Paula Vidad Makes History
With Golden Ladies Victory
by Fred Eisenhammer
LAS VEGAS — Paula Vidad became the first player to
win the “triple crown” of senior women’s bowling and she
did it in impressive style.
Vidad came back from
an early 30-pin deficit in the
championship match to claim
the title of the 25th National
Golden Ladies Classic during a four-day tournament last
week at the Orleans Hotel and
Casino in Las Vegas.
The Golden Ladies title
allowed Vidad to complete a
sweep of the three senior wom-
en’s major events. She also
won the United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens
championship in 2011 and the
Senior U.S. Open championship in 2013 and 2014.
No other woman has won
titles in all three events.
The 55-year-old Vidad,
who lives in Sun City, Calif.,
admitted that winning all three
senior majors was a goal of
hers this year and “I was determined to do it,” she said.

MISSION HILLS — To
me August 16, 1974 is a day
not easily forgotten. The six
months leading up to that day
were filled with hard work, arguments, miscalculations, outright mistakes and a shortage
of money. But in the end we
pulled it off.
It was the day Mission
Hills Bowl opened for business. In the forty-one years
since that day, Mission has
enjoyed serving millions, yes
millions, of customers, a lot
of whom became friends. We
have seen marriages, divorces,
births and deaths.
Our first junior bowlers
grew up and had junior bowlers of their own and those junior bowlers had more junior
bowlers.
We survived earthquakes,
fires and recessions. The one
thing we can’t survive, however, is a short lease. We are
faced with spending a couple
of hundred thousand dollards
to do electrical and plumbing
upgrades to the 65 year old
building or we have been informed our insurance will be
non-renewed.
With few years remaining
on our existing lease and no
chance at a new lease it just
isn’t possible to continue. So
it is with much sadness in my
heart that I announce that Mission Hills Bowl will be closing
at the end of May.
PORTLAND, Maine –
With a sold-out crowd cheering
loudly throughout the competition, the Concrete Software
BROOKLYN STyLES and
Bass Pro Shops Silver Lake
Atom Splitters each won a
one-ball sudden-death roll-off
at Bayside Bowl to advance to
the semifinal round of the PBA
League Elias Cup playoffs.
The opening round of PBA
League competition aired Sunday on ESPN.
Bowling in the state of
Maine for the first time in
PBA history, and in a 12-lane
bowling center converted into
a two-lane arena for the PBA
League team competition, a
raucous, fun-loving crowd of
bowling fans cheered non-stop
throughout two best-of-twogame team matches, both of
which were decided by one pin
in one-ball roll-offs.
In the first match, the 2013
Elias Cup champion GEICO
New York City WTT KingPins, anchored by PBA Hall of
Famer Pete Weber, struggled
to a 182-171 victory over the
STyLES in a game marred by
four missed single-pin spare
conversion attempts between
the two teams.
“That was a display of
spare shooting like you’ve
never seen before,” STyLES
anchor bowler Parker Bohn
III said sarcastically. But the
STyLES found the pocket in
game two, putting together
strings of three strikes three
times to win, 247-148, and

PACITA BAKER - OUR CHAMPION
by Frank Weiler
MODESTO — Pacita Baker has just returned from this years
state BVL Tournament as a champion. While she didn’t place at
last weeks state tournament she is “OUR CHAMPION.”
She is our champion because she not only won our association BVL Tournament in December but also represented us in
Modesto with her usual class and grace. Also, she is our champion because she bowls in every one of our Citrus Belt tournaments. Old school participation. If only the USBC could find
more Pacita Bakers.
In December Pacita rolled a scratch 604 series to win the
Citrus Belt BVL Women’s Classic Division singles title. Pacita
used her Columbia Enigma, drilled by ZACK JELLSEY, to roll
her winning score and leaned heavily on husband John for help
with her lane adjustments. With Zack and John on her side, Pacita is hard to beat.
While Pacita usually averages in the 180s her best average
is 196. Her high game is 279 and series is 699. She has been
bowling for about fifty years, starting in the Philippines thanks to
husband JOHN BAKER.
Mrs. Baker’s favorite pro bowlers are WENDY McPHERSON and CHRIS BARNES. Her game reflects the influence
professional bowlers have on league bowlers. She emulates the
power of McPherson and the poise exhibited by Barnes. Thank
you BOWLING NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt women.

