We would also like to inform you of a few minor policy changes. We really want to spruce up the school’s spirit by adding in a few fun quirks! In honour of throwback Thursday, once a week, instead of detentions, we will be implementing the guillotine! You’re welcome Mr. Salkeld and Mr. Hoteit! We think Tuesdays are already pretty sweet, so we won’t be changing anything there. Obviously, for Wednesday, there is one main thing that everyone despises; yup, you guessed it. We will be removing the first “d” from Wednesday! What is it doing there? What does it want? Is it just watching and waiting to pounce after centuries of quiet observation? Not under our watch. It consists of many aspects that we require in order to live a happy and healthy life, or live at all, for that matter. It gives us the air we breathe, the water we drink, the ground we run on. Yet, it seems to have dropped to the wayside on the global list of importance. Globally, the environment isn't as appreciated as it should be, but here at Lower Canada College, we do our best to ensure the health and appreciation of our environment, because we do understand just how important it is. We actually have an entire week of school dedicated to the environment. It is a week filled with activities and initiatives that increase awareness about the problems with our environment and how we can all change in order to help our planet. The first activity the LCC community partakes in is “Lights Out!”. It is an activity that requires every classroom in the school to turn off their lights for 10 minutes. RECAP Although it doesn't sound like much, doing this actually saves an incredible amount of energy and money, and if every school did this for 10 minutes every day, it would truly make a difference. Another small activity our school has is the signing of the Earth flag. While this doesn't do anything directly linked to saving the environment, it is a great way to raise awareness of the issues at hand and encourage people to take initiative and get involved in the health of our planet. Personally, I think the “we are silent” campaign, though it is not directly related to saving our planet, is easily the most inspiring. It is an activity where people can sign up and pledge to stay silent (no forms of communication whatsoever) for the entire day. This initiative is to raise awareness of the animals that don’t have a voice to speak for themselves. To top it all off, a vegetarian food sale is available to all students for great prices. Though it would be extremely difficult to convince everyone to become a vegetarian, little activities like this raise awareness on the subject and allow people to explore their “vegan side.” “I think it’s a great thing,” says grade 11 student Max Shafter. “Doing what’s important for the environment is something that needs to be addressed more often.” Initiatives like these are very important and should matter a great deal to all of us. I know it’s hard to be very worried about our planet right now, as many of the negative aspects on the earth we are trying to prevent might not really become extremely serious until after we are long gone. There just isn't enough urgency. That being said, let the beauty of our planet be your inspiration. There shouldn't have to be a detrimental reason to eat well and keep our planet clean. As a school, we must continue to raise awareness on this important cause and let it continue to be one of our top priorities. Why? Because it’s our home. LOWER CANADA COLLEGE 7 LOWER CANADA COLLEGE LOWER CANADA COLLEGE DQ CONFERENCE BY BIANCA COLETTA RECAP coversforfb.com A SURGE IN CANADIAN MUSIC By William Aziz Special thanks to: Ms. Leiter M. Soret Mr. Peotto Equally, a big thank you to every other member on the staff and facility for their contribution and for such a great job on making the Destiny Quebec conference run smoothly. We would also like to thank everyone on the executive and committee for their amazing ideas and contribution to this year’s conference. 8 MAY 10, 2016 Throughout the year, the Destiny Quebec executive and committee worked diligently to make this year’s conference a success. Our executive and committee were absolutely wonderful and very talented in their ideas, and certainly limitless in their sense of humour, which characterized many of our meetings. I must say that the process was a very memorable one and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. This year’s conference concentrated on The Future of our Planet: The Innovations and Initiatives Shaping Humanity. We began our conference with the very talented co-host of the Discovery Chanel’s Daily Planet, Zia Tong, who presented an overview of 2015’s scientific innovations. Along with mentioning the wonderful inventions that are on the horizon, such as a 3D printer that can construct housing and a machine that can recycle all your recyclables in to things that you can make at home, such as tools, she reminded us of the repercussions they may have on our planet. I was largely impressed by everyone’s curiosity about the