THE NEW JERSEY HERALD
B—3
Adult should be able to tell ‘woman’ he’s e-mailing is a teen
DEAR ANNIE: I just discovered that my 14-year-old daughter, “Melissa,” has a MySpace
account where she is posing as a
21-year-old. She posted pictures
of some other female and said
they were of herself.
A military man, 27 years old,
has been e-mailing her, and
some of his letters are rather
explicit. Of course, I will take
steps with my daughter to see
that this does not happen again
and I hope communication
between us gets better. But I am
furious with this man. Perhaps
he legitimately thought she was
21, but I don’t believe it. Any
adult with half a mind could ask
the right questions and discover
the writer was a child. I could
tell from her first e-mail.
Assuming he isn’t stupid, there
is nothing else to think but that
he is a predator.
I have his name, phone number and address, and I have
turned that information over to
the authorities in my state and
the military. Please advise anyone legitimately trying to find a
mate online to ask the right
questions to determine whether
the future mate is of age. For
example, ask a supposed 21year-old if she is in school and
what subjects she’s taking. If she
tells you she’s studying fractions
and geometry, you know she’s
barely out of grade school. —
Disappointed and Furious
Dear Disappointed: Don’t be
naive. Any girl who would lie
about her age could just as easily lie about what subjects she’s
taking in school. We know you
are frightened for your daughter
and worried about what might
have
happened, and
we
don’t
blame you.
But it is very
difficult
to
discern the
truth
over
the Internet.
Yes, adults
need to be
circumspect,
MITCHELL
SUGAR
but all parents should
supervise what their children
are doing online, teaching them
how to protect themselves from
predators and why deliberately
misrepresenting
themselves
can lead to major trouble or
worse.
DEAR ANNIE: What do you
make of a man who finds it necessary to tell you about his past

DEAR ANNIE: The letter
from “Confused in California”
broke my heart. His best friend,
“Alex,” is gay and Dad won’t let
them hang out anymore. As you
can see, homophobia hurts
everyone, not just gay people.
There isn’t much a 15-yearold can do when he’s living
under the tyranny of such a misguided father except try his best
to continue with what he
believes is right and be a true
friend. One day soon, both boys
will be able to move away from
home and be friends with
whomever they like, but sadly,
not soon enough.
I’m a 26-year-old gay man,
and when I came out, I was lucky
to have friends, gay and straight,
who cared enough to help me

Today is Thursday, March 27, the 87th day of
2008. There are 279 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
On March 27, 1977, 583 people were killed
when a KLM Boeing 747, attempting to take off,
crashed into a Pan Am 747 on the Canary Island
of Tenerife.
On this date:
In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon
sighted present-day Florida.
In 1625, Charles I acceded to the English
throne upon the death of James I.
In 1794, Congress approved “An Act to provide
a Naval Armament” of six armed ships.
In 1836, the first Mormon temple was dedicated, in Kirtland, Ohio.
In 1945, during World War II, Gen. Dwight D.
Eisenhower told reporters in Paris that German
defenses on the Western Front had been broken.
In 1958, Nikita Khrushchev became Soviet premier in addition to First Secretary of the
Communist Party.
In 1964, Alaska was hit by a powerful earthquake and tsunamis that killed about 130 people.
In 1968, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the
first man to orbit the earth, died in a plane crash.
In 1980, 123 workers died when a North Sea
floating oil field platform, the Alexander
Kielland, capsized during a storm.
In 1996, an Israeli court convicted Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s confessed assassin of
murder, then sentenced former law student Yigal
Amir to life in prison.
Ten years ago: The Food and Drug
Administration approved the drug Viagra, made
by Pfizer, saying it had helped about two-thirds of
impotent men improve their sexual function.
Ferdinand Porsche Jr., who founded the sports
car firm that bears his name, died at age 88 in
Zell am See, Austria.
Five years ago: Serbian police killed two major
suspects in the assassination of Prime Minister
Zoran Djindjic. Russia’s Evgeni Plushenko won
his second World Figure Skating Championships
title, edging American Tim Goebel. Pulitzer
Prize-winning playwright Paul Zindel died in

longer afraid do we begin to live.” — Dorothy
Thompson, American journalist (1894-1961).
through the difficulties with my
parents. If “Confused’s” mother
doesn’t share Dad’s backward
attitude toward gay people, he
should continue talking to her,
even if she is unable to persuade
his father to be more reasonable.
I wish both kids the best. The
next few years are going to be
tough, and they will need the
kind of strong friendship they
have in each other. —

