YRP
FOREWORD FROM CHAIR,
YOUTH RESEARCH PROGRAM
Youth Research Program
IBN
IBN’s Youth Research Program (YRP) aims to foster a spirit of scientific enquiry among the young in
Singapore. Since 2003, we have been committed to nurturing scientific talent at all educational levels, and
we hope that our outreach efforts will encourage young people to pursue the sciences in their higher
education and careers in scientific research.
To achieve our mission, the YRP conducts open houses, career talks, workshops and science camps, which
are targeted at students and teachers from primary schools, secondary schools, junior colleges,
polytechnics and the universities. YRP also offers research attachments for secondary and tertiary
students. IBN scientists have also designed a series of Nano-Bio Kits that introduce students to complex
bioengineering and nanotechnology concepts in an accessible and interesting manner.
Our outreach efforts have expanded and grown significantly since October 2003. As of 2009, we have
reached out to over 34,800 students and teachers from 228 schools. We are especially pleased that our YRP
students have received 35 local and international awards for their research projects conducted at IBN and
88 of them have won scholarships to further their scientific pursuits.
The YRP seeks to broaden our outreach and play a role in developing future generations of excellent
scientists, thereby firmly establishing Singapore as a leading world-class biomedical hub.

Roderica and her mentors at IBN (Left - right): Dr Edwin Chow, IBN Team Leader and
Senior Research Scientist; Roderica Ng, YRP Student and Ambassador; Dr Jeremy Teo,
IBN Postdoctoral Fellow.
Translation: Roderica is an academically inclined science student, often scoring straight As in the
subject, and she has also thoughts of becoming a scientist. However prior to her participation in this
research, this was just an idea. Roderica was motivated by her grandmother’s experience as a renal
patient to improve the quality of life of kidney patients. Her interest in scientific research has been
strengthened by three years of hands-on research experience [at IBN]. She now aspires to become a
scientist or a doctor.

(Left - right): Mohammed Shahrudin Ibrahim, Mei Xuan Tan, Lee Yong Yeow, Lin Kin Yong.
What motivated you to join IBN?
Shahrudin: Being attached to IBN as a YRP student ignited my interest in becoming a scientist. The dedicated researchers I worked with during my attachment and
the institute’s well-managed administration were two compelling reasons why I wanted to apply for a research position at IBN.
Yong Yeow: My colleagues in IBN are talented and technically savvy, and many are also great mentors and friends to me. I am honored to work with the best people
around. It keeps me happy and motivated to be a member of this big team.
What do you like about working in IBN?
Shahrudin: IBN is a very conducive place for research, with supportive directors, a cheerful working environment and excellent administrative staff. The culture of
the Institute encourages collaborations between the various research groups, and fosters interaction between researchers from different laboratories. Shared
ideas and challenges encountered during research can be discussed among colleagues from various interdisciplinary backgrounds. For a biologist like myself, I may
be able to develop beyond my own discipline at IBN and resolve research problems by taking on an engineer’s or a chemist’s approach to find alternative solutions.
Mei Xuan: All IBN staff work hard and efficiently. Colleagues here are also helpful and warm, making working at IBN an enjoyable experience.

FAMILIAR FACES: YRP ALUMNI AT IBN (2010)
What are your research interests?
Lin Kin: I am currently working on developing non-viral vectors that can deliver genes or peptides to immune cells for cancer therapy. This project covers cancer
biology, immunology, chemistry, and gene delivery, all of which are my research interests. My other research interests include genetics and physiology.
Yong Yeow: My work focuses on device miniaturization and molecular diagnostics.
What are the challenges of doing research?
Lin Kin: It is very important to be optimistic and persistent, since research is a long process. Many failed or imperfect attempts are usually encountered before you
can succeed. While it can be frustrating, it is also challenging and enlightening.
Mei Xuan: Doing research is indeed challenging because it is a continuous process of problem solving. Researchers are always trying to find better solutions to a
scientific problem. During this process, we may get the opportunity to make a breakthrough discovery that can be of great benefit to humanity.
What are the qualities of a successful researcher?
Shahrudin: A successful researcher should be able to stay calm and extract potential solutions not found in textbooks. Humility and generosity in sharing knowledge
are good qualities that will benefit the scientific community as a whole. Most importantly, patience is essential for research, as countless experiments have to be
conducted to gather meaningful information.
Yong Yeow: It is crucial to plan and conduct experiments carefully because the quality of your results may depend on having well-controlled experiments.
Mei Xuan: Besides having creativity and integrity, a passion for research is necessary for success.

IBN’S NANO-BIO KITS
The Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology’s award-winning Nano-Bio Kits are educational tools to help teachers introduce applications of bioengineering
and nanotechnology to their students through interactive sessions using laboratory equipment commonly available in schools. Targeted at 15 to 19 year olds, the
Nano-Bio Kits demonstrate the latest advances in scientific research, particularly in the areas of nanobiotechnology, medical devices and drug delivery.
Developed by IBN researchers, each Nano-Bio Kit contains experiment components, teaching resources and videos for teachers to plan and conduct their science
lessons.
IBN’s Nano-Bio Kits have been selected for exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Museum for Emerging Science and Innovation
in Tokyo for their innovative design and unique approach to scientific education. These educational toolboxes also received the 2008 Award of Excellence
(Packaging Series) at the 49th Annual Design Exhibition organized by Communication Arts, a leading international visual communications magazine.
The Biological Fuel Cell Kit demonstrates how biochemical energy may be converted into electricity using enzymes
immobilized on nanostructured particles. Bio-fuel cells are a ‘green’ alternative to conventional energy sources, as they run on
sugar solutions and are emission-free. Students can assemble their own bio-fuel cell with the materials provided in the Kit and
learn about the basic electrochemistry of a fuel cell and alternative energy sources.
The Dielectrophoresis Chip Kit demonstrates how cells behave under dielectrophoresis (DEP). DEP is commonly used in
numerous biological applications for cell manipulation, separation and characterization. Students can fabricate their own DEP
chips using basic photolithography techniques with the Kit and find out how a device with micrometer-sized features can be
made. They will also be able to control the movement of cells on their DEP chips and discover the way an electric field can
capture a cell that is less than 1/10th the diameter of a strand of hair.
The Thermo-Responsive Hydrogel Kit demonstrates how a thermo-sensitive material is synthesized, and how the rate of
diffusion of particles within the material is altered at different temperatures. Practical applications of hydrogels include
controlled drug delivery systems for disease treatment. Students can synthesize a thermo-responsive hydrogel through
polymerization, and study its behavior at different temperatures. They can also observe how particles diffuse through the
hydrogel. With this Kit, students gain an understanding of how basic polymer science, the formation of hydrogels and the
thermally activated release mechanism generate novel drug delivery systems for improved medical treatment.
