WELCOME: INTERCONTINENTAL CUP
I would like to welcome you to the first edition of the re–launched
Intercontinental Cup between the Turkish Airlines Euroleague's
reigning champions, Olympiacos Piraeus from Greece, and the 2013
FIBA Americas League winner Pinheiros Sky of Sao Paulo.
It has been 17 years since the last edition of the
Intercontinental Cup was held and we are
really pleased to resume this project with FIBA
Americas and FIBA by gathering the basketball
family together again for this important event in
Brazil.
Since the foundation of Euroleague Basketball,
it has been our goal to spread European
basketball to the biggest number of countries
and fans possible, both in Europe and abroad.
In 2007, we started to bring our teams to new
countries outside Europe by visiting China with
CSKA Moscow and Benetton Treviso. In 2009,
we began our collaboration with the NBA by
sending Euroleague Basketball teams to the
United States. This year, we are visiting all
those places again and also Brazil for the first
time, thus putting European basketball on a
truly global stage.
We are really happy to have this opportunity to
show fans in the Americas a style of basketball that I am sure they
will enjoy, and at the same time be part of an event that increases
the awareness of our sport, which is already experiencing great
growth in the region.
I would like to thank FIBA and FIBA Americas for their commitment
to this project, as I am certain that in the near future, the Intercontinental Cup will be seen by everyone as a very important worldwide
sporting event.
I would also like to thank the two continental champions, Olympiacos Piraeus and Pinheiros Sky of Sao Paulo, for the great show that
they are certain to bring us on the court.

Eu gostaria de te desejar as boas-vindas para a primeira edição do
relançamento da Copa Intercontinental, competição que une o
campeão da Turkish Airlines Euroliga, Olympiacos Piraeus, da
Grécia, e o vencedor da Liga das Américas 2013, Pinheiros/SKY, de
São Paulo.
Foram 17 anos desde a última edição da Copa
Intercontinental e estamos muito orgulhosos em
poder reiniciar esse projeto com a FIBA e FIBA
Américas e reunir a família do basquete
novamente para esse importante evento no
Brasil.
Desde a fundação da Euroliga, nosso objetivo
sempre foi de espalhar o basquete europeu para
um maior número de países e fãs possíveis, tanto
na Europa quanto no mundo. Em 2007, começamos a levar nossos times para novos países fora
da Europa, iniciando na China com o CSKA
Moscow e o Benetton Treviso. Em 2009, demos
início a nossa parceria com a NBA enviando os
clubes da Euroliga para os Estados Unidos. Este
ano, estamos visitando esses paíse novamente e,
pela primeira vez, chegamos ao Brasil, assim,
colocando o basquete europeu num verdadeiro
estágio global.
Nós estamos realmente felizes com essa oportunidade de mostrar
aos fãs das Américas nosso estilo de jogar basquete, que, tenho
certeza, vocês vão adorar e, ao mesmo tempo, fazer parte de um
evento que aumenta grandiosamente a divulgação de nossa modalidade.
Gostaria de agradecer a FIBA e a FIBA Américas pelo comprometimento nesse projeto e tenho certeza que a Copa Intercontinental
será vista por todos como um dos maiores eventos esportivos de

The FIBA, FIBA Americas and Euroleague Intercontinental Cup is a
reality. We want to thank you for your presence in this important event.
A Copa Intercontinental FIBA, FIBA Américas e Euroliga é uma
realidade. Queremos agradecer sua presença neste tão importante
evento.
Forty-seven years have passed since the first time that this competition between championship clubs took place. America has had great
moments in these events, like the now so appropriate world championship of EC Sirius in 1979
and Argentina's Obras Sanitarias Championship
in 1983. In short, this is a platform of major global
basketball glories and now it returns and hosted
by our continent.
This is the result of great work done by countless
people and organizations to raise Americas'
professional basketball and without them this
would not be possible. It is important to thank the
South American Basketball Association (
ABASU ) for the success of the South American
League , since this success is a result of their
unparalleled effort to internationalize competition between clubs. Helped by the tradition of the
South American Legaue, the Americas League
represents a huge step in the massification of
our sport and its strengthening has made this
Intercontinental Cup possible.
Quarenta e sete anos têm passado desde a primeira vez em que se
celebrou este enfrentamento de clubes
campeões. América tem tido grandes momentos,
como o tão apropriado campeonato mundial de
E.C. Sírio em 1979 e o de Obras Sanitárias de
Argentina em 1983. Em fim, tem sido um palco de
importantes glórias para o basquete mundial e
regressa precisamente a nosso continente.