subject, through their thoughtprovoking questions. After our first keynote speaker, our delegates separated to attend their first chosen seminar. They had the pleasure in choosing, in advance, topics where professionals were brought in to discuss the innovations and initiatives in that specific area. The seminars they were able to chose from were: Health, Science and Technology, Energy, Economics and E-commerce. Next, there was a short break, followed by the delegates’ second choice of seminar, and, later on, a lunch break giving everyone the time to relax and interact with their peers. We ended off the day with a fantastic, eye-opening presentation by the Minister of Transport and former Canadian astronaut, Marc Garneau. He took us through the steps of an astronaut being laughed into space and the experiences he had while being up there, such as playing cards with Russian astronauts. He shared pictures of Earth, which he took from space and they were absolutely beautiful! He also showed us the negative impact humanity is having on our planet, through a number of less appealing pictures taken from space; these included photos of countries, such as China, India and Italy, countries that are covered in smog. In all, I found that the conference went very well. I found every speaker’s presentations were very interesting and I’m certainly intrigued with what the future has in store for us. I have to admit that I am also a little apprehensive, because we so often focus on the negative possibilities, such as the end of the human race due to global warming or the domination of artificial intelligence, things straight out of a sci-fi movie. On a positive note, it was absolutely wonderful to witness all of our hard work finally coming into play, and I loved seeing everyone’s interest in the topic! I really do hope everyone enjoyed the conference!! This past year, something unbelievable happened in the name of Canadian Music. During the month of October, Canadian artists held half of the top 10 hot singles on the Billboard charts in the United States. What’s even more impressive is that of these top 10 spots, Canadian artists brought home the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots! At No. 3, Drake released his track labeled “Hotline Bling,” which became an automatic sensation. At No. 2 was Justin Bieber’s track “What Do You Mean,” which actually held the No. 1 spot for an entire week until being replaced by another Canadian Artist, The Weeknd, who has become one of my favorite artists today. His track, “The Hills,” is another great track that introduced us to how silky smooth the Weeknd’s upcoming album Beauty Behind the Madness will be. What is even crazier about this particular Billboard chart is that The Weeknd, Drake and Justin Bieber are all artists specifically from Ontario. This province of less than 14 million people is releasing more popular songs than a country, such as the United States, with its population of 320 million. So, where did this surge in Canadian artists come from? Drake’s record label, OVO, has certainly helped put Canadian music on the map, and, even more specifically, has put Ontario hip-hop artists on the map. Two Ontario rappers have released their mix tapes in the past couple of months. Jazz Cartier released his anticipated album Hotel Paranoia that has met all of its expectations, and another Ontario rapper, Tory Lanez, released two very popular songs this year alone that both reached the top 100 in hip hop Billboards charts in the United States. This surge in Canadian music is seemingly here to stay. Drake is set to release his new album on April 29th and his first couple of tracks has so far been worth the wait. Views from the 6 will continue to add to the overwhelming collection of talented Canadian artists. Within Drake’s album, there will surely be other Canadian artists to back him up in completing one of the most hyped albums of the year. We will see if Drake is able to live up to his reputation and continue his major success in 2016. I believe that the album will be a hit and Canadian artists will continue to thrive and contribute overwhelmingly to the music scene. addisinsight.com stereogum.com rapbasement.com LOWER CANADA COLLEGE 9 LOWER CANADA COLLEGE EMPIRE LOWER CANADA COLLEGE MOVIE STATE OF BY EMMA BELHADFA MUSIC I photo creds to Chris Ubhi & Mr. Cox can still remember feeling the sun on my face, a welcome sensation after a seven-hour bus ride. I can recall standing in the middle of Manhattan, my mouth wide open in awe as the tall buildings stood proudly around me. But, most of all, I can picture the large smiles covering the faces of my classmates, grins that didn’t leave a single person’s face for the length of the trip. When Mr. Cox and Mr. Cheyne announced the annual band trip would be in New York back in October, I never imagined just how much fun it would be. Along with about 60 other members of Senior Band, I had the privilege of visiting the Big Apple in mid-April. 