The Solent Model Railway Group‟85 was formed in February 1975, to promote a friendship amongst modellers and assist in the interchange of ideas and techniques. The club meets Mondays and Wednesday (except bank holidays) at Denys railway station. We have a varied selection of activities throughout the year, some of last year‟s events are illustrated on the photographic display, Stand N°51 Contact: Alan Cosier, Secretary, 21 Seymore Close, Southampton, SO16 6RF. It is our 35th annual show and the 23rd under the EUROTRACK banner. Our first exhibition was held in the Royal Hotel, followed by 11 years in the Solent Suite underneath the Southampton Guildhall, before moving to the Guildhall in 1988 and then adding the Solent Suite to the Guildhall in 1995. This year will be the first time since 1992 that we have not had modellers from Hungary at the exhibition. András Domonkos (Bobomodell Club) suffered a heart attack last November from which he did not survive. András travelled the 1750km (about 1150miles) from Szeged each year since 1993 bringing his superb models most of which were scratchbuilt. One year he even brought a small layout on his back by train which also involved changing at Köln, crossing the channel on a ferry and then train from Dover. For many years Tamás Letenyei from Baross Gábor, Veszprém (1500km / 1000km) also came along with some other members of both clubs. András and Tamás will be missed this year and but we hope to see Tamás next year. 71 KEVIN ROBERTSON TRADE 2 Denewulf Close, Bishops Waltham, SO32 1GZ Author of several books such as Bullied’s Leader Class & GWR - The Badminton Line. Kevin will have a wide selection of books and DVDs including many of local interest. 72 CHELTENHAM MODEL CENTRE TRADE 39 High Street, Cheltenham, GL50 1DY Telephone: 01242 234644 Fax: 01242 226050 E-mail: [email protected] If you are after a ready to run locomotive, coach or wagon, track, etc. in N, 00 or 0 then try this stand. Anyone who reads railway magazines will understand their stock by the size of their adverts; so if you cannot see something then please ask NOTES Thank you for visiting us this weekend and sincerely hope that your time spent with us will have been enjoyable, for without your support we would not be able to continue these events. We thank all exhibitors and traders some of whom have come far and wide to be with us. Ron Boreham Chairman & Ian How, Exhibition Organiser. These are identified at the head of each description in a form such as 00 (76.2 / 16.5) where: the letters, 00, identify the common name. Scenic, material, model vehicle and card kits. 68 UKTRAINSIM DEMONSTRATION Peter Peddlesden, Onehouse Stowmarket Suffolk Website: www.uktrainsim.com Exhibitions Website: www.uktrainsimlive.com UKTrainSim promotes an interest in railways through the medium of Virtual Railway simulations. Much the same skills are required to build a virtual railway as are needed to build a real or model railway. We demonstrate typical UK based routes, locos and rolling stock, but do occasionally demonstrate others from further afield; Europe and USA. Please feel free to discuss anything railway related with our demonstrators as a number of our crew are also railway modellers. 69 DCC WORKSHOP PROVIDED BY THE UKTRAINSIM CREW DEMONSTRATION Peter Peddlesden, Onehouse Stowmarket Suffolk the first figures in brackets are the scale ratio (1:76.2 is the ratio equivalent of 4mm to 1ft). the second figure is the actual track gauge. This clearly shows the difference between 00 (76.2 / 16.5), with its "narrow" track and P4 (76.2 / 18.83), which is the true scale value. Note that the true scale for 16.5 mm track gauge is H0 (87.1 / 16.5). FUTURE DATES Oasis Academy, Lordshill 20/21 November 2010 eurotrack in Virton, Belgium 25/26 September 2010 Annual re-union of the eurotrack clubs (a different town/country each year) Eastleigh Model Railway Show incorporating EUROTRACK 2011 26/27 February 2011 Website: www.uktrainsim.com Exhibitions Website: www.uktrainsimlive.com There‟s still a lot of confusion about DCC and what it can and can‟t do, what the benefits and pitfalls are and so forth. With DCC becoming more and more mainstream this confusion is only going to spread further and our aim is to try and clear some of the mist, as well as provide a place for people to come and ask questions and find out if DCC is going to be right for them. As part of our demonstration we‟d like to talk to people about all the different systems that are available, what their choices are, compatibility between systems, computer control and so forth. There‟s a lot to choose from and that selection is rapidly growing 70 LSWR MODELS TRADE 10 Conyers Close, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, KT12 4NG Telephone/Fax: 01932 246123 See PENGUIN first for all the best quality models in American HO and N scale. The line to „Little Binfield‟, the imaginary country estate of the fictitious family of Lady Bracknell and her husband who built the railway, characters created by Oscar Wilde in his 1895 play “The Importance of Being Ernest”, supposedly branches out from the northern end of the real SECR/LSWR junction station at Wokingham to run just a couple of miles to „Little Binfield‟, on the NW edge of the real Binfield village. As is common with light railways, it has an eclectic and somewhat haphazard collection of locos and stock. The characters depicted on the layout are those from the play, its creator, and real historic personalities of Binfield village in the late Victorian and Edwardian era, discovered from documents in Binfield local library. The layout is primarily designed to be run in the 1897-1914 period, but can also be adapted to depict more modern periods when desired. 