The Experience
Surrounded by thousands of square miles of pristine terra firma, Amangiri is the ideal
luxury base camp to discover the magic of the Colorado Plateau. Amangiri guests
enjoy exclusive opportunities to explore, and learn about, the surrounding region
in numerous unique ways. Your experience may include hikes, climbs, scenic flights,
boating tours, rafting tours, off-road excursions, educational trips, or any combination
thereof. Your time with us can easily be tailored to suit your interests and ability level.
Private Scenic Flight opportunities offer an aerial perspective of the stunning canyons
and mesas that the Colorado Plateau is known for. You will have the option of
departing directly from the Amangiri helipad or flying in a fixed wing aircraft from
the Page Arizona airport (approx. 30 minutes from the resort). Scenic flights may be
combined with ground tours of nearby National Parks, providing you with two distinct
perspectives on these magnificent natural wonders.
Boating and Rafting excursions include tours of the Colorado River and Lake Powell.
Amangiri guests have exclusive access to a variety of private tours that have been
custom designed with the discerning traveler in mind.
Hiking, Climbing and Canyoneering opportunities range from short self-guided hikes
on any of the six Amangiri trails to expanding your horizons by climbing one of our Via
Ferrata routes (fixed climbing routes) with an Adventure Partners guide. Off-property
hiking excursions include nearby National Parks and a wide array of backcountry
exploration options.
We encourage guests to make reservations for activities in advance as some activities
require pre-booking. The Amangiri Activities Team is available to provide you with
more details on any of our tour options, or to assist you with creating a custom
itinerary for your party.

Minimal Impact Ethics
Amangiri is fortunate enough to call the Colorado Plateau home. With majestic views
of the stunning landscape that surrounds the resort, we have developed a great
appreciation for the area; how it was formed; and what it has become today. This
appreciation fosters a desire to preserve the area so you can experience it as we have,
in an unaltered pristine state. Please keep in mind that visitors to seldom used places
require an extra commitment to travel quietly and lightly on the land.
Cultural artifacts are protected by the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
It is illegal to remove or disturb archeological sites, historic sites, or artifacts such as pot
shards, arrowheads, structures, and even antique bottles found on public lands.
It is illegal to carve your name into any rocks on, or off, Amangiri property.
Enjoy and learn from historical and archeological sites, but respect these sites and treasures. Some of these are sacred to Native
Americans, or are important cultural reminders of pioneer heritage.
Natural objects of beauty or interest such as antlers, petrified wood and colored rocks add to the mood of the backcountry and
should be left so others can experience a sense of discovery.
Quick movements and loud noises are stressful to animals. Travel quietly and do
not pursue, feed or force animals to flee. Do not touch, get close to, feed or pick up
wild animals.
We ask that you enjoy your time with us in Canyon Country and help us to share
this inspiring experience with those who follow you. Please tread lightly and
enjoy the journey. Thank you for joining us in our effort to protect this fragile
environment.

How to Get Here
Amangiri has a number of private aircraft charter partners including Redtail Aviation..
The best way to arrive and depart Amangiri is through the magic of a scenic flight. Redtail Aviation has Quest Kodiak charter
services available from all major local municipalities, and through the connection point of the St. George, Utah Airport.
A chosen option for arriving to, or departing from, Amangiri is to fly on a commercial flight to the St. George Utah Airport (SGU),
connect to a private Redtail flight, and less than one hour after you deplane from your commercial flight you will be on the front
steps of Amangiri.
Delta Airlines and United Airlines fly regularly scheduled flights into the St. George airport. The current flight schedule can be
explored at this link:
http://www.flysgu.com/
5
Upon landing at the St. George Airport a representative
will meet you and escort you to the Kodiak. Within a few
minutes of deplaning your commercial flight you can be with
your Redtail pilot and on your way to Amangiri.
Nothing could be simpler than a casual stroll across the
tarmac in St. George to your Redtail flight.
Redtail Avaition is a trusted local air service provider that
Amangiri has granted permission to land directly on our
property where an Amangiri representative will greet you
and escort you to the front steps of the resort.

