Cheyenne Nickell mining for gold at state
Heck yeah, Hannah is also vying for precious medal at track meet
By HERMAN BROWN
Allen correspondent
The Allen Lady Mustangs
will have two athletes competing in the upcoming state track
and field meet at Carl Albert
High School in Midwest City.
Cheyenne Nickell will represent Allen High School in the
high jump event and Hannah
Heck will be vying for honors
in the hurdles.
Cheyenne Nickell is expected to be a major contender for
a gold medal in the high jump
competition. Nickell won gold
in the event at the regional
meet. She took first place with
a jump of exactly 5 feet. She
currently holds the season-best
mark in Class A with a 5-foot,
2-inch jump that she made
recently at Konawa.
“Cheyenne has medaled every year,” Coach Mills said of
his 5-9 senior standout. “This
year I believe she has a very
good chance to win gold. She
has qualified for state all four
years – and is looking forward
to going out this weekend in
style.”
Coach Mills explains that
“half of the high jump is a mind
game. Her form is so good and
now her head is on right. That
is the only difference in her this
season. She goes out there ex-
pecting to win. That is a great
feeling for her to take into the
state meet.”
Hannah Heck is a freshman who thrilled Allen fans
with her impressive regional
meet performance in the 300
meter hurdles. The 5-5 speedster went bounding over the
hurdles in 51.94 seconds to
capture second place and the
silver medal.
“This freshman is something,” said Coach Mills. “I
am so proud of what she did
at the regional meet. She cut
2 seconds off her time. If she
can cut some more time off at
the state meet, there is no tell-
ing what will happen. I know
she can medal at state and I
believe she will. She certainly
has a chance to medal. She’s
not real tall, so she has to get to
running (to compete with taller
runners). But Hannah is about
as tough as they come and I’m
looking forward to how she’ll
do at Midwest City.”
Coach Mills also praised the
others on the Lady Mustang
track team.
“They all ended the year on
a really good note,” he said.
“”They ran their fastest time
at the regional meet. Everyone
did everything I asked of them.
They all did their best at the
right time. We just had a bad
break that others barely beat
them out (of going to state.”
As a team, the Allen Lady
Mustangs scored a combined
20 points to finish in 11th place
in the final standings.
Here are the results from the
Class A regional track and field
meet on April 27 at Luther:

THE ALLEN ADVOCATE, MAY 2, 2013- PAGE 2

Quote of the Week . . . After rubbing my wife’s back,
I can now say it is easy to describe forty years of marriage in three words: “Intimate to Liniment!”
—CC—
Friday night I had gone to bed early. The next morning I told Dayna that I could not remember what time
I went to sleep but I knew it was early.
She replied, “I don’t know what time you went to sleep
but I know the exact time you started snoring because
it sounded like a train coming thru the house.”
Although I am not for sure, I suspect the following
poem might have been written by her . . .
The day he came a-wooing,
Says his most devoted wife,
I used to think ‘twould easy be
With him to spend my life;
His speech was, oh, so gentle,
And so tall and straight was he,
I never dreamed how terrible
He’d prove someday to be.
I never dreamed I’d wake at night
To give his ribs a whack,
With “Darling, please turn over;
You’re sleeping on your back!
When life was all before us
And our single path uphill,
I never dreamed the time would come
I’d wish his voice was still.
And when “for better or for worse”
To cling to him I vowed,
I never dreamed so nice a man
Could make a noise so loud;
Now, night long through I elbow him
Until he’s blue and black
And say, ”Turn over, darling, please!
You’re sleeping on your back!”
At times it’s like a whistle’s shriek,
At times a grunt and groan,
And then a buzz-saw at a knot,
And then a fearful moan!
There comes a second’s silence
When I think he must be dead
To find he’s merely paused
To start full steam ahead.
Kaden Turpin escorted Braylee Hasbell to the
2013 Calvin Prom.
And this must last my
lifetime through
For how can I forsake
The ghastly creature
fast asleep
Who is so nice awake!
—CC—
Looking back at education in the “good old days”
can be very enlightening.
In 1924 there was a
59-page pamphlet called
Stephenson’s Iowa State
Eighth Grad Examination Question Book. The
test was given to qualify
them to move on into high
school.
The next time you hear
a plea for a tax increase
in your area to enhance
the quality of education,
be bold to ask the
people in charge: “What
enhancements have you
achieved with the money
you already have?”
I couldn’t help thinking
about that a few days ago
when my wife, a favorite
aunt, and I spent most
of a week emptying the
home of Henrietta Abels,
a devoted 99-year-old
Christian woman who had
died not long before. In
the process, we ran across
a little booklet called
Stephenson’s Iowa State
Eighth Grade Examination
Question Book. The 59page pamphlet, published
in 1924, was to help eighthgraders take the test at the
end of their elementary
years that would qualify
them to move on into high
school.
The bottom line is that
most high-school seniors
in 2006 would find the
eighth-grade guide of
1924 quite a challenge.
The questions covered 10
different subject areas-and
you might enjoy (or you
might not) matching your
wits against those of a
typical Iowa eighth-grader
Arithmetic. A wall 77
ft. long, 6.5 ft. high, and
14 inches thick is built of
bricks costing $9.00 per M.
What was the entire cost of
the bricks if 22 bricks were
sufficient to make a cubic
foot of wall?
Geography. What waters
would a ship pass through
in going from Duluth
to Buffalo? With what
would the boat be apt to
be loaded? What, probably,
would it be loaded with on
a return trip?
Grammar. Define five
of the following terms:
antecedent, tense, object,
conjugation, auxiliary
verb, expletive, reflexive
pronoun.
P h y s i o l o g y. ( a )
Beginning with food in
the mouth, trace the course
of digestion, naming the
juices with which the food
is mixed and the results.
(b) What is the reason that
spitting on the street is
dangerous to the health of
a community?

