There really is a summer of sport going on in Glossop this year.
Even though it’s only May, it already feels like
Glossop has been spoilt with the fantastic
sporting achievements that the town has
enjoyed so far…and it’s not over yet!
What’s more, parents are welcome to wait in the recently
restructured club house, which has a fully licensed bar and
regularly puts on summer barbecues which can be enjoyed
in the glorious sunshine. What more do you need after a busy
week at work?
Glossop Cricket Club’s season is just beginning and they’ve got
a bumper series of events on the run. As well as their regular
first team action, whose season started in April, there are some
corking kids’ activities too.
GCC’s junior teams have a smashing record too. There’s groups
for all ages, which see them competing in both the Lancashire
and Tameside Leagues. And just last year, the Under 17s won
the league and play-offs, having won the league at every age
group since they were in the Under 10s group – a fantastic
achievement!
Friday night’s Junior Training Sessions are open to all primary
school age children from May, right through to mid-August.
In fact, your child may even have seen GCC Chairman Alan
Garlick, and Junior Co-ordinator Roger Mays at their school, as
they are currently giving presentations to local schools about
what GCC has to offer.
The Junior Training Sessions are a fabulous opportunity to
learn the basics of cricket in a pleasant, safe environment
with ECB qualified coaches at the ready to help any budding
cricket champs.

Glossop Cricket Club’s season is just
beginning and they’ve got a bumper
series of events on the run.
You’ll also find many of the junior players representing Derbyshire,
Lancashire or Cheshire at either district or county level too, which
just goes to show the quality of coaching at the club. In particular,

Cameron Ball and Matt Sonczak (both 16) are both representing
the Derbyshire Academy and have had great seasons, so a big
well done to them is in order!
That’s not all. With two adult sides per season playing across
the Lancashire County League, there’s regular weekend
matches too. There are currently plans in motion to merge a
number of leagues across the Greater Manchester area to
create a new regional pyramid structure, and Glossop are
hopeful of being in the top division. Exact details are still being
worked out, but will hopefully be implemented in time for the
2016 season.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that cricket is a ‘boys-only’ sport
either. There’s plenty at the club to ‘bowl the maidens over’.
GCC will welcome Alice Dyson, 16, into the second team this
season, which will keep her busy as as well as studying for her
GCSEs, she is also currently playing alongside the Derbyshire
Ladies team too.
In addition to this, Glossop will be hosting a T20 match
featuring Lancashire ladies v Netherland ladies on Sunday
2nd August.
We’re sure you’ll agree that there’s every
reason to run out the house and get
yourself up to Glossop Cricket Club
this summer. Who knows, maybe
we’ll catch you there!

Glossop Music Festival
Glossoplife
Glossop Music Festival was
founded in 2013 by Glossop
resident and violinist, Tom Elliott.
As a former member of the
Academy of St Martin in the
Fields, Tom has played in some of
the leading concerts halls in the
world but settled in Glossop in
2004 with his wife Katherine Baker Principal Flute with
the Hallé Orchestra – to start a family. He now works
locally as a violin teacher.
Together with some close friends from his days at the Royal
Academy of Music, such as Matthew Truscott, leader of the
Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, pianist Viv McLean
and conductor, Chris George, Tom launched Glossop Music
Festival in October 2013. Operating under the auspices of the
Glossop Concert Society, a registered charity which has put
on professional classical music concerts for over twenty-five
years, the Festival aims to bring the highest quality of music
8 • Glossop Life
to the widest possible audience through a year-long series of
concerts, comprising a Summer Festival together with one-off
concerts throughout the year.
Tom explains:
“We intend to make Glossop Music Festival a truly
international concert series and an annual fixture in the diary
of both musicians and audiences. We will also be a festival for
the people of Glossop, welcoming young and old, newcomers
as well as aficionados, to world-class classical music in a
relaxed atmosphere. As Carl Sagan said of his desire to share
his love of science, “When you’re in love you want to tell the
world”. We feel the same about classical music.”
Glossop Music Festival is bringing outstanding instrumentalists
and singers to our beautiful corner of the Peak District to
perform in the Parish Church, Old Glossop. Audiences have
recently enjoyed a superb piano recital by Viv McLean and a
wonderful cello recital by Sarah McMahon. Assistant Artistic

