HOUSTON EDITION
July 2016
President’s Message
As our Nation celebrates its 240th birthday this year, we are
reminded of so many other milestones in our history…the Houston
chapter will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2017; the 69th LCAM
will be held in Spokane Washington September 21 – 24, 2016; 29
years ago and 9 years ago Houston hosted LCAM. Both LINBECK
and Mustang Machinery Company have been members of EWI since
1981; Quanex Building Products Corporation since 1982; Pearce
Industries since 1991; and Jackson and Company since 1992. We
are 81 member firms strong, and we raised $107,000 for our BCDP
account so we will be able to keep our scholarship programs going.
Linda Petticrew,
The Petticrew family will be celebrating in August with our last child
Shell Energy
Rachel graduating from college and moving back to Houston.

Ceremonies and celebrations give a true meaning of connection to
family, community, a sense of personal achievement, and recognition
of increasing individual responsibility. A celebration is also an
acknowledgement of, and respect toward, one’s family, friends and
one’s own self. It’s important that we recognize the milestones and
celebrate the successes of our chapter. Remember, 50 years from
now they are going to be talking about us!
We will be giving away 13 scholarships at our July Scholarship
Chapter meeting totaling $50,000 between EWISP, ASIST, and the
Past President’s scholarships. I hope you will join us as we celebrate
this month. You will not want to miss meeting our deserving
scholarship winners.
LCAM registration has been sent out now and the early bird
registration fee has been extended to July 22. I have heard Spokane
is a beautiful place to visit. We have 8 already registered for LCAM
and hopefully the Houston Chapter will have 14 to 20 reps attending
this year.
Life is a wonderful journey and 2016 is giving us lots of reasons to
celebrate. Please join in the fun!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Submitted by the 2015-2016 Professional Development Committee
Think Consensus-Building vs. Conflict
As more companies embrace the spirit of teamwork, you must learn to work with other people and truly
become a team player to get the work done and help your organization be more competitive. In fact, if
you are like most employees across the country, your organization has right-sized or may intend to
merge or downsize, thereby creating more work to be done by fewer people. In addition, the constant
push for quality and improved customer service necessitates cooperation among employees.
Conflict can hold you back from being your best and giving your best. You don't feel confident or happy
when you are in conflict with co-workers or even a customer. Maybe right now you think of someone you
work with whom you are in conflict. It doesn't make you feel good, does it? It may be uncomfortable
enough that you dread going to work. As long you come in contact with others, however, you will experience conflict.
Big or Small
Conflict does not necessarily mean a big blow out! Just different views and opinions can create
undercurrent. You think a project should be completed one way and your peer thinks it should be done
another way. Maybe your executive thinks you did not thoroughly plan his trip the way he would have
liked and you believe you did an excellent job. It is the little disagreements and perspectives that hinder
our performance--slow us down. So don't ignore little misunderstandings.
#1. Listen: listen carefully in order to understand the other person's point of view. Block out your
own thoughts, judgments, and priorities and listen to the other person's concerns and feelings.
#2. Solicit Ideas From Each Other: ask the other person questions like, " What do you think the
problem is?" "How do you see us working better together?" "How can I help you accomplish your goals?"
#3. Define the Problem: are you clear on the real issue or conflict or is it just your perception?
Ongoing communication helps clarify each person's perception of the situation, ensuring that the problem
is clearly defined.
#4. Use Facts Only: stick to the facts when confronting someone. You will get more positive
results when you deal with the facts than with the emotions around them.
#5. Acknowledge the Other Person's Strengths:
objectively look at the situation and
acknowledge the other person's good points. Keep them in mind while dealing with the issue.
#6. Maintain Each Other's Self-Esteem: it is harmful to belittle others and diminishes your professional image. When confronting colleagues, make sure you communicate in a way that allows them to
save face.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (cont’d.)
#7. Talk to Each Other; Not About Each Other: make every effort to approach the other person
directly. Don't talk behind someone's back. Have the courage to talk to them. This gives you an
opportunity to work on solutions.
#8. Listen For Underlying Issues: sometimes what we think is the problem, really isn't. When the
other person is speaking, listen for any hidden issues. Try to get to the heart of the conflict so you can
deal with it.
#9. Be Open and Honest, Don't Hint: use assertive communication techniques. Go directly to the
source, be direct and specific. Let the person know what you find acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
#10. Take Charge: having an " attitude of taking charge" is not necessarily the same as the " skill
of taking charge." It starts with having the attitude, then developing certain skills. When you develop this
attitude and fully subscribe to it, you will see others differently. You want to develop the skill to take
charge in a way that you will get cooperation. People will want to do what you ask because they like and
respect you, not because you bullied them into it.
#11. Seek Help from an Outside Source: there may be situations where you are too close to the
problem and too emotionally involved to use good judgment. Consult others whose judgment you trust.
#12. Widen Your Circle: don't confine yourself to this one individual to set your value or be your
friend. Build a wider networking circle and remain balanced in your at-work relationships and interactions.
#13. Keep Your Perspective: when conflicted it's easy to think everything is negative and
terrible. It isn't! Keep a gratitude list, put a favorite happy photo on your cube wall, take a walk at
lunchtime or grab a coffee with a friend.
#14. Walk Away: sometimes you may find none of these strategies work; despite your efforts, the
other person will not work with you to resolve the problem. There are times when you should not
negotiate and choose to walk away.



