FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Over the last two weeks there have been many interesting learning opportunities as students have
been getting to know their teachers and the students in their classes. The Prep students have settled
into school very well and have been learning about school and their new friends. Last week they met
their Year 6 buddies which was an exciting time. On Wednesdays when the Prep students are not at
school the Prep teachers have been individually spending time with each child assessing their literacy
and numeracy skills so the learning program can be planned for their learning needs. The Year 3-6
students participated in the District Swimming Sports last Friday and a number of students will be going
to the zone swimming event. Congratulations to all those who participated.
It was good to see many parents meeting with their children‟s teachers on Monday night to talk about
their children, their interests and their learning. I am sure that both parents and teachers found these
meetings most beneficial.
This week the Level 4 (Yr 5 & 6) students will be visiting the Chinese Museum, Chinatown, the Greek
precinct and Carlton where they will sample Italian gelati. This will be a wonderful cultural experience
where the students will learn about different cultures and have a multi cultural experience within our
own city.
On Monday we were very fortunate to have the local member of Parliament - The Honourable Mary
Wooldridge, Minister for Mental Health, Women‟s Affairs and Community Services, who has been the
Member for Doncaster since 2006, to come to the Milgate school assembly and present the school
leaders, house leaders, Junior School Councillors and Environmental Leaders with their badges. This
was a special occasion when we celebrated and congratulated all those students who have been
selected for leadership roles which they will do responsibly and they will be excellent role models for
the other students in the school. Mary talked to the students about leadership and the importance of
setting a good example, listening to others, looking after others, accepting others and encouraging all
to do their best. She also talked about all students being leaders in their own way within the school and
the classroom.
Congratulations to Joshua S (5AA) who has been selected to be part of the Talent Identification Squad
for diving which is the beginning pathway for elite divers. Joshua trains at MSAC five times a week and
we will look forward to following his progress and hearing about his successes.
Milgate PS Family Community Picnic - Tuesday 1 March 6pm – 8pm
On Tuesday 1 March from 6pm – 8pm there will be a Milgate PS Family community picnic on the
school oval. Families are invited to come and BYO rugs, chairs and food for a picnic. This is an
opportunity to meet with the staff and other families of the school for an informal get together to begin
the school year. There will also be some games during the evening and parents and students are
invited to participate in these. We hope to see many families there and look forward to an evening of
fun and meeting new people.
Student Allergies to nuts and other products
There are a number of students at Milgate with allergies to nuts and nut products. We request that
parents are mindful of this and as far as possible, do not send nuts or nut products to school in their
children‟s lunches / snacks. Thank you for your assistance with this. Parents who have a child with an
allergy will have completed the allergy form but if your child has an allergy and you haven‟t completed
the form these are available from the school office.
School Council elections
There are 3 vacancies on the school council for Parent members so if you would like to nominate,
nomination forms are available from the school office. See further details in regard to the role of the
school council and the election timeline towards the end of this WHAM.
Students arriving early to school
There is a teacher on yard duty outside from 8:45am each day. If students are coming to school before
8:45am and they are not involved in basketball training with a parent, they should be attending the
Outside of School Hours Care Program (OSHC) in the stadium that operates from 7am – 8:45am and
3:30pm – 6pm. This is for student safety. Information in regard to this program is available from the
school office / website.
DEECD website for Parents
The Department of Education has a website for parents at www.education.vic.gov.au/parents. This
website includes interesting information for parents in regard to their child‟s schooling.
Safety around the school
The school was contacted last week by the Doncaster police in regard to safety and driving in and
around the Serpells Road area of the school. They have had complaints from residents in regard to
motorists driving fast along this road. The police have been in Serpells Road and fined a number of
drivers over the last couple of weeks as they are very concerned about the number of motorists
speeding in this 40KMH speed zone. We ask parents who are driving their children to school to obey
the speed limits of 40KMH around the school and to park appropriately. There are some parents who
are double parking which is very dangerous and also parking in 2 minute car parks for a long time. Our
student safety is extremely important and everyone can help with this by driving safely and obeying the
signs. A suggestion is to walk to school with your children and enjoy the exercise and time together –
you could park a few streets away and walk from there. The school car park is only for staff and parents
who have a child with a disability. Parents are not permitted to park there before or after school for
safety reasons. All parents and students are requested to use the paths at the front of the school and
not to walk across the car park for safety reasons. Thank you for your assistance with all of the above –
we can all contribute to a safe school and the safety of our students.

Personal Goods Brought to School at Owner's Risk
 Personal property is often brought to school by students, staff and visitors. This can include mobile
phones, electronic games, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises.
 The Department of Education does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has
no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.
 Students are discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.

