SILVER EXPRESS - San Francisco Bay Weimaraner Club
SILVER EXPRESS
MARCH 2015
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Message from the President
Our SFBWC training at Hastings Island on March 21st was cancelled due to lack of interest. No one had RSVP’d with
Debbie Gross (I was going to be out of town) and we need the information beforehand so we can order birds and
reserve a training field. This was quite a difference from January when we were overrun with handlers and dogs on
practice day. We will attempt to have another practice day in April, so stay tuned for the date.
Our 2015 nominations are drawing to a close. The current slate of nominations is as follows:
President:
Vice President;
Secretary:
Treasurer:
Board Member:
Board Member:
Dan McDermott
Bruce Gross
Dionne Mercer
Cathy Gould
Martha Zimet
Sandra Sue Mocco
If you would like to nominate someone else or even yourself, please contact Bruce Gross, Nominating Committee
Chairperson at: [email protected]. If no further nominations come in, this will be our slate of SFBWC Officers for
2015/2016.
I spent several days in Yerington, NV in late February with my trainer Brad Higgins. There is additional information on
Brad and his unique training methods later in the newsletter. Brad has an 80 acre parcel in Yerington which is bounded
by a wildlife area and BLM land. Often, we load up the dogs on the ATV and take off for the back country and the hills
Ruger on Point with Pheasant in Brush
Sophia on Point on a Covey of Chukar
Although Brad uses pen raised birds, they are raised in fly pens, and they are the closest birds to wild you can train with.
He just throws them off the ATV, and often they form coveys which can be quite challenging. Brad has a feeding station
and water guzzler for the birds. There are also wild valley quail to contend with, and once Sophia was on point on a
covey of chukar, and a covey of wild valley quail goes running by between her and the chukars. She did not move a
muscle. Sophia tells me when there is more than one bird when she is on point by flicking her eyes right and left to the
locations of the other birds. This lets me know to be careful when flushing so I don’t disturb the other birds. Ruger was
also awesome. I am still running him on a check cord, working towards being steady to wing, shot and fall. He has the
wing and shot part down cold. He manages and tracked a running hen pheasant for about 10 minutes, when we lost
sight of him. When the shooters and I came up over a bluff in the direction we had last seem him, there he was on point,
having gotten the pheasant stopped in a bush, where it was about three feet off of the ground. He is so very steady that
he waited for us to catch up with him, and continued to wait while I walked around him taking pictures. Good boy,
Ruger!
A project we are working on is a new SFBWC website, which will be done by Anne Taguchi of Touchstone Weimaraners,
and who has implemented the Weimaraner websites that receive the most amount of visitors. She did a website for one
Weimaraner breeder who received 90 applications for her last litter! We will be implementing Search Engine
Optimization (SEO) based on key words to improve our ranking when someone enters search words into the search
engines such as Google. This will benefit our recommended breeders and will bring new members to the club. Stay
tuned for more details on this.
Since my time as your President is winding down, I just wanted to thank all of you for letting me be of service these last
three years. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself. I am not going anywhere as I am a SFBWC Lifetime member, and you can
expect to see me volunteering at our next Hunt Test.

AKC has rated the popularity of dog breeds for 2014. The Weimaraner is #34 overall and #8 Sporting Dog. The
Labrador Retriever was #1 Sporting Dog. The Beagle was rated #5 and being the Best of Show winner at
Westminster in 2015 will probably raise its popularity.

BRAD HIGGINS GUN DOG TRAINING:
Brad Higgins is a gun dog trainer in Yerington, Nevada, out in the Nevada desert. His website
http://higginsgundogs.com states that he specializes in the training, rehab and repair of bird dogs and their
owners!! Take a look and read all about his methods and results. Several members of San Francisco Bay
Weimaraner Club have trained with Brad and have obtained the title of Higgins Gun Dog. Brad’s technique is
completely low pressure based on dog psychology. He trains for hunting, not for field events – no Woah
training or e-collar. The dogs get a chance to work in the wide open spaces of the Nevada Desert. If you are
looking to start your dog out in the field or to correct problems, give Brad a call.
BUCKETS DONATES LIFE SAVING BLOOD!
A year ago I learned from your newsletter about Weimaraners being universal donors for blood,
and we can donate at UC Davis vet hospital.
Buckets donated his blood last week, and out of 1 unit
of Blood they can give 2 units of packed red blood
cells,( 1 unit of plasma, and 1 unit of platelets, and
even cryoprecipitate, these are other parts of whole
blood that helps blood clot) The packed red blood
cells or PRBC's replaced blood loss.
Just in case people do not know what a universal
donor is, it’s like people with O negative blood, it is
the lifesaving type of Blood that anyone can receive
in an Emergency.
There is a great need for donated blood at UC Davis
Vet Hospital. There are dogs that do not make
enough Platelets, and need just platelet transfusion.
Some dogs are chronically anemic, and need PRBC transfusions. Then, there are surgical cases
that need transfusions of PRBC's, plasma and platelets.
The donation process is from dogs 2-8 years old, and can be done every 6-8 weeks. Your first
visit will be just drawing blood to see if the dog is healthy for donation. Once you get the OK to
donate you can make the appointment.
At each visit for donating you will receive a 2 month’s supply for Advantage flea and tick, and
liquid heart guard, and a big bag of treats.
The day of donation your Weim will sleep a lot and drink lots of water. The next day all is back
to normal. Be sure to bring your dog’s favorite treats, My Weim did not like their treats, he
does great with string cheese or chicken hotdogs.
You can make your appointment today by calling 530-752-1393. They are in great need of
Weimaraners now.