Summertime at Amangiri is inspiring, spectacular and
unlike any other place in the world, according to Amangiri Activities
Director, Jade McBride.
This is a land of unsurpassed, surprising beauty, characterized by
powerful landscapes and rock formations. You’ll want to plan some extra
time in this place with your family this summer.
McBride recommends his “High Five” of family activities for your
summer vacation at Amangiri.
#1 Set out on an adventure on Lake Powell. With almost 2,000 miles
of shoreline, pristine water, over 90 picturesque side canyons and
secluded bays with sandy beaches there’s something for every member
of the family. The perfect day may include some watersports, kayaking or
even spending some time on a Stand Up Paddle Board.
The Inside Story: The “High Five” Family Activities
7
#2 Every mom and dad will become a hero when the
8
family experiences a Colorado River Trip. Downstream
of Glen Canyon Dam, the mighty Colorado River flows
towards the Grand Canyon through towering 1000foot (300-meter) high walls of Navajo Sandstone. The
peaceful stretch of river is perfect for scenic float
trips. Your river trip is followed by an incredible
scenic helicopter flight with a landing on top of Tower
Butte. This Butte is a 700 foot tall free-standing tower
overlooking Lake Powell and the surrounding desert.
Once the helicopter has shut down you’ll have an
opportunity to get out and gaze at the view from the top
of the world. This is truly one of those experiences that is,
“Rock Star Cool!”
“High Five”
Family Activities
#3 Take the family for climb! With 6
9
different Via Ferreta climbing areas there’s
one that will fit your families size and
skill level. A Via Ferrata is a combination
scramble and technical climb using vertical
steel rungs attached to the sandstone
walls of the Mesas. No previous climbing
experience is required for these guided-only
ascents, but guests should be reasonably fit
and have some experience hiking. All guests
will be lead by an experienced guide and will
be wearing helmets and harnesses.
#4 After years of listening to the comments from hundreds of
guests I’m convinced that our, Horses and History dinner program has
the power to foster deeper relationships and inspire us to be better
people. In addition to experiencing a fantastic outdoor meal, families
travel to a private location called the Raven’s Nest via a 45-minute
horseback ride and upon arrival they are entertained by a Navajo
Elder, and traditional Native American dancers. The classic campfire
menu is sure to please and the evening is finished off by simply
spending time around the campfire, and building memories that will
last a lifetime.
All Amangiri activities are private and can be customized to create
the perfect set of experiences. In addition to the “High Five” we have
developed a collection of three hour, on-property programs, focusing
on the wonders of Utah’s high desert including, Desert Art Discovery,
earth painting, Amangiri Scavenger Hunts, searching for unique
plants, animals and tracks, Climb and Rappel, and Petroglyph and
Ancient Culture exploration, visiting the Broken Arrow Cave to see
evidence of human occupation dating back more than 6000 years.
Our Amangiri Activity team is here to help you through every step of
10 planning your family adventure.
#5 From the Jurassic to the Cretaceous periods, Amangiri is
surrounded by a region that is rich in dinosaur evidence and is
considered one of North America’s premier paleontology research
areas. Half day and full day tour options give you a chance to custom
build the perfect outing to fit your family. An easy three hours of
exploration allows guests to hunt for 90-million-year-old marine fossil
specimens. This tour includes a visit to the nearby Grand Staircase
Escalante National Monument’s Paleontology Center to learn more
about local dinosaur history. The full-day trips take guests out to
visit REAL fossil excavation sites where you can get your hands dirty
digging up dinosaur bones shoulder to shoulder with a paleontologist.
11
Private Air Tours
One of the best ways to comprehend the scale of the vast expanses of open terrain is from an aerial perspective.
Whether you choose to fly in a fixed wing aircraft or take to the skies on a helicopter tour, Amangiri offers several private air
tour options for your enjoyment. You will have the unique opportunity to fly privately with some of the best pilots in the region
who fly for local charter operators recognized for their excellent safety record and the specialized services.
A scenic flight may be combined with a ground tour by landing at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon; Bryce Canyon National
Park; or Monument Valley. This option is very popular with Amangiri guests, as it affords two sharply contrasting perspectives of
these magnificent landscapes.
Helicopter tours depart directly from the private Amangiri helipad, located on a slickrock outcropping nestled between
picturesque sandstone towers. Taking off and landing at Amangiri will provide you with a unique perspective of the open space
that surrounds the resort.
Fixed wing air tours depart from the airport in Page, Arizona which is approximately a thirty minute drive from the resort.
Please note that flights begin and end promptly and arrival at the Page Airport must be at least fifteen minutes prior to
scheduled flight departures.
Hot Air Balloon
Launching from Amangiri, hot air balloon flights provide guests with extraordinary views of the resort’s six hundred acres (two
hundred and forty two hectares) of spectacular scenery. Your launch will coincide with sunrise. Launch is subject to weather
and cancellations may occur. Due to this fact, we typically only schedule balloon flights in the cooler Fall and Winter months
when the balloon has the best chance of flying. Spring and summer flights are available upon special request. Please contact a
member of the Amangiri Activities Team to speak about the logistics of “off-season” flying.
Duration: Varies due to wind velocity and direction. A typical flight is approximately fifteen to thirty minutes in length.
Attire: Warm clothing, a warm hat, and winter gloves
12
Lake Powell Playhouse
Get up close and personal with the actors as they perform this classic musical in and around your
table in Amangiri’s authentic western Chinle Tent Site nestled tightly among the massive rock
formations of the Studhorse Mesa.
The Lake Powell Playhouse’s unique depiction of Heart of the West is a celebration of and
the spirit of living the western American life. After the Civil War the early settlers in America
expanded West in a quest of exploration and discovery, trekking directly through the land that
today hosts the Amangiri Resort.
Meet this cast of young adults living in a time when they felt anything was possible, and follow
them on their journey to explore new territories and discover of the magic of the place they call
home. In this western musical review, you’ll experience the spirit of adventure that grabs hold of
your heart and begs you to explore undiscovered territories. This once-in-a-lifetime experience
will also satisfy your taste for adventure with an authentic dutch oven dinner presented by
Amangiri’s kitchen. Grab a plate and treat yourself to the real flavor of the river with slow roasted
beef, cowboy potatoes, gourmet boatman beans, cornbread, and chocolate brownies, all cooked
dutch oven style.
Performances have limited seating and advanced reservations are recommended. Shows run
from May 25 - Oct. 1, Monday and Thursday nights. Times vary depending on sunset.