They represent the essence of our growth as
they are the most important workshop for
countries in the development of future stars and are responsible for
keeping alive the flame of basketball nationwide. There is nothing
more to add than thank you to our national leagues .

dito presente desde o começo. E é que nelas está
a essência de nosso porvir, pois são a oficina mais
importante que têm os países no desenvolvimento
de futuras estrelas e são responsáveis por manter viva a chama do

This past July we had a historic meeting of the Americas League in
Venezuela looking to further develop this, our flagship club competition on the continent, and we had representation of managers,
coaches, players , journalists and everybody involved in the growth of
the tournament. It was an unprecedented gathering in which we all
came to the same conclusion: the Americas League is a competition
of great importance and we must defend it as the finest international
professional basketball in America.

passo importante, entrando já na vitrina mundial e enfrentando ao
campeão duma competição da envergadura da Euroliga.
Em nome de FIBA Américas, só fica lhes dizer que desfrutem ao

That is confirmed this weekend when we take another monumental
step, now entering a global showcase and facing the champion of a
league on the magnitude of the Euroleague .

First of all , I want to welcome you to this 2013 FIBA, FIBA Americas
and Euroleague Intercontinental Cup. This is a big weekend for world
basketball and you will be part of history in witnessing these two
games between the host Pinheiros / Sky and the Greek club Olympiacos Piraeus.
Antes de tudo, lhe quero dar as boas-vindas nesta CopaIntercontinental FIBA, FIBA Américas e Euroliga. É um grande fim de semana
para o basquete e vocês serão parte da história ao presenciar os dois
jogos entre o anfitrião Pinheiros/Sky e o clube grego Olympiacos
Piraeus.
Seven years ago, in 2006, in my beginnings as
Secretary General of FIBA Americas, I
confessed to a reporter that my dream was to
have an Americas League and we all worked
very hard to achieve what the following year
became the first edition of a continental league
that required a lot of sacrifice and commitment
and that meant bringing together 16 of the best
clubs in America on the same stage. The result
was magnificent.
Faz sete anos, no 2006, em meus começos como
Secretário Geral de FIBA Américas pronunciei a
um jornalista que meu sonho era ter uma Liga das
Américas. E trabalhamos todos muito duro para
conseguir o que ao ano seguinte se converteu
numa primeira edição duma liga continental
queprecisou de muito sacrifício e entrega e que
significou reunir a 16 dos melhores clubes de
América no mesmo palco. O resultado foi magnífico.
Sure, what we did was expand the traditional
South American League to include major
markets in our sport, those of North, Central
America and the Caribbean, in order to create
added value to national leagues on our
continent, but it was key and it opened a world
of possibilities. We saw the development that
brought to our sport the exchange between
clubs from different countries and thus the
growth in the different national leagues, that in
end represent the base of basketball in each
country.
Claro, o que conseguimos foi expandir a já tradicional Liga Sudamericana para incluir a grandes
mercados de nosso esporte, que pertencem ao
Norte, Centroamérica e o Caraíbas, com o fim de
criar um valoracrescentado às concorrências
nacionais de nosso continente. E assim foi. Vimos
o desenvolvimento que trouxe o intercâmbio entre
clubes dos diferentes países e com isso o crescimento de nosso esporte no que eu pessoalmente
considero a base do basquete nacional.

Already six continental champions in our history, we have witnessed
a growing parity in an Americas League that has had surprising
results in all instances, with clubs in Ecuador defeating Brazilian
teams, as Mavort did against Flamengo in 2013, Mexican teams
getting the biggest glory, as it was with the Pioneros de Cancun
winning the title in Argentina against two Argentinean clubs , and
above all a club like Pinheiros / Sky that against all odds won the
continental championship this past season in Puerto Rico.
Já com seis campeões continentais em nossa
história, temos sido testemunhas duma paridade
em aumento, numa Liga das Américas que tem tido resultados
sorpresivos em todas suas instâncias, com clubes de Equadorderrotando times brasileiros, como o foi Mavort a Flamengo no 2013, com
times mexicanos obtendo glória, como o foi Pioneiros de Cancún lhe
ganhando o titulo em Argentina a dois clubes argentinos, e acima de
todo um clube como Pinheiros/Sky que contra todos os prognósticos
conseguiu o campeonato continental a passada temporada em Porto
Rico.
Pinheiros is precisely why we are here . It takes fellow dreamers to
achieve dreams. After being crowned Champion of America in 2013 ,
this club of 114 years of sporting tradition wanted to go for more.
With an already a strengthened Americas League , and several
years of advanced talks with the Euroleague , the highest club
competition in Europe, this year we realized the return of the
Intercontinental Cup .
É precisamente por Pinheiros que estamos cá. Faz falta companheiros sonhadores para conseguir sonhos. Depois de coroar-se
Campeão de América no 2013, este clube de 114 anos de tradição
esportiva quis ir por mais. Já com uma Liga das Américas fortalecida,
e vários anos de conversas avançadas com a Euroliga, máxima
concorrência de clubes de Europa, neste ano pudemos especificar o
regresso da Copa Intercontinental de Clubes.
It is true that these two games mean that the best of both continents
will face each other, in what will be a great show for our sport at the
highest level. But, especially for me and everyone that saw the birth
and growth of the Americas League, this means a lot more ... it's a