Director, opera singer and Glossop resident, Claire Surman,
says “Easter Monday saw our most ambitious project to date
- a highly acclaimed chamber performance of the St John
Passion. Thanks to some close friendships formed during
my days at the Royal College of Music, and more recently at
Glyndebourne, our amazing orchestra was joined by nine of the
country’s finest voices in this repertoire. It was a truly
remarkable evening”.
This season’s Summer Festival is taking place from June
24th-27th, 2015. Concerts will include Beethoven’s Fourth
Piano Concerto; Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony; Bach’s
Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, and Dvořák’s Serenade for
Strings. Following on from their brilliant performance of the
Mendelssohn Octet in The Wheatsheaf on Easter Sunday,
the players will also be giving a series of free chamber music
concerts in some of Glossop’s pubs, including The Oakwood.
Glossop Music Festival is also reaching out to the young people
in the High Peak, introducing them to the joys of classical music
and helping to develop audiences and musicians of the future,
which is evident as under 16s are eligible for free tickets for the
opening, closing and late night concerts.

Glossop Music Festival
Why not become involved with Glossop Music
Festival as a Friend, Sponsor or Advertiser?
Glossop Music Festival is keen to welcome supporters
at a variety of levels, ranging from individual Friends
(£50 per person, per year) to sponsorship and/or
advertising packages. Among the benefits on offer are
complimentary or discounted tickets, preferential seating,
programmes and advertising. Sponsors and their guests
may also enjoy hospitality in the sponsor’s area before
the concert, during the interval and after the concert,
when they can meet some of the performers as well as
special guests of the Festival. Details can be found on the
website.
Each year has seen concerts specifically for children and 2015
is no different. This year there will be four schools’ concerts
during which the small chamber orchestra will play Summer
from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and a Telemann concerto that will
involve up to 60 beginner violinists from local schools. This
programme will be repeated in a concert for the general public
at 11am on Saturday, 27th June. Children of all ages (and their
families) are encouraged to come and enjoy the performance.
Says Claire Surman: “We are
extremely grateful for the generous
support of individuals and businesses
thus far, which has enabled us to
attract some of the best performers in
the business. We are hoping to build
on that support to enable us to keep
developing our programming.”
Mike Bull, one of the Trustees of the Concert Society, says:
“The fact that we can get such big names to Glossop is
testament to the determination and spirit, not to mention the
contacts, of our Artistic Directors, Tom and Claire. What we are
achieving here in Glossop is incredibly exciting.”

Marple Sixth Form College celebrated the success of
the class of 2014 at its annual awards evening.
There was a party atmosphere on the night as students caught
up with each other. Most of the students had just completed
their first term at university and were keen to share their
experiences with their friends and former teachers.
Many students achieved outstanding success in their
examination results last summer which meant they were able
to progress to their first choice university. Abigail Boardman
from Hadfield, who attended St Philip Howard Catholic School
received the PE award. She gained an A* grade in PE, A in Law
and Distinction* in BTEC sport. Sophia Canale from Gee Cross
received the award for German A Level gaining an A grade in this
as well as A grades in English Literature and History.
In her opening address, Principal Jenny Singleton paid tribute to
the work of the staff at the college and to the support provided
by parents and carers, “It is wonderful that so many of our
former students, parents, carers and members of our college
community have come together to celebrate the success of our
students. Whilst the awards evening tonight is focused upon
those who have achieved individual academic excellence, it is
worth noting that last year was the most successful year in the
history of our college.”

St Philip Howard Catholic
School to become a
sponsored academy
In March this year, the Department for Education
(DfE) approved a proposal put forward by
the Nottingham Roman Catholic Diocesan
Education Service (NRCDES) to sponsor St
Philip Howard Catholic School as a Catholic
Academy. This dynamic and innovative journey
for St Philip Howard will see them become a
sponsored academy from September 1st 2015.
Assistant Director for NRCDES, Neil Weightman, says:
“We are delighted to be able to work in this partnership
to ensure that the actions already in place to raise
standards are continued at a fast pace. The whole
community will have a local Catholic school of high
standards in which they can have confidence and be
proud.”
At St Philip Howard’s last Ofsted monitoring visit
the HMI Inspectors commented that: “Leaders
and managers have responded quickly to the
recommendations set out in the report. They have
worked with external partners to devise a detailed plan
of action to improve the school.
“A number of immediate actions have been taken.
These include the introduction of a behaviour
management system and a new marking and
assessment policy. During the visits to classrooms it
was noted that teachers make good use of assessment
information on students’ prior and current attainment
and progress to plan lessons.”

