Turf Update Membership Invoices
WHITFORD HC
Turf Update
The City of Joondalup was partially successful in its application for State
Government funding for the hockey clubroom and turf development at Warwick
Open Space. The development was ranked as the City’s highest priority project
in the 2014/15 funding round for the Community Sporting and Recreation
Facilities Fund (CSRFF), and received $1.2 million of the $17.7 million allocated
for the entire State of WA which is available for spending over 2015 to 2017.
Whilst a substantial grant in its own right, it was short of the $2.3 million
requested in the application and leaves a funding shortfall on the $7 million
project. The City Council will consider options at its meeting in April, at which
point we should have some greater clarity as to the scope and timing of the
development.
It will also enable the Club to plan and begin its fundraising activities. We have
agreed to contribute $600,000 to the development, of which $300,000 has
already been secured.
If there are any members who have experience in community developments or
fundraising such as is planned and are willing to assist on our project
coordination team, please contact David Moroney on 0409 299 355 or

Membership Invoices
For those of you who have already registered, you are probably wondering why you’ve been waiting so long to
receive your invoice. Unfortunately, due to the new Registration system implemented by Hockey Australia this year,
we have been severely delayed in being able to upload your information and therefore we have not been able to
produce member invoices. This is totally out of our control, and very frustrating and we apologise for this
delay. We may not be able to get your invoice sent until early to mid-May and with this in mind, we are extending
the “Early Bird” fee deadline from April 30, until the May 31 this year, to give you a bit of extra time once your
invoice arrives to get this paid. We would however, be very grateful of your early payment once you do receive
your invoice if you are able to do so. The final deadline for fee and levy payments will now be June 30 when the “no
pay – no play” rule will come into action.
In the meantime, if anyone is needing to discuss a payment plan for whatever circumstances, please don’t hesitate to
contact me – [email protected] and we can work out what is required. All deadlines will still apply.
Pre-season so far…..
Women’s
The Ladies squads have been working hard throughout pre-season. With team fitness training starting back in
January, the teams begin their league campaigns next weekend, with the Ladies 1s starting the following week.
Having lost a couple of players, it is pleasing to see a number of new faces join the club as well as juniors stepping up
into the seniors teams.
Pre-season games have been coming think and fast with some good results. This included taking a small squad up to
the Geraldton Skins tournament in February, where the girls reached the final and faced Aquinas (for the fifth time
since Jan). Having lost all of these games in previous weeks the team really stepped it up and with the scores level at
1-1 after normal time we took them on and beat them in a sudden death shootout to take home the $1500 cash
prize- Thank you to Pete Hocking for driving us and Fie for organising
the trip. In other pre-season games for the 1s, results have included,
Raiders (D2-2), Subs (W4-3) and Rockingham (W2-0), with the 2s going
down 1-0 to Raiders.
There will be three imports arriving before Easter ready to play in
Round 2. These include Fay Nash (England), Roël Kuyvenhoven
(Holland) and Goalkeeper, Nga Arahanga-Doyle (New Zealand). A
special thanks to Anna Schwartz who is covering in the net in Round 1.
With the difficulties of last season, the girls are fired up and raring to go.
Men’s
Despite dropping a side for the 2014 season and only fielding 3 sides this year numbers are looking good and
hopefully we won’t be making last minute calls to put teams together. In total we have just short of 50 players in the
turf squads. John Hoff has agreed to step up and take charge of the 3s, with a healthy player list this year it should
mean a consistent side each week.
In the 1s and reserves there are just under 30 players fighting it out for a spot in the top two sides. We have
strengthened the squad since last year with Grant Collins (outgoing coach), Dusty Tame (Lakers), Shaun Wheatland
(Geraldton), Esias Ferreira (Sublions), Paul Betts (moved over from UK) and Duncan Riddell (Scotland). Duncan
will be one of two imports we have this year who will be also helping out around the club including coaching our
juniors.
Preseason has been great thanks to Jimmy Dawson running some very professional sessions. We have played some
good games competing with premier opposition including UWA, Peel and Guildford. The preseason games wrap up
with a triangular tournament with Rocky and Subslions. 22 players have made an appearance with all of them
making a claim for a place in the 1s 16 man squad. It is great to see some of our ex and current juniors making a
claim for a place with Sam Bodenstaff, Andrew Dawson and Lynden Ross all playing well. A couple of early injuries
have meant that we have not seen Dale Midolo and Todd Molloy yet but both will be fit and ready for round 1 and 2
respectively. Another player to note this year will be Keegan Koertzen who has spent the summer player with 30 of
best players of his age group in HWAs Talent Program.
Overall it should be an exciting season with what will be the strongest side Whitfords has ever put out in the league.
The competition is also hotting up with other clubs recruiting well here and overseas.

