The letters and numbers have no intrinsic meaning. For example, Cast A does not have more talent than Cast B, nor vice versa and everyone gets 2 or 3 performances (depending on whether the role is double cast or triple cast). Dancers must perform in their assigned cast for all performances. Rehearsals are absolutely essential and attendance at all rehearsals is mandatory! We work hard to prepare our dancers for a successful and rewarding Nutcracker experience and we depend on each dancer to be present at all rehearsals in order to make this possible. Please know that if you participate in other activities such as sports or music programs, you must plan accordingly so that you do not miss rehearsals. Dancers will be subject to removal from certain roles or the entire performance if they miss rehearsals. - Absences will be allowed for: illness, family emergency, major family events (weddings, etc.), required school functions or other absolutely unavoidable situations. - Absences will generally NOT be allowed for: piano recitals, sports events, birthday parties (especially those you have control over scheduling), tickets to entertainment events, etc. -If you must miss a rehearsal please email Laurel at [email protected]. PLEASE DO NOT BRING SICK CHILDREN TO REHEARSALS. -Email notifications will be sent to students who miss rehearsals to confirm absences. We will ask that you provide a reason for being absent from rehearsal. -Attendance is taken at all rehearsals. Dancers in Level 2 & up must sign themselves in immediately upon arriving at rehearsals. All lower level dancers will be signed in by our staff. -Please do not arrive late for rehearsals! We cannot begin rehearsals until all dancers are in the studio and ready. Tardiness affects everyone’s ability to succeed in their performance! All dancers should arrive a few minutes early for rehearsals, dressed and ready to dance. The studios have limited space so please come prepared, put on your ballet shoes and go directly into the studio for rehearsals. 5 REHEARSALS -The rehearsal schedule is posted on the board in both our Manchester and Windsor studio waiting rooms and there are copies available at the desk. It is also available on our website and a link will be posted on our Facebook page. Please read the schedule carefully and check all days for rehearsals that list your role - you may be used to your role rehearsing on a certain day and then a few weeks later, the day or time of rehearsal may change. -Rehearsal cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced on our main phone number voice mail. Cancellation notices will also be emailed and posted on our Facebook page. -Dancers should come to rehearsals in proper classroom attire with hair in a classical bun. You may wear your ABT uniform leotard, or any solid color leotard & pink footed tights. When rehearsing on pointe, dancers may wear skirts. Please do not wear tshirts, baggy pants, or other layered warm-up clothing to rehearsals. -Please label all your dancer’s items, including shoes, bags, jackets, water bottles, etc. -No food is permitted in the studios. Water is allowed. Chewing gum is not permitted! -For roles that are double or triple cast, all dancers are expected to learn through observation. This means that dancers must watch when the other cast or casts are rehearsing and continue to learn their role by watching. -To guarantee maximum productivity and concentration, we ask that parents and family members stay out of rehearsal spaces. -All dancers must be picked up within fifteen minutes of the end of a rehearsal and must wait inside the building for their ride. Dancers must use the front entrance to enter and exit the building. COSTUMES -Our Wardrobe Mistress, Tiffany Nichols, and our dedicated wardrobe staff and volunteers design, create, alter and maintain all costumes for The Nutcracker. We are pleased to provide these professional quality costumes for all of our cast members. -All cast members must pay a $20 Wardrobe Fee. The fee is due at the time of auditions. Checks should be made out to CCB. -Costume Fittings are scheduled throughout the rehearsal time period and are posted on the bulletin board and on the website. Costume fittings are mandatory. Please do not miss your assigned costume fitting. If you have extenuating circumstances and must miss a scheduled fitting please email Laurel at [email protected]. -Cast members are responsible for providing their own tights, trunks, etc. (unless otherwise noted on the chart). All items can be purchased at Dance Village in Manchester (860)645-6606. 6 NUTCRACKER COSTUME CHECK & PHOTO DAY All cast members are required to attend Costume Check & Photo Day. This day serves multiple functions: - Costumes undergo a final check for fit and appearance - Dressing room staff checks for correct tights, shoes and hair - Cast members have their portrait taken in full costume by our professional photographer, Arthur Simoes. Dancer portraits will be available for viewing and purchase on the Shutterfly website. More info will be emailed about how to view & purchase portraits. The date for Photo Day is Sunday November 22. The exact Photo Day schedule is included in the rehearsal schedule. We also will have professional photographers from Exclusive Image Portraits photographing our Nutcracker performances. Please see hair sheets for detailed information. 