James Patterson announces a further £250,000
donation to independent bookshops in the UK and
Ireland taking his total donation to £500,000
This isn’t the first time that Patterson has endeavoured to
help independent bookshops. In a similar initiative back in
September 2013, Patterson pledged $1 million to bookshops
across the US.
A FURTHER 68 INDEPENDENT BOOKSHOPS HAVE BEEN
GRANTED £120,000 FROM THE ORIGINAL £250,000 FUND
ANNOUNCED IN JUNE 2014
James says:
Bestselling author and bookshop devotee, James Patterson,
has announced plans to donate a further £250,000 to local
independent bookshops, with Glossop’s very own Bay Tree
Books being chosen as one of the beneficiaries.
Patterson’s first donation of £250,000 was awarded back in
June 2014, and he has since pledged the same amount to
any independent bookshop with a dedicated children’s book
section.
Over £130,000 has already been allocated to 73 independent
bookshops across the UK and Ireland and the remaining
£120,000 will be allocated to a further 68 bookshops,
enabling even more initiatives to get underway to help get
children reading.
Donations will be used to fund ventures ranging from
refurbishment and expansion of children’s sections, to
organising a bedtime reading project and pyjama day and to
creating a mobile ‘book bus’. The grants will allow carpet,
shelving and signage to be replaced and will ensure further
outreach to local schools, as well as providing the means for
in-store events and book clubs for children.
Each of the bookshops will be eligible for a grant of between
£250 and £5,000. Patterson is committed to raising attention to
the important contributions of independent bookshops, and is
especially concerned with inspiring children to become
lifelong readers.
14 • Glossop Life
“I have been completely overwhelmed by just how many
people have applied for the grants second time round, and
yet again have been impressed and enthused by the calibre
of the applications. It’s been very exciting to see the ideas
from the first round in action. I have again worked to
identify independent bookshops for whom this money may
make a difference and I’m excited to follow their progress. I
can’t wait to see what the UK and Ireland’s incredible and
pioneering bookshops propose for next year.”
Tim Walker, President of The Booksellers Association, says:
“We are very much looking forward to seeing the grant funding
being implemented by the successful bookshops. We are
thrilled that so many UK and Irish indies have shown such
creativity and passion in their applications. For the lucky shops,
the James Patterson money will make a real difference to
how they reach children and encourage them to read. The
announcement of a further donation of £250,000 is fantastic
news for bookshops and anyone who loves reading. We are
delighted that James Patterson is continuing to act on his love
of bookshops and his appreciation of their vital importance to
cultural and community life.”

– film-makers do!
Useful info
As atmospheric as it is
beautiful, Haddon Hall
has long been popular
with film makers (largely
of the costume-drama
making kind) and its credits include “Jane Eyre”, "Elizabeth”,
"Pride & Prejudice” “Death Comes to Pemberley” and the cult
classic “The Princess Bride”.
Despite having been passed by marriage through a number of
great families, Haddon Hall has never been bought or sold.
Family facts
The Doomsday Book records the first known owner of
the manor of Nether Haddon as being William Peverel, the
illegitimate son of William the Conqueror. The Vernon family
acquired it by marriage in the 13th Century where it remained
until it passed to the Manners family following more than a little
romantic intrigue...
Dorothy Vernon & John Manners – a real life fairytale?
Romantic legend has it that Dorothy Vernon, second daughter
of Sir George Vernon, disappeared from a family ball at Haddon
Hall to marry John Manners (her second cousin) because her
father disapproved of the match. There is little evidence to
prove or disprove the tale but it has become the stuff of folklore
and the subject of a number of novels and plays. We do know
that by the time of his death George must have been on friendly
terms with his daughter as she and her husband inherited
Haddon Hall. Their descendants, the Dukes of Rutland, own it
to this day.
Opening Times: Haddon Hall opens daily from now until
September 30th, although it is closed on May 30th & 31st.
The Hall opens at 12pm until 5pm, last entry at 4pm.
Amenities: Car park, gift shop and tea rooms.
Make an evening of it: Haddon Hall is open until 8pm on the
last Thursday of June, July and August.
Sat nav: Don’t plug your postcode into a sat nav, head for
Bakewell and follow the signs from the A6.
Access: Haddon Hall is set
on a hill and there are lots of
steps to contend with, so
access for visitors with
disabilities and
wheelchair users
is restricted.
Assistance dogs only.
Nearby attractions: Bakewell,
Arbor Low, Bakewell and the Monsal Trail.

