Lake Fork speaks with 15.5-Pound
Largemouth: Budweiser ShareLunker NO. 398
ATHENS, Texas—To paraphrase a line from a bad mystery
novel, Lake Fork has been quiet—too quiet. While lakes from
Conroe to Casa Blanca produced
six entries in the Budweiser
ShareLunker program, the alltime leading producer of trophy
largemouth bass was mute.
Fork broke its silence
Tuesday, when Billy Pfeil of
Alba pulled a 15.5-pound largemouth—Budweiser ShareLunker No. 398—from the lake.
The huge fish was 25.25
inches long and 23.5 inches
around. It was the 19th largest
Budweiser ShareLunker entry
from Lake Fork and the 24th
largest fish entered into the program.
Not since Jim Harrell
caught a 16.12-pound fish from
Lake Fork on March 22, 2002,
has the lake produced so large
an entry.
Pfeil was fishing in 12
feet of water using a black-andblue 5-inch Senko when the fish
took it at 2:30 in the afternoon.
The angler who catches
the 400th lunker will receive
a prize package that includes
$400 per pound of weight.
That fish must be turned over
to TPWD alive; for tips on caring for lunkers until pickup,

fishing from the bank or from a
boat with no livewell should pay
special attention to this information.
Anglers legally catching
a 13-pound or bigger largemouth
bass in Texas waters may enter
it into the ShareLunker program
by calling David Campbell at

BUDWEISER SHARELUNKER NO. 400
COMES FROM LAKE AMISTAD
Treasure
Island
Gift & Novelty Shop
Kansas Angler Lands 13.1-pound Bass Worth $5,240
ATHENS, Texas—And the winner is.....Jason Baird of Gypsum,
Kansas.
Fishing the Castle Canyon
area of Lake Amistad about noon
Tuesday, Baird and guide Ray
Hanselman, Jr., spotted a big
bass on her bed. After 45 tension-filled minutes during which
the big bass darted at the Smallie
Beaver creature bait in the White
Trash pattern at least 15 times
without taking it, she finally bit.
Thinking the bass weighed
perhaps 8 or 9 pounds, Baird was
going to lip it until it came to
the boat and they realized it was
much bigger. Hanselman then
handed Baird a net so he could
land the fish, which was 26 inches long and 21 inches around.
“This was my second time to
fish Lake Amistad, and I’d never
sight fished before,” Baird said.
“Amistad is awesome. There
were so many big fish on beds in
there.”
The 34-year-old Baird and
three friends drove all Monday
night to get to the lake to fish. “I
had seen on Bass Center on ESPN
that Budweiser ShareLunker 398
had been caught, but I did not
know my fish might be eligible
for the prize for number 400 until we called another guide after I
caught it and he started screaming to get the fish weighed and
call the ShareLunker hotline,”
Baird said. Baird, who is Parks
and Recreation Director for Herington, Kansas, was using a Falcon rod with a Quantum spinning
reel spooled with 30-pound-test
braided line.
In addition to the usual prizes of a Budweiser ShareLunker
jacket and a fiberglass replica
of the fish, Baird will receive a
cash award of $400 per pound
of fish and a G.Loomis rod with
Shimano reel valued at a total
of $600. Prizes will be funded
by the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Foundation,
Anheuser-Busch
and G.Loomis.
What does an angler do after catching the probable fish of
a lifetime and gaining an unexpected windfall in the process?
Go fishing again. What else?
Baird and friends and Hanselman were back on the water at
daybreak Wednesday, just as
Budweiser ShareLunker program manager David Campbell
was pulling into the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center after an
895-mile, 16-hour round trip.
Following a quick examination and measuring session, the
fish forever after to be known as
Budweiser ShareLunker No. 400
was swimming circles in her new
home, peering at curious photographers through the picture
window in her personal tank. If
all goes as planned in the coming weeks, she will mate with
a male descendant of an earlier
ShareLunker to produce several
thousand offspring that will be
stocked into Lake Amistad and
perhaps other public lakes in
Texas.
And in 8 or 9 years, another
lucky angler may find himself
enjoying a very personal connection to the present drama in the
form of another, perhaps even
bigger fish on the end of his or
her line. Making that happen as
often as possible is the ultimate
goal of the Budweiser ShareLunker program.
Anglers legally catching a
13-pound or bigger largemouth
bass in Texas waters may enter it
into the ShareLunker program by
calling David Campbell at (903)
681-0550 or by paging him at
(888) 784-0600.