National Parks
The Colorado Plateau has the highest concentration of National Parks in the United States. Amangiri guests have two guide
service options for visiting three of the best known national parks: Grand Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park
and Zion National Park.
Your options for national park exploration include embarking on a private tour with an Adventure Partners guide, or spending
the day on a private tour with a guide from the Park Cooperating Associations.
Tours with the Park Cooperating Associations are the perfect complement to an air tour of the national parks. Park Cooperating
Associations, and their partners Park Field Institutes, are non-profit entities that were chartered by the U.S. Congress. Their
focus is to promote education and responsible stewardship of some of the most well known landscapes on the planet. Amangiri
donates a portion of your Field Institute tour costs directly to park’s Field Institute, in support of their valued mission. Guests
who would like to further support these efforts are encouraged to speak with their Field Institute guide or a member of the
Amangiri Activities Team.
Amangiri’s in-house guides, Adventure Partners, provide transportation to and from the local national parks and provide expert
guiding service within the parks. Their tours are unscripted and can easily be tailored to your interests and ability levels.
16
17
Grand Canyon National Park
South Rim Touring Options
Grand Canyon Field Institute: An ideal way to explore the South Rim is with the Grand Canyon Field Institute (GCFI). A GCFI
guide will lead you on a private six-hour tour, including transportation to and from the Grand Canyon Airport, as needed. The
tour is unscripted and can easily be tailored to suit your interests and hiking abilities. One of the most popular touring options
for Amangiri guests is to combine a Grand Canyon Scenic Flight, either via helicopter or fixed wing plane, with a ground tour
with the GCFI.
Amangiri Private Tour: Adventure Partners, our in-house guide service, provides private transportation from Amangiri to the
South Rim of The Grand Canyon, as well as a customized interpretive tour within the park. The two and a half hour drive to the
canyon is almost entirely on the Navajo Nation, through a stunning landscape of beautiful high desert splendor. Driving from
Amangiri enables you to enter the park through the less congested Desert View entrance station. Your tour inside the park will
begin with a stunning 23 mile (37 kilometer) drive along the East Rim Drive.
North Rim Touring Options
Amangiri Private Tour: Experience the peaceful
bliss of the North Rim with a private Adventure
Partners tour. Adventure Partners provides
private transportation to the North Rim as well
as a customized interpretive tour within the
park. All entrance fees are included. The North
Rim is open only during the summer months;
typically from mid-May thru mid-November.
With its proximity to much lower population
density areas, the North Rim of the Grand
Canyon receives only about 10% of the annual
visitation of the South Rim. This offers a much
less developed and more peaceful alternative
to the South Rim. Several viewpoints can be
easily accessed by all ability levels. The North
Rim is approximately one-thousand feet (three
hundred and four meters) higher than the South
Rim, with Point Imperial rising over 8800 feet
(2,682 meters) above sea level, making this an
ideal escape on a hot summer day.
18
Zion

that is home to over nine hundred
species of plants , seventy eight species
of mammals, two hundred and ninety
one species of birds, forty four species

including North America’s second largest
free standing monolith, The Great White
Throne, will engulf you as you descend
deep into this lush canyon. Hiking and
sightseeing opportunities are suited to all
ages and ability levels.
Zion Touring Options

National Park with a private Adventure

provides private transportation to and
from the park, as well as a customized

Bryce Canyon

At Bryce Canyon National Park hundreds
of pillars of sandstone, known as hoodoos,
create a maze of canyons and grottos.
Unworldly landscapes, numerous view points
and engaging hiking trails make this a worthy
day trip from Amangiri. Bryce Canyon National
Park is located over three thousand feet
(nine hundred meters) higher than Amangiri,
making it a great park to visit in the warmer
summer months.