3 2 BIRMINGHAM MOOR STREET P4 (76.2 / 18.83) 63 KEITHS MODEL RAILWAYS TRADE West Midlands Area Group of the Scalefour Society 2 Holyrood Drive, Countesthorpe, Laicester, LE8 5TR Birmingham Moor Street was built as an entry to the 2007 DEMU Minories Challenge to build a terminus station with three platform faces in 7' x 1'. The layout represents the terminus side of Moor Street station in central Birmingham – opened in 1909, Moor Street terminus handled suburban services to the south of the city, Leamington-Spa and Stratfordupon-Avon until replacement by the current through-station when Snow Hill re-opened in 1987. The station building and terminus platforms were restored in 2006 but, as yet, remain disconnected from the rail network – we understand that work will commence in 2010 to bring them back in to use. We can operate the layout in the transition period between steam and diesel traction or in the British Rail corporate era of the late '70s and early '80s. In the former era, most suburban services are in the hands of DMUs but some steam hauled trains are still to be seen. Freight and parcels trains reverse here to use the connection to the neighbouring goods depot. Later, suburban services are entirely in the capable hands of DMUs but we have imagined that the goods depot remained open so freight and parcels trains can also be seen. We extended the layout both length and width-ways for the Scalefour Society/DEMU Challenge to lengthen the platforms and include one of the three wagon hoists serving the lower level of the goods depot. The layout has been simplified and shortened to fit the space available but the key features of Moor Street's station building and three platforms are modelled, including one of the traversers! Control is by Lenz DCC or by conventional DC. Working signals operated by model aircraft servos have been scratchbuilt by members of the WMAG, as were the structures and scenic features. We hope you enjoy our slice of Birmingham nostalgia. A small family business and railway enthusiasts dealing in second hand model railway items of all gauges as well as a good selection of railway accessories for all modelling needs. Also carried is a small amount of new Bachmann. Hornby and Vitrains. 3 66 BAMPTON YARD 00 (76.2 / 16.5) James Kille, Southampton Bampton Yard is a busy freight depot just west of London in a heavily urban area. Trains arrive over the plate bridge to reception rod, loco is then off to the shed or runs back light. The train is then broken up by the yard shunter – either to the goods shed at the rear or the front siding to be made into other trains for the final destination. Due to Bampton‟s location loco‟s and stock from Southern, Western and LMS are frequent visitors. In fact every day is different here 64 CHRIS ROBERTS TRADE Versailles, Paris, France Tel: 00 33 (1) 34 61 76 98 e-mail: [email protected] From his base near Versailles in France, Chris offers a wide range of quality, secondhand, H0 gauge, models particularly of German, Austrian and French prototypes. The layout was designed to illustrate in minimum space what can be achieved with a mixture of customised “off the shelf” products and basic stratchbuilding techniques. The location is fictional and set in BR sidings around the late fifties early sixties. Despite it‟s size, the layout features Peco Code 100 track and turnouts with Seep point motors, 16v lighting and Kadee automatic coupling. 60 The layout is based in Cornwall as a branch line which survived Beeching‟s axe as far as Morwellham due to the china clay works. The china clay works sees CDA wagons loaded by diggers and VGA vans for palletised loads, whilst the station platform has a regular passenger services for the village some ¾ of a mile away. A goods siding which was once used by Cornish farmers now sees Railfreight wagons bound for Exeter Riverside Freight Yard and is also used for storage of engineering stock. PANES - MODEL RAILWAY SPARES TRADE Woking Miniature Railway Society Modellers 10 Jestyn Street, Mount Pleasant, Porth, Rhondda, Mid-Glamorgan, CF39 0DN SANKLEY is a fictitious place a few miles to the north of Gillingham and east of Wincanton. It is a Southern station with connections to the Somerset & Dorset and the Great Western. The period is 1948-50 allowing the running of locomotives and