Nearly a Lunker (we call it a bud lite)
When David Campbell’s
pager went off at 4:30 in the
afternoon on Monday, February 13th – he thought Budweiser ShareLunker # 397
had been caught. John Ramos
from McKinney, Texas was the
angler – his estimate was that
he had landed a 14 to 15 pound
largemouth from Towne Lake,
located on the south side of
McKinney. With no certified
scales or marina near the small
lake the ShareLunker truck
hit the road – equipped with
certified scales, hauling tanks,
oxygen, etc. to travel the 120
miles to the lake.
Upon arrival, the fish appeared to be near the 13 pound
required weight to be a Budweiser ShareLunker entry,
but when the scales stopped
bouncing the fish was certified at 12.9 pounds – the first
lake record for Towne Lake.
Though not an official ShareLunker entry, Mr. Ramos’
donated the bass to the Texas

Towne Lake is a 22 acre
lake in Collin County, owned
by the City of McKinney. The
lake was completely drained
and renovated in 1988-89,
stocked with 8000 Florida
largemouth bass fry in 1989,
and 991 Florida largemouth
bass fingerlings in 1990 from
the Jasper Fish Hatchery. In
addition to other species, such
as bluegill, catfish, etc., the
lake is stocked annually with
rainbow trout for city hosted
trout derbies.

“The Little Paper With Big Bass Results”
Fishin Lake Fork with Jimmy Everett
March is here, which means
big bass season is in full swing.
More big fish are caught this
time of year than any other. The
bass have spawn on the brain,
and with some warm weather
you can have an incredible day
of bass fishing.
There will be big waves
of fish coming into spawning
flats and shallow creeks to spawn
this month. This will make the
perfect opportunity to pull a
big fish out of the water. This
Also means one of my favorites,
SIGHT- FISHING. This is a blast
if you have never tried it.
All of my fishing will
come from shallow water this
month in anywhere from inches
of water to 12 feet of water. The
best places will be creek channels
leading into spawning flats and
the spawning flats them selves.
I will be fishing quite a
few baits, so I will go over some
of the ones that will put the majority of fish in the boat for me.
The best bait for big fish will

strong hits.
I have had my clients
flip to a tree, let it fall beside the
tree, give it a few shakes, let it
pause for a sec. or two, and then
move to the next stump. I have
been flipping a 7 foot heavy action rod, a high speed reel, and
50lb. Power Pro line. This line I
feel has made a big difference in
my jig fishing. Everything feels
better and you don’t have to
worry about losing a fish. If they
wrap up just horse them around
the tree and put them in the boat.
It’s awesome. I have never been
a big fan of braided line but for
this situation I don’t think it can
be beat.

Run these baits over the grass,
just letting the bait tick the grass
as it goes over. If you get a little
snagged in the grass, rip it out
and keep going. The bites are
getting a lot easier to feel as the
fish are starting to give it a thump
in stead of feeling like your in a
patch of grass. Once again I’m
throwing these baits in 2 to 7 feet
of water and in the creeks. I am
fishing these in the whole creek.
From the mouth to the back and
anywhere there is grass. Grass is
a big key in fishing these baits.
There are many creeks without
any grass but don’t feel like you
can’t catch fish in these creeks.
Fish the cranks in and around
shallow timber and deeper banks
for some good results.
The other baits I will be
throwing is a Gary Yamamoto 5

shades of watermelon or a Lake
Fork Tackle (www.lakeforktackle.com) Ring Fry also in shades
of watermelon. Throw these
baits along the grass edges or in
the bends of creek channels in 4
to 8 feet of water. Sometimes a
split shot is necessary to keep a
good feel on the bait if the wind
starts to pick up. Fish these baits
very slow with a long pause in
between pulls or twitches. Most
of the bites are coming while the
bait is sitting still. Keep a tight
line to detect the bites. The bites
have been pretty easy to feel as
long as you have tension on the