Restoration
The Hall fell into disuse in the early 18th Century when the
Manners family moved to Belvoir Castle. It lay in its 16th
Century condition until the 1920s when another John Manners
(the 9th Duke of Rutland) set about its meticulous restoration.
The Hall has been painted by various artists including
watercolourist Frederick Booty.

appropriate way, and enjoy the retirement you'd hoped for.
Capstone Financial
Management Ltd has recently
announced the opening of
its Glossop office. A Partner
Practice of St. James’s Place
Wealth Management, a
FTSE 100 company, the
Director's of Capstone
Financial Management,
Andrew Williamson and Sarah Guest take a personal, knowledge-based
approach to financial management. They believe the recent pension
regulation changes make it more crucial than ever that people seek
expert financial advice to avoid making decisions that might adversely
affect their future financial security.
“These changes have empowered a generation of retirees to do much
more than they could previously, but many people will be confused
about what is best for their individual circumstances. With many
high street banks moving away from giving investment advice we
want to ensure residents in Glossop and the surrounding areas have a
financial adviser they can trust and who can offer the right advice in
the awake of these radical changes” Andrew Williamson, Director at
Capstone Financial Management.
So what do the new pension changes mean?
From 6 April 2015, all members of a defined contribution arrangement
who are aged 55 or over will be able to withdraw their money as they
see fit, subject to the rules of their scheme. The tax-free lump sum limit
of up to 25% of the fund will remain, with the rest of the fund taxable
as income.

INCOME OPTIONS
BEFORE
APRIL 2015

Take as much income from a drawdown
plan as you like without meeting set criteria
Take payments directly from your pension
without first entering drawdown or
purchasing an annuity
Up to 25% of the fund tax free once you

Option to buy an annuity with some or all
of your pension fund
In theory, this flexibility will allow a pension fund to be treated in the
same way as any other investment, however, unless the extra income is
required then you may want to limit the amount you withdraw to keep
you within your current tax band.
Capstone Financial Management provides a range of financial planning