Spelling and Orthography.
Select the proper prefix and place
before each word in the following
list (up, under, out, fore, over):
Spread, balance, hold, sight,
ground, shine, current, brush,
roar, burst.
Writing. Give five movements
to develop accuracy in
penmanship. Tell what you seek
to do in using each movement.
History. (a) What colonies
were founded in America because
of religious reasons? By whom
was each founded? (b) Give the
cause, time, and result of each
of the wars in which the United
States has been involved.
Civil Government. Name
three township, three county, and
three state officers and state what
office each person holds. Why
do so many men dislike holding
township offices?
Music. Draw a staff. Place on
it the scale in half notes in the
keys of G, D, and F. Write the
scale that has a sharp on the fifth
line and another sharp on the
third space.
Reading. Who were Hamlet?
Lochinvar? Naomi? Socrates?
Gathergold? What are the three
most important topics now being
discussed in the newspapers?
State two reasons for reading
a newspaper. Give five uses of
the dictionary. Do you use the
dictionary while studying?
All this, mind you, was
accomplished in the context
of almost overly disciplined
patriotism. The same booklet
suggests, in great detail, proper
decorum during the daily salute
to the flag: “At the given hour
in the morning, the pupils are
assembled and in their places
in the school. Every pupil rises
in his place. The flag is brought
forward to the teacher. While

from the door to the stand of the
teacher every pupil gives to the
flag the military salute, which is
as follows:
“Raise the right hand smartly
till the tip of the forefinger
touches the forehead above the
right eye, thumb and fingers
extended and joined, palm to the
left, forearm inclined at about 45
degrees, hand and wrist straight;
while thus standing, with the
forefinger touching the forehead
in attitude of salute, all the
pupils repeat together slowly and
distinctly the following pledge: I
pledge allegiance to the flag and
the republic for which it stands;
one country; one language; one
flag. At the words, To the flag,
each one extends the right hand
gracefully, palm upward, toward
the flag, until the end of the
pledge or affirmation. Then all
hands drop to the side.
“The pupils, still standing,
all sing together in unison the
national hymn, ‘America.’” (Note
to history aces: Congress voted
“The Star-Spangled Banner” our
national anthem in 1931.)
It was, to be sure, an altogether
different time. We shouldn’t
over-romanticize it. But neither
should we miss the point that it
produced a remarkably educated
society-without bankrupting
taxpayers in the process.

One man said, “My son is so

“You’re lucky,” the other father sighed. “When my son

Threads of Life
by Cleo Emerson LeVally
A few years ago, I was a
member of AARP, an organization for people over 55
years of age. Julie Andrews
was featured in one of the
concerts I attended and the
following is from one of
the songs on the program. I
clipped it. I keep it near my
computer and when I pick it
up, I sing the words mainly
Great Past Life
because I like the tune and
the words fit my mood very
well some days. The melody
is from the Sound of Music.
‘ Maalox and nose drops
and needles for knitting.
Walkers and handrails and
new dental fittings; bundles
of magazines tied in a string.
These are a few of my favor-
ite things.
Cadillacs and cataracts and
hearing aids and glasses; Polident and Fixodent and false
teeth in glasses; Pacemakers,
golf carts and porches with
swings, these are a few of my
favorite things.

