LoFric – proven over time
Introduced in 1983, LoFric® was
the world’s first hydrophilic urinary
catheter for clean intermittent selfcatheter­ization (CIC). At the time, it
was a revolution, replacing the need
for inconvenient and less ­effective
gels and making catheter­isation
easier, more comfortable and safer.
Today hydrophilic catheters are
­common. But they are not all the
same. The tube coating formula
and other features vary between ­the
products. LoFric catheters all ­feature
unique Urotonic™ Surface ­Technology
(UST), a coating that makes the
tube’s surface layer isotonic to urine,
ensuring extremely low friction
between the catheter and urethra.
UST is only available on LoFric
catheters.
Thanks to UST, LoFric catheters are
the only ones proven to minimize
long-term health complications over
time. LoFric has been studied and
assessed in third party, independent
medical reviews many times since its
introdcution. Today there is convincing
clinical evidence supporting the

Urotonic™ Surface Technology
– low friction­during the entire catheterization
LoFric catheters are the only ones
available with Urotonic™ Surface
­Technology (UST). This catheter tube
coating has been proven time and
again, over many years, to be more
comfortable and less harmful than
other friction-minimizing solutions,
such as lubrication gel (see references
on this page).
UST makes catheterization safer
and more comfortable not only at
insertion, but also during withdrawal.
The reason for minimal friction during
the entire process of catheter­ization
is due to a combination of two
properties:
Once activated, UST creates a
hydrophilic surface that is isotonic
to urine – the salt content on the
surface is the same as in urine.
The salt attracts and binds water to
the cath­eter tube. Being isotonic to
urine prevents water from the surface
of the catheter to migrate into the
surrounding tissue (the urethra)
causing the catheter surface to dry
out and thus increasing friction at
withdrawal. Therefore, LoFric
catheters slide in and out of the
urethra in a smooth and frictionless
way – making catheter­ization more
comfortable, and safe over time.

The outer layer of the catheter – the Urotonic™
Surface Technology consists of a thin polyvinyl­
pyrrolidone (PVP) layer that together with salt,
in the right concentration, binds water on the
surface of the catheter. This ensures the
catheter tube remains slippery, comfortable