Fishing with Lake Fork guide Jim Reaneau
This is the time of year we all
wait for. This is the start of the
spawn. The first full moon usually starts the spawning activity. The water temp will control
the spawn. When the water gets
to the mid fifties, the males will
move up and look for areas to
build a nest. They will fan out an
area and get the house keeping
going. When the water temp gets
to 60, the females will show up
waiting for a male to usher them
into there nest so they can set up
house keeping. Once the eggs are
laid, then the female will leave
and the male will be on guard till
they hatch. Then he will guard
the fry till they get about 3⁄4 inch
long, he will then leave them to
make it on there own.
Now, how to catch these
fish. The weightless baits will be
good fish catching baits. But the
jig and pig flipped around trees,
stumps, and edges of grass are
good big fish baits. The wave
Worm Tiki Stick fished weightless over the grass and from the
bank out can be great. Be sure to
let the fish have the bait a second
or too before setting the hook.
They will usually swim with the
tail in their mouths before sucking the bait in. This will hold true
for just about any bait.
I like to set up a light
weight Carolina rig. This consist
of a 3/16 to a 1⁄4 ounce bullet
weight pegged about a foot up
the line. I will put a lizard on this
and fish it parallel to the shore
out to about ten foot of water. A
Texas rig with a lizard is another
good bait around the bank and
timber. The lipless crank bait,
spinner bait, and rogues will be
good starters.
When we have cold
fronts coming in the water temp
may drop a little, but the fish
wont leave, only move out a little
deeper. On the cold fronts it will
take a slower presentation to get
the fish to bite.
Remember, the fish are
not feeding as much as they are
protecting their homes and babies. I have tried to explain this
many times to the fishermen in
my boat. This is why they really
stall when the cold fronts come
in. Just think what your wife was
like during her eight month of
pregnancy. Everything can make
them happy and some days it can
make them mad.
Once the eggs are laid, the male
will become very aggressive and
anything in the nest will become
a threat to their household. This
is a good time of year to watch
fish as they hit your bait. When
the spawn gets into full swing
there will be fish you will be able
to see sitting on nest. Flip a bait
to the nest and watch the fish,
how it reacts to your bait. Watch
how many times they will hit
your bait or pick it up and swim
off with it, and you wont feel

anything on the line. This will
amaze you. The thing is, how
many times a day does this happen during a fishing day, and we
thought we never had a hit. But
this is a very important time.
The hatch is our life for
the future. So be sure to handle
the fish as little as possible and
get them back as soon as possible
so they can protect there eggs or
young.
The fish will be caught
many times for the next two
months. You can look at their
lips and see where they have
been caught. The big thing is to
keep them off the carpet, as this
will remove the protective slime.
You will see some fish that will
have a brown fungus on them
and look sick. These fish are the
ones that were handled to much
or dropped on the carpet. Just be
careful and get them back to the
lake.