9 MANDATORY REHEARSAL WEEK & PERFORMANCES -The week of November 30 – December 6 is MANDATORY REHEARSAL WEEK. - All classes will be cancelled this week. - Absolutely NO rehearsal absences are allowed at any time during this week! -Students with outstanding tuition balances will not be allowed to perform unless payment arrangements are made prior to November 30th. -We make every effort to run on schedule during this week, but unforeseen circumstances do sometimes arise that will affect the finish times for dancers. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this. Clothes, Hair and Make-up at the theater All items brought to the theater should be labeled with the dancer’s name! *Please do not send anything of value backstage at all! -Dancers in Level 1 & under should come to the theater with their performance tights and trunks worn under their clothing. Please send your dancer in comfortable sweatpants and a zip front sweatshirt or button down shirt. No pull over shirts please! -All dancers should arrive at the theater with their hair & makeup fully done (except for lipstick). Please send all makeup with the dancer in case touch ups are needed. - For warm up classes, all dancers in Level 3 & up should wear regular ballet classroom attire. CCB leotard uniforms are not required, but dancers should wear solid color leotards and ballet slippers. Excessive warm-up outfits, leg warmers, scarves, socks, gloves, slippers, shorts, teeshirts, or other non-dance items are not permitted. Dancers are to look neat at all times. -Make sure your child eats a well-balanced, nutritious meal to keep up their stamina throughout the rehearsal and performance process. You can send a light (non-messy) snack and bottle of water with your child. Please do not send colored drinks, gooey items, etc. No peanut products are allowed in the dressing room. Please label water bottles. -Please send quiet activities and games labeled with your child’s name. Do not send markers or pens. Dancers in Pre-ballet through Level 1 should have the following items in their bags for all dress rehearsals and performances: STAGE MAKEUP IN A LABELED ZIPLOC BAG HAIRBRUSH TIGHTS, SHOES & OTHER ITEMS REQUIRED FOR THEIR ROLE EXTRA PAIR OF TIGHTS HEALTHY SNACK & WATER BOTTLE QUIET GAME OR ACTIVITY Dancers in Level 2 & up should have the following items in their bags for all dress rehearsals and performances: HAIR ELASTICS HAIR NETS HAIR PINS & BOBBY PINS HAIRSPRAY & GEL BRUSH & COMB SPRAY BOTTLE W/WATER BAND AIDS DANCE CLOTHING FOR WARM-UP CLASS CLEAN BALLET SLIPPERS CLEAN TIGHTS (bring an extra pair) FLESH-COLORED LEOTARD TRUNKS (for girls) DANCE BELT (for boys) REQUIRED ITEMS FOR ROLES FACIAL TISSUES NEEDLE & THREAD SMALL MIRROR Q-TIPS BABY WIPES DEODERANT BOTTLE OF WATER HEALTHY, NON-MESSY SNACKS 10 Arriving at the theater All cast members must enter Manchester High School through the Stage Door! Parents bringing cast members must park in the Summit Street lot and follow our signage and staff to the proper entrance. DANCERS MAY NOT ENTER THE SCHOOL THROUGH THE MAIN LOBBY DOORS! All dancers in Level 1 and under must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver and report to the sign-in table. All dancers in Level 2 and up must sign in at their assigned dressing room door and remain in their dressing room. Leaving the theater Level 1 & under: Once your dancer is done, parents must sign them out at the sign-in table either during Intermission or at the end of the Dress Rehearsal/Performance. Level 2 & 3: Once your dancer is done, parents must report to the Level 2/3 dressing room to meet your dancer. Dancers sign themselves out. Please understand that there may be a short wait at the end of the Dress Rehearsal/Performance to allow the younger dancers to be picked up. Please wait in the upper hallway until staff directs you to the dressing room. Level 4/5/6: Once your dancer is done parents may meet their dancer in the lobby or the upper hallway. Dancers sign themselves out. Parents & visitors are not permitted in the dressing room. Parent Observation of Dress Rehearsals - Parents, friends, and family members are not allowed in any of the backstage areas (dressing rooms, wings, etc.) for any purpose before, during, or after dress rehearsals and performances unless officially volunteering backstage. There is a very small Parent Area in the back few rows of the theater for parents who would rather stay than drop off their performers. Please note that these are closed rehearsals and no friends or extended family members are allowed in the theater. Videotaping and Photography - The videotaping of dress rehearsals and performances is strictly prohibited. Due to contractual agreements, the only videotaping allowed is by Connecticut Concert Ballet, which is for archival purposes. Any other video-taping or recording of rehearsals or performances is strictly prohibited. A professional DVD will be available for order. - Still photography of any kind is prohibited