Cultural Experiences
Thousands of years before European pioneers ventured into what is now the American Southwest,
Native Americans were thriving in this arid land. The descendents of these hardy individuals, including
the Navajo people, continue to thrive in the region to this day. Amangiri is fortunate to be in close
proximity to the historic and contemporary points of interest that speak to the tribal connection to this
land, including the nearby Navajo Nation (the largest Native American Nation in the United States).
Amangiri has developed relationships to help connect our guests with the past, present and future
of these Native Peoples. We recommend the Monument Valley tours to help you become better
acquainted with the culture of the original southwest settlers.
23
Monument Valley
Monument Valley is located on the Navajo Reservation and is operated by the Navajo Nation lending it a unique cultural aspect.
Monument Valley is almost completely undeveloped and remains much the same as it did a thousand years ago. Also known as
the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park and best known and recognized as the site of numerous films, Monument Valley is as
an iconic western landscape as you will find anywhere. Amangiri has a relationship with Goulding’s Lodge, the original outpost
in Monument Valley, to provide our guests with custom, private tours of Monument Valley. Harry and Mike Goulding were
instrumental in developing the filming, and tourism, business in the area.
Monument Valley Touring Options
Amangiri offers three and a half hour guided tours with Navajo guides. The tour is of the well known Monument Valley area,
including famous features such as The Mittens; Merrick Butte and The Totem Pole. A seven hour tour explores the Monument
Valley region and the restricted area known as Mystery Valley.
Monument Valley Transportation Options
Scenic Flight: Amangiri has the ability to offer you a private air tour with a landing at Monument Valley for your ground tour.
You will have the choice to fly to Monument Valley in a helicopter, or fixed wing aircraft.
Amangiri Guide: The resort is pleased to arrange private ground transportation to Monument Valley with one of our guides.
The Adventure Partners guide will escort you and your Navajo guide, providing support as needed.

On-Property Via Ferratas
Via Ferrata: Italian for “iron road”, a series of fixed cables and
ladder rungs used to climb steep mountain routes.
Studhorse Via Ferrata – Up and Down
The Studhorse Via Ferrata is a combination scramble and
technical climb using vertical steel rungs attached to the
sandstone wall of Studhorse Mesa. No previous climbing
experience is required for this guided-only ascent, but guests
should be reasonably fit and experienced hikers. All guests will
be lead by an experienced guide and will be wearing helmets
and harnesses. Once on top of Studhorse Mesa, guests can
walk the short distance to Skylight Arch to enjoy panoramic
views of Lake Powell, Navajo Mountain and the Grand Staircase
Escalante National Monument. Round trip is approximately
a-mile-and-a-half (two-and-a-half kilometers) with five-hundred
feet (one hundred and fifty meters) of vertical ascent and
descent.
Climbers younger than 10 years of age will be assigned their
own guide with an additional fee. Duration: 3 hours
Studhorse Via Ferrata with Studhorse Mesa Loop Hike
From the top of the Studhorse Via Ferrata, guests may continue
across Studhorse Mesa for an off-trail hike into the most
remote section of the Amangiri property. The additional three
miles (four point eight kilometers) of hiking explores isolated
canyons located on the backside of Studhorse Mesa and returns
via the Studhorse, Sunrise and Cabin Trails.
Climbers younger than 10 years of age will be assigned their
own guide with an additional fee. Duration: 5 hours
29
Cave Peak Via Ferrata
The Cave Peak Via Ferrata is more challenging
and exposed than the Studhorse and Hoodoo.
It includes climbing steeper, more sustained,
sections of rungs; a spectacular airy traverse;
and a dramatic summit. Like all Amangiri Via
Ferrata routes this peak is guided-only. With an
unmatched vertical route of ascent, spectacular
position and a summit clearly visible from the
Amangiri Pavilion, the Cave Peak Via Ferrata is
destined to become one of the all-time great
southwest adventures.
Climbers younger than 10 years of age will be
assigned their own guide with an additional fee.
Duration: 3 hours
30
31
Hoodoo Via Ferrata
The Hoodoo Via Ferrata ascends an impressive peak high above the Hoodoo
Trail. There are commanding views in every direction with amazing geology
and a hidden “canyonesque” line of ascent. This guided-only adventure is
sure to captivate hikers and climbers alike. The expansive summit allows for
significant exploration including a short slot canyon loop hike.
The newest addition to the Hoodoo Via Ferrata is an eighteen inch wide
(forty five centimeter), two hundred and thirty two foot (seventy meters)
suspension bridge spanning a six hundred foot (one hundred and eight two
meter) deep gorge.
Climbers younger than 10 years of age will be assigned their own guide with
an additional fee. Duration: 3 hours
Rappel training can be added to a Hoodoo Via Ferrata climb adding
approximately one hour.
Red Line Ridge Via Ferrata
The Red Line Ridge, ascends an exposed spine of Entrada Sandstone to the
top of Studhorse Mesa. The sand in the Entrada was laid down in a vast
Sahara-like dune field about 165 million years ago. Groundwater eventually
penetrated these sandy deposits and brought solutions of iron oxide,
which turned the loose sand to lithified red stone. Multiple generations of
groundwater or other fluids (perhaps even hydrocarbons) flushed some of
the red oxide color out of the stone, leaving red streaks within the larger
mass of pure, bleached-white sandstone. Guests must first climb one of
Amangiri’s other Via Ferrata routes, or be pre-approved by a guide, before
climbing Red Line Ridge. Duration: 3 hours
From the top of the Red Line Ridge Via Ferrata, guests may continue across
Studhorse Mesa for an off-trail hike into the most remote section of the
Amangiri property. The additional three miles (four point eight kilometers)
of hiking explores isolated canyons located on the backside of Studhorse
Mesa and returns via the Studhorse, Sunrise and Cabin Trails.
32