City: Barueri
Barueri is a Brazilian city in the state of São Paulo located in the
northwestern part of the Greater São Paulo metropolitan area. The
population is estimated to be 245,652, the population density is
3,509 per km² and the area of 64 km². Its boundaries are Santana de
Parnaíba to the north, Osasco in the east, Carapicuíba in the
Southeast, Jandira to the south and southwest and Itapevi the
west. The city is served by the trains of line 8 of the Companhia
Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos (literally São Paulo Metropolitan
Railway Company). Barueri means "Red flower that amazes" in a
Tupi–Guarani language. According to historians, the history of
Barueri dates back to November 11, 1560 with the establishment of
Nossa Senhora Da Escada Chapel by jesuit missionary José de
Anchieta and his further settlement. The hamlet grew to the point
of theconstruction, in 1870 of the Sorocabana Railway that
initiated its duties in 1875 turning Barueri into an important point of
connection between São Paulo, Santana de Parnaíba and
Pirapora do Bom Jesus. Still belonging to the city of Santana de
Parnaíba, Barueri was established as an independent city on
December 24, 1948 due to its growth.

Ginásio José Corrêa is an indoor sporting arena that is located in
Barueri, Brazil, São Paulo. The capacity of the arena is 5,000
people for basketball games. The arena was used for some of the
preliminary games of the 2006 FIBA World Championship for
Women.

As just the second team in 20 years to win Turkish Airlines Euroleague titles back-to-back, Olympiacos Piraeus enters the 2013-14
season with great ambition and a fully reloaded roster. Some key
players left the team but Olympiacos managed to keep its very own
superstar, three-time Turkish Airlines Euroleague champion and
Final Four MVP Vassilis Spanoulis, and added interesting new
players in almost all positions. Spanoulis will once again lead
Olympiacos on and off the court, providing his unbeatable basketball IQ, deep range, court sense and great determination. No other
Euroleague team had better defined roles than the Reds - a
pyramidal structure in which Spanoulis was at the very top of it.

reference point in the low post. Brent Petway, a former Harlem
Globetrotter, is a very explosive player ready to thrill fans with his
high-flying dunks and blocked shots. Moreover, Olympiacos adds
even more depth around the baskets with savvy, experienced big
man Dimitrios Mavroeidis and rebounding ace Cedric Simmons.
Head coach Georgios Bartzokas comes back for a second season
having managed in the first to keep a championship team's
personality and character while adding his own style - intense
defense and the ability for the team to excel at any game rhythm.
Expect Olympiacos to stay highly physical on defense and
effective on offense, making few mistakes and relying on Spanoulis when the going gets tough. Olympiacos, as always, will be

Olympiacos Piraeus: aiming to make more history
There is no time like present for Olympiacos Piraeus, who arrives
in Brazil after winning two consecutive Turkish Airlines Euroleague
titles - an accomplishment that only another team, Maccabi Tel
Aviv, can claim in more than two decades. Olympiacos managed to
showcase its best basketball at the right time, overcoming tough
situations and rallying from double-digit margins in both Euroleague title games to become a team that will be remembered
forever not only for its great success, but for its fighting spirit and
ability to never, ever give up.
Founded in 1931, Olympiacos won just four Greek League titles
through its first six decades. Then, everything changed in the
1990s, when head coach Ioannis Ioannidis and Olympiacos quickly
matched that previous collection with four more between 1993 and
1996. In addition, the Reds burst onto the international stage by
becoming Euroleague finalists in both 1994 and 1995, although
losing the trophy both times to Spanish teams Joventut and Real
Madrid, respectively. When Dusan Ivkovic was chosen as the new
head coach prior to the 1996-97 season, everything came together
at last for the Reds. The following spring, the team seized its first
Euroleague title by downing FC Barcelona 73-58 in Rome behind an
unforgettable performance from guard David Rivers. The Reds
turned that triumph into their country's first triple crown by adding
both the Greek Cup and a fifth consecutive Greek League title.