10 MAY 10, 2016 There, we performed a total of seven pieces of music we had been practicing for months at two venues. Although playing was the main purpose of our voyage, we also watched a hilarious Broadway rendition of the age-old tale of “Aladdin,” toured the famous museums, strolled around Central Park and even had the luck of seeing the New York Philharmonic perform at the iconic Lincoln Center. But even if we had all of these amazing opportunities, the moments I will remember forever were the ones that weren’t planned. I will never f orget running through the busy streets of the city that never sleeps as we rushed to make it to the symphony on time. I will always remember how much fun we had dancing and singing at the jazz club. I will cherish the friends I made for the rest of my high school career, because this trip not only let us grow as musicians, but as people too. I was given the chance to befriend students I would not normally see at school and I was lucky enough to forge bonds of friendship that will hopefully withstand the unpredictable future. And that is something for which I will forever be infinitely grateful. techinsider.io space.ca en.wikipedia.org The two crazy box office hits that everyone seems to be talking about are Dead pool and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Deadpool has to be one of the better movies I’ve seen this year, and, for sure, the best comedy I’ve seen in a while. Deadpool showcases some BY OLIVER PALEVSKY outstanding acting talent and a great plot. However, Deadpool was a very vulgar movie, and I do not recommend it to anyone under the age of 14. With that being said, it was everything you could possibly want in a movie; it was funny, it was full of action and it had a great storyline. Deadpool follows the life of retired Special Forces operative Wade Wilson. Wilson has been diagnosed with severe cancer and hasn’t been given much time to live. After hearing the news, he and his wife are devastated since they had just met and their life together was only beginning. After an encounter with a strange man at a strange bar, Wilson discovers that there might be a way to save himself. Introduce Deadpool, the vigilante whom Wilson has turned into due to what was done to his body to save him from dying. However, this process comes with a price. Wilson’s body is completely destroyed and he looks absolutely disgusting. Furious, Wilson goes hunting for his creator to help reverse what has been done to him. This plot may be a little too much to handle, but trust me; this actionpacked thriller is something that you don’t want to miss out on. My final verdict is that Deadpool is a must-see, and I recommend it to audiences aged 14 and over. For everybody who loves superhero movies and loves comedy, this movie is the perfect fit for you, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Batman v Superman, on the other hand, is a film, which I think is heading right for a DVD release. This film was terrible, lacking a decent storyline needed to take it to the next level. Indeed, I would say that this has to be one of the saddest attempts at a superhero movie since Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. It lacked credible acting, solid directing, and most importantly, an interesting storyline. However, the one thing this movie delivered was action and a whole lot of it. The acting was very sub par in this film; I was very skeptical when I saw Jesse Eisenberg cast as the villain. I was right to feel this way because he was awful. I mean how could a five foot six 100 pound man come across as a scary villain? I’m a huge fan of Jesse Eisenberg but I knew this role just wasn’t meant for him. Someone whom I’m just not so fond of is the director Zach Snyder. I never really enjoyed any of his work prior to this film. And I can still say that I don’t like any movie he’s been a part of. Snyder has a particular way of making films, and when he was slated as the director, I knew this film never even stood a chance. All in all, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was a bust, and I do not recommend anybody waste their time on this film. This movie was plagued netflixlife.com from the beginning and never even showed any potential. screenrant.com lmsentertainments.co.uk LOWER CANADA COLLEGE 11 LOWER CANADA COLLEGE LOWER CANADA COLLEGE Buried Voices: The Browbeaten Aboriginal People of Canada BY KAMEEL KHAN T o date, there are 3,100 Native American reserves across Canada, home to hundreds of thousands of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit persons. However, names like Kahnawake and Attawapiskat are of little significance to most city dwellers except to those few people who make occasional trips to the communities to buy tax-free cigarettes or fireworks. The fact that we know so little about native culture, livelihood or reserves hints at an alarming flaw in our academic curriculum. This widespread ignorance dating way back to the 17th century, if not before, has also been the cause of major problems for the aboriginal people. However, native reserves have started garnering more attention in national news during the last decade than ever before, but it isn’t a good thing. Most of the stories emerging from these communities deal with poverty, substance abuse, suicide, unemployment and mortality, five terms that have become synonymous with life on the reserves. 