Travel through time from Stone Age to the industrial age and discover three key
heritage sites of Western Germany: the famous Neanderthal valley, Cologne Cathedral and Zollverein Coal Mine Essen. The tour leads you to three destinations whose
histories intersect in surprising ways. For centuries, holy bones such as those of the
Three Wise Men that now rest at the Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
and Germany`s most visited landmark, were meaningful for the question of the origin
of mankind. With the discovery of Neanderthal man, the world-famous icon of the Ice
Age, our understanding from the beginning of our history changed fundamentally.
These bones came to light only because of limestone quarrying undertaken in the
Neander Valley. The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, another UNESCO World
Heritage sites attracting more than 1.5 million visitors per year, tells the story of the
industrial age at Rhine-Ruhr, one of the most vibrant regions of Europe.
