What’s Brewing Winter Edition 2014 Merry Christmas by Bill Smith, III Merry Christmas!! This year, Will, Edie, Sarah, Emmie, and I will celebrate the Christmas season in a far different way than we have for many years. We will set aside our traditions, pack the warm clothes we can find, and catch up with our extended Smith family across "The Pond" as some people say. I am certain that our trip will be a rugged excursion at times and one with many fun memories. And, I hope we all return in one piece and without bumps and bruises too! So, we have thrown a few wrinkles into our Christmas this year... We will not have a Christmas tree at our home. We will not smell biscotti baking in our kitchen. We will not race around Birmingham at the last hour picking up the last recipe ingredients or the last presents for one another. We will not be at our home church on Christmas Eve. We will not wake up at our home on Christmas morning, wondering what Santa may have done during the night in the downstairs living room. Yet, Christmas will come anyway and will be there for us to enjoy and embrace! My mother once remarked that Christmas is not one day or one place but a special present that goes with us wherever we are. (If you see my mother, please let her know that we do listen sometimes.) I suppose we all know that to be true and yet sometimes we need a little extra effort to pull off Christmas the way we want it to be. We want to show hospitality to and with everybody. Hatton does hospitality better than most everybody I know so it's fun to join in with his enthusiasm and merriment. Thank you Hatton! We give and receive our best wishes and presents during this season. My brother Jim is always good to be there with a kind heart and an open interest in how you're doing. Thank you Jim! I am very thankful to all of you who share your Christmas joy with us each day. When traditions get set aside temporarily, I appreciate what you do and how you lead us with the Christmas spirit! I also am thankful Christmas comes every year and reminds each of us of Hope, Joy, Peace, and the Christ child, Jesus. I wish God's blessings for each of you this Christmas season, this holiday season, and this winter season! Sensational Service John Wainer and Howard Newell serving great coffee at the recent MUFSO Conference in Dallas, Texas. We are proud to say our own Maurice Carrington, CSD Marketing Manager, participated in the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Birmingham where thousands lined the streets to honor veterans. Outside of the corporate office, Becky Smith from Royal Cup Coffee and Greg Rollings from Waffle House, served coffee from the new Royal Cup Mobile Cafe! 2 Winter Wonderland at the McWane Center On December 12, Royal Cup employees and their families celebrated the holidays at the McWane Science Center. This event included a special viewing of The Polar Express movie in the IMAX Theater. Attendees also had access to the Winter Wonderland where they enjoyed ice fishing, a fun zip line, a train ride, giant foam building blocks, and everyone’s favorite, hot chocolate and cookies! 3 Royal Cup Christmas Luncheon The annual Royal Cup Christmas Luncheon was held on December 12 at the Gardendale Community Center. It was a wonderful event which included a delicious holiday lunch and entertainment provided by Gardendale High School Chamber Choir. Congratulations to Gena Hyatt and her incredible team for making this a most enjoyable celebration. Enjoy these two pages of some happy attendees. This is the story of a couple who has taken a tradition and are now using it to heal both their lives and help others. Since 2006, Elliot and Lauren Blue have organized annual gingerbread-decorating parties, raising $75,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphona Society. On Sunday, December 14, they held the 10th annual event at High Caliber Stables in Greensboro where approximately 150 people showed up for the morning event while the afternoon event hosted close to 170 people. Participants donated at least $35 per gingerbread house to decorate. Individuals and families were welcome. The goal: raise $6,000. Elliot lost his first wife in 2003 after a fiveyear battle with leukemia and Lauren's Greensboro Territory Manager Elliot Blue, daughter Kennedy Blue, and wife Lauren Blue father died in 2009. Elliot and Lauren met at a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society event, but the idea to hold a gingerbread decorating fundraiser didn't come until later. Family and friends got together in 2004 to decorate gingerbread houses. The gingerbread party was a hit, and everyone was talking about it for months afterward. The very next week, people who had not attended began asking to be invited the next year. This got the couple thinking about the possibility of turning the fun into an event to help others, and in 2006 they held their first decorating fundraiser. Word spread and it became necessary to find a bigger venue, and in 2013 the Blue’s held the party outside their home for the first time. People gathered inside a large, white tent where tables were set up with gingerbread houses and places were assigned. A large table in the center contained the goods: 150 to 200 pounds of candy. There were Red Hots, chocolate chips, M&M's, pretzel sticks, candy canes, peppermints and other treats. Then it was time to build. Children and parents loaded plates, occasionally popping a treat in their mouth, before heading to their gingerbread houses. Parents were often ordered by