Full Day Hiking Tours
Buckskin Gulch
Buckskin Gulch has been described as the longest, narrowest slot canyon in
the world. There are two access points for this remarkable hike - “Wire Pass”,
the easiest approach via Buckskin’s mouth, and the “Middle Route”, requiring a
scramble to the canyon floor. Both entries are about an hour drive from the resort,
passing through open red-rock country before entering the nearly fifteen mile
(twenty-four kilometer) long canyon. Along the hike you will encounter petroglyph
panels depicting bighorn sheep and twisted rock formations providing dramatic
photo opportunities. The hike requires you to be reasonably fit and able to walk for
at least four hours through a variety of conditions and terrain (Middle Route hikers
should be up for a scramble and use of a rope). A good weather forecast is a must
before entering this canyon due to potential danger of flash flooding. Buckskin’s
narrow, shady canyon floor can be a wonderful escape during the heat of the
summer months.
Skill Level: Intermediate to Advanced, Duration: 6 to 8 hours.
Route conditions may vary according to season. Check with a member of the
Amangiri Activities Team for current information.
North and South Coyote Buttes
Two magnificent areas for full day guided excursion are North Coyote Buttes (home
to the famous Wave rock formation) and South Coyote Buttes wilderness areas.
To access North or South Coyote Buttes a permit must be obtained from the U.S.
Bureau of Land Management (BLM). These permits are issued daily via an inperson lottery at the BLM headquarters in Kanab, Utah. On your chosen day, we
will schedule a full day hiking excursion with our in-house guide service, Adventure
Partners. The day prior to the trip, Adventure Partners will attend the lottery on
your behalf. They will apply for a North Coyote Buttes permit first and if they are
not successful they will attempt to obtain a South Coyote Buttes permit. The North
Coyote Buttes permits are the hardest permits to obtain, as there are often over
one-hundred applicants vying for ten permits. The South Coyote Buttes permits are less sought after, but of course there is no
guarantee. Both areas are magnificent, with many local hikers feeling that ‘foot-by-foot’ the South Coyote Buttes area offers
more diverse and interesting terrain. If we are unable to obtain either a North, or South, Coyote Buttes permit we have several
other great wilderness locations to take you to for your full day excursion. These can include visiting either Thousand Pockets;
Hodge’s Hideaway (you won’t find this on any map); or the Middle Route of Buckskin Gulch. All of these options are favorites
of Amangiri employees and the guides at Adventure Partners. We offer this as a package that includes the permit process and
a full day guided excursion.
Half Day Hiking Tours
Hodge’s Hideaway
A never ending quest for adventure has led the Amangiri team into new and unexplored
territories. Our team of explorers has fallen in love with this wide open, rarely visited,
area of slickrock. Abundant Native American artifacts are a testimony to the sparse travel
this area receives. With no trails, no roads, and no campsites, you will be immersed into
a feeling of deep backcountry exploration, when in fact the area is less than an hour
away from the resort, and access is quite easy. Two main access points allow for guided
tours that will be exploratory and rewarding. As this is a vast area that would take
several days to explore, we also encourage full day tours of Hodge’s Hideaway.
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate, Duration: 4 - 5 hours
Yellow Dome
Adjacent to Hackberry Canyon, the massive multicolored sandstone monolith of Yellow
Dome offers an attainable summit with spectacular views. If you are looking for a
challenge, this relatively short trek requires a steep approach scramble and some routefinding ability. On the summit of Yellow Dome the Grand Staircase Escalante National
Monument’s colorful landscape, and remarkable rock formations, will be yours to
behold. Seemingly endless views stretch out before you to the north, east and west. This
half day experience can be booked as a full day by adding a loop hike from Yellow Dome
into The Box of the Paria Canyon or a short trek up Hackberry Canyon.
Skill Level: Intermediate/Advanced, Duration: 5 hours (half day) to 8 hours (full day).
Paria Overlook
Plateaus and deep canyons ultimately define the landscape of the America Southwest.
A tour to Paria Overlook provides access to one of the lesser known, but magnificent,
views of a truly deep gorge and tributary of the Colorado River. Driving up the back of
the Ferry Swale, with commanding views of Grand Staircase National Monument, you
suddenly come upon Paria Canyon’s two thousand foot precipice view point. The views
of the Paria Canyon, Lake Powell, Navajo Mountain, Lee’s Ferry and the surrounding
landscape are on par with anything in the region. Photography opportunities abound,
along with short hikes to other jutting viewpoints. If you want to stand on the edge of
a great canyon (without the drive to Grand Canyon or Bryce) and contemplate the vast
spaces of the Colorado Plateau, Paria Overlook is not to be missed. This tour can also
include a stop and short walk to the Anasazi Look-Out/Pueblo Ruin.
Skill Level: Easy, Duration: 4-5 hours.

