamehigh 22 points in Decatur’s
75-51 victory over Vernon at
Decatur High School Gym.
“That’s crazy!” said Decatur varsity boys coach Roger
Brown. “He can shoot.”
Lamirand joked after the
game: “I like playing them.”
The victory lightened the
spirits of the entire Decatur
team which ended a threegame losing streak with the
win to even its District 5-3A
record at 3-3.
“We needed it after losing
like we did last night,” Lamirand said. “We needed it to
be ready for Bridgeport Friday.”
Decatur dropped its makeup game against the 11thranked Burkburnett Bulldogs Monday 83-64. Playing
back-to-back games, Brown
thought his team showed
some toughness in the win
against Vernon.
“I think we did a really
good job for what we went
through last night,” Brown
said. “We executed pretty
good. We have to continue to
work on our defense and at
stopping penetration.
“But we needed to get a
win. Even more than playing good, we needed a win,”
he said.
Lamirand was one of four
Decatur players in double
figures. Trey Hale scored 16.
Ross Walker had 14. Caleb
Hogan finished with 12.
Vernon hung with Decatur
early, trailing by just nine,
20-11, after the first quarter.
The Decatur lead stood at
10, 30-20, at halftime.
Lamirand and the Eagles
then exploded in the second
half. He drained five of his
six 3-pointers in the second
half.

Bridgeport senior defensive back Kyle Parker
added another honor to
his banner season Friday.
The Bull was named to
the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class

The honor followed his
selection to the Associat-

in December.
As a senior, Parker set
the Bridgeport record
with his nine interceptions. He also established
a school record with 13
in his career.
Parker also was in on
87 tackles.
After the season, the
defensive back was selected as a 5-3A firstteam defensive back.
With Parker roaming
the secondary, Bridgeport finished the season
7-5 and advanced to the
third round of the playoffs before falling to the

NAIL-BITING TIME — Alvord senior Jennifer Ward is one of three Lady Bulldog seniors hoping to land a playoff berth after the team missed the
postseason last year.
One more to move on
Lady Bulldogs take chances at getting to playoffs
By RICHARD GREENE
After a loss to Boyd ended the Alvord Lady Bulldogs’ season last year without a playoff berth, Jennifer Ward had a hard time controlling her emotions.
“I bawled,” the now-senior post said. “I cried that
night as I was putting the basketball shoes in the
box. We took it hard.”
That disappointment fueled an intense offseason of
work for Ward and the rest of the Lady Bulldogs to
make sure they didn’t have a repeat of last year.
The Alvord varsity girls team entered Friday’s showdown with Millsap with a chance to seal a playoff bid.
The Lady Bulldogs (19-9, 8-4), who held a game lead
on Millsap for third place in District 9-2A, could also
earn a trip to postseason with a win Tuesday over
Boyd and a Millsap loss to second-place Peaster.
“It’s going to be tough, especially with the teams we
have to play,” said Alvord girls coach Rob Schmucker
about securing the playoff bid.
The Lady Bulldogs say they are up to the challenge.
“This is all we’ve talked about since last year,” said
senior post Marley Moyers. “We’ve worked all summer for this opportunity. We just have to stay loose
and have fun. It’s going to be tough and a dogfight.”
Alvord beat Millsap in their first meeting by a point,
40-39. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead in the third
quarter and held off Millsap off in the final frame.
“We match up good with them offensively,” Schmucker said. “We can go big and cause them some trouble.
Defensively, we had a hard time matching up. They
do some things offensively that hurt us.”
He urged his team to get off to a fast start.
“You know they are going to come out excited.
We have to match it over the first three minutes,”
Schmucker said.
Alvord was expected to be without shooting guard
Amber Greer Friday.
Regardless of Friday’s outcome, the Lady Bulldogs
are not expecting to let up Tuesday against Wise
County rival Boyd.
“If we win Friday, Tuesday we can go in relaxed but
we’ve got to finish what we started,” Ward said.
Schmucker is urging his team to keep the foot on
the pedal to build some momentum, if they do secure
the playoff bid.
“Everyone is saying we’ve just got to win one more,
but I want to win both games,” Schmucker said. “We
don’t want to lose something before getting to the
playoffs.”
If and when Alvord secures a playoff bid, Moyers
and Ward said it will be an emotional evening.
“We’re going to cry either way,” Moyers said.
Schmucker wants to see his team finish the job.
“They’ve worked hard for this and deserve it,”
Schmucker said. “I hope they make the playoffs for
the seniors. Not just make it, but do something.”