Some big, big news about
the ‘behemoth burger’
by FRED EISENHAMMER
WOODLAND HILLS — It may not be selling like hotcakes,
but it’s a whopper of a show-stopper.
That’s the “behemoth burger,” which AMF Woodlake Lanes
in Woodland Hills has been selling for about seven months from
the bowling center’s Ventura Café.
It’s a five-pound, 14-inch-round burger that the menu says is
“served with the works and made for sharing.”
Price tag: $54.99.
Richie Clark, the general manager of Woodlake Lanes, insists
“that’s cheap.”
The huge hunk of hamburger is meant to be shared by five
or six people and is typically sold at bowling parties or social
gatherings, Clark says.
The bowling house failed to sell any of those burgers for the
first month and a half after its debut, but Clark reports that sales
are picking up and there have been about 25 purchased in the last
4 ½ months.
The burger has generated considerable buzz around the San
Fernando Valley area because of its hefty price and tremendous
size.
Woodlake Lanes is part of the Bowlmor AMF bowling chain,
which offers the “behemoth burger” at some of its other centers
but not necessarily at the same price. One Texas bowling center, Clark says, sells about “25 to 30” a month of the “behemoth
burgers.”
Clark says he’s eaten the “behemoth burger” several times. “I
think it’s really good. You’d think it’s just a blah, generic thing
that’s five pounds. But it’s actually quite tasty,” he says.
The “behemoth burger” is cooked fresh and takes about a
half-hour to make.
Woodlake Lanes rolled out the “behemoth burger” during
league play one night a few months ago and allowed bowlers to
sample it.
Those who ate it that night gave it a thumbs up.
“It was good, really good,” Geoff Gast said. “And it was
free.”
Others stayed clear.
“There’s no reason to eat something that big,” Diane Weed
said. Perry Haberman perhaps seemed to speak for many of his
fellow Woodlake Lanes bowlers last week when he was asked
whether he would order a “behemoth burger.”
“I’d eat it,” Haberman said, “if I didn’t have to pay for it.”

WINNETKA — It’s now been two years since Kelly Gold did
the unfathomable and unforgettable.
Bowling in her women’s travel league in January 2013, Gold
smoked back-to-back 300s in her first two games at Winnetka
Bowl. She added her 25th straight strike in the first frame of her
third game before finishing with a pedestrian 161 – and a powerful 761 series.
It’s believed that her back-to-back perfect games (the seventh
and eighth 300s of her careers) marked the first time a Los Angeles-area woman bowler has accomplished the feat. The stunning
performance elicited this reaction from Kelly Kulick, perhaps the
best pro women’s bowler in the country: “If you get 24 strikes in
a row, it’s like hitting three home runs in baseball.”
Gold returned to Winnetka Bowl for her women’s travel
league last week and she put on another show in her final two
games, blasting a 243 and 233 after struggling in the first game
with a 148.
In her final game, the stylish, right-handed Gold knocked
down strikes in her first seven frames, creating hopes among her
fans that she was headed for her ninth perfecto. But the streak
was broken when she left a messy split on a shot that was a tad
high on the pocket.
The two strong games gave Gold – a 212-average bowler
– additional encouragement to continue pursuing the goal that
keeps her motivated in the game: her first 800 series.
“I’m not giving up ’til I get my 800. And once I do that, I can
resign,” said Gold with a smile.
The fact that she has crushed back-to-back 300s and doesn’t
get rattled leaves her supporters confident that she will eventually achieve her goal. Her high series stands at 777, which she
rolled in 2009.
“Kelly’s my idol,” said Rick Auerbach, a former major league
infielder who recently racked up his fifth 300 game. “I tell her
that every week. She has eight certified 300s and a back-to-back
[300]. She’s the best in the area.”
Ace L.A. bowler Bob Englehart calls Gold’s twin perfectos
“an awesome accomplishment. I’ve never done that. She’s still
in her prime and has great game. And she’s very humble and that
makes her more attractive.”
Ileane Tober has been a longtime teammate of Gold’s in her
travel league. And Tober was with Gold when the latter crushed
her back-to-back 300 games.
“Kelly’s a great, great bowler,” Tober said. “I’ve seen her get
a 300 before, but to bowl back-to-back 300s, I’ve never seen that.
She was really focused.”
Asked what she remembered about the day of her back-toback 300s, Gold said last week that it all was a little hazy.
But a year earlier, Gold said this about her twin 300s: “I was
on another planet. It was surreal. It was like you were on your
own little lane by yourself and you can’t miss. And even if you
do miss, it still carried. It was crazy, unbelievable.”
The back-to-back perfect
games elevated Gold, a West Last Weeks Solution

