She earned a B.S. in Bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001 and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Dartmouth College in 2008. In the lab, Dr. Stockwell’s research team uses recombinant DNA technologies to dissect the ways in which bacteria sense and respond to changing environments. Additional scholarly interests include teaching methods to foster deep learning and curricular design for the development of transferable skills. Her commitment to break down barriers between science and society, by involving novice and nonscientists in the scientific process, motivates her to engage with sustained K-12 STEM education outreach and the interdisciplinary JMU Honors Program. To achieve this end, she has taken a “Citizen Science” approach in which high school students collect and verify environmental isolates from soil samples while JMU undergraduate researchers perform the more sophisticated genetic analyses. In doing so, she has created a symbiosis between educators and students as a means to meet shared scientific and educational goals. 7 George W. Jeffers Memorial Lecture An Age for Measurement: STEM Prior to the Industrial Revolution Eric Pyle James Madison University The Age of Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th Centuries provided a framework of thinking that led to modern science as we understand it today. This new capacity for reason allowed Western Civilization to measure the physical world and the heavens with greater precision than had been known in all of human history before. But measuring the heavens led people to measure the Earth in ways that resolved both practical questions of borders between peoples but opened up new questions on the structure of the Earth. This focus on precision in measurement made possible the reproducible machinery of the Industrial Revolution. Appearing as a Surveyor in Colonial Virginia, Dr. Eric J. Pyle of the JMU Department of Geology & Environmental Science will share how measuring the Mason-Dixon line depended on a 6-foot tall telescope and a fir rod, why lodestones were worth their weight in silver, and how determining the mass of the Earth relied on a really good clock. These stories share how solid science could be conducted under extraordinary circumstances and how important field-based science is to science as a whole. 8 Sydney S. Negus Memorial Lecture Botanical Explorations in the Galápagos Islands: From Darwin till Today Conley K. McMullen James Madison University Dr. McMullen received his B.S. (Biology) from Eastern Mennonite College, M.S. (Biology) from James Madison University, and Ph.D. (Botany) from the University of Maryland at College Park. At JMU, he teaches Organisms (Bio 114) and four upper division plant courses, is director of the herbarium, and serves on the E. J. Carrier Arboretum Advisory Board. His research focuses on the eastern U.S. and the Galápagos Islands (floristics, systematics, pollination biology). He has spoken widely and authored numerous scientific papers, including his book Flowering Plants of the Galápagos. He has served on the Flora Advisory Board for the Flora of Virginia Project, and for many years has been a group leader at the West Virginia Wildflower Pilgrimage. He has served the Association of Southeastern Biologists as Secretary; the Society of Herbarium Curators as Executive Board member and editor of The Vasculum; the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society as President; and is currently President-Elect of the Virginia Academy of Science. Additionally, he is an Honorary Research Associate of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, a member of the Science Advisory Board of Galápagos Conservancy, an elected Fellow of The Linnean Society of London, and an elected Governing Member of the Charles Darwin Foundation for the Galápagos Islands. 9 Virginia Academy of Science Special Symposium STATE OF VIRGINIA’S ENVIRONMENT Thursday, May 21, 2015 9 am – 5 pm Bioscience 1007 and 2007 What is the Current State of our Air Quality Central Virginia Rivers Forests Geology Land Use Oceans & Marine Areas Tidal Wetlands Water Quality Amphibians Birds Fish Insects Mammals Mollusks Plants Reptiles Recognized experts will report in these areas NOTE: Separate registration is required for this symposium. 10 VJAS CAREER FAIR & VAS POSTER SESSION VJAS CAREER FAIR Thursday, May 21, 2015 2 – 5 pm ISAT Main Foyer CAREER FAIR PARTICIPANTS George Mason University Bioengineering Department James Madison University Admissions James Madison University ISAT Department Virginia Tech College of Science and others VAS POSTER SESSION Friday, May 22, 2015 9 am - 5 pm Festival Highlands Room Festival Lower Drum See VAS Section Programs for List of Poster Titles and Authors Poster authors will be present from 1-2 pm to discuss posters and answer questions 11 LOCATION OF VJAS PAPER SESSIONS All VJAS Paper Presentation Sessions will take place in Health and Human Services (HHS) and Integrated Science & Technology (ISAT) as indicated below.