Three Hour Hiking Tours
Native American Rock Art Tour
Indigenous people have called the desert southwest home for many thousands
of years. Well preserved petroglyph and pictograph panels adorn the landscape
and offer a connection to the past. A three hour tour allows ample time to visit a
magnificent panel on the Amangiri property and a second panel that is a short drive
from the resort. Additional rock art panels can be added to this tour, making this a
half-day outing.
Skill Level: Beginner.
Resurrection Canyon
Resurrection Canyon, typically booked as a three hour tour, is a short 15 minute
drive from Amangiri. The hike/scramble drops into a whimsical, white Entrada
Sandstone canyon with numerous windows, hoodoos and winding chutes. The
route is ideal for photographers and anyone wishing to wander through the unique
erosional features visible in the distance from Amangiri’s pavilion windows. Hiking
distance can be tailored to guest fitness and goals. This is a wonderful introduction
to backcountry travel in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
Skill Level: Beginner.
Paria Rimrocks and Toadstools
The Paria Rimrocks area is well known locally for its amazing collection of hoodoos,
badlands, and other interesting rock formations. The most notable feature is the
Toadstool Hoodoo—a spectacular mushroom shaped rock spire. This trail grants
fantastic panoramas of the surrounding scenery as you wander through colorful
badlands and hoodoo gardens.
Skill Level: Beginner.
37
Amangiri On-Property Hiking Trails
Hoodoo Trail
The Hoodoo Trail is the most extensive trail on the property. The route has three
trailheads, allowing guests a variety of hiking options. The combined circuit hike
approaches three-and-a-half miles (five-and-a half kilometers), passing numerous
free-standing sandstone towers, known as hoodoos. Trail features include a narrow
slickrock pass, ancient sand dunes, carved steps, spectacular vistas and other
geological oddities. For those wishing to photograph the Hoodoo Suspension Bridge
from below, a trail sign directs hikers to a dramatic viewpoint. Look for a junction and
sign approximately .3 miles north of the hotel along the Hoodoo Trail.
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate, Est. Duration: 2 hours for full loop.
Cave Trail
The Broken Arrow Cave is a popular destination and a significant archeological study
site. Due to its scientific relevance and sensitive resources, we request you do not
enter the cave without an Amangiri guide. The adjacent false mine shaft was used
as a set for the 1996 film Broken Arrow starring John Travolta, Christian Slater, and
Samantha Mathis. More recently, the cave was used as a studio for German earth
painter Ulrike Arnold to create the paintings that are displayed throughout the resort.
There are several interpretive signs which describe the site’s ancient rock art and
contemporary art history. The trailhead for the Cave Trail is the same as the Hoodoo
Trailhead which is closest to the resort. The Hoodoo Trail and the Cave Trail split at a
well-marked intersection.
Skill Level: Beginner, Est. Duration: 1-2 hours.
Studhorse Trail
The trailhead for this hike is located across from the Amangiri Cabin, approximately
one mile (one-and-a-half kilometers) from the front steps of the resort. The trail
follows a rolling ridgeline to the south, providing spectacular views of the Ferry
Swale, a multihued panorama. The trail exits Amangiri property and enters into Glen
Canyon National Recreation Area and Bureau of Land Management administered
public land. A short slot canyon is the destination and turn-around point. The trail is
approximately one-and-a-half miles in length (two-and-a-half kilometers).
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate. Est. Duration: 2 hours.

39
Mountain Biking Tours
From beginer to expert the area around Amangiri offers some of the worlds best mountain biking
HALF DAY TOUR:
The Page Mesa Rim Trail is meant for experienced mountain bikers. This ten mile loop include stretches that feel remote and
other section that will remind guests they are in an urban environment.
FULL DAY TOURS:
Gooseberry Mesa with stunning views of Zion National Park can accommodate riders of all skill levels. Gooseberry offers
challenging, technical riding, and dreamy single-track that weaves through stands of juniper and pinyon trees.
Rainbow Rim Trail at Grand Canyon is meant for experienced mountain bike riders. The trail offers an extremely unique
experience; it is the only single-track trail on the rim of the Grand Canyon open to bikes. Adventure Partners will guide guests
on a portion of the eighteen mile trail based on riding ability.
Thunder Mountain Trail just outside of Bryce Canyon National Park is meant for experienced single-track mountain bike
riders. The twelve-and-a-half mile ride include a paved five mile uphill section and seven-and-a-half miles of downhill riding,
including short sections of loose, steep switchbacks.
All mountain bike tours with Adventure Partners include transportation to the destination, top-of-the-line bike rentals, expert
guided mountain bike guides, and lunch prepared by the Amangiri kitchen.