Service held for Viva Poole
Funeral Services for Viva Faye
Greene Poole of Ada, were 2:00
pm, Saturday, April 27th, at First
United Methodist Church, Ada,
Oklahoma. Interment followed
at Atwood Cemetery. Officiating was Dr. David Daniel.
Mrs. Poole passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at a local
hospital in Oklahoma City, at
the age of 100.
Viva was born September
29, 1912 at Beulah, Oklahoma
to Homer B. Greene and Lela
Gertrude Earnhart Greene. She
was the eldest of five children.
She attended school at Atwood,
graduating in 1930. She worked
her way through college, earning her room and board by
housekeeping and cooking for
Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Morrison,
the Dean of Students, at East
Central State Teachers College,
in Ada.
Her long and well-respected
teaching career began in 1934
in Fairview (Hughes County)
and later included schools in
Jesse, Pleasant Hill (in Coal
County,) Olney, and Stonewall.
She taught in one-room schoolhouses for many years, usually
multiple grades at once. She
retired from Stonewall in 1976,
after more than three decades
of teaching. Many former firstgraders have written to her and
sent holiday greetings over the
years — a gesture she always
appreciated. She was twice selected “Teacher of the Year.”
Viva married James “Clarence” Poole, a high school
classmate, on June 14, 1936, in a
small ceremony at a home in Allen, Oklahoma. She postponed
her teaching career in the early
years of their marriage, living
in the communities of Round
Prairie, Allen, and Burr Valley,
where she was a homemaker, a
farmer’s wife, and mother to her
three small children.
After retirement, she traveled
with her husband, Clarence.
They enjoyed their time with
their card-playing friends-a
pastime that never grew old to
her. They sold their Burr Valley
farm and moved to Ada in 1988.
After his death, she continued
her hospitality, opening her
basement to dozens of ladies to
come play cards at “The Poole
Hall.”
S he had volunteered and
served others in many ways
over the years at Valley View
Hospital and Ballard’s Nursing
Home, even up until just a few
years ago. Her perseverance and
kindness were an inspiration;
she encouraged others, loved
everyone, frowned upon gossip,
and read her Bible daily.
She lived a long, faith-filled
life of service to God. She was a
charter member of Pleasant Hill
Methodist Church, a longtime
member of Stonewall Methodist Church, and a current member of First United Methodist
Church of Ada.
She was preceded in death by
her husband, Clarence; her twin
infant daughters Barbara Faye
and Beulah Mae Poole; her son
James Chesley “Jim” Poole;
her infant granddaughter Janet
K. Weast; her grandson, Kevin
D. Weast; sisters Vera Peck and
Eula Garrett; and brothers Earl
and Melvin Greene.
Surviving are her son Maurice Dale Poole and his wife,
Dagmar, of Redlands, California; her daughter Patricia Ann
Weast and her husband, Forest,
of Midwest City, Oklahoma; her
daughter-in-law Neva (Loyd)
Poole of Sasche, Texas; her five
grandchildren of whom she was
so very proud, Eric Poole and
wife, Julie; Brooke Poole, Jerry
Poole and wife Cheri; Twyala
Smith and husband John; and
Kimberly Sabella and husband
James; and granddaughter-inlaw Stephanie Weast-Jordan and
husband Daniel. Also surviving
are her eleven much loved great
grandchildren, Dillon, Sean,
and Joshua Poole, Anthony,
Hannah, and Rachel Sabella,
Sayre, Bryer and Schuler Weast,
and Claire and Scott Poole; and
several nieces and nephews.
Services were under the direction of Smith-Phillips Funeral
Home, Ada.

