Business Property Tax Relief Passes both Houses A broad based coalition comprised of 46 chamber of commerce and other business groups in Arizona have been successful in securing both House and Senate approval for SB1095, which allows for a reduction in Arizona’s high business property tax assessment ratio from 5 to 20 percent over a 10-year period. The measure received wide support in both legislative branches during recent budget negotiations and is a major step forward in making Arizona more competitive nationally for job growth. The measure also minimizes the effect the reduction would have on cities’ and schools’ bonding authority and is regarded as a major win for business communities across the state. Arizona’s current 25-percent business property tax assessment ration (third highest in United States) is often listed as a major impediment to business relocation and expansion in our state. The business coalition believes that lowering the assessment ratio is the most effective and direct way to positively impact economic development in Arizona. This approach to business tax reduction also enjoys the benefit of fairly distributing tax relief to all business property taxpayers, regardless of size, sector or location. Wickenburg Way, Wickenburg • (928) 684-5436 8-6 Mon-Fri 8-3 Saturday www.brommautogroup.com Is Wickenburg next? By Kevin Cloe Sun Publisher/Editor A crowd of about 250 chanting residents armed with yellow placards might have put Wickenburg on a national television program. Two producers from the national program Town Haul on The Learning Channel visited Wickenburg last week to determine if the community would qualify to be their next project. With about a 24-hour notice, community leaders scrambled to create a western welcome in an attempt to convince the producers to select Wickenburg. That decision will be announced as early as today (Wednesday, March 23) but no later than Friday (March 25). The approximate 250 local residents gathered at Rancho del los Caballeros to greet the producers and confronted the Town Haul representatives with yellow placards that read, “Do Wickenburg Next.” At every opportunity, the residents would break into a chant of “Do Wickenburg Next … Do Wickenburg Next … Do Wickenburg Next.” The Town Haul program, which airs on Saturday nights on The Learning Channel, features a construction or renovation project the community needs. Town Haul provides all the capital funding and the leadership, and the community provides the free labor – for about a one-month period. Each project consists of six one-hour episodes. Wickenburg reportedly is one of the final two communities selected from Arizona that will provide a western atmosphere for the next TV production. Cottonwood, reportedly, is the other community. Executive Producer Craig Shepherd told the Wickenburg audience last week that a decision probably would be made by the end of this week (March 25). He also reported that the community selected will need to prepare for about 60 staff members of the TV show who live in the town during the set-up and production the program over the period of about two months. “If your community is selected, it would be like winning the lottery,” Shepherd noted. He explained that the show’s staff would need to secure production office space in the community for 10 to 12 weeks. “There are some good things and some bad things about us coming to town,” the executive producer said. “One of the bad things is that we are from New York; we talk fast; we work real fast; and we want to get things done in four days.” Actually, he noted, if the crew comes to Wickenburg, there will be about 24 days of filming. He said the TV show hires local contractors, electricians, plumbers, painters and artists to complete the selected project. “Keep in mind,” Shepherd added, “about 700 hours will be filmed … but we’ll only use five (hours). So don’t expect to be in the televised show just because you were filmed while volunteering. The more you volunteer, though, the better the odds of appearing in the show.” After answering about a dozen questions from the audience and fending off several waves of “Do Wickenburg Next” chants, Shepherd asked for any final questions. He was immediately approached by 3-year-old Emersyn Forbrook, who simply handed him a yellow placard that reminded him to “Do Wickenburg Next.” “Go home and feel good about yourselves,” the producer finally told the audience. “You’ll hear from us in about a week.” TIP OF THE STETSON TO THE DESERT CABALLEROS! The 59th Annual Ride takes off from historic Frontier Street on Monday, April 18th at 12 Noon. Over 225 cowboys will leave for the five day ride into our surrounding desert. It’s an impressive site to see the riders leave town carrying the American and Arizona State flags, along with their various camp flags. The prestigious “Silver Spur” and “Keep Wickenburg Western” awards will be presented during the ceremony. Photo by Kevin Cloe About 250 Wickenburg residents armed with yellow placards and chanting “Do Wickenburg Next” greeted two producers from the national television show Town Haul on The Learning Channel in an attempt to convince them to select the community for its next site of a new construction or renovation project.