My Glossop
Glossoplife
You’d be hard pressed to find someone more passionate about the history of Glossop than Glynis
Cooper. Although born in Stockport, Glynis’s family on her grandfather’s side hailed from Glossop
and she moved her family here almost 40 years ago. As a librarian, archaeologist, historian and
writer she was perhaps the perfect person to write “Glossop in the Great War”.
What inspired you to write this particular book?
This book is one of a series of 6 commissioned by publishers
Pen & Sword and I was interested because they weren’t looking
for a military perspective, instead they wanted to focus on the
experiences of those who were left behind. I dedicated it to the
memory of my grandfather who served (but never spoke about
his experiences) during the war. He suffered a shrapnel wound
in Palestine and had a metal plate in his head which fascinated
all his grandchildren especially me.
Which local sources did you use in your research?
There is a problem with the history of Glossop at the time of the
Great War because in 1926 many of the historical records for
the area were destroyed during a clear out of the estate offices.
Known as “the burning of the Glossop papers” many important
historical documents were lost and as there are no living
survivors to talk to I had to be creative. Glossop Library was
my main source of written information and I read every Glossop
Chronicle published between May 1914 and December 1918
and drew on my own historic and archaeological knowledge to
build a picture of what life had been like during those years.
24 • Glossop Life
What did you discover?
Goodness, so many interesting things but in particular I was
moved by the sheer determination of the people left behind in
Glossop to do all they could to support the war effort including,
for example, helping Derbyshire produce more than a million
garments during the course of the war, raising money for the
Red Cross and looking after injured Belgian soldiers.
Where do you write?
I work at home in Hadfield and basically I like to be left alone.
My husband is well-meaning, always offering me cups of tea
and checking I’m OK but let’s just say I am most productive
when he’s in New Zealand visiting his daughter!
If I hit a bit of a wall I love to get out for a walk Glossop is a great place to shift writer’s cramp.
History is clearly a passion of yours - do you know
much about the history of your own family?
Well my mother whose maiden name was Plant swore blind
it was a shortened version of Plantagenet. Of course I didn’t
believe her but having done a bit of research it seems we can
Please mention Glossop Life when contacting advertisers
www.glossoplife.co.uk
Glossoplife My Glossop
indeed trace our family roots to a single male source – an
illegitimate child of John O’Gaunt. More interestingly it
turns out I may be a 16th cousin twice removed of
Benedict Cumberbatch!
What do you do to relax?
I like to read historical novels with a touch of the “whodunit”
about them - anything by Robert Goddard, Kate Mosse or
Barbara Erskine. I also like to put my boots on and get out to
the reservoirs of the Longdendale Valley.
You’ve lived in Glossop a long time – how do you
think it’s changed?
Things have certainly changed since the millennium – most
noticeably the Howard Town development. I remember when
that was an M&S lingerie factory and factory shop and coach
loads of women came here to buy cheap undies. In those days
they struggled to find somewhere to have a drink - today they’d
be spoilt for choice.
I’ve lived in Old Glossop, on the Charlesworth Road
and now Hadfield - people from Glossop tend to
move around, not leave.
From researching the book I’d say some of the problems we
face in Glossop in 2015 haven’t changed much since 1915, for
example the delinquency of youth back then was attributed to
watching the wrong things at the cinema – today it’s computer
games. Mind you back then the punishment was to take the
ring leader and whip them publicly. I suspect opinion is divided
about whether that’s progress or not!
Which of Glossop’s sites would you show to
someone who’d never been here before?
It would be a pretty physical introduction. I’d walk up Mouselow
[Castle Hill] to take in the panoramic views up there including the
Gamesley Estate, Melandra and Snake Pass. Then on to Old
Glossop, Shire Hill, Doctors Gate and up to the Longdendale
Valley. We’d have built up a bit of an appetite so I think probably
Pico’s for a relaxed meal and maybe some ice cream....
What else do you love about Glossop?
I think it would have to be trying to catch the Longdendale
Lights at dusk, oh and the eccles cakes at Hadfield Bakery!
They’re to die for.

CAR CARE CENTRE
One of the reasons the Car Care Centre has stood the test of
time is the range of services it provides including servicing and
MOTs, repairs and bodywork, tyre replacement and breakdown
services. They really help their customers out by providing
courtesy cars and doing local pickups and deliveries to save
time and hassle. With more and more people planning short
breaks and holidays in the UK, who better to ask for some
advice on how to get to your destination safe and sound?
Danny says:
“Road trips are great but if your vehicle
lets you down it can be a nightmare. A
little preventative maintenance can go
a long way in ensuring you arrive safe,
sound and sane!”
A FEW PRE-ROADTRIP CHECKS
Tyres - check the pressure and tread for
splits and bulges. For full loads you’ll need to
increase your tyre pressures.
Oil - is critical to your engine’s ability to function
so change it regularly.
Battery - Check connections are clean, tight
and free from corrosion. Battery problems are the
number one cause of breakdowns.
Wipers - give them a clean and make sure you’ve topped
up on water to clean away dust, dirt and insects.
Coolant - have your radiator flushed or at least check you
have the right amount and mix of coolant before you set off.
Air Conditioning - check it’s working efficiently to ensure a
comfortable journey.
Get it serviced - A regularly serviced car helps get the best
out of it. Well maintained vehicles are more fuel efficient too.

Are Porsches your passion? Do Morris Minors make
you smile? If you love classic cars, Glossop has just
the club for you. There is so much more to classic
cars than buffing bodywork when the sun comes
out. Well, so says Stephen Kimber of the recently
formed Glossop Vehicle Enthusiasts Club.
He says: “A few of us classic car enthusiasts would get
together informally so we decided to create a club to attract
like-minded people with whom we could actively share
our cars and experiences. We’ve only been in existence
since November but we’ve already attracted more than 50
members who share a passion for vehicles in general and
classic cars in particular.”
Most of the club’s members own one or more classic
vehicles and Stephen himself has a 1978 Green MGB
Roadster which is his pride and joy. Beautiful as their cars
are, members don’t just sit around admiring them – in fact
they like nothing more than taking to the road arranging
dinner drives, car shows and weekends away.
Recent events include a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach,
a Valentine's Drive to the Windy Harbour Hotel, Club
Photoshoot Day and on April 19th the Glossop Vehicle
Enthusiast Club hosted an event at Ashton Rugby Club in aid
of the children’s charity Wish Upon a Star raising £223.55.
The club often partners with other vehicle clubs for events
and retains strong links with the Glossop Rotary Club.
The club also offers classic car enthusiasts a wealth of
technical knowledge and practical experience as well as
advice about where to store, service and repair classic cars in
the local area. The website is hugely informative and even has
a page where Steve addresses common technical problems;