12 MAY 10, 2016 cbc.ca cbc.ca tes.com First, let’s debunk some popular misconceptions regarding First Nations reserves and their inhabitants. By doing this, we will finally be able to look at our country with new eyes, only to see that while they may have immunity from federal prosecution, the people of these godforsaken fencedoff societies certainly aren’t immune to the ramifications of the twisted system, rigged against them. First on the list is the Indian Act of 1876. This statute created plots of land called “reserves” for the Aboriginal peoples to live on and to continue their cultural and religious practices, undisturbed. This seems inclusive, right? Wrong. It was enacted under the notion that it would be sufficient compensation for the torment that they suffered at the hands of the colonialists. But genocide and exploitation of their resources in return for a portion of the land, which was theirs to begin with, hardly feels like a fair trade. Natives don’t even have control over their own reserve related affairs, like the right to privately own property. Their economic possibilities are limited because many of the reserves are located in remote rural areas, far from workplaces in the city. There are job openings in the mining and agricultural industries close to the reserves, but their main source of income is transfers from the federal government. People are therefore forced to choose between leaving the reserve and sacrificing their Indian status, or accepting the presence of a glass ceiling and inhumane living conditions. What a crafty mechanism of assimilation. One annoying myth that perpetuates hatred towards indigenous persons is that they don’t pay taxes and university is free for them. Actually, tax exemption only exists in extremely special cases and is not available to non-status Indians, Métis or Inuit peoples. So, status Indians who live and work off the reserves pay federal and provincial taxes just like the rest of us. Sadly, the education funds that are distributed to First Nations youth don’t match the number of applicants and according to Canada’s auditor general, who oversees the federal government’s operations, "The education gap between First Nations living on reserves and the general Canadian population has widened.” There is also the assumption that Status Indians (I still can’t fathom how “Indian” is still a legal term) can get away with their crimes because the regular justice system doesn’t apply to them. To an extent this is true because crime on the reserve falls under the jurisdiction of tribal courts that are notorious for favoring their own people. Given the situation where the son of a tribal chief was in custody, the tribal officer might opt for taking no action at all; otherwise it might jeopardize his career. Facts like these cause us to hone our vision onto petty concerns, while the much more dire issues drift farther and farther away from our periphery. Problems like the Housing Crisis in the Ontario reserve of Attawapiskat fly right over our heads without making any noise. Even worse than the overcrowded wooden shacks, with poor waste management and insulation, are the raging suicide epidemics. Two weeks ago in Attawapiskat, eleven people attempted suicide in one night. And listen to this. 100 suicide attempts have been made in the last seven months. There are only 1,500 people on the reserve. A 2014 report from the RCMP listed more than 1000 missing aboriginal women in Canada, most of whom were mothers. It is speculated that these were murders. Nearly half of the murder cases in the Native Women’s Association of Canada’s database are still unsolved, and only 53 per cent of these cases resulted in a criminal being indicted for their actions. Statistics also show that “aboriginal women are almost three times more likely to be killed by a stranger than nonAboriginal woman are.” This is evidence that the prevailing intergenerational trauma is solely based on racism. Why are we so oblivious to the prejudices and atrocities happening right in our own backyards? Why had I never even heard of residential schools that abused Native American kids for 140 years, before doing my own research? Why don’t aboriginal women have a hashtag (#) like the international “Bring Back our Girls” movement made for the 300 Nigerian girls who were abducted by Boko Haram? A lot of it has to do with the miniscule amounts of media coverage done on aboriginal issues. Less than half of a percent of all news stories are focused around aboriginal people. The majority of viewers feel uncomfortable in the face of reality, or they lack interest in these issues, so news networks have fewer reasons to mention them. Even as the coverage related to protests and talks between indigenous people and the government become more frequent, the number