last seven seasons, tying the record, while fighting its way into the
Final Four in 2009 and 2010. The Reds went all the way to the 2010
Euroleague title game but, unlike in 1997, Barcelona prevailed this
time. Olympiacos added two more Greek Cup titles in 2010 and
2011, the latter with Ivkovic back at the helm.
Olympiacos faced the 2011-12 with a reduced budget but was able
to build a team around superstar guard Vassilis Spanoulis. With
roles clearly defined from the start, Ivkovic gave young players like
Kostas Papanikolaou, Kostas Sloukas, Dimitrios Katsivelis and
Vangelis Mantzaris plenty of chances to prove their value. Kyle
Hines, Pero Antic, Lazaros Papadopoulos and Martynas Gecevicius were the team’s main summer signings. Despite a 1-3 start,
the Reds bounce back to finish second in their regular season
group. After Joey Dorsey and Acie Law arrived before the start of
the Top 16, the team was set to make history. Olympiacos survived
the Top 16, downed Montepaschi Siena in the playoffs and upset
FC Barcelona Regal in the semifinals to reach the title game
against mighty CSKA Moscow. Once in the final, CSKA led by 19
points, 53-34, late in the third quarter.
And just when it all seemed to be over, Olympiacos made its magic
work.
CSKA was held scoreless for almost 6 minutes and Olympiacos
used a 0-13 run to get back in the game. Free throws by Papanikolaou made it a one-point game, 60-61, with 10.4 seconds left. The
Reds fouled Ramunas Siskauskas but to everyone’s amazement,
the former Euroleague MVP missed twice. With 10 seconds left,
Olympiacos did not hesitate to take advantage. Spanoulis found
Printezis in transition and his one-handed floater with 0.7 seconds
left went in the basket and went down in basketball history. The
comeback was completed and Olympiacos claimed the Euroleague title in one of the most incredible title games ever seen in
professional sports. Spanoulis was chosen as the 2012 Final Four
MVP.
Last season, Olympiacos faced a bigger challenge, being able to
successfully defend its trophy despite Ivkovic, the coach of both its

O Olympiacos encarou a temporada 2011/2012 com uma redução
no orçamento mas foi capaz de montar um time em volta do
armador Vassilis Spanoulis. Com papeis definidos desde o início,
Ivkovic deu aos jovens atletas Kostas Papanikolaou, Kostas
Sloukas, Dimitrios Katsivelis e Vangelis Mantzaris a chance de
mostrarem seus valores. Kyle Hines, Pero Antic, Lazaros Papadopoulos e Martynas Gecevicius foram as principais contratações
para o ano. Apesar do começo ruim, os Reds terminaram a
primeira fase em segundo lugar. Depois da chegada de Joey

CSKA ficou sem pontuar por quase seis minutos e o Olympiacos
aproveitou uma corrida de 13 a 0 para voltar ao jogo. Os lances
livres de Papanikolaou deixou o time somente um ponto atrás, 60 a
61, com 10.4 segundos faltando. Os Reds fizeram falta em Ramunas Siskauskas, mas para a surpresa de todos, o ex-MVP da
Euroliga errou os dois lances livres. Com 10 segundos para o final,
o Olympiacos não perdeu a chance. Spanoulis achou Printezis na
transição, que com um arremesso com 0.7 segundos no cronômetro entrou para a história do basquete. A reviravolta foi
completa e o Olympiacos tornou-se o campeão da Euroliga.
Spanoulis foi eleito o MVP da Final.
Na última temporada, o Olympiacos enfrentou um desafio bem
maior, tendo que defender o título sem Ivkovic, já que o treinador,
que conseguiu o bicampeonato da Euroliga, havia se aposentado
de competições de clubes. Os Reds se mexeram na
pré-temporada e adicionaram no elenco dois ex-campeões da
Euroliga, Stratos Perperoglou and Giorgi Shermadini. Mesmo
assim, mais uma vez, o time grego não teve um bom início na fase
de grupos, mas sobreviveram ao chegar aos playoffs diante do
Anadolu Efes Istambul. A série foi difícil e chegou ao quinto jogo,
em que o Efes abriram 15 pontos no primeiro tempo. Spanoulis foi
quem comandou a virada e levou o time a mais um Final Four,
dessa vez, em Londres.