record intact Tuesday
night, rolling to a 90-34

first quarter and never
slowed. Brock built the
lead to 50-13 at halftime.
Brock added to its
advantage in the third

Lady Eagles shoot down Vernon, 53-36
By RICHARD GREENE
In their first meeting with the
Vernon Lady Lions in January,
the Decatur Lady Eagles lost after
not capitalizing on opportunities
around the basket.
Decatur cashed in on those chances Tuesday night in a 53-36 victory
at Decatur High School Gym.
Relentlessly attacking the basket
throughout the game, Decatur shot
44 percent, 19-for-43, from the field.
“That’s what we talked about before the game,” said Decatur varsity
girls coach Billy Garner. “They gave
us every opportunity at their place,
but we didn’t finish.”
The victory was Decatur’s second
in the past two games after getting
off to a 0-5 start in District 5-3A.
“I’m proud of them,” Garner said.
“They keep playing hard and keep
improving. Sometimes it’s difficult
to do that after the losses they’ve
had, but they keep playing hard.”
Thanks to a big second quarter
by Jordan Alker, Decatur kept the
score tied at 22. Alker, who finished
with 12, put in seven in the quar-
ter. She went 5-for-6 from the freethrow line.
After halftime, Vernon jumped in
front with back-to-back 3-pointers
to take a 30-26 lead with 4:50 left in
the third quarter. Decatur responded with an 11-3 run to get a 37-33
lead going into the fourth quarter.
Macie Danie, who led all the scorers with 16 points, made six during
the third quarter.
“It was good we were able to drive
the lane and the shots were falling,”
Dane said. “We were prepared for
this game. We fixed a lot of our mis-
takes from last time.”
Vernon closed back within two in
the opening moments of the final
frame. Alker then hit a 3-pointer
to start a 16-1 run to the end the
game. Five Decatur players scored
during the closing rally.
Vernon’s lone point in the final
7:35 was a free throw with 26 seconds to go.
Jaci Isham and Mercy Staley
scored seven each for the Lady Eagles. Brooke Fincher added six and
Rachael Smyers four. Kelsy Garner
chipped in one.

to put Decatur back up 10, 36-26.
Walker’s shot started a 21-5 run by
Decatur to close the third quarter
and open up a 54-31 lead.
Decatur continued to pull away
in the fourth quarter. After Lamirand and Kyle Durdon hit 3-pointers, Nick Linder made a pair of free
throws to close a 10-0 spurt midway
through the fourth as Decatur built
its largest lead, 33 points, 70-37.
With the game out of hand, Vernon scored the contest’s final eight
points.
Vernon was led by Perez with 19.
Kyle Green finished with six for
Decatur. Durdon had three and
Linder two.
In
a
double-overtime
thriller, the Jacksboro Lady
Tigers outlasted the Boyd
Lady Yellowjackets Tuesday
night.
Jacksboro outscored Boyd
10-7 in the second extra
frame to pull out the 70-67
victory.
Boyd varsity girls coach
Lynn Cranfill said it was
an exciting, tough game
throughout.
“In the end missed free
throws (15) and turnovers
(22) were the difference,” he
said.
The game featured 46
fouls and 74 free throws.
Jacksboro locked down on
Boyd guard Jessica Drake,
holding her without a point
in the first half. Boyd was
still able to grab a 23-22
halftime lead.
Drake came alive after
halftime, scoring 22. She hit
eight of her 13 shots with
three 3-pointers. She has 87
for the year.
“Jessica was the X factor,”
Cranfill said. “She was amazing. She was being guarded
like an escaped prisoner, but
when we got her shots, she
hit them.”
Behind Drake, Boyd took
a 39-35 lead into the fourth
quarter. Jacksboro fought
back to get the game tied.
Boyd need its lone senior,
Keenan Burgin, to go 4-for4 from the line down the
stretch to force overtime.
Burgin finished with 12
points, going 8-for-10 from
the line.
In the first overtime, both
teams scored seven. With
the game tied at 60, it went
to another overtime.
Joining Drake and Burgin
in double figures for Boyd
were Shelbi Tidwell with 14
and Jenny Hardcopf with
10. Tidwell finished with six
rebounds, and Hardcopf had