WINDI’S FAMILY
Chapter 2
It’s a lot of work being a mother!!! But, I love every minute
of it!! The nine pups keep me busy day and night. I keep
them clean by licking them, keep track of where they go –
inside and outside. I bring them toys and play with them. I
still try to feed them occasionally, but my milk is gone – but
they continue to check for a drop or two and I love the
babies! They are eating a raw diet and I get to clean out the
dishes when they finish eating. Raw meaty bones are a real
treat for them and their little teeth work quite well on the bones. They are all fairly
well trained to use their potty area but prefer to go outside.
I watch carefully to make sure the pups are in no danger. The other day we were outside and I heard a strange sound,
one that I had never heard before. My instincts immediately cautioned me and I gave my “alert” bark. All the puppies
came running and I got them safely into the house. We never did determine what the sound was but I was proud of my
pups all responding to my special bark. I also try to keep them away from the corral where the ponies are.
The pups love to play in the miniature agility course. They have learned to navigate
all of the obstacles and are very confident and have no problem going through the
tunnel or pipe, up the ramp, over and under whatever they find. They love to upset
the toy box and then nap among the stuffed animals. They have listened to CD’s
hearing thunder, cars, windstorms, dog show noises, etc. No one is fearful!!! They
also have learned to use the dog door.
It is great fun taking the pups outside. It is a
whole new experience for them and they use
their noses to explore and find little treasures
like sticks and a piece of rope. It’s a wonderful
time for them as the grass is green and plants
have leafed out and they love to run and to be in the sun - and so do I! When they
get tired, they pile together to sleep and I love to watch over them.
Bruce brought in a dog crate and we have started crate
training. It didn’t take much to convince them to sleep in the
crate as it takes the place of a dog den. Soon all nine were
piled in there. As they grow, we added more crates. The pups
each have individual times to run around inside the house
practicing their motor skills and confidence, and it gives them
one on one playing time with me. They love to find things, like
Bruce’s slippers! They also are now climbing on the ottoman
and chairs! Chief comes in to check them out but I watch closely!! He knows they will soon grow
up and big enough for him to play with. We have many visitors and a dear friend even came all
the way from Maryland to see them, so the pups get a lot of holding and warm laps to experience.
The other night was spa night where all the pups got a bath in the sink. They were so good just standing under the
faucet with the water running. They also got their nails trimmed and collars cleaned. This was all in preparation for a
photo shoot by Kevallyn Marie which resulted in some wonderful pictures of the kids. It is difficult to get them to pose
all in a row but Kevi succeeded to do so.
The next big puppy experience was learning to
stand like a show dog. Debbie purchased some
“Stacking Blocks” which teaches the pup where to
put its feet. I may be a bit prejudice, but I think
my pups are beautiful! Then the other day Bruce
took the cover off the hot tub and the pups all
individually got a chance to swim. It is amazing
that they know instinctively how to paddle!
At 7 weeks the pups had grown enough to do conformation grading and temperament
testing . This shows how the pups have developed in their body structure, their personality, their aptitude and talents.
They also got to sniff a real Chukar to introduce their hunting instincts. All this helps to choose the pups for the homes
that will suit them best.
It was also time for the visit to the vet. Debbie was fortunate to have a vet who
also had been involved in showing and breeding. She gave each of the pups a
thorough examination both healthwise and in conformation. They also received
their first shot. The vet was very pleased with the litter. Chief and I were
thrilled that we had made such beautiful, healthy pups!
And now the sad time comes for me. These 8 weeks have gone by so fast and
soon the pups will be leaving with their new families. They have a whole wide
world in front of them filled with new
experience, adventures and lots of love.
I will miss them but know they are ready
for their new life and that they will make
their families very happy. I look forward to watching them grow and mature. I
will always love and remember the scent of each and every one of them.
And….I have a big doggy smile on my face because I have just heard that two of
the pups will be staying here. Bruce has fallen in love with Yellow (with Debbie’s
approval) and Pink will be Debbie’s next competition dog. I will still have two of
my babies to take care of. Life is good………
THIS AND THAT…….