from ignition coils to spark plugs, there isn’t much Steve and his
fellow members can’t help classic car owners with.
If anyone should know about classic cars it’s Steve. He is
related on his father’s side to Cecil Kimber, the driving force
behind the MG Car Company – it’s what sparked his lifelong
love affair with classic cars.
License Plates - ensure the plates are clean
and can be read from 20 metres away.
Lights Check - all vehicle lights around the vehicle
should be working. Ask a friend to watch for you.
Windscreen - have cracks and chips fixed
before they spread and ensure the windscreen
wipers haven’t split.
Tyres - ensure your tyre pressure is correct and
ensure the grooves in the tyre are a minimum of
1.6mm. Refer to your car handbook for pressures.
Suspension - push the four corners of the
vehicle down. It should spring back quickly.
Steve’s top tip:
“Anyone thinking about getting involved with
classic cars should just go for it. It’s not an
expensive hobby if you choose wisely. Insurance
for a classic car with limited mileage is very
reasonable and if you get one that’s more than
40 years old there’s no
road tax to pay
either!”

Many cars fail their MOT on things that could be
avoided before the vehicle goes to be tested.
Here’s a list of things to look out for before you
take your car for an MOT.
Brakes - your handbrake should give some
resistance when pulled up and the footbrake should
not feel loose.
Exhaust Check - ensure the exhaust isn’t making
unusual sounds or smoke while the engine is running.
Fluids Check - ensure all fluids are topped up
(brake, oil and windscreen washer).
A quick check can save you money or allow you
to know in advance what could need doing.

We love a good BBQ, and are really looking forward to the
first lighting of the coals this summer. We’re even more
excited about this DIY BBQ Spice Rub recipe, which is sure
to improve the BBQ experience 100%!
Dig in to this BBQ secret and you’ll have as much fun preparing
the food as you do eating it!
Try and use the freshest, best quality herbs and spices possible.
Fresh is always the better choice between the jar you’ve had in
the cupboard since 2009!
Use a proven ratio of 8:3:1:1 and
you can’t go wrong. Use 8
tablespoons of a light
muscovado sugar, to
3 tablespoons of
coarse sea salt, to
one table spoon
each of any other
herb or spice.
www.glossoplife.co.uk
Some of our favourites are:
•
•
•
•
Cumin
Paprika
Thyme
Rosemary
•
•
•
•
Chilli Powder
Ground Coriander
Ground Fennel Seeds
Peppercorns
• Cayenne Pepper
• Oregano
• Sage
However don’t be limited to the above – feel free to use any
herb or spice you like. Providing you stick to the ratio, you can’t
mess it up!
For the best results, rub the meat into moist, thawed meat
ideally 24 hours before it’s due to be cooked, in order for the
flavours to really set in.
Make sure you take the meat out of the fridge 1 hour before it’s
due to be cooked too, so it reaches room temperature.
Any leftover rub can be stored in an airtight container or jar for
the next time.

turns out Rowhouse is just what Glossop needed.
Seriously cool shakes
“At Rowhouse we offer a friendly, inviting
atmosphere, affordable food and fabulous
milkshakes! Customers include friends catching
up, walkers, families and couples – everyone is