ONE OF THE LARGEST TACKLE STORES ON THE LAKE
CATFISH REPORT
Well, I’m going to be honest with you, Feb. was not a
good month for catfish. The cold weather and the high winds
have limited me from going out. As I am writing this article on
Feb.19, the temperature is 28 degrees with patches of ice on the
roads and boat ramps.
I did manage to get out at the first of the month and try a
few holes where we had baited out before. We caught a few, but
nothing to brag about. I did catch one nice catfish that went 8.6
pounds, casting cut bait under trees where the water turkeys were
sitting. It’s been so windy this has been hard to do.
Since the catfish were slow, I went out crappie fishing a
few times. We located the fish in 42 ft. of water off the points of
Little Caney down by the dam. Just look for the boats and read
your electronics and you can locate some fish. We tried some
jigs, but all the fish were caught on minnows a few cranks off the
bottom.
Starting in March the crappie will start to move under
the bridges. This is where I like to fish for crappie because you
can tie up to the bridge columns and really sack up a nice mess
of fish.
Along with catching crappie you will also catch some
yellow bass. A lot of people don’t realize that those little yellow
bass are very tasty. They are starting to get a little bigger now
too. Last year a new lake record was caught that went close to 4.5
pounds. I bet that fish fought like a 10 pound bass. They are fun
to catch and they fight all the way to the boat.
Hopefully next month the weather will start warming up
and the catfish will start biting. If they don’t I know the crappie
will. I’d rather catch catfish because they fight harder than crappie do.
I’ve had several calls on where to find Danny Kings
punchbait. You can find this bait all around Lake Fork. Some
of the stores that carry it are, The Country Store, Fisherman’s
One Stop, The Tackle Outlet on Hwy. 154 north of Yantis, and
Wal-Mart has it in Mineola and Sulphur Springs. This bait is my
favorite bait to catch catfish.
One other subject I’d like to talk about is the proposal
of bow fishing for catfish. I strongly disagree with this and urge
every catfisherman to write the Texas Parks and Wildlife public
comment, 4200 Smith School Rd., Austin, Texas 78744. Please
write them and let them know what you think of this new law
they are trying to pass. I have and I hope a lot of other people do
too! There are plenty of gar and carp out there for them to bow
hunt, please leave the catfish alone.
Until next month be safe and good fishing.
Stan Kuhn.

Jim’s Corner Article by Lake Fork guide Jim Reaneau
This month I am going
to try and explain channel fishing.
When I started bass
fishing one thing I will always
remember is going to a creek
when all else fails, because fish
will relate to a channel.
Many times articles
are written about following a
channel. What is a channel?
Usually this is a creek or river.
But, a channel can be a man
made ditch that was dredged
out. If you look up on the bank
and see a small valley between
two small hills that feed into the
lake, this is what I call a foul
weather creek. By this I mean
only when you get rain do you
see water coming into the lake.
These areas are a little deeper
than the water close by. Again,
a channel is formed, this may
lead out into the lake for some
distance. Most of the time you
can see a channel when it is go-
ing back into coves.
But, if this is a lake and
you are out in the middle, how
do you find the channel. The
best way is to look at a good
map and use your electronics to
find the drop off. As you drive
over the creek or river drop a
marker. Then criss cross up a
ways and drop another marker.
Now use your trolling motor
and your front graph and follow it from one marker to the
next. Once you feel comfortable
with being able to follow it, get
your map and look for bends as
this is where most fish will be
caught. Using your markers will
give you a good reference point
and you can move them as you
move along the channel.
Look for humps on the
sides as these will be good areas
to work a Carolina rig or crank
bait.
If your lake is low like
ours, the channels are easy to
find and follow. Usually your
bigger trees will line the banks
of the old creek or river channels. Find the bends and work
them with crank baits, jig, jigging spoons and Texas rig. This
is a slow process but can be very
rewarding.
During the spring the fish will
use the channels to get to the
back of creeks. As lakes get
older the small feeder creeks silt
in and are harder to find. Criss
cross back and forth and look
for the deepest water this will
be your creek bed. You may not
find a drop off where the creek
is, just a subtle depth change.
During the spring as weather
changes the water temp, the
fish will move back to the edges
of the creek. When you study
your map look for other ditches,
creeks, and drop offs around the
area you are fishing, as these
will be fish magnets. Drop your
markers and work these areas
very good. Move slowly and replace your markers as you move
along. If you have GPS mark
the spots that produce best.
Remember, the fish will move
along the channels so your spot
may move in a few days or after
a season.
When the bite is tough
along the bank and you are
about to give up, don’t forget to
check out a few channels. You
may only catch one but then
again you may load the boat.
I will always remember
Tom Mann when he caught 10
fish that was 100 plus pounds
with a little George, off a plateau on a river channel. This
was in the seventies. So keep
this is mind the next time you
go out.
You can always book
a trip if you want to get some
first hand knowledge of channel
fishing.