ZACK KING
BOWLING’S FUTURE
by Therese Lloyd and Frank Weiler
SAN BERNARDINO
— Every weekend I practice for at least three hours.
Among other things I work
on adjustments, ball speed,
hand positions and spare
shooting. Every weekend
I see thirteen year old Zack
King practicing before I arrive and still practicing after
I leave. Zack is dedicated
to bowling and becoming a
good bowler. Zack works
hard at improving his game. When I see Zack I see a bright
future for our sport.
Zack’s dedication and hard work is paying off. He has lifted
his average from 130 to 154. His high game has gone from 181
to 220 and high series from 428 to 500. All of this in two and a
half months. Last week Zack bowled a 192 game against me.
Better still, Zack is a champion. He recently led his youth
team to a fall/winter league championship at Del Rosa Lanes.
Coaches LEE FITZGERALD, BOBBY LYONS and TERRY
HODGSON are all raving about Zack.
Zack King just started bowling last fall after watching his
family compete at Del Rosa Lanes. He enjoys watching family and friends compete in leagues. He watches and learns. He
watches and gains experience. He watches and improves. Zack
is an exceptional young man.
Family. For Zack family comes first. That is why he has as
much fun watching his Mom bowl as much as he enjoys bowling
himself. That is why his favorite professional bowler is Parker
Bohn III. Parker is a family man and exhibits the qualities every
boy admires. He is cool, calm and collected.
Again, Zack is wise beyond his years. Grandfather DARWIN
BALDING has told us that Zack is the smartest person in the
family.
Zack’s favorite ball is his Strike King. He knows how to
HOOK IT. I have watched him rotate his hand around that ball
with an agility reserved for the young and athletic. Zack is both
and it is fun to watch his ball dance to his tune.
Master King told me he is grateful to his Mom, grandpa
and coaches for supporting him. My thanks to the BOWLING
NEWS for supporting Citrus Belt youth bowlers. Also I must
add that I am grateful for knowing Zack King and seeing BOWLING’S FUTURE.

