Dear Nellie,
Do you thin k that two people have to be compatible in everyt hing in order f or a relationship to work or is having differences important to keep the relationship on it's toes and
spicy? My friends recently broke u p and I believe they are making a big mistake. True
love is hard to fin d and should be given a second chance. They both look sad and I believe that the break u p is making hearts grow fon der n ot easing the pain for either of
them. Both are stubborn! Can you share some of your opinions and experiences with us
in hopes t hat they may read this and get some help.
Signed, A Concerned Party
Dear A Concerned Party,
I can appreciate your concern for your friends however, sometimes it is best t o leave couples work out their own problems without t he added stress of external pressures and distractions. Yes, I do believe that people can have long-lasting and love filled relationships
without being 100% compatible. That would be qu ite boring and almost like dating
“yourself”. What is important is to fin d a balance between everything. Each party has to
learn to give and take and work on issues that are important t o them. If they look sad,
they probably are. It is not easy facing the possibility of losing someone you love. Decisions will have t o be made hopin g that there will be no regrets in the future.
Give them time, with distance, reflection of the fun and happy t imes they spent together
in the past and how im portant each one is to one another, along with open and honest
dialogue, they may decide to give the relationship another chance. This will have to be
their decision, not yours. My suggestion would be to start fresh, move slow and really get
to know h ow to deal with the “incom patibilities”. Everyone deserves a second chance,
especially if they found love in each other t o begin with.
Don’t rush or pressure them. Y ou may be causing more harm than good!
Sincerely, Nellie

Ragged Mane
An Inter view by Nathalie M acNeil
This week, The Highland Heart Weekly’s musical spotlight is on Ragged Mane, a five
member folk/rock band based right here in Antigonish. In between his papers and assignments, Matt Howard of Ragged Mane, gave me the pleasure of an interview to share
with our readers.
When not playing
gigs, band members
Jonathan
Deyoung
(Drums), Zack Pettipas (Bass), Justin
Layes (Rhythm Guitar), John Stephenson
(Lead Guitar) and
Matt Howard (Vocals)
can
be
found
throughout St.FXU.
Zack and Matt are in
their third year of a
BA program, Jonathan is a fourth year
kinetics
student,
Justin is in his third
year of biology and John is a third year arts student majoring in music.
The band did open mics and played at house parties but it wasn’t until they started performing at the Inn on Campus that they began to get serious. Although Ragged Mane do
write and perform their own originals, Matt admits that Hey Rose tta covers are their
favorites.
NM: Give a bit of history of how the band first came together?
MH: Justin, Zack, Jonathan, and myself spent last summer together and played for fun at
open mics around town but as soon as break was over we asked John to join us. Jonathan, Zack and Justin grew up together. I met them my first year here, and we knew John
through some other friends of ours.
NM: How did you come up with the name Ragged Mane?
MH: It was definitely a task having the guys come up with/voting on different names.
We were trying to find something that carried a lot of meaning for us, being so proud of
our roots in eastern Canada, and Justin suggested Ragged Mane, which for him, was emblematic of the Sable Island horses.
NM: Which types of venues do you play?
MH: We’ve played acoustic shows and lively electric gigs, and have enjoyed doing both.
So far most of our venues have been bars or lounges but the odd house party is always a
lot of fun. We were asked in early February to play a fundraiser for CJFX the Fox at the
Inn and had a great night, sharing the stage with some talented local musicians.

Improving Anxiety and Depression using
Aromatherapy with Pure Essential Oils
By Nanc y M acFarlane, Certified Ar omatherapist
Many of us deal with depression and anxiety at
some point in our lives or know someone who is
living with depression. .Aromatherapy was a
commonplace therapy to help improve your
anxiety and depression in ancient times. India is
the only place in the world where the tradit ion
was never lost. Today we see the word aromatherapy on many products but unfortunately
most of these brands don’t use pure essential
oils. In order for someone t o really feel the
benefits you need to make sure t he essential oils
you are using are of good quality or you will not
see the results. I would like to introduce how
holistic aromatherapy or usin g pure essential oils
can trigger a healing response in the body.
When you take a bott le of pure orange essential
oil and simply in hale the aroma it will stimulant
the lymphatic system, aid in concentration, give
you feelings of courage and it creates happiness
which helps t o stop the feeling of stress or worry
all in one sniff. The molecules of the essential oil
rise to the t op of the n ose. Here they meet the
olfactory mucous membrane. The receptors
identify t he smell and get passed to the oldest
part of the brain the limbic system. This will trigger nerve impulses; memory, sexualit y, emotional reactions and creativit y are found here. By simply
smelling an oil this will cause change in the body, the immune system could be activated, blood
pressure changed, calm, h ungry, active, free from pain… each essential oil is un ique to each person
in how it is received. Essential oils can also be used in massage, baths, creams and lotions. Most
emotional and mental problems are best treated though inhalation using an aroma lamp, diffuser,
in a bath or sauna. There are many essentials to help lift your spirits; here are just a couple of my
suggestions.
To start your day take the following essential oils and add drops to a handkerchief or s omething
you can carry with you to smell throughout the day. Or add this to 3 tbsp of unscented lotion or
cream mix up well and apply on your wrists.
3 drops of Lemon
2 drops of spearmint
1 drop of rosemary
Taking a bath with this blend will help you relax and have a restful sleep. Add 1-2 cups of Epson
salts in a bowl t hen add the followin g essential oils, mix this up well and add to your full bath
3 drops of Orange
2 drops of chamomile
2 drops of geranium
Along with using aromatherapy, good food and exercise are very important to improve your depression and bring back balance to your life.

NM: What do you like best about performing?
MH: It is always great to play for a lively audience it makes all the difference when you
are performing and the crowd is feeling the music, it’s a shared energy between the listeners and the band. We definitely consider it a privilege to get to do what we do and we’ve
gotten a lot of opportunities to meet so many great people that have helped us along.
NM: Give a one word description of each band member.
MH: Justin=Methodical, John=At Ease, Zack= Funk-Master, Matt=Airy and Jonathan= Vivacious
NM: Summer plans?
MH: Hopefully to play as much as we can, we have some shows booked in Halifax for early
to mid May, and a few things lined up around Antigonish. We are excited that the group
will all be living in town for the summer!
Although Matt is lead vocals, he does admit that “everyone can get by”. They have been
experimenting with their harmonies and the longer they play the easier it’s getting.
Although their music is not yet available for purchase, most of their videos can be found
on YouTube. They are hoping to get some demo recordings finished in April just as soon
as school is out.
With influences from blues and funk to Celtic and folk, their sound is sure to please everyone!