Umpiring
Hi everyone!
Well welcome again to hockey for season 2014 - and I am sure that everyone is not only raring to get onto the
field and play as well as jump straight into umpiring! Yay! I can hear the cheers already!
Seriously though folks, I know that umpiring is looked upon with dread and foreboding by most. But it's an
integral part of our game. For seniors, this year we'll have as usual our umpiring byes so we're all going to
have to do it. When you registered, you agreed to umpire as well as play, so suck it up! As a reminder to all THERE IS NO LIST OF "ON CALL" OR RESERVE CLUB UMPIRES! Why you may ask? Because every time I
ask for nominations, the silence is deafening and so the list consists of me and no one else.
Captains, you are responsible for ensuring their team provides someone. Players, when you are picked to do
it, YOU are responsible for finding someone to umpire if you can't/won't do it. I am generally NOT available
and people who ring me on a Friday evening asking me to umpire on Saturday or Sunday won't get any
help. Fixtures come out for the whole season, so it's not like you don't know when the umpiring bye is. So
talk early to your captain and other team mates, see if there are other Whitfords teams playing where you are
umpiring or call the home club.
Sorry to be a bit harsh about this - but some of the excuses I've heard with phone calls at 1pm on Saturday
afternoon to umpire a 2pm game.....Grrr!... "Not good at umpiring" is NOT an acceptable excuse. If you've
ever complained about an umpiring decision it means that you think that you would've done better, so get out
there and prove it!
On a positive note though, I am a club resource for the rules and umpire training. So if you need to go over the
rules or want some basic umpire refresher training - either as a team or individually, I am more than willing
to help so just ask and we'll arrange a time. For the coaches of the juniors, if you'd like me to come along to a
training session with your players or a "welcome to Hockey rules - Q&A" session with your parents, again, just
ask.....
Speaking of rules, captains and team officials of all grades (including juniors) make sure you read the
Association rules - they interpret the Rules of Hockey and there are some changes from last year. Here's the
link.... http://www.hockeywa.org.au/documents.cfm?searchTxt=Rules
And thinking about training, I've had a number of people ask me already about doing umpire training - I will
be kicking it off in the near future (we need some grounds!). In terms of format, at this stage I will run the
theory during an evening during the week (probably a Thurs night), then the practical over a couple
of Saturday mornings. I'm currently thinking of the second week in April - but this will depend on a range of
things. Watch this space.....
Ok quiz time.
1. When do you award a Penalty Corner (short corner)?
2. When can an opposition player be within 5 m when you play the ball from a penalty?
3. What is Danger?
Happy blowing!

New Rules for 2014
a. the "own goal" rule we were playing last year has been rescinded and is no longer in play. This now applies
to all grades at all levels. The published rule has reverted back to before the own goal and so reads:
8.1 A goal is scored when the ball is played within the circle by an attacker and does not travel outside
the circle before passing completely over the goal-line and under the crossbar.
The ball may be played by a defender or touch their body before or after being played in the circle by an
attacker.
b. Premier 1, Promotion 1, Premier 2, Promotion 2 and Premier Alliance grades have a range of options
available to them regards goalies - including not playing with a goalie. This DOES NOT APPLY in the lower
grades - there must be a goalie of some description in the lower grades. This is defined in the relevant Hockey
WA League rules, not the FIH Rules of Hockey. The Hockey WA League rules are on the HWA web site.
Club Rooms- **New opening times**
The Club Rooms are now open each Thursday night during the season. The uniform shop will now be open

The uniform shop will also be open on Saturdays if Gill is around (usually from about 6pm)

Bar Manager Required
A new bar manager is required to replace Jackie. It is preferred for the
new bar manager to be a non-player or coach, due to the times the bar is
open. Ideally someone who can who can devote time on a Saturday late
afternoon through to evening along with Thursday nights, however
Thursday’s are not crucial as it’s only the grassies & vets who are there on
Thursdays and we could manage to have someone on roster to look after
them if need be. We would prefer someone to do the lot, but Saturday’s
are our main concern. The person will need to have their RSA – and the
club will pay for this if they don’t have it already. Please contact

We need your help, does anyone in the club have a spare car that they are willing to loan to one of our import
players during the season. Our import players will be in and around the club regularly during the season helping
out by coaching junior sides, performing school coaching programs and offering junior clinics during the July
school holidays. In order for them to do all this it helps if they have transport. We also need places for them to
stay so if anyone can offer accommodation or can help in anyway please get in touch at:
