The Indio Senior Center provides a place where people, 50 years & better, can leisurely socialize, make new
friends, share their skills and ideas, learn new things and gather information. It is dedicated to enhance and
dignify the quality of the lives of our experienced and culturally diverse aging population. These are only some

specialized equipment to California residents who

permanent or temporary hearing or vision loss or

As you “strain” to hear you become more isolated and uninvolved! Please come and have
your hearing checked. If you
have hearing loss, they will provide a FREE hearing
amplifier. Ears4me will be here to do hearing screenings and then to check your batteries and to answer
questions.

On average, one American dies of a
stroke every four minutes, making the
stroke the fifth leading cause of death
in this country. What can you do to
prevent your risk of a stroke? If you’ve
already had a stroke, what can you do to prevent another? How should you respond if you think someone
you know is having a stroke?
The must-see panel discussion in partnership with the
American Heart Association-Coachella Valley, will
cover all aspects of stroke prevention and recovery.
Panelists will include experts from UCR School of

SUPPORT GROUPS
Support groups are made up of people with common interests and experiences. People who have been
through, or are going through, a similar circumstance can do more than sympathize with you — they can truly
understand your thoughts, feelings and questions. The important thing to remember is support groups are
not all alike. There are many models, check it out for yourself. A good support group can become a transformative part of your life, so if there is one around that pertains to you, take the plunge and check it out!

Tired of filling out those pesky forms?
ISC’s annual FREE Income Tax assistance from AARP starts for this year
on February 1st.
The IRS is very concerned about identity theft and filing false returns, as a result the following
new rules will be strictly enforced (even if you’ve had your
taxes prepared at the ISC in the past).
What is required from every client:
- A valid photo ID (Driver’s License, Passport, Federal or
State government ID);
- You must bring a valid Social Security Number (SSN) for
EVERY taxpayer and any DEPENDENTS you wish to claim;
- Copy of Last Years 2014 tax return;
- W-2’s and 1099’s for 2015 income;
- SSA 1099 for Social Security income;
- Brokers statements for an investment income;
- Form 1095 if you had health ins. under affordable care act
If itemizing deductions you will need:
- Medical and Charitable Deductions List;
- Property Tax bills;
- Car Registration;
- 1098 Mortgage Interest;
- 1098-T Tuition Statement;
No ID – No Taxes prepared!

Our volunteer is a licensed beautician and has
many years of experience and is here one day
(sometimes two days) a month. Come
with your hair washed, and prepare to
look better! Haircuts are free, but a
donation of $3 is suggested to cover
cleaning supplies, and of course you can
leave a tip.

IID’s Residential Energy Assistance Program (REAP)
was designed to provide customers with a discounted
rate on their electric bills. If you meet the incomequalifying guidelines, IID offers you a 20% discount

MEALS ON WHEELS
Mizell Senior Center has the largest Meals On
Wheels Program in the Coachella Valley, serving
nearly 350 meals each day to homebound seniors
throughout the entire Coachella Valley. For many of
these clients, the Meals on Wheels driver is their only
outside contact, and a connection to the world and
services that they would otherwise be unable to
access. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday
with special meals on holidays. If you would like
Meals on Wheels delivered to your home, contact the
Mizell Senior Center at (760)323-5689.

must change how it cares for its elders. The community leaders make a grassroots effort to build Green
Houses, group living spaces that provide an alternative to traditional nursing homes. What they do will

The Friends of the Indio Senior Center will be presenting an art
show here at the ISC featuring artwork by local artists who are
members of the DES ARTs Club in Indio.
We will feature various art works for sale. There are some very
talented artists in DES ARTS and they are excited to be represented here at ISC. Some artists will be available during the show
to answer questions and discuss art work medium and style, and
also an artist demonstrating techniques.
There will be a raffle drawing each day at 9:00 a.m. and
1:00 p.m., for donated artwork. This has
been an exciting and huge success during
our previous shows. What an opportunity
to win artwork for a donation of $1.00 per
ticket or $5.00 for six tickets and the proceeds go to the Indio Senior Center.
This can be a fun opportunity to meet the artists and see some great art work, purchase art
work for your homes, and help raise funds for the FOISC. Raffles too!

SENIOR INSPIRATION AWARDS

The City of Indio’s 2016 Senior Inspiration Awards recipient is Blanche Martinez.
Blanche is always smiling and ready to help and believes that “she should be out helping and doing for someone else”. Blanche and her husband moved to the Coachella Valley in 1982.
Blanche worked at JFK Hospital at the switchboard, from 1985 until she retired in 2002. After
her husband passed away in 2006, she started to volunteer at the ISC as a receptionist assistant
and then in 2007 at JFK Hospital. At the ISC she has been volunteering weekly, helping out at
the front desk, greeting members, giving tours, lots of clerical help, and she is also the Tai Chi
Class lead. At JFK she volunteers every week at the front desk, edits the auxiliary newsletter and helps with fundraising. She stays active doing Tai Chi twice a week and walks. She says “I am a happy person and try to spread good
cheer everyday“. If you would like to purchase tickets to attend this wonderful event, please call 760-863-2556.
The luncheon is $25 per person. When you order tickets mention you’re with the ISC and will be attending to watch

used for urban combat (also known as Little

We have just finished planting our fall plants and
seeds and they are starting to grow! We
are still composting to help replenish
our bins. Please see Nancy if you have
anything that you would like to add to
the compost bins. The back garden area
is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the peace of the
garden; we have comfortable benches out there too.

Friends I hope you had a joyous and peaceful Christmas. The Friends are moving into the New Year full
steam ahead. Two long held goals are accomplished: 1. Our presence on the internet is now a reality, thanks
to Linda Henry of Wannabweb services. You can find Friends at FOISC.com 2. Frank Holguin Associates is
handling media relations for the Friends. Frank has a big job due to many events coming up. It will be a
busy year: Art Fair ( Marilyn Burch), Health Fair (Kathie MacKaman), and Book Fair (Nettie Washington).
Bingo (Silvia) will resume January 14, 2016. The Friends wish you and your family a great 2016.