Horoscopes by Holiday
by Holiday Mathis
THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2008
Mercury, Uranus and Jupiter align for a cosmic cocktail party. It's a consciousness-raising
party too, as everyone's sharing his or her two
cents on everything from global warming to the
gorgeous brainchild of the moment. So mingle,
mingle, mingle! You never know who you're
talking to, and how that bright idea of yours
will pay off.
ARIES (March 21-April 19). Regarding that
conversation you think you need to have with
someone -- make it short. One sentence. Five
words will do it. You give your words more
power when you use them sparingly.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Multitasking is
usually not as productive for you as a single
focus. Though you're better off doing one thing
at a time, switch projects after about two hours.
You'll accomplish an impressive amount.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Your imagination
dances. You may even feel ready to let your
brainchildren be seen by others. A Capricorn
can help you design a plan that will allow your
project to attract the right kind of attention.
CANCER (June 22-July 22). People make
decisions you weren't expecting, and it affects
you directly. Your first reaction is extreme.
What you think of after a few hours will be
much more reasonable and ultimately good for
everyone.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The stars highlight
your talent for working well with those who
have special requirements. The young, elderly,
sick or just plain difficult people are drawn to
you. They need your care, and you need to give
it to them.
TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (March 27). This year,
you're the master of workable solutions, the
wizard of results. People at work grow to
depend on you through the spring, and by June,
you can ask for that much deserved raise. June
is the most romantic month, partly due to new
locations you visit. Your ties to Libra and
Pisces bring wonder to your world. Your lucky
numbers are: 7, 12, 16, 25, and 33.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). It's been said that
the meek will inherit the earth. But not today.
Bold moves are rewarded. You can be strong
without being pushy, ambitious but not smarmy.
You find a charming middle ground.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You learn the truth.
And you know exactly where to go from there.
What happens during your personal breakthrough may be small as a breath. But the realization will be grand.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You like to prove
that you are capable and independent.
However, it's really not necessary to travel your
road alone. Let someone who's been there
before show you the potholes to avoid.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Before you
bail on a relationship, be realistic. You're not
going to love every minute of any relationship.
Cut through petty annoyances and look at the
fundamentals before you make a decision.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You're on the
move, ready to find your way in new places and
forge new connections. If you must bring a companion on this journey, just make sure it's
someone who wants to go almost as much as
you do.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Approach a
romantic problems from every possible angle;
answers are available but not obvious. When in
doubt, give. It's almost impossible to "give until
it hurts" because the hurting never comes.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). It's a strange
social fact that people like those they have
helped better than those who have helped
them. So don't be afraid to ask for assistance.
You could be strengthening a bond by doing so.
ASTROLOGICAL QUESTIONS: "I consider
myself a rational, practical person. Yet when I
tell people that I follow astrology, their skepticism challenges me. I'm not sure if I even
believe in astrology, and I certainly can't justify
why it speaks to me, it just does."
I get thousands of letters from astrology readers, but my favorites are the ones that start, "I
don't believe in astrology ... " and end " ... so
what's in the stars for me?" Plenty of people
don't believe, but "believing" is kind of beside
the point. You can use astrology whether you're
a believer or not. Astrology provides an opportunity to pause for self-reflection. It's all about
the personal: What's happening to you, in your
life and in your head? Instead of expecting
your horoscope to predict the future, try reading your horoscope at the end of the day -- as a
way of looking back on the events and interactions you've had since you woke up, and thinking about what they meant to you, how they
shaped you, what your reactions said about
you. (For more about how to use astrology in
your daily life, check out my book, "Rock Your
Stars: Your Astrological Guide to Getting it
All.")
CELEBRITY PROFILES: Aries people are
zealous. Whether strategizing a project or
hedging bets on a baseball game, miniscule or
massive -- size doesn't matter -- their fervor is
"of the moment." Vince Vaughn has this zeal,
and he's as earnest as he is possessed. It's as
though through sheer grit and wit, Vince has
made even the most remotely likable characters endearing.

