A single vision led to the creation of the intelligent
technology that powers the Prius:
How can we create a car that does more and

The Hybrid system is testament to what the
Prius is all about – innovation and leadership that
results in exceptional fuel economy and lower
CO2 emissions without leaving performance and
an exciting, powerful drive behind.
How Hybrid Works
Take all the advantages of a petrol engine and an
electric motor and create a new type of engine
that offers the best of both. That’s the principle
behind Hybrid. Petrol engines are inefficient at
low speeds. Electric cars have a limited range
due to the battery constraints. Hybrid solves this
by automatically switching between the petrol
engine and the electric motor when each is at its
best for maximum performance and efficiency.
Drive with Zero Petrol
At low speeds and in traffic, the Prius is powered
by the electric motor so no petrol is used and the
drive is extremely quiet. Even when the petrol engine
is engaged, the drive is still luxuriously quiet.

More Power to You
As the speed increases the petrol engine kicks
in to produce more power. When a sudden burst
of acceleration is needed, in overtaking for instance,
the power of the petrol engine combines with the
power of the electric motor to create a maximum
surge of power.
The petrol engine will also recharge the electric
motor’s battery at any speed if the charge level
requires it.
All this means that the Prius never needs to be
plugged in, has fuel economy better than a diesel
engine at 4.1 l /100 km*, goes from 0 –100 km/h in
10.4 seconds AND cuts CO2 emissions to 94 g/km.
Recharge Your Battery
At cruising speed, the petrol engine drives the
wheels and this motion recharges the electric
motor’s battery. When braking, the petrol engine
switches off and the car recaptures that energy
from the braking system to recharge the electric
motor’s battery.

The Prius achieved the best fuel efficiency in the world for a mass produced vehicle. The achievement represents part of Toyota
Motor Corporation’s numerous and ongoing efforts to improve fuel efficiency through advanced vehicle development.
The Prius now has a fuel efficiency which exceeds standards by more than 25% and emissions of both nitrogen oxides and
non-methane hydrocarbons have also been reduced to levels 75% lower than its 2005 predecessor.*

It’s all about maximising the joy of driving while creating as little
impact as possible.
The Prius is all about new innovative technologies that not only
enhance the driving experience but also keep the needs of
the environment firmly in mind. The sunroof of the Prius, which
was designed to house solar cells, is evidence of this spirit.
This ingenious idea uses the roof to harness the sun’s energy
to power the air conditioner and ventilation fan. The solar
ventilation system, which is a Toyota-first and the remote control
air conditioning system helps keep your vehicle cool whilst it’s
parked in scorching hot weather so that you can return to a
cool vehicle. This is done by using solar generated electricity to
discharge hot air from the interior to the outside cooling down
the vehicle so it can stay cool and pleasant even when parked
directly in the sun. The system also allows you to save on fuel
consumption because of the use of the solar energy. The end
result is that you can keep cool while making as little impact to
the environment and global warming as possible.
Toyota is serious about combating the problems associated with
waste tyres in the country and therefore has taken up its producer
responsibility as defined by the new Waste Tyre Management Act
of 2008.

At low speeds and in traffic when only
the electric motor is in use, the drive
is incredibly quiet.
Serene and elegant yet crammed with mindblowing
technology and “smart” space, the interior of the
Prius stays true to its hybrid spirit by delivering
the best of both worlds.
The Prius is definitely an all round five star vehicle,
and to prove this it has a remote air conditioning
system, which uses electricity from the HV battery to
remotely activate the compressor motor and operate
the cooling system while the vehicle is turned off.
The remote air conditioning system activates the
cooling system in the vehicle even when outside by
simply clicking the button on the remote, this keeps
the vehicle’s temperature cool so that the occupants
can come back to a cool vehicle.
The Prius is roomy enough to seat five with lots
of legroom yet has lots of small, custom-built
spaces for everyday things like sunglasses, coffee
cups and CDs. The “smart” space design means
that the seats can fold down into four different
configurations to make the space flexible enough
to hold everything a family needs, from groceries
to luggage to golf bags.

So, with these things in mind, the Prius delivers pure
bliss with its technology.
The Satellite Navigation System also acts as a hard
drive so that MP3s can be downloaded and your
Prius can be clutter-free.
Bluetooth links your cellphone with the dashboard
display – your contacts and calendar are right
there in front of you to make hands-free calls and
organising your life that much easier.
Not only does this kind of understanding make
driving that much more enjoyable, it also makes
it safer.
The Prius features the Smart Entry and Smart Start
System as standard equipment because there’s
nothing worse than digging for your keys in a dark
parking lot. When carrying your Prius key, the doors
unlock when you grasp the outside door handle
and lock when you press the Touch Sensor in the
handle. This system also turns on the ignition by
simply pushing the Power Button.

In preventing accidents, every fraction of a second
counts. A Heads-up display projects the speedometer onto the windscreen directly in front of the
driver so that the driver can keep his or her eyes on
the road without having to look down at the console.
Fighter pilots use a similar type of technology where
losing attention, even for a split second, is simply not
an option.
An Emergency Brake Signal automatically flashes
the brake lights during sudden braking to warn
trailing vehicles of an emergency and therefore
reduces the danger of a rear end collision. The
system is activated when the driver presses on the
brake pedal while travelling at speeds over 55 km/h
and the car decelerates at a rate of over 7 m/s2.
In other words, the system is activated with sudden
braking.