Individual is highly competitive
Individual is unethical or illegal
Either party is too stressed to attempt reconciliation
From this day forward, change your thinking from managing conflict to consensus building. It will make a
big difference.

Have You Met Our Newest Reps?
Submitted by Shari Schiffman, 2015-2016 Membership Director, representing John Daugherty, Realtors
Raquel Rosa, representing Arch-Con Construction, is
Human Resources Manager (her motto is HR rocks)! Her
executive is Geri Pacheco, Chief Financial Officer. She joins
her co-worker, Suzanne Humphrey, in EWI of Houston.
Arch-Con Construction is a Texas-based, full service general
contractor specializing in commercial design and construction
services for real estate developers, building owners, architects,
brokers and tenants.
Originally from Edna, Texas, Raquel lived in San Antonio for 20
years prior to moving to Houston in 2015. She got married a
little over a year ago and now has a husband, three stepchildren and a dog! Raquel’s favorite thing about Houston is
the Astros and she loves to cook and drink red wine.
Raquel enjoys meeting new people and gaining knowledge on how to better herself and
those around her.
Dell Rosepink, representing Hilton Houston Post Oak, is
Assistant Director of Sales. Her executive is Cindy Paul, Director
of Sales and Marketing.
The Hilton Houston Post Oak is a 448 guest room hotel located in
Uptown near the Galleria. The hotel has just completed a multimillion dollar renovation and features state of the art
accomodations.
Dell was born in New Orleans from an American mother and a
French father. Her family moved to France where she attended
high school. After high school, she worked at the Monte Carlo
Sporting Club, the Loews Hotel in Monte Carlo, and later was
bookkeeper at the Christian Dior Boutique. Dell returned to the
States in 1983 and completed a degree in Foreign Languages
and Political Science at LSU in 1987. She met her former husband in New Orleans and
moved to San Antonio in 1990 where her two sons were born. They lived in Dallas, Kansas
City (where their daughter was born), and arrived in Houston in 1999 settling in Kingwood.
She and her husband amicably separated in 2012, and Dell moved inside the loop so her
daughter could attend school in town.
Dell is looking forward to making new friends in different roles. She feels that joining an
association like EWI of Houston will give her the opportunity to work with people she might
not get to work with in her day to day job. Dell says that she never wants to get to the point
where things are “routine” and believes that change is the only constant to embrace in order
to continue growing personally and professionally.