PAULA VIDAD continued from page 1
sion with a clutch performance in the championship match where
she scored a 237-225 victory over USBC Hall-of-Famer and topseeded Tish Johnson of Colorado Springs.
Vidad was seeded second in the five-woman, stepladder finals. She reached the championship match with a convincing
246-216 victory over fifth-seeded Terri Ward of Loveland, Colo.,
who had won her first two stepladder matches and was threatening to “run the table.” From there, Vidad took on Johnson for the
$2,500 top prize. The two are familiar opponents, having faced
off “tons of times,” Vidad said. Vidad got off to a rocky start,
opening in the first frame after leaving the 4-9 split. Johnson,
meanwhile, rolled strikes in her first four frames and enjoyed an
89-59 cushion after three frames.
Vidad launched her comeback in the third frame, putting together five straight strikes that left her only 10 pins behind after
seven frames. She then slipped ahead after Johnson opened in
the ninth frame, missing a seven pin.Vidad, essentially, needed a
mark in the 10th frame to sew up the victory and she sealed the
win with a flourish, rolling a solid strike.
“I think it was one of my best shots,” Vidad said. “It was
flush. I was so excited. There was a lot of screaming because
I had done what I wanted to do. I was pretty much crying after
that – from the relief and stress – all at once.”
Coincidentally, Vidad had faced Johnson last year in the
championship match of the Senior Women’s U.S. Open. Vidad
won that match, 234-210.
The right-handed Vidad entered the stepladder finals with a
lot of momentum, having bowled a torrid 804 match-play series
(279-258-267) the day before.
Vidad holds the USBC record for most perfect games in a
tournament – three (in 28 games) that she bowled in the 1998
Western Women’s Professional Bowlers tournament. Still, Vidad
believes she’s bowling better now that she ever has in her life.
“It’s crazy,” Vidad said, “but it seems like my game has gotten
better over the years.”
Vidad’s powerful bowling did not go unnoticed by the Golden
Ladies talent-laden field, which included 122 bowlers.
“Paula is a tough competitor on the lanes and a great friend
and promoter of everything bowling off the lanes,” said Jackie
Wycoff of Campbell, Calif., who finished 22nd in the tournament.
“Even though she started the [championship] match with a
nasty split, she never gave up. By keeping it close, she was able
to come back and win the match.”
Other top California finishers included Pam Pancoast of Lomita (fourth), Sharon Aronson of Turlock (11th), Debbie Ayers
of San Diego (12th), Robin Romeo of Newhall (14th), Regina
Aboud of San Jose (17th) and Vesma Grinfelds of San Francisco
(18th).
Pancoast, seeded third, was ousted in Game 2 of the stepladder finals by Ward, 215-202. Ward opened the stepladder competition by squeaking past Lucy Sandelin of Tampa, Fla., 202-199.
Johnson earned $1,300 for her second-place finish. Ward won
$900, Pancoast picked up $800 and Sandelin earned $700.

BOWLING NEWS

by Steve Felege
HELLO TO BOWLING: Part IV
Bowling balls are not thrown; they’re delivered. What’s the difference? Throwing is an undisciplined action that creates random,
unreliable results (low scores). Delivery is a series of precise, well-defined steps creating repetitious, reliable performances (high
scores). Skills are the recipe to the latter and it’s time to learn them. They produce the accuracy you want and need.
Lesson #3: Luck occurs when preparation meets opportunity.
If you ask:
Bowling and practice are two different things. Bowling involves keeping score; it measures how successfully you’ve practiced.
“Practiced what?” The skills you are about to learn. Practice them, master them, trust them. They will make you a winner (your bowlWhy can’t I ever beat him/her?
ing scores will prove that). Without them I can only wish you a lot of luck because, well, you’ll need it.
The first skill is the “stance”.....but you’re not ready to learn it yet. Before you start learning technique, there are some preliminaries
to address. First you need to find a ball that fits you. The racks have plenty to choose from. You’re a beginner, so you should start with
What does he/she know that I don’t?
a conventional grip.
You’ve chosen the right ball if you can (A) insert your two middle fingers to the second knuckle, (B) the span (finger-holes to

thumbhole) matches yours, and (C) you can insert your thumb completely into the thumbhole. Make sure that the thumbhole isn’t too
loose (ball will fall off your hand) or too tight (ball won’t come off your hand and could cause other problems). Swing the ball a few