Paleontology Tours
The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is one of the richest
paleontology sites in the world.
Amangiri’s in-house guide service, Adventure Partners and The Grand
Staircase Escalante Partners (GSE Partners) have fostered a partnership to
provide a paleontological interpreter to accompany Amangiri guests to active
paleontology dig sites.
The tours includes a donation to the Grand Staircase Escalante Partners, a
friends group of the Monument.
Fossil Excavation
The first stop on the tour is the Tibbet Spring Bone Bed Quarry,
where the interpreter will discuss geology, paleontology and
the other natural and historic resources and will instruct guests
how to excavate the site using standard scientific protocols and
provide oversight on the excavation. Guests will be involved in a
scientific excavation of the site for up to three hours. Lunch will
be provided by Amangiri. On the return trip, guests will make
a brief stop at the Big Water Visitor Center before returning to
Amangiri. The Fossil Extraction tour is an eight hour tour.
Paleontology Introduction
Amangiri’s close proximity to a vast bed of 90 million year old
marine fossils, Jurassic Period dinosaur tracks and the GSENM
Visitor Center in Big Water Utah create an ideal environment for
an introduction to the paleontology work that has been ongoing
in the GSENM. Guests will visit these three locations on this halfday tour.
44
ATV Rides
Plateaus and deep canyons ultimately define the landscape of the American
Southwest. ATV rides to Paria Overlook or Alstrom Point provide access to some
of the lesser known but magnificent views of truly deep gorges and tributaries of
the Colorado River.
Driving up the back of the Ferry Swale, with commanding views of Grand Staircase
National Monument, you suddenly come upon Paria Canyon’s two thousand
foot precipice view point. The views of the Paria Canyon, Lake Powell, Navajo
Mountain, Lee’s Ferry and the surrounding landscape are on par with anything in
the region. Alstrom point is one of the most spectacular viewpoints of Lake Powell
and the Glen Canyon.
These two locations can be visited individually as half-day trips or combined to
create a full day of riding.
If you want to stand on the edge of a great canyon (without the drive to Grand
Canyon or Bryce) and contemplate the vast spaces of the Colorado Plateau, Paria
Overlook and Alstrom Point are not to be missed.

adventure when they embrace combination tours.

The ride can be tailored to suit beginning riders and expert horsemen.
Off-Property Rides
Amangiri also offers private off-property horseback rides. These rides meander above a jigsaw puzzle of ridges and canyons.

flows towards the Grand Canyon through towering one-thousand
foot (three-hundred meter) high walls of Navajo Sandstone. The
peaceful stretch of river is perfect for scenic float trips.
Private River Tour
Half-day excursions begin with private transportation from Amangiri
to the base of the Glen Canyon Dam. Your trip includes a privately
guided boat trip down fifteen stunning miles (twenty-four kilometers)
of the Colorado River.
A leisurely stop on one of the river’s beautiful sandy beaches provides
you time to enjoy a picnic lunch beneath the towering cliffs.
You will disembark from the raft at historic Lee’s Ferry, which marks
the beginning of the river’s course into Grand Canyon National Park.
Amangiri offers the opportunity to fly back to the resort via helicopter,
with a landing on top of Tower Butte. Tower Butte is a 700 foot tall
free-standing butte overlooking Lake Powell and the surrounding
desert.

upper loop tour where guests are returned by boat to the base of the
dam.

California Condor Field Day
with The Peregrine Fund
Amangiri is pleased to offer an opportunity to spend a day in the field with Condor
Field Project Supervisor, Chris Parish.
In 1982 only twenty-two individual California Condors remained alive. Today, the
Condor population has dramatically increased to over four hundred, with more than
half of these majestic animals living in the wild. While still threatened, the efforts of
The Peregrine Fund, and many other public and private agencies, have provided an
avenue for the recovery of the species.
Chris Parish has held the position of Condor Project Coordinator since 1997 and has
been instrumental in the ongoing education and awareness that has brought about
the resurgence of the population. Chris’ engaging demeanor and seemingly endless
knowledge provide guests with a congenial host that will entertain and educate all
ages. Chris will come to the resort in the morning and give a brief presentation on
the success of the program and ongoing efforts by The Peregrine Fund to ensure
a successful recovery. After the presentation, Chris will escort guests to the local
release site, high atop the towering Vermillion Cliffs. The visit to the site is a nonscripted tour that may include the opportunity to meet other wildlife biologists and
observe ongoing field work.
A large portion of your tour fee goes directly to The Peregrine Fund to help support
their conservation efforts. Guests who would like to further support The Peregrine
Fund are encouraged to speak with Chris, or a member of the Amangiri Activities
Team.
Skill Level: All levels, Duration: 7 hours
Summer Recommended Attire: Comfortable clothing and a hat.
Winter Recommended Attire: Layered clothing, warm hat and gloves.
51
Evening Programs
and Special Opportunities
Amangiri offers a variety of evening programs and special opportunities throughout
the year. An ever expanding pallet of activities include; Native American story tellers
and dancers; astronomy presentations; outdoor movie nights; geology talks; and
photography workshops.
Many of these experts can be scheduled for a private session for you and your party.
Please inquire with a member of the Amangiri Activities Team regarding private
performances.
Large Group Activities
Amangiri is a perfect place for weddings, corporate gatherings, large family affairs
and other group occasions. The Amangiri Activities Team will work with you to
identify activities that are best suited to your group’s size, interests and ability levels.
We specialize in custom itineraries that will excite even the most seasoned traveler.
52
Horses and History
The perfect ending to a day in the high desert is a meal prepared outside by
Amangiri chefs.
Raven’s Nest
One of the special locations for an outdoor meal on the Amangiri property is an
amphitheater that has been naturally carved from Entrada Sandstone called Gaa’
Gii Bi’ Toh, which is Navajo for The Raven’s Nest. Ravens are large black birds
that are common in our area, as well as in Navajo stories and culture. With a fire
pit, camping chairs and an area for chefs and servers, this amphitheater is a great
dinner setting for couples, or family gatherings of up to eight guests.
Horses and History
One of the most popular options for a dinner at the Raven’s Nest is what we have
dubbed Horses and History. In addition to experiencing a fantastic outdoor meal,
guests travel to the Raven’s Nest via a one hour private horseback ride and upon
arrival they are entertained by a Navajo Elder, and traditional Native American
dancers.
Other dining options include our Desert Lounge, Fireside Pavilion and the Chinle
Tent Site. Please ask a member of the Amangiri staff for dining options at these
great locations.