THE ALLEN ADVOCATE, MAY 2, 2013- PAGE 5
At last it’s May and after the
coldest April in years. In fact
it is said to be the 2nd coldest
in history with areas in Alaska
and the rest of the country running about 7 degrees below
normal on average. But that’s
what weather does — it changes. The trick is to not get too
concerned over it — we have
people in this country who will
do that for you, passing laws
and figuring out ways to profit
from weather changes. They
are called liberals and that’s
all I’ll have to say today about
global warming. Besides, I’ve
been out of town.
Pat and I drove up to Tulsa
last Sunday afternoon. Even
with spring being so late it
was a beautiful drive up scenic
SH-48. Well, they say beauty
is in the eye of the beholder
and that’s why I choose scenic “48” as my way to get to
Tulsa on my frequent trips up
there. In Tulsa we attended
a reception for a guy named
Odai — Bishop Francis Afotey
Odai from a place called Accra,
Ghana. Odai is a preacher of
many talents and of many ministries. He is an “overseer” of
several other pastors in Ghana
as well as being a pastor of a
large church there in Accra.
Odai has a television ministry
in Africa as well as coordinating church planting and the
much needed ministry of digging water wells for the people
back in the bush.
May at Last!!
Southern Hills Baptist
Church in Tulsa is involved in
these ministries with members
of the congregation going on
all sorts of mission trips over
there — trips that involve
church building, the water well
digging and more especially
medical missions. One of the
things that caught the eye of
my daughter-in-law, Courtney
Bullard and husband Steve was
the plight of young girls in the
big city of Accra.
Migration to the city from
the bush is ongoing and in that
migration are thousands of
little girls who go to the city
thinking of a better life. Once
there reality takes over and
they realize there are no jobs,
no food and no shelter. Their
dreams of a better life turn into
a nightmare as they fall into the
hands of pimps who cast them
into physical abuse, slavery
and prostitution. It is a brutal
and mean fate and there are
thousands of these young teens
who are owned and exploited
by these evil men.
That’s why Steve and Courtney founded something called
“The Pearl House.” This organization provides food, shelter
and ministry to these “rescued”
girls in a place called “The
Pearl House.” There is a story
related to why Courtney named
it “The Pearl House” and it
Light from
God’s Word
Mark Legg,
Allen church of Christ
What do you talk about
with your friends and family? No, I’m not being nosy;
I don’t want you to tell me!
Of course, God always knows
the topic of your conversation.
Did you realize that the things
you talk about indicate what
is in your heart? Jesus said,
“Those things which proceed
out of the mouth come from the
heart.” (Matt 15:18) Doesn’t
that mean that the words we
speak reveal whether we love
God or this world; the things
we love and value? Do not our
words reveal if we are covetous or immoral? Can’t our
words reveal if we are serving
God or our own pleasures and
lusts; whether we are interested
in spiritual matters or things
of the flesh and of a physical
nature?
Also, the words we speak
have an influence on those who
listen to us. Our words can influence either godliness or evil
in others. Haven’t you been
influenced to buy a certain
product by someone’s words?
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Do
not let any unwholesome talk
come out of your mouths, but
only what is helpful for building others up according to
their needs, that it may benefit
those who listen.” (Eph 4:29)
Most of us are very careful to
ensure that what we do is of
benefit to family and friends,
but just as our actions influence
our associates, so do the words
we speak.
Perhaps you have heard the
saying, “Sticks and stones may
break my bones, but words
will never hurt me!” The truth
is, words can hurt more than
sticks and stones. Jesus said,
“But I tell you that men will
have to give account on the day
of judgment for every careless
word they have spoken. For by
your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will
be condemned.” (Matt 12:3637) Perhaps we need to listen
to the things we say and take
note of what is revealed about
our hearts and make necessary
corrections!

showcases the love and respect
Pearl House People have for
the girls they rescue from the
streets. In Accra, Pearl House
workers literally go out into the
dangerous streets and rescue
these children and take them
to the Pearl House, a sanctuary that can meet their physical needs for food and a clean
bed as well as their spiritual
needs. This ministry has been
described as “One of the most
extraordinary philanthropic
humanitarian endeavors of our
generation.” In the book of
Matthew (13:45-46) there is
a story of a jeweler who was
looking for the finest pearl.
When he found a pearl that
was more beautiful and valuable than any jewel he had ever
seen, the jeweler sold all he had
and bought that pearl, his pearl
of great value.
You can find out more about
this work by going online

writing to The Pearl House at
PO Box 738, Jenks, OK 74037.
I hope all of you are having a
good week and can make it to
your church Sunday. A lot of
good stuff happens there and
you need to be a part of it.