times to ensure you can handle it. The heavier the ball is, the better it will serve you.
Next, you’ll need a pair of bowling shoes (street shoes are forbidden). You want them to fit like the thumbhole; not too loose or too
Kindle or hardcopy available at amazon.com,
tight. By the way, clothing should be comfortable and loose. You need freedom of movement to bowl effectively. Let’s get started.
As stated, the first skill is THE STANCE. It’s the most important because it aims your shot and sets up your delivery. There are a
bazillion ways to stand with a bowling ball, but the best way is this:
and all other online book retailers.
- Place your feet exactly at the starting point previously determined. Stand erect.
- Keep your feet close together with the left foot back a bit. Put your weight on the right foot. Order yours today!
- Take a deep breath and put your hand in the ball (fingers in first, then the thumb).
- Face the second target-arrow from the gutter. Don’t take your eyes off that arrow!
- Dip your delivery-shoulder straight down as far as it will go. Don’t force it down.
- Rotate your wrist so that your hand is directly under the ball.
- Anchor your elbow tightly to your side.
- Point your forearm straight at the second arrow.
Doing this properly creates a posture which lines up the center of the ball, your shoulder and dominant eye (this alignment must be maintained throughout your delivery). You should be able to
swing the ball freely without it touching you. If it does, lean toward the ball a bit to create more space between the hips and your arm-swing. The ball should be held waist-high or lower and be supported by both hands. You and the ball are now aimed at that second arrow.
Of course this feels awkward. Daily practice for a minute or two in front of a full-length mirror (at home) quickly overcomes this. You will have mastered this skill when you can say to yourself,
“STANCE!” and snap into it with your eyes closed. Also, when nobody is looking, practice walking with this posture. That will serve you well.
The second skill is THE PUSH-AWAY which is incredibly important because it tells the ball where to go. It also influences the speed and timing of your shot. It consists of (literally) pushing the
ball toward the second arrow.
It begins with the elbow separating from your side and ends when the elbow is completely straightened. Done properly, you move the ball deliberately (not aggressively) in a straight line toward
your target. It must not go upward, sideway or straight down. It’s the easiest skill to master (a minute or two in front of a mirror), but also the easiest to forget. Practice giving this command to yourself, “PUSH-AWAY!” then perform the skill itself. Pushing the ball away until your arm is completely straightened must become a habit.
The third skill is THE ARM-SWING. It develops the speed and direction of your shot. Done properly the arm swings freely in the direction of the second arrow. It’s the hardest skill to master
because the ball is heavy and you instinctively want to throw it as hard as you can.
It’s actually very easy to tame this monster once you believe what I’ve already explained; that power isn’t necessary, accuracy is. Trying to develop excessive speed destroys your accuracy. Remember, the pins fall very easily, but you have to hit them!
Here’s a tip that will improve your arm-swing ability. Stand in front of a full-length mirror with a weight in your hand. A bowling ball would be ideal, but it can be a soup or pop can, a dumbbell or
any weighted object you can handle. Pick a target on the floor in the reflection and face it. Get into your “stance” posture and begin swinging the weight straight toward it (No, don’t let go of it!). Now
close your eyes and keep swinging. Keep swinging as you open your eyes. Is the weight still swinging directly at the target? Keep practicing until it does.
While your eyes are closed focus on what the swinging motion feels like. That’s what you need to learn. When bowling, you can’t see your arm-swing. This sense of feel is what you will rely on.
You also need to increase your hand strength. Nothing destroys an effective arm-swing faster than losing your grip on the ball. Here are some suggestions for strengthening your grip:
1. Get a rubber ball and squeeze it for a few minutes several times a day.
2. At the bowling center, find a ball on the racks heavier than the one you choose to use regularly. Pick it up and swing it a few times before bowling. This will make your ball feel lighter.
3. Hang from a tree or do pull-ups in a gym.
4. Do the “Indian Death Grip” with your friends. Instead of shaking hands with them, just clasp your hands together and squeeze until one of you cries “Uncle!” (I told you practice should be fun!)
WP
Western Pacific Bowling Supply, Inc.
The fourth skill is THE RELEASE. It sends the ball on its way. To release the ball properly, the wrist must be positioned correctly. The thumb should be on top of the ball and the fingers should
be behind it. Then it’s just a matter of releasing the pressure the thumb exerts on the ball. The thumb will come out first, followed by the ball rolling off your fingers heading merrily toward the second
arrow. That sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? It is............. if you have confidence. Remember confidence comes from competence and that results from practice.
- Practice your stance because it will aim your shot at the target.
- Practice your push-away because it will move your ball toward the target.
- Practice your arm-swing because it will add ball speed.
- Practice keeping your wrist in position so all you have to do is let the ball go.
- Be creative looking for different ways to practice these skills. Have fun with it!
Those are the four very basic bowling skills needed for you to become a competent bowler. As stated earlier, you need to practice, master and trust them. If you do, you won’t need to rely on luck!
One lesson to go! See you next week.