onstage, backstage, in the wings and from the audience during performances! This includes cell phones, tablets, digital cameras, etc. Not only does it adversely affect lighting design, it also distracts cast and audience members. This rule also includes the dressing room areas. Please remind family and friends of this rule. -CCB requests that you not post any video clips of Nutcracker rehearsals or performances on any social media sites. If you choose to post or share pictures on social media, please use discretion. Many of our dancers and their parents have requested not to be photographed. Post pictures of your children only! 11 Dancer Theater Etiquette (for dancers in Level 2 & up) In the dressing room: 1. Take Responsibility for Yourself and Your Costume - Check yourself in when you enter the Dressing Room. Costumes should be handled with care and hung back up after changing. Headpieces and accessories should be returned to their bag. Hangers are to remain on the orange travel racks. Do NOT “preset” your costumes on your chair, makeup stands, etc. Feel free to mark your hanger and/or bag so it’s easier for you to recognize. Costumes are not to be in the bathroom or lobby. No stage make-up in the lobby during the show. Be sure you have all your required tights, shoes, etc. Label your personal items! Clean your space before leaving after the show. Don’t forget to check the floor! 2. Show Respect for Others - Turn your cell phone off and put it away when you leave for warm-up class. Do not set your phone to vibrate. Cell phones are to remain completely off until after the show. Conversation should be quiet and respectful. No loud talking, no playing of music (unless with ear phones), and no electronic devices that make sound. No disruptive behavior (running, horsing around, etc.) When someone asks for the group’s attention, acknowledge that you are listening. When someone provides information or direction to the group, acknowledge that you heard (thank you). If you cannot say something with kindness, don’t say it. If you need help, ask for it. 3. Keep your Head in the Game - Beginning with warm-up class, you are expected to remain focused and attentive to the task at hand. Stay where you are supposed to be. Do not roam around the building. In the wings: - Do not use the stage left back hallway door. This year, we are only using the stage right back hallway door and the stage-left side door (with the stairs). - Doors must remain closed during a blackout! - Doors must remain closed during quiet music or silence. (If you didn’t make it in before the Pas, you have to wait until after.) - Do not touch the legs (curtains), props or any preset items! - Stay behind the tapeline! - Absolutely no flash photography. - Follow directions of Tech Crew, Backstage Managers, etc. - No cell phones! - No talking! Silent Clapping Only! 12 NUTCRACKER TICKETS -Nutcracker tickets will go on sale the week of November 2nd. -We offer both GENERAL ADMISSION and PREFERRED FRONT & CENTER seating options for all performances: Child/Student/Senior and Adult tickets are general admission seating. The lobby will be open 1 hour before the show and a line will form to enter the theater. The theater doors will be open 30 minutes before the show. Ushers have the right to request that you move seats in order to accommodate other guests. Preferred Front & Center tickets are reserved seats in the front 15 rows in the center section of the theater. Seats will be assigned in the order the ticket purchases are received in. There is no need to arrive early with these tickets. The theater doors will be open 30 minutes before the performance. -Ticket Prices: Child/Student/Senior Adult Preferred Front & Center Advance Ticket Sales $15 $25 $35 Door Sales $18 $28 $38 -How to purchase tickets: Online: Tickets can purchased through the secure online shopping cart on our website. You can access the shopping cart by going directly to www.ctconcertballet.org or to our special Nutcracker website at www.connecticutnutcracker.com Order Forms: You can also order tickets by filling out an Advance Ticket Order Form and placing it in the drop box at the Manchester studio or mailing it in to the studio. In Person: Tickets can be purchased in person at one of our two ticket vendor outlets: Dance Village in Manchester or Hairdresser on Fire in Windsor At the Door: Tickets will be on sale one hour prior to the start of the performance in the theater lobby on the day of the show. -Our Nutcracker Ticket Info Line is: (860) 418-7294 -Cancellation Policy All sales are final. Ticket purchases are not refundable. Inclement weather will not affect performances unless the Governor declares an official state of emergency. NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES. -Who needs a Ticket? All audience members including: parents, family members and friends must have a ticket to see the production of The Nutcracker. We do offer some special perks to our lobby volunteers. Please see the volunteer section for more info. 13 VOLUNTEERS: We have several different types of volunteer opportunities at the Dress Rehearsals and the Performances themselves. All signs-ups are done