Deer Lake Cabins provides the
ideal setting to experience the
changing of seasons in East Texas.
Dallas, TX – February 22,
2006 – With the changing of
months comes the turning of
the seasons and there is no better place to witness the beauty
of an East Texas spring than at
Deer Lake Cabins (www.deerlakecabins.com). Springtime
visitors can witness first hand
the blossoming of the beautiful dogwood trees that inhabit
the nearly 900 acres of private
property. The popularity of
this annual occurrence prompts
numerous festivals in the area
throughout March and April.
In addition to blossoming dogwoods, the Piney Woods of
East Texas is also home to several other breathtaking flowers such as daffodils, jonquils,
azaleas and of course the Texas
State Flower the bluebonnet.
Deer Lake Cabins also sits
in what is commonly referred
to as Lake Country due to the
close proximity of so many
of the area lakes, which offer
plenty of recreational activities. Lake Fork is known as
the top bass fishing lake in
Texas. Lake Cypress Springs,
which Deer Lake Cabins is adjacently located to, is known as
the cleanest lake in Texas and
is spring fed. Lake Bob Sandlin, connected to Lake Cypress
Springs, has a 640-acre state
park that offers excellent day
use amenities. There are also
countless other smaller lakes
for people looking for seclusion and relaxation, including
two stocked fishing lakes right
on the property.
Possibly the most exciting part about spending time at
Deer lake Cabins is the exposure to the vast array of wildlife
that call the woods of the property home. It is not uncommon
to see groups of deer roaming
the countryside in the morn-
ings and evenings. Bird watching enthusiasts will appreciate
the diversity of birds that occupy the trees and lakes such
as ducks, geese, blue jays, cardinals and even the occasional
bald eagle to name a few. The
lakes and ponds located on the
property also provide excellent
habitat for all types of reptiles
and amphibians.
Deer Lake Cabins has
something for everyone, including fine fishing, amazing
nature trails, horseback rides,
children’s playgrounds, boat
rentals and of course the luxurious, spacious cabins. Whether

Fishin with Jimmy Everett
Continued from page 8
sist of a few baits and a simple
plan. Find shallow water in the
creeks, take a good pair of polarized sunglasses, set your trolling motor on go, and start running the banks and flats looking
for fish on beds. Once you find
a fish, flip and pitch to the fish
until it becomes aggravated and
hits your bait. It sounds very
easy but there are many different
techniques for these fish that can
make them easier to catch. Many
will find this much harder than I
am making it sound.
For my bait selection
I keep it simple. Something in
white, orange, methiolate, or
bubble gum. I will fish many different baits like a Strike Works
Jig
(www.strikeworkstackle.
com), Texas rigged Gary Yamamoto (www.baits.com) or Lake
Fork Tackle (www.lakeforktackle.com) Tubes, Creature baits,
Lizards, or Craws. Stay back
from your fish, don’t sit right on
top of them and hold on for an
exciting type of fishing.
Have a great time on the
lake, good luck , and be safe

IN THE NEW KREATURE BAITS,
MANY MORE!
When it comes to rubbing bass the wrong way,
Yamamoto’s soft jerkbait is the ultimate rebel.
The Senko is one of the most enticing and
versatile finesse lures ever invented. Not only
does the bait have incredible action, but it casts
like a bullet and gets into the strike zone quickly.
In addition to its high standing as a darting,
diving, soft jerkbait, the Senko doubles nicely
as a “do nothing” Carolina-rig bait. It will also
produce strikes when fished wacky style.