of stories with a negative tone proportionally increases. These stories may include criticism of substance abuse, painting all natives to be drug addicts, or comment on the rising Aboriginal prisoner population, making them all sound like criminals. My hope is that Prime Minister Trudeau will prioritize the restructuring of these impoverished communities, as well as shed light on these suffering tribes; he has already demonstrated his support for indigenous communities in various press conferences. We must also eradicate the racist stereotypes by expanding our school’s curriculum concerning aboriginals, so that the new generation becomes more knowledgeable and tolerant of different cultures. Lastly, journalism schools must actively try to create more opportunities for natives to work as reporters or columnists, to promote non-biased media coverage. The time has come for us to wake up. It’s no conspiracy that social injustice is happening under our noses. We just have to be brave enough to look at it. LOWER CANADA COLLEGE 13 LOWER CANADA COLLEGE LOWER CANADA COLLEGE SPORTS WILL SCHOOLS BY JUDD GARFIELD ? BAN CONTACT SPORTS Participating in sports as a child is very important. It promotes a healthy lifestyle, and improves both happiness and social skills as it brings people together. Indeed, sports are great, but like most things, there is always some cause for basecracker.com concern, especially in contact sports. Head trauma and other injuries can be some of the effects of partaking in these collision sports. It is an issue that only now has started to become very apparent in the news with stories about professional athletes suffering from these problems, particularly post-career. Parents are questioning their child’s safety and whether it’s worth it to enroll their children in contact sports, given all the risks. With all this new information about how contact sports are leaving lasting effects on kids, it’s only a matter of time until all schools are going to ban contact sports in order to protect the health and safety of their students. This issue has only recently 14 MAY 10, 2016 become more obvious because of all the new evidence showing that long-term contact sports careers can lead to head trauma, particularly Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE for short), which has plagued many athletes, postcareer. Explained well in the film Concussion, neuropathologist Bennet Omalu proves that playing contact sports (notably football, in this case) for extensive periods of time can induce CTE, which is a life threating disease affecting behavior and emotions. Dr. Omalu’s findings resulted in him claiming that there skysports.com should be a ban on football, hockey, and soccer for children under the age of 18. Although many people would agree that contact sports are very dangerous to developing students, there are also many people who believe contact and collision sports have more benefits, which outweigh the risks. There are benefits that people believe contact sports offer that non-contact sports cannot. “Collision sports teach kids a lot, and they benefit from the group/team interaction, and skills forums.myfantasyleague.com development. These are essential learning opportunities for life.” (Dr. Charles Tator). Playing these contact sports also encourages risk-taking, and humans are naturally hardwired to be inclined to take at least some risks. Most schools have always encouraged their student body to participate in sports, without necessarily factoring in the risks. Between 2001 and 2005, 250,000 students aged 8 to19 were sent to the hospital for head-related injuries in contact sports. A common problem, specifically in male-dominated sports, was the fear of being benched. Many student athletes have lied about their condition after taking hits to avoid being benched and in order to keep playing. There have been many related incidents with this and, in extreme cases, there has been a reported four deaths from students continuing to play even after taking a blow to the head and never seeking any medical attention. Part of this is because of the nature of these contact sports. The kids think they are supposed to get hurt, and that it’s part of the game, but, they don’t realize they are really hurting themselves. There was a lot of hype surrounding this year’s tournament and it definitely lived up to the expectations. What makes March Madness so exciting is that you can expect the unexpected. No matter which seed team is playing, and no matter how much time is left on the clock, March Madness never fails to deliver a great show. The Upsets: This year’s tournament had its fair share of upsets. One of the biggest upsets that ruined more than 50 per cent of March Madness brackets was No. 15-seeded Middle Tennessee defeating No. 2-seeded Michigan State 90-8. A 15-seeded team has only beaten a 2-seeded team eight times in tournament history before this particular game. The final game between No. 2-seeded Villanova facing off against No. 1-seeded UNC was one of the most exciting games of the