online and will be found under the Cast Info tab on our website as we get closer to performance time. Here are the volunteer positions we will be seeking to fill: Backstage Positions -Sign-in / Sign-out (Dress Rehearsals & Performances) You will be responsible for signing in & out all of our young cast members. (Having two people filling these slots allows us to ensure that each person will be able to watch their dancer from the wings.) -Dressing Room Helpers (Dress Rehearsals & Performances) You will be responsible for keeping all dancers in your group quiet and organized while waiting in the dressing area. You will also assist the dancers with dressing, as needed. Dressing Room Managers will be on-hand to provide guidance and support. -Outside Traffic Directors (Dress Rehearsals only) You will be responsible for assisting parents in finding the correct parking lot, locating the Stage Door and generally finding their way around the outside of the theater building. -Info Greeters (Dress Rehearsals only) You will be responsible for directing parents to the appropriate location inside the building and answering general questions. Lobby Positions (A Manager will be at each area to show volunteers what they need to do.) Ushers Lobby Boutique Sweet Shop Flower Shop Telegram Sales Volunteer Perks We know that the biggest reward of volunteering is being able to actively support your dancer, not to mention the fun of being involved in putting on this amazing production. However, in order to show our appreciation for your time and effort, we are also able to offer the following perks: ∞ Backstage Helpers can watch their group dancing from the wings. Once everyone in your group has been picked up by their parents, you are welcome to watch the rest of the show in the theater. Most of these positions require you to be the last one in before the start of the show and the first one out once Intermission begins. Your volunteer badge is your ticket. Nutcracker Sweet Shop Our Nutcracker Sweet Shop is one of the most popular tables in our lobby. As a way to support our school, we ask that each cast member sign up to bring one item for our Sweet Shop. A signup sheet will be available online on our volunteer site. 14 HAIRSTYLES High Classical Bun Materials List – Hairspray and/or hair gel – Hair pins (Thicker type with plastic tips.) *Note: These are “U” Shaped & look like this– Bobby pins *Note: These are flat & look like this– Heave duty extra strong elastic bands – Fine tooth comb & bristly brush – Hair nets (Fine net with elastic edges, should be same color as hair.) 1. To start the process, start with wet hair. This will give you better control over the hair. Gather the hair and pull it tightly back. Apply hair gel if you need more control over the hair. 2. Use a hair brush to smooth out rough or uneven areas. Form a high pony tail by brushing the hair up from the jaw line to the top part of the back of the head. This will form a high bun. The placement of the pony tail determines the placement of the bun. 3. Use a strong & thick elastic hair band to secure the pony tail. A tidy and tight pony tail with hair drawn snugly back is the key to making a good ballet bun. You can even use two elastics if need be. 4. Apply more water, gel or hairspray to keep the hair neat. If you have any lumps or bumps, you can smooth them back toward the ponytail with the bristly brush. Use bobby pins to pin down bumps or lumps near the elastic band (they will end up being covered by the bun) 5. Coil the pony tail into a flat circle on the head (not too tight so that the bun starts to stick out like a doorknob). A very flat coil is preferable. 6. Use hair pins all around the coil to secure it to the rest of the hair. Slide each pin through the outer part of the coil, then into the base of the bun. (You should grab the outer part of bun with hairpin, pull out from the center and then push back in toward the bun.) 7. Wrap a fine hair net around the bun. Keep twisting and wrapping so that the hair net tightly secures the bun. Add a few more pins to anchor the bun. 8. With long thick hair, you may end up with a bun that will protrude too much. A flatter bun is preferable. To flatten, remove all pins; the hair net will hold the bun. Then flatten the bun and re-pin all around the bun. 9. For extra hold, when the bun and hair are all secure, use lots of hairspray to finish. 15 Gingerbread Girl Hair All Gingerbread Girls need to have their hair in 2 BRAIDS for performances. How to do it: -Start with wet hair! -Apply hair gel or detangling spray to smooth. -Part hair evenly down the middle from front to back. -Hold back one half of hair with elastic. -Take the other section and use a bristly brush to smooth hair and start braid behind ear (do not put elastic here…begin braid here!) -Tightly braid until about 1 inch of hair is left -Attach tight fitting thin elastic band to bottom of braid (please don’t use colored elastics, band should match hair). -Repeat other side. -Finish with lots of hairspray to keep hair slick and neat! *No bangs please! If your dancer has bangs just slick them down and back with the rest of hair as you brush it back before braiding. *If your dancer’s hair is too short to braid please see Wendy! 