Euroleague titles until then, having retired from club competitions.
The Reds landed two former Euroleague champions, Stratos
Perperoglou and Giorgi Shermadini, as new players to add to its
core. Once again, Olympiacos did not have a good start in either
group stage – going 1-2 in the regular season, 1-3 in the Top 16 - but
survived to make it to the playoffs against Anadolu Efes Istanbul. A
tough, physical series went down to Game 5, in which Efes led by
as many as 15 points in the first half. Spanoulis rallied the troops
and the Reds dominated the second half to set off celebrations at
Peace and Friendship Stadium and point the team towards the
2013 Final Four in London.
A rematch against CSKA was set in the semifinals and Olympiacos
once again played the underdog role close to perfection. A nearperfect defensive exhibition, led by an outstanding Hines, put
Olympiacos back in the Euroleague final as the Reds handcuffed
CSKA 52-69 to storm into the title game against Real Madrid. Once
in the final, Madrid had a strong start and led 10-27 after 10 minutes
but Olympiacos had already earned its reputation as an
undestructible team that never gives up. Indeed, Olympiacos not
only rallied, but scored 90 points in the final 30 minutes to get a
no-doubt-about-it 100-88 win. Spanoulis led the charge with 21
points – all in the second half! – as six Olympiacos players scored
in double figures. Spanoulis had been chosen as the Euroleague
MVP for the first time in his career and now added his third Final
Four MVP honor in as many appearances in the event - an
achievement that only Toni Kukoc accomplished before him.

A revanche diante do CSKA apareceu na semifinal e o Olympiacos
não jogava como favorito. Graças a uma exibição quase perfeita
na defesa, liderada por Hines, o Olympiacos chegou à final
vencendo o CSKA por 69 a 52 e tendo que enfrentar na decisão o
Real Madrid. No jogo decisivo, Madrid começou melhor e liderou
por 27 a 10 nos primeiros 10 minutos. Porém, o Olympiacos já havia
conquistado seu status de time que nunca desiste. E foi o que
aconteceu em seguida. O Olympiacos não só se recuperou como
marcou 90 pontos nos três quartos seguintes vencendo a partida
por 100 a 88. Spanoulis foi o cestinha com 21 pontos, todos no
segundo tempo, e mais seis atletas da equipe grega marcaram
dígitos duplos. Spanoulis foi, pela terceira vez, eleito MVP da Final,
um feito que somente Toni Kukoc conseguiu antes dele.
O Olympiacos chega ao Brasil no seu primor técnico e os fãs de
basquete terão a chance de ver uma equipe talentosa e muito
experiente. Alguns jogadores saíram, mas o espírito se manteve. O
Olympiacos é, sem dúvida, um dos candidatos a vencer seu

The 2013/2014 season will be a great time to Pinheiros/SKY to show
how powerful they are. Increasing every year in the Latin-American
stage, the club from the city of Sao Paulo is not only defending its
FIBA Americas League title but also having the opportunity of reaching the world championship. Besides, the team led by legendary
head coach Claudio Mortari wishes to raise the NBB (National
League) trophy for the first time in history.
Full of important challenges, Pinheiros maintained its main pieces
and formed a first class roster. Led by second most scoring athlete in
the history of NBB, with 3,228 total points, and 2013 FIBA Americas
League MVP, American forward Shamell stayed in the team. His
compatriot guard Joe Smith also dresses Pinheiros Jersey for one
more season. With a highly recommended résumé, Smith has played
in Italy, Russia, Israel and Argentina, and is now one of the main
references in the Brazilian team, thanks to his 3-point accuracy and
his incredible court sense.
To accompany the two Americans, power forward Rafael Mineiro
has also renewed his contract with the club. One of the top
prospects of Brazilian basketball, the 2,11m versatile player was
selected to NBB 1st team last season and was part of the National
Team in the preparation for the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.
Another important piece of the Pinheiros squad has been kept on the
squad, point guard Paulinho Boracini. His great ball handling and
speed can really break the pace of every game.
On the paint, Pinheiros believes in his experienced center Andre
Bambu, who has a deep shot range, and Morro, the second leading
dunker in NBB history. The team also has two young and promising
athletes, Lucas Dias and Humberto Silva, both joined the Under-19
National Team in the World Championship this year.
In order to qualify even more its roster, Pinheiros brought two new
signings. Jonatham Tavernari, who has been overseas for the past
eight years passing through NCAA and Italian League, and American
center Steven Toyloy, one of the top foreign players on the last NBB
season. Tavernari will bring more offensive quality for the team,
specially from behind the arc. Toyloy, in the other hand, is more
physical and has become one of the most dominant centers in Brazilian basketball with a large contribution on the defensive end.
Among the new pair, there is also a new face playing for Pinheiros,
the 18-year old Bruno Caboclo. Considered one of the best athletes of
the Brazilian basketball new generation, the small forward has just
achieved the NBA Basketball Without Borders MVP title, in August,
in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