WHAM NEWSLETTER
We would like to draw your attention back to the importance of the fortnightly newsletter –
WHAM. Apart from the Newsletter being a great chance to let you know what is happening in
the school, WHAM also includes IMPORTANT information from the Department of Education.
As we are an environmentally friendly, paper-saving school, we no longer print a hard copy of
WHAM for each family. It is available on the School Website (under Newsletters). You can
subscribe to receive an email reminder when the new issue becomes available on line. Go to
www.milgateps.vic.edu.au, and click on “Subscribe to the Mailing List” – then follow prompts.
If you wish to receive a hard copy of WHAM, please advise the school office and we will send
it home with your child.
PE/OUTDOOR EDUCATION NEWS
SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS: We had 35 students represent Milgate PS at the Templestowe District
Swimming Championships on Friday 18th February. All students put in a fantastic effort on the day
and were a great credit to Milgate. The following students were successful in making it through to the
Manningham Division Swimming on Thursday 3rd March at the Nunawading Pool. We wish them all
the best.
Round 1 of Interschool Sport saw the Green Teams play Templestowe Park PS and the White Teams
play Serpell PS on Thursday 17th February. Round 2 results will be in my next WHAM article.

by an active mode of transport then that is fantastic and Milgate PS highly encourage students to
do so. Let‟s see if we can increase our monthly Active Transport Results throughout 2011. There
are just a couple of things to keep in mind.

o Yr 4 – Yr 6 students may travel independently

Planning is well underway for the L4 Camp in Term 2 and I will be in touch with Parent Helpers in the

Ultranet News
We now have teachers, students and parents accessing the Ultranet at Milgate. Parent
welcome letters and passwords were sent home in Term 4 2010 and many parents have
already setup their Ultranet account. The passwords that were sent home may have
expired if you have not used it by now, so please contact the school if you require a new password to
setup your account. Prep parent passwords will be sent home soon.
If your child has forgotten their Ultranet User Name or password, ask them to speak to their teacher
and they will issue a new one.
Some people have had problems accessing the Ultranet or registering with IDAM. The following
software is required on any computer accessing the Ultranet or IDAM:
 Adobe Flash 10.0.45 or greater
 Internet Explorer 8+
o We recommend having alternative web browsers available. Try „Google Chrome‟,

YEAR 6 INTO YEAR 7 TRANSITION INFORMATION
Attention all parents of all Level 4 students. In the foyer of the new Year 6 building is a window where
Transition Information will be displayed. This information may include details of upcoming open
nights or information nights. It may also provide details of scholarship testing or other such
information. Please peruse this window at your convenience to ensure you keep up to date with any
relevant dates. If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
There are many ways in which we can encourage our students to care for the environment at Milgate
Primary School. We would like to continue to seek the support of parents and friends to send “Nude
Food” in your child‟s lunchbox. Packing foods in smaller containers by removing their packaging at
home, as well as minimising the use of gladwrap assists our students to become greater carers of the
environment. This helps by reducing the rubbish that often finds its way into the playground and
school grounds. Encourage your child to drink from their water bottles and where possible walk to
school instead of driving the car! Throughout the year the Environmental Team would like to begin a
vegetable garden with the students. This will require the assistance of the Milgate Community to get
this initiative up and rolling, so please stay tuned! Also if families have spare ice cream containers
please send them to school as we can use these under the drinks taps to catch excess water that can
be used to water the plants. Every little bit helps!

Hi, I‟m Liv from 6BW, and I am one
of the two School Leaders here at Milgate in
2011. I am really excited about this year and I am
really looking forward to all of the fun things that will be
happening! Let me tell you a little about me. I love sport
and I play basketball for the Bulleen Boomers and do
athletics. I am also a mad Collingwood fan like the rest
of my family. I have a brother named Will in 3CH and I
have a big, cuddly dog named Digger. I hope that my
final year at Milgate will be the best year ever.
Hi I’m Rami. I’m going to represent Milgate Primary
School as the School Leader for 2011. This is a quick
snapshot about me. I’m 11 turning 12 in April. I enjoy
swimming for the Nunawading Swimming Club. In my
free time I like to read and play outside. I hope I can
represent Milgate as the School Leader to the best of
my abilities and I know I will carry this role with pride.
Hi I‟m William. I represent Milgate Primary School as
the deputy school leader, here‟s a quick snapshot about
me. I love to play basketball, in fact I‟ve played it ever
since I was in Prep for the Milgate Knights. I really enjoy
school because we have so many great facilities to offer
the younger students of Milgate Primary School. I hope
that I can represent Milgate as the Deputy School

Hi, my name is Sophie and this year I am the Deputy
School Leader of Milgate Primary. Away from school I
play netball for Donvale and am a very proud supporter
of the Carlton Football Club. At home I have a sister
and a brother who are both at university. When I grow
up I want to be a police woman. That has been a dream
of mine since I was four years old. I’m very excited to
be Deputy School Leader this year and I hope this year
at Milgate will be one to remember.

