RICE MASTERS SPLASH FALL 2012, Issue 1 2013 Announcing new rice masters swimming web page ENHANCEMENTS In an effort to provide more relevant and useful information to support our Masters swimming activities, we are planning to make some changes and enhancements to the riceaquatics.com web page. Our goal is to provide a unique Rice Masters (RM) drop-down tab that will include links to a more complete calendar of future events, team records by age group, meet results, interesting stories /activities of our RM swimmers, photos and links to other USMS events. We will send out an email once the initial updates are made to the site. World Record Holder in Our Midst!!!!! As we all get in the pool each day for our workouts, few are aware that we share the lanes with a world record holder. David Guthrie joined our workouts this Spring (technically he swims for Texas Longhorn Aquatics, but we all forgive him for that) and has continued his legacy of assaults on the world breaststroke records. Most recently David broke the 100 & 200 meter LC breaststroke records at the Summer Nationals in Omaha and the 200 meter SC breaststroke record at the Woodlands meet in November in the 50-54 age group. David now owns 2 of 3 LC world records and all 3 SC records. Hopefully some of the magic will rub off on the swimmers in the lanes next to him. Good luck David for continued success and more records in 2013. RICE MASTERS SPLASH ALCATRAZ INVITATIONAL SWIM Eight RM swimmers braved the frigid September water temperatures (in the upper 50’s) of San Francisco Bay for the annual Alcatraz swim. Cyd Thomas, Cedar Baldridge, Anna Mod, Suzy Reierson, Lauri Nelson, Robert Li, Lon Cartwright, and Antoine Bertoncello ALL successfully completed the 1.25 mile swim in the Bay known for its’ strong changing water currents. Wetsuits were optional and Suzy, Cyd and Cedar decided to brave the cold water without one.. … BRRRRRRR! I would guess they don’t want to hear us complaining about the temp at the Rice pool ever again. (pictured back in the warmth of the Rice pool). 2012 WORLD GAMES In June, 5 RM swimmers participated in the FINA World Master Championships in Riccione, Italy. Cyd Thomas, Al Thomas, Colette Lanier, Elizabeth Kostiuk and Lon Cartwright all swam in the 7day event that attracted over 6,000 swimmers from around the globe. While there, they all took some additional time to take in the beautiful sights of Italy. In 2014 the World Games will be held in Montreal, Canada. We already have a few committed swimmers planning to go. Please contact Bruce Williams or Carlos Jimenez if you are interested so they can coordinate a team trip. 2012 Summer LC NATIONALS RM sent a team of 5 to the Summer LC Nationals in Omaha in July, which was held in the pool used for the US Olympic Trials just a week before the event. Vicki Blocker, Daniel Shiosaki, Carlos Jimenez, Rog Hardy and Bruce Williams all scored and medaled in individual events in what has to have been the fastest pool ever built in the US. Additionally, the men placed fourth in both the 200 Free and Medley relays. Special mention goes to Rog Hardy for swimming and placing top 10 in 6 events. RM’s combined men’s & women’s score placed them 31st out of 134 teams…..pretty nice for only 5 swimmers. Page 3 3 RICE MASTERS SPLASH Page 4 BROOKLYN BRIDGE SWIM RM swimmers traveled to New York in July to participate in the annual Brooklyn Bridge channel swim. Anna Mod, David Backus, Colette Lanier, Cedar Baldridge and Robert Li along with about 400 others swan 1K across the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, in the shadow of the famous bridge. Afterwards they enjoyed “the scene” in The Big Apple. 10 MILE SWIM !!!! Did you ever think about swimming an entire week’s worth of workouts in one straight non-stop swim? Well our own RM swimmer Mary Ruppe did in the “Minnetonka 10Mile Challenge” which was also the “USMS 9+ Mile Open Water Championship” for the year. The event took place at Excelsior Beach on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. One length of the lake is 5 miles, so swimmers in the race “just” have to complete “one lap”. This was the 26th year of the annual beach-to-beach swim that attracted 158 swimmers. Mary placed third in her age group with a time of 4:26.58 and she finished 12th overall (including men). Awesome accomplishment Mary!!! WHO KNEW???? Who knew RM had our own funny man swimming and coaching with us? Taking a quote from the FreePress Houston…”VICTORY! The battlefield, commonly referred to as “Houston’s Comedy scene”, is freshly littered with the destroyed entrails of his opponents… and now, Matthew Broussard, is all alone. Newly crowned “Houston’s Funniest Person Contest” winner, Broussard stands with some of Houston’s finest comedians.” He won the 2012 competition on his oneyear anniversary of his first open mic performance. Matt is now making frequent appearances on the comedy scene around the state. Well we decided to start tracking and keeping history of RM team records by age group and event. Attached are preliminary lists for both the men and women. And if you notice, there some gaps where we have an event that no one has swum in a USMS sanctioned meet for Rice for a time…….so it may be your opportunity to make the record books, even if it is only for RM. SEE THE ATTACHED FILES INCLUDED WITH THIS EMAIL. Contact Bruce Williams if you have any changes to the RICE MASTERS TEAM RECORDS at [email protected]