The velvety sweet ice cream is made on the premises from
a special Italian mix. Diners can choose from the fabulous
milkshake menu – try the Tropical Fruit (strawberry, banana,
pineapple and mango) or Coffee Cubano (coffee, nutella, honey)
but what makes Rowhouse so special is the option to make
your own.
Fresh and modern it has the buzz you’d expect from a great
eatery and the prices are great too with gourmet burgers
ranging from just £4-£6. And then... someone walks past with a
milkshake and you know you have to have one!
Sit at the milkshake bar and take your time choosing from
more than 60 chocolate bars including American favourites like
Hersheys and Reese’s and childhood classics from Cadburys
and Nestle. Then, add toppings and syrups of your choice to
make an amazing milkshake!
Fabulous choice, fantastic prices
The Rowhouse sells a range of fresh fruit smoothies, soft drinks
and hot beverages but it’s their milkshakes that have people
coming from far and wide.
Family treats
Mains include burgers, wraps, patties, hotdogs and steaks
and a choice of lip-licking sides including nachos, sweet potato
fries and cheesy chips with bacon. The dessert menu offers
yummy old school favourites including Jam Roly Poly and Sticky
Toffee Pudding and modern belt-looseners like Ferrero Rocher
Cheesecake and Flake Gateau. Mmmmmm.
The team at Rowhouse are super friendly and family focussed
and they don’t sell alcohol so pop in for an after school treat or
a Saturday morning pit stop with the kids.
Large groups are welcome (the upstairs
room can be hired for up to 20 people)
but if you’re planning to go with a

April saw the launch of a fantastic new e-learning platform
for people interested in horses and horse care. Equine
Knowledge was created by local horse expert Cara Dobbins
who has worked with and cared for horses for more than 25
years. She explains the thinking behind her new venture:
so the site needed to be intuitive, easy to use and cater for a
range of learning styles. They rose to the technical challenge
and were great at speaking to me in a language I understood.
I’ve had fantastic feedback from everyone who’s used the site
since it went live.”
“Lots of people with a genuine passion for horses are
put off by the expense involved and I wanted to provide
an online resource to break down that barrier. I knew I
needed expert help because of the technical nature of the
site so, with the know-how of the team from Fig Digital,
I’ve created an educational tool that’s fun, accessible
and affordable. It’s for horse lovers of all abilities and
knowledge and the great thing is you can learn at a pace
that suits you.”
Ways to learn
The clever people at Fig Digital have designed and built a site
that offers learning via:
• Pictures • Photos
• Video Clips • Online Documents
• Interactive Quizzes
To find out more about learning with
Equine Knowledge visit the website
www.equineknowledge.co.uk, email
[email protected] or find them on Facebook.
Each level that you will work through reflects the knowledge
requirements of Pony Club and British Horse Society qualifications,
although horse lovers don’t have to be working towards a formal
qualification to enjoy learning with Equine Knowledge.
Expert advice
Cara sought the help of web design and development experts
Fig Digital to help bring her vision to life. She recalls her
first meeting:

The prize was kindly donated by Gillian Ussher of Perpetual Portraits

Here she is with Dudley’s picture – isn’t it fantastic?
Once again, Glossop Life would like to thank everyone for taking part

Discover the
Buxton Festival
10th – 26th July 2015
Glossop Life’s Star Picks…
In 1976, Malcolm Fraser, a lecturer in Opera at the Royal
Northern College of Music was enjoying a family outing
to Buxton. Whilst there, he spotted a run-down (but
ornate) building showing the film Jaws, with the words
‘Opera House’ above the door.
Opera Series - Dido and Aeneas
An innovative, candle-lit staging of Henry Purcell’s first
opera Dido and Aeneas, considered by many the greatest
English opera of the 17th century. In this Bristol Old Vic
production by Tom Morris and John Retallack, celebrated
South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza plays the
abandoned Queen of Carthage, and rising star David Stout
is the Trojan hero.
Monday 13th & 20th July at Buxton Opera House,
7.15pm. Tickets from £15.
Fraser had a vision that this building could be home to
an annual opera festival and with the help of his friend,
National Opera conductor Anthony Hose, he set about
putting his dream into action.
This vision lead to the regeneration of the Opera House,
and in 1979, the first Buxton Festival was staged. The
Festival continues to go from strength to strength, and is
recognised both nationally and internationally as one of the
UK’s leading arts festivals.
A summer celebration of the very best opera, music and
literature at the heart of the beautiful Peak District, the
Buxton Festival has been described as 'a happy marriage
of opera, music and books.'
The festival features internationally established, artists and
literary figures in a packed two-week programme with
ticket sales of over 40,000, but Artistic Director, Stephen
Barlow, is always keen to promote the most promising upand-coming artists too, saying: “It’s always our intention to
promote younger artists every year as well, and I’m proud
of the number we have attracted this year
of the next generation of star performers.”
Music Series – The Fitzwilliam String Quartet
One of the longest established string quartets in the
world, the Fitzwilliam String Quartet now is built around a
younger generation of players combining amicably with
one original member! Founded in 1968 by four Cambridge
undergraduates, the quartet achieved international
recognition at the very outset of its career.
Tuesday, 14th July at St John’s Church, 3.30pm.
Tickets from £17.50.
Literary Series – Dickens’ Women
In this highly entertaining talk, acclaimed actress Miriam
Margolyes brings to life Charles Dickens’ most affecting
and colourful female (and male!) characters, in her powerful
and comprehensive exposé of Dickens, his writing, and the
real-life women who found themselves immortalised in
his books.
Thursday, 23rd July at Buxton Opera House, 2pm.
Tickets £12.