Flaws sink
print’s value

Q: Could you please
give me some information on this print. It

After a lot of squinting and peering, we The print “Battle of Omduman Sept 2, 1898”

Spruce up for spring

CAREY
For The Associated Press
Nothing beats listening to your
favorite baseball team inch its way
to the Series stretched out on a
lounge chair on your beautiful
deck. But right about now, your
patio might look pretty grungy
from winter leaf and debris stains.
Give it a good cleaning with a
1
solution of ⁄3 cup of powdered laundry detergent to one gallon of hot
water. Scrub vigorously with a stiff
nylon brush or bristle broom and
thoroughly rinse with fresh water.
Add one quart of liquid chlorine
bleach to the solution if mildew is
present. If your deck or patio still
looks dingy, consider using a deck
cleaning or brightening product to
restore the appearance of the natural wood. Use a concrete cleaner
to remove oxidation on concrete
and restore the appearance of
your patio. Remember eye protection and rubber gloves.
Make repairs to damaged decking, secure fasteners and apply a
fresh coat of deck finish. Although
not necessary, a concrete sealer
can breathe new life into the
appearance of your patio and protect it from freeze and thaw damage if you live in a cold climate.
CLEANING
Despite your best intentions,
your garage or basement might be
filled with a rummage sale’s worth
of stuff and a maze of cobwebs.
Time to play ball.
Work from the top down. Dusty
walls and ceilings, dingy light fixtures and door and window trim
should be tackled before other elements in the space. Windows, closets and furniture are next. Window
and floor coverings should be last.
This might include floor stripping,
carpet cleaning and polishing.
Start at your home’s perimeter
so you don’t track over already
cleaned central spaces. And don’t
forget to dust the top ledge of all
doors.
LAWN CARE
Winter’s gone and your lawn’s a
mess. Start by taking a soil sample.
Your local county extension office
will do an inexpensive analysis
that tells you exactly what fertilizer you need, and if it changed since
last year.
Then consult your garden center before you reseed to be sure
you have the best and latest variety. New stronger drought-resistant and heat-tolerant types constantly are being introduced.
When things start to grow, don’t
mow too low. Cutting grass too
short, especially the first time, can
harm the lawn and lead to root
damage. As a rule of thumb, never
trim off more than a third.
Finally, an inch of water once a
week is enough.