LAS VEGAS — A few Marines returned from the annual Military Tournament in Las Vegas a little bit beat up
and burned out from the beating that we took from the Air
Force. However, we were just in time to take a shot at the
title of the 2015 Annual Orange County Tournament Championship. This event was organized by USBC and hosted at
Fountain Bowl in Orange County.
We bowled the Team event on the 22nd of February
and the Singles and Doubles on the 1st of March. Our
team name was “That’s How We Roll”. As Marines first to
fight is what we are known for. It was a four man team
format, which consisted of three Marines and the son of
a Marine. The Dad, Lanny Ross pumped us up and came
out of the gate with a blazzing 298 to set the tone for the
rest of the team. He finished his series with a 786. His son,
Branson Ross our anchor bowler had a high game of 255,
finishing his series with a 735. Roy Coleman the lead off
bowler shot a 786 series and James Mabus shot a 729 series which launched us into 1st place, with a score of 3039,
where we remained for the rest of the tournament.

BOB JONES LED DEAF TRAVEL AGAIN
WITH 874 AT GABLE HOUSE BOWL
TORRANCE — In its 2nd round stop at Gable House Bowl,
Southern California Deaf Traveling League tried to do better than
its first stop there last November but came up short. Mainly Bob
Jones who on that November first stop there rolled a 906 series,
came up short this time with a 874 to lead the day’s honor roll
again. The lefty had had too many 7 pins taps between strikes in
his all twos-four games of 236-213-211-214 that prevented from
scoring higher.
Following Jones on the roll list was his opponent Dan Flores
who had a poor first two games (180-159) start before finishing
with the day’s high game of 246 and 205 for a 790 series. After
Flores were Ed Abakumoff with 162-202-204-214 for 780 and
his opponent Gorman Low with 158-183-231-207 for 779. Also
making the list were 91 years young Connie Marchione with
(209)710 and Robert Audette with (217)705. Celia Salcedo was
the high lady with both game and series (190)652.
The surprise of the day was league leader Flores’ Orange
County being upset with a near sweep 17-3 loss by cellar-dwelling Jones’ S F Valley. That moved S F Valley out of the bottom
as 3rd place Low’s Hollywood made a near sweep 15-5 win over
Abakumoff’s Riverside putting Riverside into the cellar. The other team action was 4th place Mid City making an upsetting 13-7
loss on 2nd place Audette’s Eagle Rock that provides the first 3
places closer within 6.5 points.
The 55 yeas old deaf traveling league appreciates Gable
House management and staff for hosting with good scoring conditioning. Next on schedule is April 13 at Winnetka Bowl with
bowling at Noon and fate setting the exciting match action as like
a position round.

guards for our team. It was time for the two elders of the
group to take charge and be in the forefront of the action.
65-year old team Captain Master Sargeant Roy Coleman
and his Desert Storm comrad, 52-year old James Mabus
had a shoot out among themselves.
In the first game of the Doubles, Roy shoots 245 only
to get beat by his partner with a 247. The 2nd game Roy
shoots 264 only to get beat again with a score of 267. Finally the 3rd game he came through and beat his partner
198 to 184. Together with their collective efforts and can
do attitude, they were able to launch themselves into 1st
place for the Doubles with a score of 1607 with handicap
and have fun too.
Roy also came in 5th and 6th place in All-Events with a
total score of 2365 for this tournament.
When the team captain was asked how did they stay
focused for the entire tournament, he replied, “We found a
way to push ourselves. We adapted, we adjusted and we
motivated each other to over come all of the obstacles that
stood in our way.” As Marines we have been taught to take
care of our own.