tournament. Watching top-seeded teams play, you are guaranteed to get a good show, and this was certainly the case here. With the score being close for most of the game, every play was thrilling to watch, knowing that just one play could change the outcome of the entire game. This game, in particular, had one of the craziest endings, with Marcus Paige hitting an incredible game-tying three with four seconds left on the clock, and then Kris Jenkins of Villanova hitting the game-winning buzzer beater in those last four seconds. This year, March madness definitely lived up to the hype. I can’t wait for next year’s tournament! As time goes on, new evidence continues to come out, showing how dangerous these sports really are to adolescents, especially because their brains are not fully developed yet. Early retirements from pro-athletes like Chris Borland and D'Brickashaw Ferguson have also encouraged kids and opened their eyes to the real dangers of these sports. It may well be only a matter of time until all impact sports are removed from school programmes. The exhibition showcases mosaics, frescoes, and statues, as well as utensils and everyday items with common uses, immersing you into the rich lifestyle of this bustling trade town of the Roman Empire. The exhibition brings to light many elements of Roman culture and reaches its climax with a recreation of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius that covered the town under metres of ash, freezing it in time. Here is a taste of what awaits you beyond the main hall... LOWER CANADA COLLEGE One of the most remarkable artefacts to survive is this statue. It is one of a set of five statues called the danzatrici (dancers) placed in niches around the pool in the garden of a Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, each making a different gesture. This particular statue is of a young woman adjusting her peplos, with apparel reminiscent of the early Greek trends, indicating the reverence with which the Romans regarded Greek culture. This interest can be seen through a large portion of the art found in Pompeii. It was common for houses in Pompeii to have gardens. They were like small havens, isolated from the bustling streets, and a peristyle garden (garden with a colonnade) became the ultimate symbol of high status. Large frescoes decorated the walls, statues infused life into the space and fountains streamed water into pools. The combination of architecture and the arts of landscape, painting and waterworks gave the homes an illusion of nature indoors and a sense of luxury, imitating an oasis. mmfapompeii.com mmfapompeii.com A statue of Bacchus, the god of fertility and wine, was well known throughout the Roman Empire for his cult’s wild rituals, entailing great extents of drunkenness and promiscuity, problematic enough to prompt the roman senate to ban the worship of Bacchus in 186 BCE, although it did not seem to stop the cult’s rise in popularity, which majorly depended on the value of wine. until they reached a marriageable age. In Roman culture, it was rather popular for people to flaunt their wealth and status. One way was by showing off extensive collections of silverware in their villas. Many have been found, surrounded by jewellery and coins, carefully wrapped and stowed away in cloth, denoting the importance of silverware. The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time B ased on the beloved novel by Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTime follows the story of 15-year old Christopher, who is a genius-level boy with autism. The plot of the play follows his search to find out who killed his neighbour’s dog, but the true marvel of the play that makes it such a gem lies beyond the basic storyline. While the novel did an excellent job of describing Christopher’s daily life, I dare say that the musical takes this concept above and beyond, as it literally transports the audience into the mind of Christopher. Suddenly, the audience is given a sense of just how difficult day-to-day social interactions can be for an ayoungertheatre.com en.wikipedia.org autistic boy like Christopher, and the lighting and clever staging simply add to the immersive experience. Tell them why you want to stay out later and explain why you think you’re responsible enough to do so. Ask your parents nicely to disclose their motives as well. Try striking deals as well, such as “I’ll improve my marks if you let me stay out.” Remember, no matter what, be polite and rational and try not to do anything brash. Teachers are well meaning and they are there to help you, so don’t be afraid to speak to them about what’s bothering you. I’m sure they will take it very kindly. You can even speak to your advisor first, if you have any worries. If, for whatever reason, you would rather not discuss the problem and plan on sticking it out for the rest of the school year (even though you find class boring or the like), the alternative is reading your textbook and diligently studying on your own or in a small study group to help keep your grades up.