their children to return to the center table for more "supplies." Memories were being made. One of Elliot’s fondest memories growing up was getting together with other children at a family friend's home to decorate gingerbread houses during the holidays. "I was the oldest of the kids, and later on I'd come home from college just to do the houses," Elliot said. Eventually, the friend passed the torch to Elliot, giving him a gingerbread-making kit and her recipe. At the first fundraiser in 2006, the Blues baked about 20 houses. This year, they baked 170, no two looking exactly the same. When asked about the event, Elliot said, "There's so many distractions during the holidays, but when people come to these gingerbread decorating parties, it's a time for them to get away from all that, spend time together as a family and help raise money for a very important cause." The goal for this year was surpassed and the Gingerbread Project raised $7,000.00! This is a friendly bet put on by Waffle House suppliers and this year they selected the Auburn University vs. University of Georgia football game. So what exactly is the Waffle Wager? The wager is simple: if the Tigers won, C.H. Guenther and Basic American Foods would provide waffles, hashbrowns and coffee to an Auburn, AL Waffle House location for an entire day. If the Dawgs won, Royal Cup would provide the same thing to a Waffle House location in Athens, GA. This year the University of Georgia’s football win over Auburn paid dividends in Athens on Wednesday November 19, in the form of free waffles, hashbrowns, and coffee all day. Waffle House and their suppliers, Basic American Foods, C.H. Guenther & Sons, Inc. and Royal Cup Coffee and Tea, partnered again this year for the second annual Waffle Wager. The Waffle Wager started last year when Royal Cup and C.H. Guenther initiated a friendly bet on the Alabama vs. Bill Smith, Jr. serving coffee to Mike Toti (C. H. Guenther) Texas A&M game. Alabama's 49-42 victory resulted in and Mike Villano (Basic American Foods) nearly 2,000 free waffles and 1,500 free cups of coffee at the Waffle House on University Boulevard in Tuscaloosa. In each of the past two college football seasons, one major NCAA football game has been chosen for the Waffle Wager. The college town with the winning team gets 24 hours of free waffles, hash browns and coffee from a local Waffle House. The winning university's general scholarship fund also receives $15,000 to help further the education of its students. News that the UGA-Auburn game had been chosen for the Waffle Wager hit social media late last week, but few details were given as to which local Waffle House would be participating or when the free giveaway would take place. When details were released Monday morning, Twitter lit up with the hashtag “#wafflewager” and the news spread like wildfire. Most of the diners said they saw the news online. Dozens of UGA students and other people gathered in the cold at the downtown Waffle House bright and early Wednesday to get a free waffle breakfast. The line of hungry customers stretched up Clayton Street before 7 a.m., when the free waffle handout began, surprising the corporate sponsors who showed up in support of the big event. “I couldn’t believe people were here so early,” exclaimed Michael Villano, Vice President of food service at Basic American Foods. In addition to free food, a $15,000 donation was made to the University of Georgia’s General Scholarship Fund as a result of the Bulldogs 34-7 victory over Auburn. 8 Congratulations The Alabama Restaurant and Hospitality Alliance held its annual Stars of the Industry dinner in Auburn, Alabama in late October. Mike Powell, Regional Manager for the FSD Central Region, was voted one of the finalists and won Supplier of the Year. When asked about his award Mike replied, “This is a great honor for our Company, and I am proud to contribute to Royal Cup's long tradition of industry involvement. My name is now on the trophy next to the following Royal Cup family members; Don Evans '73, Charlie Gibbs '82, "Mickey" Smith '91, Bob Reed '02, and Don Gann '09.” We agree with Mike. It is a great honor for him as well as for Royal Cup. Mike is in some elite company with such a great list of past winners. Congratulations Mike! Bruce Bria, Quality Control Manager, returned recently to Royal Cup after a week in California where he participated in an exhausting series of tests to become a "Licensed Q Grader". This is a program of the Coffee Quality Institute, an organization affiliated with the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Bruce passed all the tests with flying colors and is now a "Licensed Q Grader". This is another example of Bruce's dedication to Royal Cup and his desire to continue his professional development. Congratulations Bruce on this great achievement! They provide a safe place to stay, clean clothes and hot meals. When women arrive at Pathways, it is often with only a few articles of clothing and even fewer personal possessions. Pathways also supplies training and education programs to help both women and children transition back into the community. In short, Pathways is A Woman's Way Home. Through fundraisers like Front Door Parking, Blue Jean Day, Hot Dog Cookout and our Bake Sale, along with all of the generous donations from Royal Cup employees of gently used clothing, toiletries, hats, scarves, gloves, coffee, kitchen supplies and, of course monetary donations, Royal Cup was able to provide Pathways many items needed for basic daily living.