Chelsea Landes scored six

Bridgeport’s Scott inks with Angelo

By RICHARD GREENE
For the past two years,
Bridgeport’s Daniel Scott has
terrorized opposing offenses
from his defensive-end spot.
He will now get the same
opportunity in the Lone Star
Conference. Scott signed his
letter of intent Wednesday to
play football at Angelo State
University.
Scott picked the NCAA
Division II school over Tarleton.
“It came down to Angelo
and Tarleton, but it was an
easy decision when the Tarleton coach left the day before signing day,” Scott said.
“I liked everything about
Angelo. It all worked out like
it should. I’m excited about
going there. It’s a little surreal.”
The Bull was one of 30

“He was an outstanding
player for us,” said Bridgeport coach Danny Henson.
“Every year, he kept getting
better and better. He had a
great junior year and was a
huge force in the defensive
line.”
Scott was a major part of
Bridgeport rescuing its season after a 1-4 start. The Bulls
went on to go undefeated in
District 5-3A and advance to
the third round of the Class
3A Division II playoffs.
“After losing a lot of people
after my junior year, I didn’t
know what to expect,” Scott
said. “We started off slow,
but everyone started buying
in and we turned it around.
This is a good way to cap my
high-school career.”
Scott is unsure how long
it will take him to get on the
field at San Angelo.
“They said they like to redshirt everyone,” Scott said.
“But they said the best guys
will play.”
Henson expects Scott to
have a successful career, but
he will have some work to
do.
“The big thing with the
transition to playing in college is he’ll have to get
heavier and learn to play at
the same level with more
weight,” Henson said. “He’s
got all the skills to be a great
player.”

Thomas signs letter with Northeastern
By RICHARD GREENE
While playing defensive
end and wide receiver for the
Decatur Eagles this season,
Ryan Thomas longed for a
chance to be a linebacker.
The graduating senior
will get that opportunity on
the collegiate level. Thomas
Wednesday inked a letter
of intent to play football at
Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla.
“I’ve always wanted to
play linebacker and now I’ll
get that opportunity,” Thomas said. “It’s exciting.”
Thomas is one of 18 freshmen signed by the school,
including several other Texans. He made a visit this
spring to the Tahlequah
campus.
“I really liked it there and
enjoyed the campus,” Thomas said.
Playing college football
has been a long-time goal
for the Eagle. Decatur football coach Kyle Story expects Thomas to excel on the
next level.
“If given a year or two to
develop, he should make a
good player for them,” Story
said. “He’ll need to add some
strength, but he’s got the aggressiveness and attitude.”
For Decatur this past year,
Thomas was an all-district
wide receiver and a secondteam 5-3A defensive lineman. On offense, he caught
nine passes for 133 yards
and a touchdown, while also
serving as a dominating
blocker.
Defensively, he recorded
36 tackles, including four for
losses and one interception.
“He’s been a good player for
us,” Story said. “He played
the rare, slash receiver and
defensive lineman. He had
good hands and was a good,
physical inside receiver. On
defense, he was always very
physical and made plays.”
Thomas (6-1, 205 pounds)
doesn’t expect the challenge
of switching positions to be
too difficult.
“I played it when I was
younger,” Thomas said.
He is expected to redshirt

their boys basketball playoff
hopes alive Tuesday night,
rallying from a late deficit to

48-47.
The Yellowjackets trailed by

Boyd was able to force turnovers late to get easy scoring

Jacksboro 13-5 in the final

“Our full-court pressure got
us back into the game,” said
Boyd varsity coach Oscar Hernandez. “I am very proud of
our reseliancy and the way we
found a way to win.”
The coach also pointed out
the work turned in by Travis
Williams on the defensive end
against Jacksboro’s 6-4 center
Kole Weldon.
“Williams did a nice job limiting Weldon to 15,” Hernandez
said. “The last game he had 20plus points.”
Williams also scored 10