16 Party Girl Hair Instructions All party girls need to wear their hair in a “fancy” hairdo for the performance. We prefer for most party girls to wear their hair in one of 4 optional styles: 1. Front half pulled back in a high pony and back curled into pipe or barrel curls. 2. 2 high ponytails on the side with curls 3. High “updo” with curls on the top of the head 4. 2 looped braids Instructions for curling hair (Styles 1, 2, 3 below): -Start with freshly washed hair. -Pull the hair into chosen style (front half of hair back into a tight ponytail at the top back of head, 2 high side ponytails or 1 high ponytail). You should do this when the hair is wet or damp so that the front is very slick (Use lots of gel to smooth out all loose tendrils and bangs.) -The rest of hair should then be dried. -Next take a small section of hair (the smaller the better) and apply a holding product to that section of hair (The Got2b Glued line works awesome). Roll the hair tightly all the way up to the head. Continue section by section all the way around head. -To get curls that stay in, dancers usually have to sleep in the curlers. Don’t plan on doing your dancers’ hair too close to performance time! -The next day, unroll each curl carefully and re-shape curls around your finger if needed. Spray each curl with an extra strong hairspray, but be very careful not to wet the hair with the spray! Gather the hair into a large hair net to prevent curls from falling. Another option is to purchase a hairpiece. *You can get hairpieces at: -Dance Village (they are now carrying really nice longer curled hairpieces) -www.chearleaderhairpieces.com (long curled style is called “Hottie Style”, 2 pony style is called “Piggies Pigtails”, single high curled pony is called “Barrel Curls” or “Toddlers Tottle” -Please try to have your dancer’s hair done for the Dress Rehearsal! If this is not possible because of time constraints, school, etc, then please send her to an earlier rehearsal with her hair done so that Wendy can check the style and approve. If you have questions feel free to ask! And don’t worry, not every child has to look exactly the same. We just like their hair to look neat and formal, not casual looking. 17 Here are some photos of the different styles: 1. High “updo” with curls on the top of the head 18 Party Boy Wig Instructions Our Party Boys wear “boy-looking” wigs, as does our Fritz. Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what this looks like. CCB will provide individual wigs for each Party Boy. No dancers will share wigs. -You are required to purchase an inexpensive Wig Cap from us for your dancer to wear under her wig. The cost is $3 and you can pay for your wig cap at the front desk. This cap will remain with your dancer’s costume and will be individually wrapped & labeled. Dancers will not share wigs or wig caps.Party Boys will need to wear their hair smooth and close to their head (in a very flat, low bun or French braid that is pinned down to head tightly under the wig cap). Here is a pic of how you can braid and secure the hair under the wig: 19 Clara’s Friends hair info: Clara’s Friends wear a curled hairpiece over their high classical bun. The hairpiece we would like them to have is available here: www.cheerleaderhairpieces.biz The style is called "The Piggies Pigtails" set and it is only $28.99. This set comes with 2 hairpieces but most dancers will only need one so we encourage you to coordinate with another Clara’s Friend who has your hair color so you can split the purchase. There are many colors to choose from and hopefully the pictures will help you find a good match. The hair piece will seem small when you open the package and will not appear to fit over the bun but it can be pinned directly over the bun and works well. Young dancers do not need heavy foundation. ●Powder (loose or pressed): Apply directly over foundation. This is used so that dancers don’t look “shiny” ●Eyeshadow: Use a neutral palette of tans, browns, or deep plums. Apply medium color to entire lid, lighter highlight color at top of lid just under brow and darker color in crease of eye. No blues, bright purples or greens!!! ●Eyeliner: Black or dark brown pencil. Be sure to apply good coverage all over face for an even and matte look. ●Powder (loose or pressed): Apply directly over foundation. This is used to set foundation and prevent shine. ●Eyeshadow: Use a neutral palette of tans, browns, or deep plums. Apply medium color to entire lid, lighter white highlight color at top of lid just under brow and darker color in crease of eye. No blues, bright purples or greens!!! ●Eyeliner: Black liquid or gel eyeliner. Apply thin line to top lash line and slightly below bottom lash line. Do not extend or wing out eyeliner too far. Bottom line should start below the pupil, not in the inner corner of eye. ●False Eyelashes: Level 4 & 5 dancers should wear false eyelashes. ●Mascara: Black or brown. Apply heavily to top and bottom lashes. ●Eyebrow pencil: Use a shade that matches brow. Blonde dancers should darken brows slightly. ●Blush: Use a pinky/rosy color. Avoid orange & brown tones!