pelo técnico Cláudio Mortari tentará levantar a taça do NBB pela
primeira vez em sua história.
Repleto de desafios importantes, o esquadrão pinheirense não
bobebou, manteve suas principais peças e formou um elenco de
primeira linha. Segundo maior cestinha da história do NBB, com
3.228 tentos anotados, e MVP da conquista da Liga das Américas
2013, o ala norte-americano Shamell segue na equipe. Outro atleta
nascido nos Estados Unidos que continua vestindo a camisa do
Pinheiros é o ala/armador Joe Smith. Com um currículo de
primeira linha, com direito a passagens por Itália, Rússia, Israel e
Argentina, o jogador chegou ao Pinheiros na última temporada e
rapidamente se tornou um dos principais destaques da equipe,
graças a sua mão calibrada e à sua ótima visão de jogo.
Para fazer companhia à dupla de norte-americanos, o ala/pivô
Rafael Mineiro também renovou seu contrato. Uma das principais
promessas do basquete brasileiro, o jogador foi eleito o melhor de
sua posição no último NBB e fez parte do grupo da Seleção
Brasileira na preparação para a Copa América 2013. Quem
também segue na equipe é o armador Paulinho. Dono de uma
capacidade de pontuar acima da média, o atleta é peça fundamental no esquema do técnico Cláudio Mortari.
No garrafão, a equipe segue contando com os experientes pivôs
André Bambu, que também possui um bom aproveitamento nos
tiros de três pontos, e Morro, segundo colocado no ranking de
enterradas da história do NBB. Ainda seguem na equipe os jovens
e promissores Lucas Dias e Humberto Silva, que representaram a
Seleção Brasileira Sub-19 na disputa do Mundial da categoria
neste ano.
Para qualificar ainda mais seu plantel, o clube da capital paulista
acertou as contratações do ala Jonathan Tavernari, que tem
passagem pelo basquete universitário dos Estados Unidos e
estava atuando na Itália, e do pivô norte-americano Steven Toyloy,
destaque do Paulistano na última edição do NBB. Tavernari trará à
equipe mais uma boa opção ofensiva, especialmente nos tiros de
longa distância, sua especialidade. Por sua vez, Toyloy, dono de
um incrível porte físico, se tornou um dos pivôs mais dominantes
de todo o basquete brasileiro e pode contribuir com enterradas,

In charge of the team, legendary head coach Claudio Mortari truly
believes that he can win it all again, since he led the Esporte Clube
Sirio for the Intercontinental Cup title in 1979. With his large experience on the court, including coaching the Brazilian Team in the 1980
Olympic Games, Pinheiros commander is the key to the success for
this new and thrilling challenge that they are about to face in the
2013/2014 season.
Pinheiros/SKY: three historical years
The traditional club from the city of São Paulo was founded 114 years
ago, but its Best basketball days have been experienced for the past
three years. Pinheiros has become one of the main forces in the Latin
American basketball after winning the 2013 FIBA Americas League
title, the main competition in the continent, and also for the three
international runner-up achievements in the last few years.
After great performances in the NBB (National League) – Pinheiros
has reached the 3rd place twice (2010/2011 and 2011/2012) – the
team had his own chance to face the best clubs in international
tournaments. First, in the 2011 Torneio Interligas, a competition that
brought together the four best ranked teams in both Brazil and
Argentina, Pinheiros beat the traditional clubs like Vivo/Franca
(BRA), Atenas de Cordoba (ARG) and Libertad (ARG) before reaching
the final game against the Argentine Obras Sanitarias. Despite the
home advantadge, the Brazilian team could not overcome the strong
and very experienced rival and had to be satisfied with the silver
medal on its first ever international appearance.
Still in 2011, Pinheiros disputed the South American League. After a
regular start, winning two of the three games in the 1st round, Pinheiros improved its game and started to look great on the court. Led by
Shamell and former NBA player, Marquinhos, Pinheiros beat
Flamengo and made to the semifinals. The toughest challenge came
against the back-to-back NBB champion on that year,
Uniceub/BRB/Brasília, but Pinheiros managed the anxiety and
advanced to the final. The rematch against Obras Sanitarias in the
final game was hard to absorb and the Brazilian team lost once
again.
Apart from the two international finals, Pinheiros was able to achieve
a historic trophy in 2011. For the first time since club’s foundation,
Pinheiros won the State Championship after beating the great São
José/Unimed for 3-1 in the five-game series.