carriages in four liveries: late Southern, the Somerset & Dorset had become London Midland & Scottish by that time, and Great Western, all waiting to be repainted, and stock already in the new British Railways colours. Goods stock could have come from anywhere. In our imagination this “might have been” town was in a prosperous agricultural area. Freight movements reflect this but all trains are relatively short, being limited by the length of the station (and the fiddle yard behind the backscene). Passenger trains have to be no more than two carriages with push-pull and railmotors arriving quite frequently. Why the name "SANKLEY"? Our second layout began with the second letter of the alphabet, the next layout was Thirdlev, then came Ivley (note the Roman 4), and for this one we have anglicised the spelling of the French for five. SANKLEY was entered in the Scalefour Society‟s 18∙83 Challenge held at the Scaleforum Exhibition in September 2005. Judging was by visitors to the exhibition and resulted in the layout receiving a Commended award. As the name suggests this is the place to come to find those elusive spare bits that you have been looking for to get your layout back into tip-top condition. Hornby, Lima or Triang it‟s all here. If you don‟t see the part you need just ask Richard and he will do his best to find it for you. 56 GLEN EADES TRADE 10 Fairway Close, Oldland Common, Bristol, BS30 9SA Tel: 0117 932 5411 Specialising in quality second hand model railway items for twenty years, is offering a large selection of Continental items to suit all pockets. 57 FHP AUDIO TRADE FHP Audio Visual, Hayfields, Upton Scudamore, Warminster, Wiltshire, UK-BA12 0AE Tel: +44 (0)1985 212863, Fax: +44 (0)1985 217878 E-mail: [email protected] Internet: www.tickettoride.co.uk European Railway videos from Ticket to Ride. This is a freelance layout, reproducing the III/IV epochs (as classified by MOROP, corresponding to the 1945-1990 period) and is located in the countryside of Normandy in France. The model features a passing station, as some still exist today, a typical and animated village with its superb stone house, an exact reproduction of Jean-Pierre‟s own house located 2km off Coutances in the department of the Manche. Take a special look at the small public garden with all its details and the Café Henriette, alongside with some typical daily scenes. The home to all moles, ladybirds and mice but most of all it is home to the Bramble Bottom Rail System, BBR for short. With a small school house beneath the tree stump and a dozen or so houses, life goes on without incident. Well! Except when Edwin Earwig sat on Malcolm Mouses‟s blackberry pie. Edwin still can‟t get the stain out of his trousers. Every day the BBRe express train delivers mail for the snail Xpress delivery Service and then takes passengers to Lower Bramble Bottom to do their shopping or to work in the honey factory run by Brian Bumble Bee! The goods trains also regularly delivers strawberries, blackberries and other fruits plus building materials for use by the locals. This unique layout is the brainchild of Brian Rawlings known for his Grumstick and Dipplewick Railway. The layout is very popular on the exhibition circuit and we hope it is enjoyed as much as Brian enjoyed building it. Peco track has been used with SEEP electromagnetic uncoupling system and bell cranks and rods to operate automata. 50 SOLENT MODEL RAILWAY GROUP „85 INFORMATION STAND Contact: Alan Cosier, Secretary, 26 Seymour Close, Southampton SO16 6RF E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.fdelaitre.com/Smrg.htm Club information stand. 51 SOLENT MODEL RAILWAY GROUP „85 2009 DISPLAY Display of activities, events organised and/or attended by members of the Solent Model Railway Group during the last year. The Concept. The Surf line is the name given to the stretch of railroad that runs from San Diego up through Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, One hundred miles to the north of Los Angeles. It gets its name as a large part of the route hugs the coastline. Amtrak passenger trains run over this stretch of line with two trains a day continuing north of Santa Barbara, one of these being the Coast Starlight which travels between Los Angeles and Seattle in the north of the country. The stretch of line north of Los Angeles is owned by Southern Pacific (now part of Union Pacific) while south of LA to San Diego is owned by Burlington Northern Santa Fe. The Layout. The first layout, „California Coast, The Surf Line‟ was modelled on the area around Santa Barbara. However this layout is a near scale model of the area around Santa Barbara Amtrak station which is between the beach and the main downtown shopping and restaurant area. Many photographs and measurements have been taken in the vicinity of the station to recreate as many of the details as possible but some compression of the area modelled has had to be made. Hopefully, this doesn‟t spoil the overall scene. A large number of trees including different types of palm trees have been used as per the real location. There are many other types of trees such ones with a violet flower that can also be seen on the layout. Atlas code 55 track is used on the scenic sections whilst Peco finescale track has been used in the fiddleyard using SEEP solenoids for the turnouts. All buildings have been scratch built from plastic sheet and are as close to scale as can be from scaling form photographs and from pacing out the wall s. Also great use of Google maps and Google Streets has been made to check proportions and locations of buildings relative to each other Rolling stock and locomotives have been detailed and are from a number of manufacturers such as Kato, Atlas, Roundhouse and Microtrains. 