Everglades Prep Tops MCCS
In Gridiron Debut
Keys Gate, South Dade Fall; Coral Shores Mounts
Comeback; Southridge Dominates

In front of a large crowd on
both sides of the field,
Everglades Prep entered their
first game in school history
looking to make a statement
against fellow first-timers
Miami Community Charter.
What followed was a
resounding 54-8 victory at
Harris Field for Everglades
Prep, capped off by several
impressive plays.
The game started well for
Miami Community Charter as
the Lions were able to stop
the ground game from
Everglades Prep, but an equal
defensive effort resulted in a
Keys Gate quarterback

Popular Racing Series Makes
First Visit To South Florida
As many of you may or may
not know, Homestead-Miami
Speedway is “hot” more than
280 days out of the year, not
just in the tropical temperatures, but in
the events that
occur at the
track. That’s
not including
our biggest
weekend, Ford

I am always excited to
showcase new and exciting
events going on at the track.
This weekend, we are hosting
a new type of motorsports
competition. Formula DRIFT
is holding Round 3 of their
Championship season at
Homestead-Miami Speedway
this Friday and Saturday, May
30th and 31st. The cars will
be utilizing Turns 2, 3, 4 and
5 of the infield 2.21-mile road
course, as they drift around
the corners in front of a panel
of judges.
Formula DRIFT is different
than most of the motorsports
competitions that are held at
the Speedway. Rather than
competing based on lap times
and horsepower speed, these
cars are judged on an aesthetic criteria.
The action of drifting is a
learned technique in which
the driver pushes the car to its
limits while maintaining control for the full length of the
curve. Think of the drivers in
the “Fast and the Furious”
movies (although these drivers won’t be racing each other
for time).
A car is drifting when the
front wheels are pointing in
the opposite direction of the
turn – for example, the car is
turning left but the wheels are
pointed right and vice versa.

Westminster Christian Football Schedule Announced
Softball, Baseball Season Start Dates Released; Upper Keys Baseball Camp Set For June

Westminster Christian football looks to make another state
final four run in 2014-2015, having announced their upcoming
schedule.
The season will
kick off with a
preseason game at
Westminster
Academy on
August 22, with
their season opener at Harvest
Community
School taking
place on August
29.
Warriors fans
will be able to
watch their team
at home for the
first time on

Christian in the Warriors’
homecoming game.
Upper Keys To Hold Baseball Camp
Youth baseball players ages 6 to 12 can learn baseball skills
from Coral Shores High coaches, as well as, current and former players. The annual Hurricane Baseball Camp will take
place beginning on June 9th at Key Lark Community Park.

Tarpon Prove Tough To Catch

With the calm winds of May finally
arriving, tarpon was on my mind, and
Dean, who has fished with me many
times, wanted another shot after a brief
encounter with a tarpon last time.
We started fishing a school of rolling
tarpon and were hooked up by 7 a.m. to
a nice 80 pound tarpon that gave us one
big jump then stayed deep the rest of the
time. Dean fought the fish for 20 exciting minutes as the fish tried almost every
trick in the book to break us off on jetties, points and rocks.
Having survived his efforts we were
confident he was in the bag, just a matter
of time. Twenty minutes into the fight
with the fish right under the boat he spit
out the hook. Bad tarpon! We got a second hit, but no hook up. With boat traffic
increasing, we left the area and fished
the beaches where there were lots of tar-

pon rolling, but no hook ups. We finished off the day catching Dean’s first
shark on the flats and having some shots
at big barracudas.
On another trip, fishing out of Key
Biscayne, the goal was to get on tarpon
in order for Greg to the experience the
silver range at the end of the line. While
the action started slow, it got better by 7
a.m. when he hooked a monster 100
pound tarpon. Three huge jumps later
and the tarpon was off to the races. He
was out over 150 yards before we knew
it.
As the fight settled, we kept it on a
short leash close to the boat and laughed
as he dragged my skiff around. However,
15 minutes into the fight the tarpon made
a dash for a series of buoys where he
eventually broke us off. Heart broken we
re-drifted the area and got a second bite,
but the fish came off instantly. We ended
the day fishing for sharks.