Music & Theatre Glossoplife
A new live music night in Glossop is promising to
show that the era of the protest singer is still with us.
The Defiance Sessions take place every two months
at Glossop Labour Club and will feature a singer/
songwriter or band that has politics, passion and
protest in their music.
This new venture is being run by Glossop singer-songwriter
Matt Hill (aka Quiet Loner) who was inspired by a visit to
Glastonbury Festival. “A couple of years ago I was invited by
Billy Bragg to play on his Leftfield stage at Glastonbury” says
Matt, “The idea behind Leftfield is to mix pop and politics and
showcase performers who have something to say about the
world. I was really inspired by the bands I saw there and so the
seed was sown for the Defiance Sessions.”
The Defiance Sessions will be held every two months on the
last Saturday of the month. Matt, performing as Quiet Loner,
will host each session before introducing a special guest artist.
The first to feature was singer songwriter Joe Solo, which took
place on Saturday, 28th March.
Hill is keen to make the gigs accessible to everyone so one
unusual feature is that the live music will finish at 10pm. “A lot
of old firebrands and punks are now Mums and Dads” he says,
“so I was keen to time the gigs so people can get home for the
babysitter. It also means people can come in from Manchester
and have plenty of time to catch the last train home. The bar
will stay open till 11 though so it’s a chance for the rest of us to
chat with the band and listen to some great tunes!”
Tickets can be purchased from Glossop Labour Club and cost
£5 in advance or £3 for the unwaged. Tickets on the night will
cost £7.
Upcoming Gigs
May 30th - Poetry Takeover with Tony Walsh (Longfella)
July 25th - Americana Songwriters Circle with Stuart
Warburton and Gerry O’Gorman
September 26th - Lizzie Nunnery & Vidar Norheim
November 28th - The Hurriers

Organised by The Royal Voluntary Service in
association with Age UK and the Glossop Seniors Club,
the Glossop Lunch Club is a great way for isolated older
people aged 60 and over to enjoy some company and a
sit down meal in a safe and supportive environment.
Founded in 2006 in response to the demise of meals-onwheels, the club meets every other Wednesday between
11.30am and 2pm at the First Dinting Scout Centre. During
those two and a half hours it’s wonderful to hear the buzz of
conversation, laughter and murmurs of appreciation of a good
hot meal and lovely company that members may not otherwise
experience.

and celebrate together.”
If you are interested in attending the Glossop Lunch Club or if
you would like to volunteer to help or transport people (drivers
would need a valid UK driving licence) to and from the club,
please contact Shirley Redfern on 01457 853 423 or Lynne
Deacon on 01457 853 907.
Freshly prepared on the
premises, a typical lunch includes
a main course, dessert and hot
and cold drinks. Shepherd's pie
and bread and butter pudding
are firm favourites among the
50 or so regulars who pay a
reasonable £4.50 for their meal and £1 for the return journey
from home. It’s this side of things that needs a bit of famous
Glossop community support.
Lynne Deacon who oversees the club says
“Our drivers provide a lifeline to older people who
are socially isolated and want to come to the club but
can’t get there. Glossop Community Transport does a
great job for us but we need at least 5 more drivers to
cater for this increasingly popular event."
Lynne goes on to say, "Volunteering can be hugely rewarding
and by supporting this increasingly isolated section of the