PBA Leauge continued from page 1
“I thought that shot would be flush in the pocket,” Weber said
of the 7 pin he left in the roll-off, “but it just kept going.”
In the second match, the Bass Pro Shops Silver Lake Atom
Splitters couldn’t put two strikes back-to-back, but they bowled
an otherwise flawless game to win the first game, 192-179. The
key to the win was Mika Koivuniemi’s rare 2-8-10 split conversion which energized his team, and proved especially important
when the High 5 Gear Philadelphia Hitmen caught fire, running
away to a 265-205 win in game two to force the roll-off.
The defending Elias Cup champion Atom Splitters moved on
to the semifinal round when Hitmen anchor Rhino Page left the
4-7 on his first shot, and Atom Splitters’ anchor Dick Allen left
only a 10 pin for the 9-8 win.
“I make the 2-8-10 a few times a year,” Koivuniemi said of
his pivotal shot, “but I’ve never made it on TV. I was trying to
make it by throwing the 2 pin into the 10 and hoping it would
bounce across. That’s what happened, but it’s always lucky to
make it. It kind of took (the Hitmen’s) hopes away.”
The atmosphere in Maine was unique, with fans cheered
loudly and music blaring in the background throughout the competition, and the players loved the high level of enthusiasm.
“It was electrifying to the max,” Bohn said. “We used to bowl
in an arena in Erie, Pennsylvania with 4,000 noisy fans, but that
was nothing compared to this. I think the people in Erie could
hear the fans in Maine.”
“It was really fun,” Weber added. “I’ve never seen anything
like it. Never.”
The third and fourth quarterfinal matches in the PBA League
series will air next Sunday on ESPN at 3:30 p.m. ET when the
HotelPlanner.com Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits, led by former PBA
Player of the Year Wes Malott, meet the Shipyard Brewery Dallas Strikers, led by player-manager and PBA Hall of Famer
Norm Duke. The fourth quarterfinal match is between Detroit’s
Barbasol Motown Muscle, led by 2013 PBA Rookie of the Year
EJ Tackett, vs. Wheaties L.A. X, led by two-time reigning PBA
Player of the Year Jason Belmonte.
The four quarterfinal round winners will advance to the semifinal round on ESPN on Sunday, April 12, at 2 p.m. ET. The
semifinal round winners will bowl for the Elias Cup in a single,
doubles, trios and Baker team finale on Sunday, April 19, at 1
p.m. ET.

BURBANK — As you all know, I have declared myself
addicted to bowling. My dedication, interest and efforts for
bowling are always in the back of my mind and thoughts.
This causes me, all too often, to assume all bowlers feel
likewise. Not so, Grasshopper. Apparently, there are many
kinds of ‘bowler attitudes’.
Many years ago, my hubby had a brief conversation
with another bowler about the sport. This guy was obviously distraught having come to the conclusion that bowling was now the only sport he could play. His exact words
were “Yeah, bowling is what is left when you can no longer
do anything else.” Excuse me?
His point was that he really preferred to be playing
baseball, or maybe it was basketball, and now was unable
because he had become permanently injured. But he could
bowl. I’ve heard this tale of woe before from my own hubby.
He is, and will always be, a hockey player before anything
else. A torn hamstring took him off the ice and pulled him
onto the lanes with me.
This attitude blows my mind. It says to me these people
don’t think of bowling as a real sport. A sport that requires
skill! They don’t see the beauty in watching a skilled bowler
roll a perfect shot and look good while doing it! Nor do they
account for the ability needed to place a ball perfectly 12
times for a 300 game. For me, watching a seasoned bowler
is like watching ballet...poetry in motion.
Have you thought about your ‘bowler attitude’? Do you
eagerly anticipate bowling day or do you dread it? Do you
see your lesser scores as a chance to improve or wallow
in them only to talk about what a great pitcher you were
in your day? Do you find joy in your fellow bowlers high
scores or shy away from the high five they deserve? Think
about it. Attitude adjustments have often led to greater expertise and a helluva lot more fun!