No comando da equipe segue o experiente técnico Cláudio
Mortari. Campeão mundial de clubes à frente do Esporte Clube
Sírio, em 1979, o treinador, de 65 anos, terá a chance de
novamente subir ao degrau mais alto do basquete mundial. Com
sua larga vivência nos quadra, o comandante pode se tornar peça
chave para a talentosa equipe do Pinheiros superar os grandes
desafios que terá pela frente na temporada 2013/2014.
Pinheiros/SKY: três anos históricos
O tradicional clube da capital paulista fundado há 114 anos passou
a viver suas principais glórias no esporte da bola laranja recentemente. Nos últimos três anos, o Pinheiros se firmou como uma das
principais forças do basquete latino-americano. Atual campeão
da Liga das Américas, maior competição de basquete do
continente, a equipe ainda somou três vice-campeonatos em
torneios internacionais, um título paulista e campanhas expressivas no campeonato nacional neste período.
Com seus bons desempenhos no NBB – a equipe ficou com o
terceiro lugar por duas vezes consecutivas (2010/2011 e 2011/2012)
–, o time de São Paulo teve a chance de disputar os principais
campeonatos internacionais do continente. Primeiro, em 2011, no
Torneio Interligas, competição que coloca frente a frente os
quatros melhores colocados do NBB e da Liga Argentina, os
comandados de Cláudio Mortari superaram os tradicionais
Vivo/Franca (BRA), Atenas de Córdoba (ARG) e Libertad (ARG) na
primeira fase e chegaram invictos para a decisão diante do Obras
Sanitarias. Apesar de jogar em casa, a equipe brasileira não
conseguiu superar o forte time argentino e ficou com a medalha
de prata.
Ainda em 2011, o Pinheiros disputou a Liga Sul-Americana. Depois
de duas vitórias em três jogos na fase de classificação, a equipe
chegou à segunda fase com moral. Com atuações destacas da
dupla Shamell e Marquinhos, o time paulista mostrou sua força,
superou o Flamengo e, apesar da derrota para o Atenas de
Córdoba, se classificou às semifinais. Em nova prova de força, os
pinheirenses superaram o Uniceub/BRB/Brasília, até então

and this time they came even stronger. In the first round, the team won
each and every game and advanced to the final with a high level of
confidence. The opponent was once again from Argentina, Peñarol de
Mar Del Plata, who was playing at home and did not give the Brazilian
team a chance. For the third time in a row, Pinheiros had to receive a
runner-up title.
The better days would soon come in the 2013 FIBA Americas League.
Pinheiros beat Osos de Jalisco (MEX) and Estrellas Ocidentales (VEN)
in the first two games of the qualifying round and advanced to the next
stage of the competition. Even after a loss against Lanus (ARG), Pinheiros reorganize itself to win over Flamengo and Mavort (ECU) to make it
to the Final Four.
Then, all that international experience was worth it and Pinheiros
showed that they were truly a Latin America powerhouse beating the
home team, Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR) in Final Four debut, with a
wonderful performance of Shamell, and later, overcoming Lanus (ARG),
considered the most favorite team to win the tournament. The victory
against the Argentine club and a combination of results made Pinheiros
automatically FIBA Americas League champion and gave the Brazilian
team a chance to reach the world title against Olympiacos.

para os brasileiros.
Além de chegar às finais internacionais, o Pinheiros conseguiu
levantar um troféu histórico na temporada 2011. Pela primeira vez
desde sua fundação, o clube faturou o título do Campeonato
Paulista. Para chegar à glória, o Pinheiros mostrou ser uma equipe
muito qualificada e superou o forte time do São José/Unimed na
decisão.
No ano seguinte, o Pinheiros novamente teve a chance de
disputar o Torneio Interligas. Mais uma vez com 100% de
aproveitamento na primeira fase, desta vez diante de
Unitri/Magazine Luiza (BRA), Lanús (ARG) e Libertad (ARG),o time
se classificou à final. O adversário na partida que valia o título foi o
Peñarol de Mar del Plata. Atuando fora de seus domínios, os
pinheirenses não conseguiram parar o experiente Léo Gutierrez e
acumularam o terceiro vice-campeonato internacional seguido.
Mas a glória máxima do basquete do Pinheiros ainda estava por
vir. Depois de ficar três vezes com o segundo lugar em torneios
internacionais, o time de São Paulo subiu ao lugar mais alto do
pódio logo em sua primeira participação na Liga das Américas.
Depois de vitórias sobre Osos de Jalisco (MEX) e Estrellas Orientales (VEN) e derrota para o Lanús (ARG) na etapa inicial, a equipe
se classificou à fase de semifinal. Apesar de novo revés para o
clube de Buenos Aires, os pinheirenses superaram o rival caseiro
Flamengo e o Mavort (ECU) e se garantiram no Final Four.
Foi então que o Pinheiros realmente provou ser uma das potências
do basquete nas Américas. Logo de cara, a equipe dirigida por
Mortari levou a melhor sobre o Capitanes de Arecibo (PUR), atual
campeão do torneio e anfitrião do Final Four, graças a uma ótima
exibição de Shamell, posteriormente eleito o MVP da competição.
Na segunda rodada, o adversário foi o carrasco Lanús. Depois de
duas derrotas para os argentinos nas fases anteriores, o esquadrão brasileiro deu o troco, saiu vencedor e, por conta de uma
combinação de resultados, assegurou o título do principal torneio
do continente com uma rodada de antecipação.