Self-Guided Activities
A few suggestions for quality time at little or no cost.
No matter what your plans are, feel free to use us as a local resource. If you are planning on self-driving to a nearby national
park, we can help you avoid some of the crowded locations and help you see some of the most stunning sites. Once you are at
the resort, feel free to sit down with one of the members of the Activities Team and discuss your plans with them – you never
know what ‘locals only’ tip they may offer up.
SLOW DOWN AND TAKE IT IN: Enjoy the Amangiri property, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Take a
leisurely walk at sunrise, or sunset, and allow the long shadows and glow of the sky envelop you in comfort and peace. Don’t
discount enjoying the pool; partaking in the daily complimentary group hikes; stretching out in a morning group yoga session or
joining an afternoon Pilates session.
NATIONAL PARK TOURS: Guests who are comfortable driving to and from the nearby national parks are encouraged to speak
with a member of the Amangiri Activities Team for advice on how to best self-tour these magnificent areas. Members of the
Amangiri Activities Team can give you some “local insider tips “on the best places to park to catch the shuttle and beat some of
the crowds. A $25 park entrance fee will be required upon arrival at the east entrance station.
WAHWEAP OVERLOOK: A perfect way to wrap up a peaceful day in the desert is to take a short drive to the Wahweap Overlook.
This hilltop vantage point offers a spectacular location to gaze at, and photograph, Lake Powell. Interpretive signs, shelter and
benches have been installed by the U.S. Park Service to enhance your enjoyment.
HORSESHOE BEND: This self-guided, free access hike is located thirty minutes away from Amangiri. The three-quarter-of-a-mile
trail is well marked and easy to follow. Hikers will be rewarded by the eye-popping one-thousand foot deep meandering gorge
of The Colorado River.
NAVAJO NATIONAL MONUMENT: Ranger led hikes allow fit hikers the ability to learn about Native American traditions of the
Southwestern United States. The trail descends 700 feet into a canyon that is home to well-preserved cliff dwellings.
BUCKSKIN GULCH: Buckskin Gulch and the access canyon Wire Pass are well known slot canyons that can be self-guided by
seasoned desert hikers. A minor bit of route finding ability and the skill to negotiate small scrambles are all that are required to
navigate this remote canyon. A required $6 Bureau of Land Management day use permit can be purchased on site, so please
remember to bring some cash.
LOWER ANTELOPE CANYON: Located on the Navajo Nation, Lower Antelope Canyon provides you the ability to join a public
tour into one of the Southwest’s most visited canyons. Tours last approximately one hour and can be arranged in person on
site, prior to joining a group. Tours costs $26 and must be paid in cash.
Desert Hiking Tips
Hike in Cooler Temperatures
Summer hiking presents challenges that cannot be taken lightly. Plan an early morning or evening departure to take advantage
of cooler temperatures. Hiking in direct sunshine, in the heat of the day, increases your risk of a heat-related illness. You will
make better time and feel better if you use shaded rest stops often in your travels.
Carry Plenty of Water
Adequate water intake is critical for a safe and enjoyable trip in the desert environment. When planning a full day hike, water
should be the heaviest item in your pack. Some desert travelers will drink at least 1 gallon of water per day. While hiking in the
desert heat, everyone sweats around 0.5 – 1 quart of water and electrolytes each and every hour they walk in the heat.
Eat Adequate Amounts
Eating adequate amounts of food will help guarantee you are replacing the electrolytes (salts) that you are sweating out. You
will need two to three times your normal food intake to meet your energy needs while hiking.
Plan Your Trip Carefully
Always tell someone where you are going and when you will return. Check local weather forecasts and road conditions. Summer
monsoons and flash floods can make travel in narrow drainages extremely dangerous. Stick with your itinerary, and check
in when you return. It is easy to become disoriented in the desert where many landmarks and rock formations look similar.
Amangiri staff members are available to offer advice or help plan an itinerary.
Dress Properly
Protect yourself from the elements. Good hiking shoes, loose fitting breathable fabrics with UPF protection, a wide brimmed
hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are a must. A high SPF sunscreen should be applied liberally and regularly. Desert temperatures
can reach over 100 degrees in the middle of the day. In winter, we recommend that you dress in layers and wear warm gloves
and a warm hat that covers your ears.
