Navy Launches Career Guide
The Navy dive community now has a roadmap to help enlisted Sailors succeed in their careers
with the launch of a new career tool available on Navy Knowledge Online (NKO). The
Learning and Development Roadmaps (LaDR - pronounced ladder) are being developed by
the staffs at the learning centers charged with providing career learning and development for
each Navy rating. The diver roadmap was developed by the staff at the Center for Explosive
Ordnance Disposal and Diving in Panama City, Fla. The goal is to have LaDRs for all ratings
on NKO by April 2010.

Whole wheat pasta experiment.
I don't eat pasta very often--almost never. I honestly can't remember the last time I had it before this month. The reason
being that the amount I need to eat in order to fill me up is
much more than any one person should consume in a single
sitting. So, this month's pasta recipe was kind of an experiment
for me. I wanted to try whole wheat pasta because, in addition
to being much better for you, it's also supposed to fill you up
faster. But would it?
The answer to that question? Yes! It totally filled me up. And I
didn't crave a whole other meal an hour later (like your typical
carb-loaded pasta dish)--even though I'd gone for a 5-mile run
that night, which normally would leave me ravenous. I think a
serving of whole wheat pasta will now be my new post-run
meal of choice. Why is whole wheat pasta better for you? It
contains nearly three times the fiber of regular pasta, which is
why it fills you up faster (not to mention it lowers your risk of
heart disease and diabetes).

Stowing/Servicing of Vehicles
Per base regulations and HomePort Hampton Roads (HHR) policy Boats, Jet
Ski’s, ATV’s, and RV’s cannot be stowed in parking lots or HHR garages. Any
type of automobile maintenance or repair is prohibited on any HHR property. In
your resident handbook are phone numbers to the MWR storage facilities. Please
stow your recreational vehicles there. Towed vehicles will be at owner’s expense.
A tad tipsy? Free ride is at service members' service
Ladies and gentlemen, do not start your engines. If you've been drinking, and you're in the military, you can take a free
cab instead. This comes thanks to the designated-driver campaign "Safe Rides Home," which officially kicked off a local
program Thursday morning at Hot Tuna Bar & Grill. The pilot program provides free taxi rides from local nightspots to
service members' homes or military bases within 30 miles. All they have to do is tell a manager they need a ride. The
campaign is in place at six locations: Hot Tuna, Peabody's and Shorebreak in Virginia Beach and Baxter's, Time and
Greenies in Norfolk. The cabs are from Black & White Cabs and Norview Cabs. The program is sponsored by beverage
company Diageo and by Southern Wine & Spirits, which had representatives on hand Thursday along with officials from
the state departments of alcoholic beverage control, transportation and motor vehicles.
In Virginia, 821 people died on state roads in 2008, and 42 percent of those deaths were alcohol-related, said John
Saunders, director of DMV's highway safety office. So a program like "Safe Rides" is a very welcome thing. The program began unofficially over the holidays. Barry Becton of Diageo said they will monitor it to get the bugs worked out in
the coming months. The plan is to expand to other nightspots. "We just want to make sure we keep the roads safe," he
said. Shorebreak's Matthew Falvey said he's a big fan of the program. His customers often hesitate to take cabs on their
own because they are scarce and expensive. "Now, hey, it's free," he said, and the program makes sure the drivers get
a piece of the action as well. Also, the cabs have base access, said ABC's Becky Gettings. That means a sailor won't
get dropped off at the gate of Norfolk Naval Station and have to walk to his or her ship.

NCPDUP Education Fair
Local Navy College Offices will host Education
Fairs as noted below to accent the Navy College
Program Distance Learning Partnership
(NCPDLP).
Participating schools are selected by the Navy to
offer rate-relevant associate and baccalaureate
degrees via distance learning, and they maximize
acceptance of military professional training as
recommended on the SMART transcript. A variety of college and university representatives will
be in attendance to offer information to interested
students. In addition to the NCPDLP institutions,
the local on base colleges and universities (who
have an MOU to offer programs on the base) will
be available at the Education Fairs. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to shop for a degree program that meets your academic needs and
goals. Other educational organizations such as
the Navy College Learning Center (NCLC), Education Opportunity Center (EOC) (provides financial aid information), USMAP (Navy's apprenticeship program), and the Veteran's Affairs (VA)
department will be available to assist you. This
event is free and open to ALL PERSONNEL with
base access.