are some interests of mine: I love soccer (I am a fan of
most sports!), play the piano and guitar and I also love

Hi, my name is Charlie and I am proud to be a Roberts
house leader for 2011. I am in 6BW and I have two
brothers at the school. I play footy, basketball and I do
athletics. I have represented Milgate on numerous
occasions at things like basketball, footy, track and field
and cross country.
Hi, I’m Georgia, one of the House Leaders of Streeton. I
have a sister in Year 8 and a brother in year 2 who
were also in Streeton having a go at all the house
activities. I’m a very sporty person playing basketball,
tennis and doing athletics outside of school. I enjoy
them just as much as all the house and district events. I
am proud to be Streeton’s House Leader and am
looking forward to leading Streeton and supporting my
fellow house members.
Hi, my name is Tim and I‟m House Leader for Boyd. I
have many interests some of which include football,
basketball, cricket, athletics and cross country, all of
which I‟ve represented the school in. I also sing in the
National Boys Choir which has taken me overseas and
interstate. I‟m very adventurous and enjoy going

MILGATE PRIMARY SCHOOL - SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
School Council elections will be taking place in the next couple of weeks.
The Milgate Primary School Council is comprised of:
7 Parent Members, 4 DEECD members including the Principal, 2 community members who are nominated
by the school council.
The following School Councillors have completed their 2 year term and their positions become vacant:

Nena Sadler has resigned as she no longer has children at Milgate PS so we will need a parent to fill a
one year casual vacancy.

Liz Barr has left the school so a staff member will be elected to fill this position. A casual vacancy of one
year will replace Janene McKinlay.
These members above are welcome to renominate for a further 2-year term.
The following School Councillors remain on the School Council until 2012:

The community member is usually a P&F representative.

An election is to be conducted for members of the School Council of Milgate Primary School.

School Council Elections 2011 - Information for Parents
What is a school council and what does it do?
All Government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to
set the key directions of a school within Departmental provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to
directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.
Who is on the school council?
There are three possible categories of membership:
• A mandated elected Parent Category. More than one third of the total members must be from this category.
Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) employees can be Parent members at their
child‟s school as long as they are not employed at the school.
• A mandated elected DEECD Employee Category. Members of this category may make up no more than one
third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
• An optional Community Member Category. Members of this category are
co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DEECD employees are
not eligible to be Community members.
The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the
annual school council elections.
Why is Parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of
the school.
Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that
their children feel a greater sense of belonging.
How can you become involved?
The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held
if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant.
In view of this, you might seriously consider
• standing for election as a member of the school council
• encouraging another person to stand for election.
Do I need special experience to be on school council?
No. What you do need is an interest in your child‟s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help
shape the school‟s future.
What do you need to do to stand for election?
The principal will issue a notice and call for nominations following the commencement of Term 1 each year. All
school council elections must be completed by the end of March.
If you decide to stand for election, you can arrange for someone to nominate you as a candidate or you can
nominate yourself in the Parent Category.
DEECD employees whose child is enrolled in a school in which they are not employed are eligible to nominate as
parents for the school council where their child is enrolled.
Once the nomination form is completed, return it to the principal within the timeframe stated on the Notice of Election
Schedule. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt following the receipt of your completed nomination.
If there are more nominations received than there are vacancies on council, a ballot will be conducted during the two
weeks after the call for nominations has closed.
Remember
• Ask the school for help if you would like to stand for election and are not sure what to do.
• Consider standing for election to council this year.
• Be sure to vote in the elections.

Schools and Communities - “COMMUNITY BUILDING”
School Council has an important role in fostering:
1. Connectedness: Building a strong bond between all school community members (students,
parents & staff) and with our wider community. .
2. Relationships:-When people know each other better, the more aligned their expectations become.
3. Harmony: - Most conflict is caused by differences in perception. Our children will be safer and
happier if we are able to connect with each other.
4. Values: - When our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity and Cooperation, are shared and lived by us as adults in our school community they will be transmitted to
the children. Our actions and interactions show children what we value.
5. Civics and Citizenship:-Children who see their parents making positive contributions to society
are much more likely to do so themselves.
ATTENTION ALL PARENTS/STUDENTS
LOST PROPERTY
We had a HUGE collection of unnamed clothing at the end of last year. Lost property has now been cleaned out to
start fresh for the new school year.
Let us all make an effort to reduce the number of lost items this year.
Please ensure all clothing (especially jumpers, jackets and hats) are named. If your child is using second hand
items please ensure that they have the current child‟s name CLEARLY LABELLED. When labelling, surnames
are better than first name only. In this way, any items found in lost property will be returned to the student. All
unnamed items are held for a couple of months then laundered and donated to the school uniform shop for sale as
a second hand item.
Not only to reduce the expense of replacing school uniform items, we must remember that our uniform is a sense of
pride in our school community. So please label all items.