The basketball Intercontinental Cup is an international competition
whose origins stem from the competition organized by Real Madrid
Basketball under the hand of Raimundo Saporta , club director and
president of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) , and
under the authorization and the support of William Jones, his secretary general.
A Copa Intercontinental de basquete é uma competição internacional que tem sua origem graças a um torneio organizado pelo
Real Madrid, comandado na época pelo Sr. Raimundo Saporta,
diretor do clube e presidente da FIBA (Federação Internacional de
Basquete), e com a autorização e apoio do Sr. William Jones, seu
secretário geral.
The competition was held for the first time in January 1966 under the
name Intercontinental Cup to mark the inauguration of the new
basketball arena of the Madrid club , Raimundo Saporta Pavilion old.
Since then, the tournament was organized by FIBA, and while born in
Madrid, the tournament went on to havedifferent names, the most
famous being the Christmas Tournament.
A competição foi organizada pela primeira vez em janeiro de 1966,
já com o nome de Copa Intercontinental, e marcou a inauguração
da nova arena de basquete do Real Madrid, o Raimundo Saporta
Pavilion. Desde então, o torneio foi organizado pela FIBA e, depois
de Madrid, passou a ter vários nomes diferentes. O mais famoso
foi o Torneio de Natal.
The second edition was name Copa America due to the origin of the
participating teams, and it was not until the third edition, in 1968,
when the tournament was renamed to the popular and best-known
Christmas Tournament name (and later Fernando Martin Memorial Raimundo Saporta). On that first occasion the contenders were the
Ignis Varese ( champion ), the SC Corinthians (runner-up ) , Real
Madrid , champions of Spain and host ( third place ) and Jamaco
Saint Chicago ( fourth place ) .
A segunda edição foi nomeada Copa América devido à origem dos
clubes participantes e somente na terceira edição, em 1968, que o
torneio foi renomeado para o seu nome mais popular e conhecido,
Torneio de Natal. Naquela ocasião, as equipes que participaram
da competição foram o Ignis Varese (campeão), Sport Club
Corinthians (vice), Real Madrid (terceiro colocado) e Jamaco Saint
Chicago (quarto).
Parallel, and after leaving the denomination Intercontinental Cup,
FIBA resumed the concept of the prestigious competition started by
Real Madrid , and the FIBA World Club Championship ( Intercontinental Cup ) was born, due to the size and the competitive nature and
prestige the tournament acquired. And so it was given the authentic
approval of World Club Championship, which would be in played until
1987 and resumed for one year in 1996.
In the meantime, came the McDonald's FIBA / NBA World Championship tournament as asuccessor. It was a basketball tournament
organized by the NBA and FIBA, and sponsored by the company
McDonald' , which was held nine times between 1987 and 1999 , and
which pitted teams of the NBA and FIBA against each other.
Between 1987 and 1991, the tournament was held every year. In 1993,
it was held every two years, always being won by the representatives of the NBA.
The last official edition of the Intercontinental Cup was held in Milan
in 1987, but in the summer of 1996 , the European champion
Panathinaikos BSA informally faced South American champions
Olimpia BC in a play off to the best of three games, subsequently
recognized by FIBA . The Argentineans won the Intercontinental Cup
(with the approval of FIBA ).

Paralelamente, a FIBA deu sequência ao conceito dessa prestigiosa competição iniciada pelo Real Madrid e criou o Campeonato
Mundial de Clubes. E assim, foi aprovado autenticamente o torneio
que foi disputado até 1987 e teve uma edição extra em 1996.
A última edição da Copa Intercontinental foi sediada em 96 teve a
decisão entre os campeões europeus, o Panathinaikos BSA, e os
sul-americanos, Olimpia BC, numa série melhor de três jogos. Os
argentinos levaram a melhor e faturaram a competição.
Após o término do Mundial de Clubes, apareceu o McDonald’s
Championship. O torneio organizado pela FIBA e NBA e patrocinado pelo McDonald’s teve nove edições entre os anos de 1987 e
1999, e colocou frente a frente equipes da NBA contra times do
mundo inteiro. De 87 a 91, a competição foi organizada anualmente, depois, em 93, a cada dois anos, sempre tendo como
campeão um representante da NBA.
Em 2013, um acordo entre FIBA, FIBA Americas e Euroliga fez com
que a Copa Intercontinental voltasse a ser disputada, com o
confronto entre o campeão da Liga das Américas, o
Pinheiros/SKY, do Brasil, e o atual bicampeão europeu, o Olympiacos Piraeus, da Grécia.