The Professional Approach Moves To The Top Alone at 9-1 TOP 10 TEAMS ROUND 5
by Randy Myers
DOWNEY — It may not have been pretty, but it was effective Monday night as The Professional Approach pulled
out a 4-1 over DV8, winning Team Totals by a mere 2 pins!!
The defending champs were down by 75 pins entering game
3, but came storming back to win and move to 9-1 for the
round. Billy Myers Jr. led his team with 608, while DV8 had
all four bowlers shoot between 538-543. Next up for The
Professional Approach will be Threadworks, who were to
top scoring team on the night, shooting 2427 to defeat Pino’s
Pizza 4-1. Paul Varela 275/700, Eric Snow 265/627, and
Butch Jackson 625 scored big for the winners while Leonard
Ruiz Jr. led Pino’s with 641. Blizz Yogurt whitewashed Alhambra Coin Center 5-0 to also move to 8-2, just one game
behind the leaders. Greg Neuer shot 596 to lead Blizz, while
Doug Kempt shot 542 for the Coin Center. Linder Insurance
moved to 6-4 with a 5-0 sweep of Cook’s Bowling Supply spearheaded by the awesome bowling of Michelle Tran
269/663 and Anthony Santos 258/623. Power House Video
Games is also sitting at 6-4 after taking 4 of 5 from J.A.T.
The video games group was Powered by Eddie VanDaniker
278/697 and Lee Liu 608, while Larry Campbell shot 631
for J.A.T.
Tifco Industries somehow managed to go 3-2 for the
second week in a row and are also at 6-4, just 3 back from
the round lead. Tifco used a huge Game 3 to move around
Herzog Insurance for Team Totals. Albert Chen was tops for
Tifco with 575, while Mikey Villarreal led Herzog and the
pair with 604. In the night’s most “spirited” match, it was
CASAMIGO’s Tequila evening their record at 5-5 as they
swept away American Harvest Vodka. Joe Jimenez led all
bowlers this night with 264/703, getting help from anchor-
man Vernon Adams 601, while American Harvest was paced
by Kevin Jones 613. Los Altos Trophies got two strong efforts as Buddy Lucas and Jonathan Huezo shot 624 & 611
respectively to lead their team to a 4-1 win over GJC Services, who were paced by Joey Hanna 568. Bowlium bowled
very well, getting strong performances from James Tipton
629 and Christopher Sutton 621 but only managed to pull out
1 win. In the round winners matchups it was Keystone Lanes
outlasting Erickson Foods to win 4-1 as both teams struggled
down the stretch. Charles Zelaya 628 and Herbert Jones 616
led Keystone, while Bobby Campagnale 631 & Sol Cericos
605 were doing the striking for Erickson. The last match was
very close as SYSCO managed to pull out a 3-2 sin by winning Team Totals by 8 pins. Gabriel Martinez was once again
top gun for SYSCO with 589, Jon Diso bowled a very consistent 581 to lead Forest Lanes.
Sidepot winners were Game 1 – Eric Snow 265, Game 2
–Eddie VanDaniker 278, good for both 2nd Game and 1st in
Financial Advisor’s pot. Joe Jimenez got 2nd for $100 with
264. Game 3 Super Pot went to Paul Varela with 275.The
TRUE ANCHOR award goes to Ricardo Baca with 469, as
he was low “man”. Debbie Abahazy struggled to 414, followed closely by 3 other ladies…
Two weeks are gone, only six more to determine our last
two roll-off teams. Scores will be considerably higher next
Monday as we move to the house shot. If you’re a fan of
strikes and honor scores, you may want to take in the action
live at Del Rio next Monday. I am planning on make an appearance the day after Easter so come down to Del Rio Lanes
in Downey and see it all for yourself! Have a blessed week
everyone!
