ATHLETIC PROGRAM BELIEFS
We believe students are our highest priority. The dignity, worth
and self-esteem of participants should be paramount in all
athletic activities. The most important result of competition is
the development of life-long values and skills. The athletic
program is an integral part of the high school experience. High
school athletics should be fun and rewarding. Athletic programs
are most beneficial when they are competitive. Winning in an
attitude resulting from optimum preparation, concentrated effort
and a deep commitment to excel. Well-designed athletic
programs promote community and school pride.
Open
communication and mutual respect among coaches, parents and
athletes provides the foundation for a successful athletic program.
Moral satisfaction and performance are enhanced when athletes
work together as a team. Well qualified coaches and program
administrators are important components in a successful athletic
program. Positive parent support and involvement enhances
student growth and program quality.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Friends & Guests,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2008 Cathedral High School College Preparatory fall
football season. It is with a deep sense of pride and gratitude that we welcome you to our campus in
our inaugural season under the lights in our new football and soccer stadium.
For the last three years, Cathedral High School has been engaged in one of the most successful
Catholic high school building campaigns in the history of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Last
November we proudly dedicated our new Gymnasium and the W.M. Keck Science Center. In January
2008, our $14 million dollar dream became a reality when students and faculty began to use the new
science laboratories, media design studio, classrooms, gymnasium, team rooms and offices in our
fully furnished 48,000 sq ft three-story facility. In late winter 2008, construction work shifted to the
total transformation of our football/soccer field and track. On September 11, 2008 we paid tribute
to our nation and those who were tragically killed on this day seven years ago, when we blessed
and dedicated our new stadium. During Christmas vacation the track surface will be installed and
an additional bleacher section will be completed on the south side of the field to provide additional
seating for Cathedral fans.
While we are delighted with our wonderful new facilities, what we continue to take the most pride
in is our students. For the Class of 2008 – for the first time in school history – 100% were accepted by
a college or university (since 1997 we’ve averaged a 98% college placement rate). The Class of 2008
with 154 graduates was also the largest graduating class in more than 50 years! The recent graduates
received 41 offers of admission to UC (UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, etc.),
170 to CSU (CSU Northridge, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Fullerton, etc.) and 35 acceptances to a private
or out-of-state college (USC, LMU, Boston University, St. Mary’s College, St. John University, etc.).
Approximately, 78% of the graduates earned admission to a four-year university, while 22% enrolled
at a community college (SMC, PCC, ELAC, etc) this fall.
As our teams compete throughout the season, let us never forget that occasions for loss and victory
are important opportunities to shape and define the character of the young men we educate. For a
Phantom, good character more than points, will always distinguish the true winner.
Sincerely in Christ,
Brother John Montgomery, FSC
Principal

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Friends of Cathedral High School,
I am pleased to welcome you to another year of Phantom Football! I want to thank all the coaches
and athletes for all their hard work and dedication they put in this summer to play to the best of their
abilities. I also want to thank the athletic boosters for supporting their sons and coaches with many
hours of support.
There is great excitement this year at Cathedral High School. Our new 48,000 sq. ft. gymnasiumscience labs and classrooms complex is complete and filled with activities and life. This wonderful
building is complimented by the $4,000,000 Balzano Family Field and Parlapiano & Farfan Track
project which started this Spring thanks to the dedication and extraordinary gift of our alumnus
Melvin Henderson-Rubio ’70. This investment in our students has allowed them the opportunity to
practice and play in a state-of-the-art facility.
Our new facilities are meeting the most pressing academic needs of our students and will provide
for a facility that will be the home of many athletic games and training, meetings, social events for
the Cathedral family, and our school Masses and prayer services.
I look forward to seeing many of you at one of our first ever night games on our Cathedral Stadium this
football season. Thank you for supporting our young men on the football field and go Phantoms!
Fraternally,
Martin Farfan ‘86
President

A MESSAGE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Dear Fellow Phantoms,
As we enter the 2008-2009 school year, Cathedral Athletics are truly on a dawn of a new age. With
the rebirth of our gymnasium and weight room last year, and with the addition of the turf field, track
and score board in 2008, Cathedral’s facilities are without compare.
But it is not the facilities that make Cathedral unique. Cathedral is blessed to be run by the Christian
Brothers. The Brothers’ dedication to the students of Cathedral in and outside the classroom is an
inspiration. This inspiration spills over into the students, faculty and alumni of Cathedral. Cathedral
is also blessed by the students who attend. Their energy, spirit and commitment to education is
contagious.
It is a combination of our students, faculty, administration, parents and alumni that make the
Cathedral athletic program special. This year all eleven head coaches return. Kevin Pearson leads
his football team onto the new Vic Balzano Family field with CIF aspirations, while Martin Farfan’s
cross country team hopes to improve on last years CIF playoff team. Brady Lowdermilk has his water
polo and swim team back in the pool as both of these programs continue to grow. In the winter we
will see the return of both the basketball and the soccer team who were highly ranked last year, and
they both are primed to make deeper runs into the CIF Playoffs. In the spring the golf team will try
to defend its league championship, the first in the modern era of CIF golf. Volleyball and baseball
are in positions to improve upon their CIF first round losses last year, and move deeper into the CIF
tournament. Tennis under second year coach Youlan Chan will be ready to take on the tough Del
Rey league, while the track team looks toward a CIF and State Championship while running on the
Parlipiano and Farfan track. This is a great era for Cathedral sports teams, and I am proud to be a
part of them.
So, Cathedral Phantoms, come out and support your teams this year, and I will see you on the
field, in the pool, on the courts, on the track, in the hills and down the fairway.
John Ferrante
Dean of Services,
Athletic Director

Alumnus Melvin Henderson Rubio ‘70 has provided the students of Cathedral High of today and tomorrow a
state of the art athletic field and track. His gift for this monumental project totals more than $4 million dollars.
The new Balzano Family Field and Parlapiano and Farfan Track are surfaced with the best materials available.
New stadium lights allow for night games and the electronic scoreboard has the latest technology. Cathedral
is the first high school in California to have such a scoreboard. The field and track project also required major
upgrades in infrastructure to allow the field to be extended to regulation length including new retaining walls,
drainage systems to collect rain runoff, and electrical equipment to power the new lights and scoreboard, and
new bleacher seating.
Melvin Henderson Rubio has a long history of interest in Cathedral High School and its students and involvement in securing the success of the school. In his generosity he contributed over $400,000 for the construction
and equipping of the new gymnasium-science labs and classroom complex. Melvin was a founding member of
the Cathedral High School Board of Trustees—serving from 1996 through 2002. He participated in the planning
process for the original school master plan that was developed in 2000-2001.
He has always known that the wellbeing and success of Cathedral students is even more important than buildings and other campus facilities. Twenty years ago he inaugurated a school wide essay contest in order to encourage students to develop writing skills and critical thinking. He also began to fund academic scholarships for
top students coming to Cathedral High School each year. Each spring he hosts a dinner to honor essay contest
winners and scholarship recipients. In years past he has funded a counseling position on the faculty to insure
that students were encouraged to apply to college and have current career information in order for them to make
the best choices as they prepared to graduate from Cathedral High School.
Melvin Henderson Rubio was born and raised in East Los Angeles. He entered Cathedral High School from
San Antonio de Padua School in the fall of 1966. He excelled in his studies and participated in various sports,
including tennis which was just being reintroduced at that time to Cathedral by Br. Anthony Lenz. In his senior
year, Melvin attended a college recruitment meeting with Willamette University. He tells the story that he was
faced with the decision to take an exam in Br. James’s English class or attend the college meeting. He chose the
meeting and the rest is history.
Having never traveled far from home, Melvin found himself in the small town of Salem, Oregon in September,
1970. At his new alma mater he prospered and made life long friends with fellow students, faculty, and staff.
Many of his friends from his early years at Willamette traveled from all over the country to attend the dedication
Mass for the new field and track. They were introduced to the student body in the ceremony following Mass.
Melvin is an exceeding loyal and generous friend.
After graduation from Willamette, Melvin remained in the Northwest. He worked for the Oregon stores of
the May Company and other major retail establishments. Computer technology was in its early years and Melvin became involved. He was offered a position at the just developing Microsoft Corporation and moved to
Redmond, Washington. He was one of Microsoft’s original employees and continued to serve that world class
company for many years. He held major management responsibilities throughout his service there. He retired
from Microsoft several years ago and continues to reside in Redmond.
Besides his many involvements at Cathedral High School, he is a major donor to Willamette University and
is a member of that school’s board of trustees. He is a major support of the fine arts. He provides major funding for the Smithsonian’s National Art Gallery in Washington DC. He has helped the Christian Brothers Lasallian Education Opportunities (LEO) program which was founded by his Cathedral math teacher, the late Br.
Christopher Bassen, and now staffed by his old tennis coach, Br. Anthony Lenz. The LEO program provides
afterschool tutoring and enrichment classes to at risk students of inner city Oakland. It also provides adult education classes. Melvin has also supported programs of the Los Angeles Country Sheriffs Department and the
Los Angeles Police Department designed to help at risk young people to stay in school.
Melvin Henderson Rubio, Cathedral Class of 1970, is a hero to many people. And he is greatly appreciated
by the Cathedral High School family.

2008 CHEERLEADING TEAM
It’s our pleasure to introduce you to your 2008-2009 Lady Phantoms
Cheerleading Team! Our entire staff takes great pride in being part of the
Cathedral High School tradition. Lady Phantom’s come from various all girl
catholic high schools in the surrounding Los Angeles area. While building
cheerleading skills is important, we are most proud of the character, personal
achievement, teamwork, and self esteem our cheerleaders will
gain while being apart of Lady Phantom Cheer program.
Your cheerleaders attended camp in August and came home with:
3 Time Spirit Stick Winners, Camp Overall Spirit Award
& Top Team Game Day Chant Award!
We look forward to spending many years with you and your family. The year
has just begun; and we look forward to you being a part of it all!