The last after school
program for the school
year met this week so
they celebrated with a
hamburger fry and plenty
of desserts and fun activities. The children who
attended regularly also
have received a neon
green t-shirt.
Even though they don’t
plan to meet on Wednesdays this summer we
hope the children and
their families will continue with the Bible lessons and church activities
here on Sundays. Also,
Falls Creek will soon be
here and we hope to send
a good group to that.
Next Sunday is the First
Sunday Breakfast, which
will be served at 9:00 as
usual. The men, who are
getting to be very good
at this, are the cooks and
everyone is invited.
Jake Hammonds sang
a song titled “An Unspoken Request” this
Sunday. It was one I had
never heard before, but
it has a great story and
message. Jake always
puts much thought into
the songs he sings, and
we know we’ll get to hear
a song that leads us to
think a little outside the
box when he brings the
special music.
Rev. Karch’s message
was from II Corinthians
5:1-21 and I Corinthians
15:1-6. In these passages the Apostle Paul
writes about two things
God wants us to know.
The first is that we don’t
have to be afraid, and the
second is that He wants
us to be comforted.
Life here on the earth is
temporary so there isn’t
any point in getting so
caught up in it all that we
neglect spiritual matters.
The dwelling we live
in here doesn’t begin to
compare to the house we
will have when we arrive
in Heaven. Also the bodies we live in while we’re
on earth aren’t perfect,
but they will be perfect in
heaven. Really!! So we
don’t have to be fearful of
our life on this earth ending. Heaven is gloriously
better.
Even here on earth we
can be clothed in the
Heavenly Spirit though.
God has given us a
guarantee through giving us the Holy Spirit,
who dwells in us and
clothes us spiritually.
By faith, we know what
Jesus would do in every
situation; we just have to
be honest with ourselves
and follow through with
what Jesus is showing us
we should do.
R emember, though,
that we must be living
right for the right reason
and not just for show. We
will be judged for what
we’ve done and receive
what is due us. Do we
want to stand before Jesus having tried to live
as He wanted us to? Or
for sending people to hell
because of the way we
lived our lives?
If we see that we have
been wasting our lives as
Christians, God forgives
those who repent and
want to begin to live in
the way Jesus is showing
them they should live.
When our lives are right,
not to avoid punishment
but because we want to
live in the way that Jesus
approves, we are living
by faith. Therefore, if
anyone is in Christ, they
are a new person.
Christ bought our salvation by dying on the
cross for us. Now we get
to take that salvation and
do something good with
it.
Thank You
Perhaps you sent a lovely card
Or sat quietly in a chair,
Perhaps you sent a funeral spray
If so, we saw it there.
Perhaps you spoke the kindest words
As any friend could say,
Perhaps you were not there at all
Just thought of us that day.
Whatever you did
To console our hearts,
We thank you so very much
Whatever the part.
We appreciate everyone so
very much,

always by on guard against a
legalistic spirit. I could oppose
God by failing to understand
what he is doing. No one could
deny Peter’s devotion or enthusiasm. God was trying to deal
with Peter’s prejudice. Peter
could not imagine God working in a way unfamiliar to his
thinking. God was dramatically
challenging Peter’s worldview.
Remember God says: “My ways
are not your ways...”
I could oppose God by failing
to follow the spirit. Peter didn’t
have the luxury of thinking
about all this, he had to make a
quick decision. Should I just go
with the leading of the Spirit?
Peter was wise enough to sense
that God was in this. We have

We were blessed to have a

night we had a graduation party

family have been members of
the church for years and we wish
her well as she begins her college years. During the morning

things. God asks us to let Him
be in control. Faith is learning
to “walk in the Spirit” into the
unknown. I could oppose God
by thinking I know what is best.
God wants to do a “new thing”
in every generation. Our challenge is to discern what God is
doing and join in.
I could oppose God by objecting to what God is doing. In
order to meet the challenges of
an ever changing world we must
adapt our methods. If we look
for God to do what He has done
in the past we may miss what He
is doing now. God has always
known how to reach the present age. God will either work
through us or around us, but He
will advance His kingdom.

Sorority Tours Mansion
Members of the Allen Sorority and their guests toured the
Grisso Mansion in Seminole
on Saturday, April 20th.
The home, purchased by the
Seminole Nation in August
of 2012, is open for tours by
appointment and available for
wedding, showers and other
parties.
The home was built by “Doc”
Grisso, a pharmacist and translator for the Seminole Indians,
for his third wife, his “Beloved
Maggie.” Construction on the
home began in 1926 and was
finished in 1928 at a cost of
$750,000. In comparison, the
Oklahoma Governor’s Mansion was built at the same time
at a cost of $75,000.
The house has three bedrooms and features an impressive foyer with a fountain,
music room, sitting room, office, kitchen, breakfast room,
formal dining room, butler’s
pantry, sunroom and conservatory in a U-shape built around a
central courtyard. A ballroom,
billiard room, family room
and second small kitchen are
located in the basement, along
with the laundry/drying room
and servant’s workrooms. A
separate building housed the
14-servants and their families.
The Seminole Nation is continuing the restoration project
and will be repairing the reflecting pool and vineyards this
summer.
Following their tour the
ladies were treated to refreshments of cupcakes, cookies
and punch. They then went on
to enjoy lunch before part of
the group returned home and
others continued their day with
a shopping trip to Shawnee.
The first stop was at the
Shawnee Mall but shortly after
arriving they were asked to
leave . . . a bomb scare had the
building evacuated. Unwilling
to let anything stand in the way
of shopping the ladies continued on to other area stores
before returning home that
evening.
Sorority members enjoying

Grisso Mansion in Seminole this past Saturday. Pictured
