THE ROAD TO
OWNER OPERATOR SUCCESS
For many professional drivers, it’s the most exciting,
rewarding trip you’ll ever take…driving for yourself.
As an owner operator, when you’re good at your job,
you will profit from your superior skill and hard work.
“Like my Dad, I started with one
truck. As an owner operator,
my business grew through
a successful partnership.
When you partner with Roehl,
you’ve planned for success.”
Rick Roehl
President & Chief Operating Officer
Roehl Transport
( Pronounced “Rail” )
But like any road trip, you need a good map — a plan
that tells you which turns to take and what roads to
avoid; one with checkpoints along the way that assures
you’re heading in the right direction and making
progress, yet flexible enough to adjust to changing
conditions.
In today’s tenuous business environment, it helps to have
a solid business partner that understands the route.
And when it comes to putting owner operators
on the road to success, with over 50 years of
experience, Roehl Transport is the partner
you can trust.
SO WHERE DO YOU WANT
YOUR BUSINESS TO GO?
It’s a fundamental question— one of several you need to consider when developing a
sound business plan for success as an owner operator. You’ll find honest answers at Roehl.
In 1962, company founder Everett Roehl began his business, just like you, with one truck.
Roehl Transport has continued to grow every year since beginning operations. Roehl has
regularly been listed as one of the best-managed transportation companies in the nation.
And it has a plan to help its owner operator partners grow their businesses and be
successful just like the company founder.
Q: Revenue is important to any business; what kind of
income potential do you want?
A: Roehl offers owner operators lucrative compensation plans.
Van, Refrigerated or Curtainside rates are based on a sliding
mileage scale. Flatbed owner operators can select between two
compensation plans - a sliding mileage scale rate or a percent
of revenue based plan. Roehl's mileage based compensation
is paid using practical route mileage so you'll be compensated
for more of the miles you actually drive - in some instances 5%
more. And with the Power of Red, paid miles begin when
you start your trip. Most owner operators average 2,400 to
2,800 miles per week (if you choose).
Q: With rising operating costs, how will you control
expenses and maximize profitability?
A: Tires, parts and fuel are significant business expenses
for any trucking business. Roehl’s exclusive owner operator
support program helps you keep those expenses in check
so more of your revenue goes to your bottom line. As a small
business owner, you can experience the Power of Red.
With Roehl, you’ll save money through the purchasing power
and discounts of one of the nation’s largest carriers. That
includes a leading fuel program designed to maximize fuel
discounts and minimize road expenses. Plus, Roehl furnishes
your base plates and permits.
Q: How will you get enough shipping customers to
keep generating the revenue your business needs?
A: The fact is brokers and load boards are not a predictable
or reliable source of steady business. And any time you’d
spend selling your services to shippers is downtime and a
cost to your business—not an income generating activity.
When you team with Roehl on the other hand, you don’t
need to worry about where your next load will come from.
Q: Another component to your small business success
is managing risk; how will you protect your family and
investment?
A: Affording proper insurance is a real obstacle for any small
business owner. Roehl can provide your business access
to a wide network of industry vendors who can offer you
excellent group rates on business coverages as well as
health and life insurance packages for you and your family
members. Roehl helps owner operators plan for security.
It’s part of how the Power of Red works for you.
Nor will you be in the position of having to take less
desirable freight just to keep revenue flowing. Roehl
understands you want to keep your business moving;
the vast majority of Roehl’s freight is no touch. Freight
can be pre-planned so your business has less downtime
between loads.
Q: Even if the “operator” side of the business is old hat,
the “owner” side may be new. How will you learn the
ins and outs of successful business ownership?
A: Roehl offers business management classes with insights
and suggestions that will help your small business be
successful. You’ll also receive additional support from other
industry professionals, including consultants, accounting
services (with monthly, quarterly and annual profit and
loss statements—including tax return preparation) and
business analysts.
A partner you can trust.
1
If you’re ready to be a business
success, you’ll need a plan.
Answering these questions is the
first step. A Roehl owner operator
consultant will be happy to talk
with you about the answers
and help you develop a detailed
business plan for success.
Q. In order to go into business as an owner operator, you need to own a
tractor. How do you qualify for and manage that kind of up-front investment?
A: Roehl leasing helps many drivers afford trucks through their tractor lease/
purchase program. Both new and late-model tractors are available, depending
on your needs. With Roehl’s lease purchase program, tractor payments and
other business-related expenses are automatically deducted weekly from your
settlements. That way you don’t have to worry about initiating payments—
you can focus on business success.
Q: Going into business for yourself is a big step; how will you be sure your
business will be a good investment in the long run?
A: The long-term demand for trucking services is predicted to increase. It’s a growth
industry, offering a promising long-term future. Your business also needs to prosper
even during economic downcycles. That’s why it’s important you do business with
a financially stable partner. When you partner with Roehl, your business will serve
some of the most recognizable corporate names in America—companies that form
the backbone of our national economy.
A partner

PARTNERSHIP
FLEET CHOICES
Roehl Transport offers owner operators a wide choice of fleet options with regional and national routes.
Van Opportunities
The largest fleet in Roehl’s family with over 3,900 recent
model high-cube superwide van trailers, the van division
meets the needs of marquis shippers across the country.
Hauling a broad range of general commodities, Roehl’s dry van
fleet offers service throughout the 48 states, and to and from
the Canadian provinces. That means many no-touch loads,
industry-leading home time options and dependable revenue.
Owner Operators leased to our Van fleet average 2,500 to
2,800 miles per week.
Flatbed/specialized Opportunities
Roehl Transport operates a large flatbed and specialized fleet
with over 800 single-drop, double-drop and RGN trailers
meeting the needs of general commodity flatbed shippers
to those requiring over dimensional services. Roehl flatbed
owner operators deliver a wide range of products like steel,
aluminum, lumber, heavy machinery and bridge beams that
help build the U.S. economy.
4
Curtainside Opportunities
Roehl Transport operates one of the largest curtainside
trailer fleets in the country. We haul wood doors, roofing
materials, brick, manufactured steel products and paper on
multi-dimensional curtainside trailers. With over 200 48'
curtainside trailers, the fleet specializes in both multiple and
single drop loads. By meeting the needs of shippers of general
commodities, owner operators are cross-trained professionals,
knowledgeable in all aspects of both van and flatbed
operations. That allows shippers to maximize the flexibility of
the universal curtainside design. The result is superior service
and recurring freight— curtainside owner operators average
2,500+ miles per week.
Refrigerated Opportunities
Roehl Refrigerated hauls freight like cheese and other frozen
products (very little produce) for a reliable customer base
using over 300 refrigerated trailers.
Owner Operators leased to Roehl Refrigerated are offered
consistent weekly miles and are compensated using practical
route miles (unlike most other refrigerated carriers) and an
industry-leading mileage rate.
Roehl helps owner operators develop a sound business plan for success and then supports
that plan with the resources of one of the nation’s leading trucking operations.
COMPENSATION
Van, Curtainside, Refrigerated
Flatbed
Roehl offers a mileage compensation plan
to Van, Refrigerated and Curtainside Owner
Operators based on a sliding mileage scale
rate paid on practical route miles. Practical
miles can add thousands of dollars to your
compensation because you are paid for more
of the miles you actually drive.
Roehl Flatbed Owner Operators decide which
compensation plan is best for their business a percentage of revenue or a sliding mileage
scale rate plan.
