A place of inspiration for today’s consumer. This farm is still a place of inspiration for the entire family, both indoors and outdoors, with well-preserved interior paintings, a large garden and a playground. There is also a World Heritage Visitor Center, with a shop, exhibition and information. OPEN: June 12 - August 13, Tuesday-Saturday 11 am-5 pm. Guided tours can be booked in advance, by appointment with the Visitor Center at Träslottet. SEK 80/person. Erik-Anders is located in the village on Asta, in Söderala parish, one of the best preserved village environments in Söderhamn municipality. Erik-Anders is one of the seven Hälsingland farmhouses included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The main hall is said to be one of the most beautiful rooms in Hälsingland, with an unusually lavish interior. The Knutespojkarna painters decorated the festivities room with high-quality marble patterns that go well with both the tiled stove and the door lintels, and are still something to behold, 200 years later. The farmhouse contains samples of interiors from many different eras, from the 1800s to the 1930s. The rooms have been decorated with oldstyle newly manufactured furniture, which can also be ordered from the shop. The site also contains a recreated 1920s garden and a farm cafe, in a cozy environment. The five newly built hotel standard double rooms can be rented. OPEN: Every day June 25 - Aug 31, 11am-5pm, until 9pm every Wednesday in July. Open Sat-Sun from 12pm-3pm, January 16-December 18. We welcome booked group tours by appointment. Lavish decorations have formed the setting for the greatest celebrations in life, in rooms that were only meant for celebration. Everything was ostensibly meant to impress both neighbors and guests from far away. But the well-preserved interior painting contains more than that; it is multi-faceted and globally unique in its scope. The painting ranges from 14th century tapestries with religious motifs to the elegant landscape paintings of the 1800s. The painting was inspired by both churches and village areas. Stencils, marbling, spray painting, or why not a single color paint, like in the age of Karl-Johan. The techniques and impressions vary from painter to painter, and from parish to parish. Both local painters and travelers have adorned the freehold farms of the Hälsingland farmers. There is no doubt that the farmers of Hälsingland invested a lot in their homes, and you can clearly see where each technique belonged. Marbling can be found in the lobbies, whereas freehand painting was done in the festivities rooms. Stencils were acceptable for most rooms, and their status increased during the mid-1800s. Stenciling made it easier for the painters to repeat pattern, so as to create the impression of a printed wallpaper, which was increasingly becoming a status symbol. Beautiful wallpapers became more and more popular among the Hälsingland farmers, and they represent yet another colorful part of the interior history of the farms. The village is one of few cluster villages that were never divided. The houses are located so close to each other that it can be difficult to guess which building belongs to which farm. Oljons was given its own lot number 1727, and today consists of three wings of houses from the 1700-1800s. The farmyard lies at the end, as if a world of its own, as Karls is practically adjacent on the fourth side. Karls became a model farm in the 1930s, with guided tours, and Oljons started welcoming guests, which it has every summer since then. In 1938, the two-week holiday law was enacted. The carriage house was then refurbished for guests. The rooms were decorated in traditional style, using old painting techniques, and each room was painted in a different color, with matching textiles. Today some of the textiles have been replaced, but it is mostly the same, except for the beds, which are new and very comfortable. The breakfast buffet is served in the day room, where the smell of freshly baked bread is in the air every morning, often mixing with the crackling of the fire in the open oven. The shower and toilets are located in a building on the other end of the courtyard. To make the short walk more comfortable, each guest gets a bathrobe. The price includes breakfast, bed linen, towels and a bathrobe. The site contains 17 beds in rooms for one to four guests. OPEN: May 1 - September 31 for “Stay at a Hälsingland farmhouse”. Each farmhouse has its own history, and even if you’ve seen one Hälsingland farmhouse, you’ve certainly not seen them all Photo: Linda Elverstig, Matvärden What is Hälsingland cheesecake? The dairy foods are a big part of Hälsingland’s culinary history. The Hälsingland cheesecake has an extra special place, and the recipe varies slightly depending on where in Hälsingland you are. The Hälsingland cheesecake always contains milk and rennet. Then the local recipes vary, and sometimes flour or egg is added to the cheese curd. The cheese curd is baked in the oven, and you pour off whey during baking. In the wealthier communities, such as Järvsö and Forsa, people could afford to season the cheesecake with saffron. Around Järvsö, the cheesecake is glazed with saffron, and in Forsa the saffron is added to the cheese curd before baking the cake. How the Hälsingland locals want their cheesecake, and what is the “correct” way is a subject of much debate. Often, it is the “gnersk’s” (squeeking) existence or non-existence that brings out strong opinions. “Gnersk” is an expression from Hälsingland that refers to a certain texture of the Hälsingland cheesecake – a soft cheesecake generates less “gnersk” while a harder cheesecake generates more. Today, the Hälsingland cheesecake is traditionally served as a dessert, and is heated in cream and served with fruit sauce, jam or fresh berries and whipped cream. Mårtes in Edsbyn. Ol-Anders, Alfta. Today there are around 1000 Hälsingland farmhouses, setting their mark on the Hälsingland landscape. The farmhouses are very much a living cultural heritage, and many of them have been owned by the same family for generations. With their unique combination of functionality and beauty, the Hälsingland farmhouses are the result of a long building tradition that climaxed in the middle of the 19th century. The farms’ appearances differ across the province, but they are joined together by the creators’ sense of proportion, style and harmony with the surroundings. What they also have in common is the many buildings, sometimes as many as 20, which all had their own specific function for life on the farm, for people, animals, tools, or food. Moreover, the farms has summer pastures, some of which are open for visits today. The good economy that made it possible for the farmers to develop their farms is, apart from the farming, rooted in trading for example flax and wood. Often, the appearance of the building is a result of strong local traditions, but influences of Baroque, Rococo and Karl-Johan Style are recurring. Local trends have mostly affected the appearance of the farms’ entrances. In Voxna valley visitors are greeted by grand porches, and around Forsa by beautifully carved doors. Svedbovallen, Järvsö.
