2013 Annual Report
FOUNDATION
Helping our community is at the heart of everything we do at the CDA
Foundation. It’s why we hold our twice-yearly events, CDA Cares, where
we provide patients with dental care at no cost. Made possible by more
than 6,000 volunteers from both in and out of the dental profession,
these events have provided care to more than 8,000 of California’s most
vulnerable citizens.
Our work has helped make the plight of the underserved real and
understandable for elected officials, the media and the public. It has given
members of the profession the opportunity to advocate successfully on a
variety of critical issues such as reinstating the adult Denti-Cal program
and establishing a state dental director. Through our work, we can
continue to bring to light the challenges in meeting the needs of those
less fortunate.
It’s also why, since 2002, the CDA Foundation Student Loan Repayment
Grant has helped relieve 14 dentists of a significant portion of their dental
school debt so that they can treat underserved patients. Talented hands
that have compassionately cared for nearly 72,000 smiles.
Your heart and generosity have enabled these achievements. I thank those
who have given of their time and resources and I invite those who have
yet to join our mission to come along. It’s an incredibly rewarding ride.

human toll of budgetary
cuts in oral health and
believing passionately
that together we can
make a difference.

Student Loan Repayment Grant
The center of the community.
The heart of a dentist.
For many dentists, a desire to work in public health is often impossible due
to the crushing weight of student loan debt. In fact, some graduate owing
$400,000 or more. To help, the CDA Foundation created the Student Loan
Repayment Grant. Since 2002, the program has enabled 14 dentists to
embrace their dream of working in public
health by providing up to $105,000 per
dentist for the repayment of student loans
in exchange for a three-year commitment
to care for the underserved.
For Dr. Stephanie Calvillo, that grant was
the difference that allowed her to work
in a low-cost clinic in her hometown of
Redlands, Calif. There, in the heart of the community where she grew up,
she is able to communicate with her patients in Spanish, something that
enables her to gain their trust and explain procedures in a way that eases
their fears. And it must be working. Since Dr. Calvillo joined the clinic, her
patient load has grown from eight to 14 patients per day.
Since its inception, the CDA Foundation Student Loan Repayment Grant has
helped nearly 72,000 patients and delivered more than $18 million in care.

CDA Cares
The epitome of compassionate dentistry.
Imagine living for months with the pain of an infected tooth or cavity and
no way to relieve the discomfort. That is often the reality for many of the
10 million people who fall through the cracks of the health care system. In
its short tenure, with lines often wrapping around the building, CDA Cares
has helped more than 8,000 patients receive essential care and highlighted
the human impact of those who struggle to obtain dental treatment.
Volunteers and donors can take great pride
in knowing that lawmakers cited visits
to CDA Cares as the primary reason for
partially restoring Adult Denti-Cal. A huge
win for the state and the people who call
it home.
From San Diego to San Jose, Modesto to
Sacramento, CDA Cares has provided
$6 million in dental treatment, and with every event, the number of smiles
across the state continues to grow.

Corporate Sponsors
Moved to make a difference.
Every CDA Cares event is a success
because of the generosity of the more
than 100 corporate sponsors who share
the CDA Foundation’s values of caring for
the community. Giving back is often in the
fabric of their businesses. Two companies
in particular, Benco Dental and Carestream
Dental, have supported CDA Cares since
the very first event in 2012. Both have
made generous donations and have involved their staff in the spirit of
community and giving back.
This year, new sponsors such as San Jose’s Kaiser Permanente and
El Camino Hospital have also joined in the efforts. When people in pain
turn to the emergency room for treatment, it’s at great expense to hospitals
that often lack the dental expertise to treat the underlying condition.
Emergency room doctors and nurses see firsthand the impact this has on
the communities they serve. They know that the lack of dental care is one of
the most common unmet needs in our society and are working with the CDA
Foundation to help.

Direct Care Programs
Fluoridation
Before the early 1990s, when CDA sponsored legislation requiring fluoridation
in communities with appropriate funding, only 17 percent of California’s
population benefitted from fluoridated water. Today, due to the continual efforts,
62.5 percent of the state’s population receives the benefit of fluoridation and the
numbers continue to grow.
In 2013, the Olivenhain Municipal Water District in northern San Diego County
went online and the Sweetwater Authority in eastern San Diego County began
the capital improvement phase.
Santa Clara County, the largest community in the country without community
water fluoridation, began moving forward with capital improvements for a new
fluoridation system. Hopefully, the San Jose Water Company will soon follow,
ensuring that every resident of the county will receive the many benefits of
fluoridated water.

First 5 San Diego, The California Endowment, The Health Trust
Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA)
More than 10 years ago, the CDA Foundation, in partnership with the UCSF
School of Dentistry, published evidence in the Journal of the California
Dental Association that caries could be prevented and managed through risk
assessment. Since then, dentists continue to be educated on the findings.
The CDA Foundation entered into a multiyear collaboration with the UCSF
School of Dentistry to replicate the results of the clinical studies in dental offices.
Dentists interested in learning about and implementing CAMBRA into their
practices can take advantage of the new MyCAMBRA mobile app developed
by the UCSF School of Dentistry and Firsthand Technology Inc.

Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award
The Dugoni Faculty
Award acknowledges
and supports eligible
faculty affiliated with the
state’s six dental schools
for their exceptional
leadership, innovation,
collaboration,
compassion,
philanthropic spirit
and integrity in
dental education. It
was developed to
support individuals
who contribute to the
scholarly and creative
activities of California
dental students.
Dr. Earl Freymiller went into academics directly
from residency training, knowing that if he went
into private practice he might be financially richer
but probably intellectually poorer. That decision
has worked out better than he likely ever imagined.
He has made friendships that include faculty and
bright dental students and is able to interact with them on a daily
basis. What’s more, with the belief that dentists are privileged to
be able to help others, for 23 years Dr. Freymiller has volunteered
with the Thousand Smiles Foundation, a nonprofit group that treats
Mexican children with cleft lip and palate deformities.
With the Dr. Arthur A. Dugoni Faculty Award, Dr. Freymiller receives
a scholarship that he will use to directly improve clinical teaching at
UCLA. He will place the award into a fund reserved for improving
the students’ and residents’ clinical teaching program in oral and
maxillofacial surgery at UCLA.

Henry Schein Cares has a long-standing commitment to serve those in need, as demonstrated
through its partnership with the CDA Foundation. Thanks to the company’s generosity, more than

Crowns for Kids Grant Program
The metals used in crowns are precious for many reasons, but especially when they are recycled
to fund community oral health projects for California’s underserved children. Since its inception,
Crowns for Kids has raised $60,000 in that effort, generating thousands of smiles along the way.
South Bay Children’s Health Center
A grant for $12,872 was awarded to fund the South Bay Children’s Health Center’s oral
health project that will provide dental health care services, including free screenings, oral
hygiene instructions, fluoride varnish applications and toothbrushes to approximately 11,000
children. The grant was made available through contributions from generous individuals in
the surrounding community for the specific purpose of supporting South Bay Children’s Health
Center’s oral health related services.
Latinos for Dental Careers Scholarship
Provides scholarships to eligible dental, dental hygiene and international dental students
of Latino descent currently enrolled or accepted into a California Dental School.
Bettie Underwood Dental Assisting Scholarship
Supports dental assisting students in pursuit of their educational goals and provides up to
$1,000 to a student enrolled in a California dental assisting program.
