FRONTLINE BCPFF.COM ONLINE Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Ninety-six percent of all homes have at least one smoke alarm, according to a 2010 telephone survey. Overall, three-quarters of all U.S. homes have at least one working smoke alarm. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths in 20052009 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead. Almost one-quarter of the smoke alarm failures was due to dead batteries. The three-star rating is earned by only 10-15% of cardiac surgery programs in the U.S., according to the STS. In the current analysis of national data covering the period from January 2013 through December 2013, the cardiac surgery performance of our hospital was found to lie in the highest quality tier, thereby receiving an STS 3 star rating. ONE PROGRAM, TWO LOCATIONS. Patients in need of cardiac surgery benefit from the joint program between surgeons from UM St. Joseph Medical Center and the University of Maryland Medical Center. More than 70 percent of calls received by the Fire Department are medical calls. Medic units (often called ambulances) are housed in fire stations alongside fire apparatus, and all career and many volunteer personnel are trained in both EMS and fire suppression. The Department operates 31 career advanced life support medic units; the Baltimore County Volunteer Firemen’s Association operates 19 advanced life support ambulances and two basic life support units. All career fire apparatus are equipped with automatic external defibrillators, used to treat sudden cardiac arrest victims. Eight EMS district officers supervise daily EMS operations. Will I Get A Bill? Baltimore County does not bill for EMS service. If you live in Baltimore County or are a visitor to Baltimore County, the cost of emergency medical service is covered by tax revenues. ABOUT EMS RESPONSE Engines vs. Medic Units Occasionally, a fire engine, ladder truck or utility vehicle will respond when you call 911 for medical assistance. All career fire units and many volunteer engines carry trained EMS personnel. Dispatchers send an engine, truck or utility unit if one of these is closer to to the medical emergency than an available medic unit; the goal is to reach the patient as quickly as possible. Also, dispatchers may send an engine to support medic crews on high-priority medical calls. Career vs. Volunteer Dispatchers send career and volunteer personnel based on proximity to the emergency and the type of equipment required. At the incident scene, career and volunteer personnel follow the same chain of command and the same operating procedures. Volunteers who actively respond to fire and EMS calls must have the same basic training as their career counterparts. We live next door to you. We are husbands, wives, sons and daughters. We are the ones who come to your aid when you need it. We represent the career Fire Fighters and Paramedics in Baltimore County and we respond to over 120,000 fire and EMS calls each year and we service over 700,000 citizens in Baltimore County directly. We staff 29 fire engines, 7 ladder trucks, 30 Advanced Life Support (ALS) units and we are on duty for you 24/7, 365. We respond within 45 seconds with the highest level of certifications and training available. We contact both the citizens and the businesses in Baltimore County by telephone for direct donations to assist us with these projects. We call when we need you just like you would call if you need us. We have been involved in fundraising since 1990. You may remember we started out by providing two music concerts per year. One would be a Country show and the other would be an Oldies show. Due to the sharp increase in expenses of putting on a show we finally had to stop having shows in 2007 so our projects would have as much funding as possible. We have a semi-annual book called “Frontline” that is published by the business donations which includes advertisements for their business as well as important information on fire prevention and safety tips. These projects include, but are not limited to: 1. Fire Prevention Poster Contest: We are happy to be the creators and the primary annual sponsor of the Poster Contest held each year in the elementary schools in Baltimore County. 2. Regional Burn Center: We have raised thousands of dollars to support the International Regional Burn Center as well as our local burn center. 3. Smoke Detectors: We purchase smoke detectors that are kept in each career station that are available for home owners that need one. 4. After The Prom Party: We donate to the high schools for their after the prom party to give students a place to go after the prom. WHEN IN DOUBT, CHECK IT OUT! The Fire Museum’s annual Train Garden which starts on November 28th and runs every Saturday through December 29th. New this year is a display of hand crafted gingerbread houses reflecting area museums. Visitors will be delighted by the 1940's style, Lionel style trains of this large display. Kids of all ages will enjoy this uniquely Baltimore themed Holiday Train Garden with an underground subway, street cars winding past Baltimore neighborhoods, Baltimore Zoo, fire stations, Gwynn Oak Amusement Park and the Viaduct. Opening day of the Holiday Train Garden on November 28 features the grand entrance of Santa Claus at 11:00a.m. Free photos with Santa will be available for children until 2:00 p.m. Holiday train gardens are unique to Baltimore because the tradition descended from the Moravians who immigrated to American and settled in Pennsylvania and Baltimore two centuries ago. Baltimoreans loved their gardens and firehouses utilized the gardens as a way to bring holiday spirit to the children of the community. During difficult times, the train gardens were thought to represent an ideal world. Today there are only a handful of firehouses that have train gardens and maintain the tradition. The Fire Museum of Maryland has hosted a train garden designed by volunteers since 1986. The Train Garden is open Saturdays from 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m. and will be open during Christmas break Sunday through Tuesday (Dec. 26-29). Museum entrance and gingerbread art tour is included with admission price ($12.00 adults, $10.00 seniors, $5.00 for children 2-18.) The Fire Museum of Maryland The Fire Museum of Maryland is located at 1301 York Road in Lutherville, one block north of 695, the Baltimore Beltway. Abundant free parking is always available. The mission of the Fire Museum of Maryland is to collect, preserve, display and interpret historically significant apparatus and related artifacts, memorabilia and records of the fire service in the United States; and to educate the public about the history, people, equipment and techniques of the fire service and fire prevention and safety.