Residents of Liberty Towers in Newton have “Gone Green” by using energy-efficient lightbulbs and through other actions.
Liberty Towers increases energy efficiency
While many celebrated the
spirit of St. Patrick’s Day by
wearing green, residents of
Liberty Towers of Newton
wore green to acknowledge
their efforts to go green by
reducing, reusing and recycling.
Management has encouraged residents to take part in
the energy-saving effort by
signing a pledge to help. By
signing the pledge, residents
committed to turning their
lights off when they are not
home, reporting drips and
leaks from faucets immediately, and using only energy-efficient bulbs in their light fixtures.
Residents already have a
recycling system in place, but
are encouraged to do even
more by reusing and recycling.
Residents can purchase
compact fluorescent bulbs
from the main office at Liberty
Towers to replace standard
incandescent bulbs that use
more energy.
Part of the thrust behind the
campaign was a utility consumption analysis completed
by Dr. Kimberly Woodhull,
executive director of the facility. According to her calculations, between July 1, 2006 and
June 30, 2007, Liberty Towers
consumed more than 2 million
gallons of water and sewer
usage, 324,200 kilowatt hours
of electricity, and 27,881 gallons
of fuel oil.
Woodhull
said
Liberty
Towers has taken huge steps
forward in its effort to conserve by replacing single-pane
windows with thermal-insulated windows, replacing weather-stripping, purchasing only
energy-efficient appliances,
and using only energy-saving
bulbs in its five-story facility.
Last year, the facility signed
on to participate in the Energy
Star Change a Light Campaign, setting a goal of 100
pledges, which will save 28,200
kWh of energy and prevent
40,900 pounds of greenhouse
gas emissions.
The front portion of the
building has been enclosed to
reduce the amount of fuel that
was required to heat that portion of the building during the
winter. It has become a sitting
and recreation area for residents and their guests in
warmer months.
The following are a few steps
taken by the Newton Housing
Authority at Liberty Towers
that may help other offices in
the area:
• Keep mailing lists current
to avoid duplicate mailings
• Save information and documents electronically rather
than printing hard copies
• Proofread documents on
the computer in lieu of printing them for proofing
• Reduce junk mail and
duplicate mailings from other
businesses by requesting to
be removed from their mailing list instead of just tossing
the mail in the trash
Purchase items used frequently in bulk and order others only when needed to avoid
excess
• Stay organized so it is possible to locate supplies instead
of buying new ones
• Purchase remanufactured
fax, ink and toner cartridges
and/or return them to the supplier for remanufacture.
• Use ceramic coffee cups,
utensils and plates instead of
Styrofoam
• Establish regular maintenance check-ups for frequently
used pieces of equipment to
extend their life.
• Use products that are
more durable, recyclable or
reusable
• Make double-sided copies
instead of single-sided
• Reuse single-sided paper
for fax paper
• Sell or give old unused furniture and equipment to other
businesses
or
charitable
organizations.
Use a light hand when pruning trees
By LEE REICH
Spring is an ideal time to prune
most trees and shrubs is just as
their buds are swelling.
Leafless stems make it easy to
see where to cut, dead stems make
their presence known, and with
coldest weather past, chances for
cold damage near cuts are minimized. Warmer spring weather
also promotes rapid healing of
cuts.
Whole books have been written
about pruning (I wrote one myself,
“The Pruning Book”), yet its
essence can be distilled to a few
general pointers. The 10 listed
below won’t result in an expert
pruning job, but will keep you and
your plants reasonably happy.
USE A LIGHT HAND ON TREES
• Prune young trees as little as
possible. Any pruning ultimately
slows growth.
• On any tree, cut away watersprouts and root sprouts. These
vigorous, vertical shoots — the
first originating in the branches
and the second at the base of the
tree — soak up the plant’s energy,
look unattractive, and bear few or
no flowers or fruits.
Sharon and potentilla, now or anytime in early spring.
USE A HEAVIER HAND ON BUSHES
• Avoid hedge shears on bushes, except for those trained to formal shapes. Prune most bushes by
a renewal method, every year lopping some of the oldest stems to
the ground to make way for young
sprouts. In this way, the bush
maintains a graceful fountainlike
shape without ever accumulating
any decrepit stems.
• Tailor how much you prune
any bush to its growth habit.
Forsythia and lilac sucker abundantly, so remove some older
stems every year to make way for
new ones. Bushes that make few
suckers — such as witchhazel and
rhododendron — need their oldest
stems cut back only infrequently, if
at all.
•Wait to prune spring flowering
bushes, such as spiraea and mock
orange, until right after their blossoms fade or else you will be
removing some of the flower buds
soon to unfold. Prune spring flowering bushes, such as rose-of-
FRUITS ARE SPECIAL
• Almost all fruit plants need
regular pruning. The amount
depends on where a plant bears its
fruits. For example: apple trees
bear fruits on long-lived stubby
growths, so need only moderate
pruning. Peaches, in contrast,
need severe pruning to stimulate
an annual supply of new shoots,
which are the only ones that bear
fruit the following year. Each raspberry cane dies at the end of its
second year, so completely cut
away all old canes. Also remove
some young canes — which will
bear this year — so that those that
remain are no closer than 6 inches
apart.
AND FOR ALL PLANTS
• Don’t cut unless you have a
clear reason to do so. Trees and
shrubs vary in their needs for
pruning, from, for example,
Japanese maple and witch hazel,
which need no regular pruning, to
butterfly bush and lilac, which
need annual pruning to look their
best.
• No matter what the plant, cut
all dead and diseased stems back
to healthy wood. Also prune back
broken stems, as well as those that
are obviously out of place or rubbing against others.
• Tailor each cut to the response
you want from the plant. Where
you want increased branching,
shorten a stem. Where you want
less congestion or to make a plant
smaller, remove whole stems or
limbs.
• Always use a tool appropriate
to the job. For stems a half inch or
less in diameter, use hand-held
pruning shears. Cut stems up to
an inch-and-a-half across with a
long handled lopper. For even
thicker wood, use a pruning saw,
which differs from a shop saw in
having special teeth that do not
become clogged by green wood.
Use hedge shears for formal
hedges, hand shears and loppers
for informal hedges. Make sure
that your pruning tools are sharp
and clean, because plants heal
quickest when cuts are clean.
Find out why floor vinyl is curling before replacing it
By MORRIS and JAMES
CAREY
For The Associated Press
Q. The vinyl in my bathroom is
curling up at one of the seams. It is
quite unsightly and is becoming a
real maintenance problem. Is
there anything I can do to fix it?
A. Yes, but first it’s important to
find out why it is curling. One of the
most common causes of curling
vinyl is excessive dampness in the
crawl space caused by poor ventilation. In your case, a quick check
of the crawl space is in order and
so is improved ventilation.
Install additional foundation
vents at the perimeter.
As far as the floor repair is concerned, start by applying some
heat to the seam with an iron. Lay
a towel down first to prevent damage to the vinyl. Apply steady, even
heat while pulling open the seam a
couple of inches. This will permit
you to clean the area up with a vac-
uum and apply some fresh vinyl
adhesive. Use a modest amount
though — too much will cause the
vinyl to ripple. Re-lay the vinyl and
apply constant pressure to the
area with heavy objects like books.
After several hours, remove the
weight and apply a bead of clear
vinyl seam sealer at the joint.
