Interfaith Project in the Bronx
On April 21 we began our “Shul-in-a-Mosque” restoration project*. The
day was quite simply magical. We had about 60 people there – from
the Riverdale Y, RCJRC, Congregation Tehillah, Riverdale Temple, Manhattan College’s Interfaith class (16 Catholic students), and of course
the teens from the mosque.
Leaders in attendance that day included Rabbi Bob Kaplan from the
JCRC-NY; Rabbi Linda Shriner-Cahn of Congregation Tehillah, Imam
Mousseh Drammeh from the Mosque/Islamic Leadership School;
Mehnaz Afridi, the director of Manhattan College’s Center for Holocaust,
Genocide and Interfaith Studies, and Marti Michael, the Riverdale Y’s
executive director. There was also a representative from the Mayor’s office and media coverage from NY1, News12, WINS, Bronx News, WNBC,
and more.
The project was funded, in part, by a grant from the Citizen’s Committee for NYC.
The day started with the three groups of teens (Jewish, Muslim, and
Catholic) working on the synagogue in their distinct groups, but
within ½ hour, they had started to chat with each other and work
together across their “home” groups – it was EXACTLY what was hoped
for. People walking by on the street stopped to see what the fuss was
about (and why the media was there) and some rolled up their sleeves,
inspired by the teens, and began to help. The groups will convene
again on Sunday, May 12 to continue the project and then plan to
“keep it going” after the summer – details to follow.
It was a beautiful day. Rabbi Kaplan emailed (before he left for Qatar,
where he spoke in Doha about the project to great acclaim) “what a
great day -- a magnificent event for all New Yorkers, thank you all.”
*A recap if you missed the beginning of this story – there is a very small congregation left in Parkchester which could no longer afford to
maintain their synagogue building and sold it. When the Imam of the Islamic Cultural Center nearby heard that they had no place to worship,
he approached their rabbi and said “I have room in my mosque – come create a synagogue here.” And so the shul-in-a-mosque” was born. The
synagogue room had by now fallen into great disrepair and after an interfaith program at the Riverdale Y, one of the Islamic Cultural Center’s
young teens said “what’s next? What can we do together?” The Imam and Rabbi Kaplan spoke of the synagogue in need of repair and an interfaith project for volunteer teens was born! Add a class of 16 Catholic students from Manhattan College and you do, indeed, have a “magical” day
of which we can all be proud.

Early Childhood Center is as pretty as a butterfly
We are anticipating our butterflies emerging from the chrysalis and
in May we will have our” butterfly liberation celebration”.. We have
learned a lot about the life cycle of the butterfly through stories but
mostly through observation. (See pictures of our students studying
the resting chrysalis). Some of us may grow up to be scientists who
study butterflies. We hope so.