22 7 52 SOLENT MODEL RAILWAY GROUP „85 SALES The Solent Model Railway Group sales stand has a wide range of second-hand railway items and books. However, it can be „Wherever you want it to be!‟ The scene depicts the railroad still hard at work in the wee small hours! A darkened city back-scene and blue LED floodlighting give a moonlight glow. Ambient sound and some theatrical lighting effects help to make the scene a little different from the usual. (Look out for „Fat Joe‟s Disco‟, and 'Pompey Lil' staggering home after a hard night's work, and the pipe laying gang struggling to finish before the morning rush begins). Asciano Del Lamone is a fictional station on a secondary line in the foothills of the Appenine mountains, the time span for the layout is from the 1970s to the present and as such the line is in decay with threats of closure hanging over it ,when the layout is operating in the present time an enterprising group has taken over the loco shed and its possible to see some preserved locos operating. As exhibited the layout is only partially complete as there are plans to extend it, with more scenic boards and make it a continuous run layout. The layout is DCC and a number of locos are sound equipped, controlled from a Bachmann Dynamis the signals are produced by 2 Italian firms nameley Il Treno and Essemmee, the buildings are mostly produced by Ninive with some scratchbuilt by myself. Operation is from the front of the layout, using an NCE Powercab DCC control, the switches (points) being operated by the old „wire –in – tube‟ method. Simple – but safe. 46 IBERIAN RAILWAYS SOCIETY SOCIETY Withdrawn due to unforeseen circumstances. 46 ITCHEN VALLEY MODEL RAILWAY CLUB DEMONSTRATION Mark Lancaster, Southampton 13 Mark Lancaster busy brass kit building locomotives and rolling stock, but do interrupt he for a chat about model railways. Take time for a chat as your questions are always welcomed. 48 STANDEN WATCHETT Z (220 / 6.5) Graham Jones, Northampton Many US mainline railroads are single track with passing places such as this. We built the baseboards at the show last year and we hope to have at least the track down before you see it. We know it is high off the ground, but the smaller the scale the more important it becomes to view it from the proper angle i.e. the same angle you see real trains from. The layout is called a dogbone because it is long and thin with a lump at each end where the track goes round in a circle. It is the most space efficient way of having a round and round layout complete with a fiddle yard. Standen Watchett is a freelance exhibition layout featuring the LNER just prior to Nationalisation progressing through to BR Eastern Region in the mid 1970‟s when diesel was king. The area modelled is somewhere on the East Coast Mainline. Measuring 12ft by 2ft, the layout is constructed using 3 X 4ft sections bolted together in a stepped fashion to give a landscaping effect. The main track bed however is on the same level throughout. The track plan shows the left-hand board carrying the station, town and sidings. The centre board carrying gentle countryside with the single-track branch line dipping below the mainline. The right hand board completes the layout with a viaduct over a canal, before the track enters the tunnel. Hidden behind the back scene are adequate sidings to hold 12 different trains. The station is constructed below the town with only the platforms ends showing below the station canopy. This creates the impression of a large station area but is in fact only the return loops to the fiddle yard 8 21 14 LAST MINUTE CROSSING N ( 160 / 9) Keith Harcourt, Andy Dancy, John Hooker, Harry Stroud and Mike Tame Uckfield Model Railway 43 15 LIVIANO H0 (87.1 / 16.5) LONG PONDERING JUNCTION 00 (76.2 / 16.5) Andrew Dancy, Uckfield Model Railway Alan Marlow, London Finally after many years of collecting stock, looking at photos and even travelling on the real thing I‟ve at last got round to building my first Italian layout, with I must add, the combined knowledge, help and expertise of many friends in the Italian Railways Society. So why Liviano ? Well my niece is called Olivia and we always call her Livvy so I thought Liviano sounded like a suitable name for an Italian town. The layout is eight feet in length with a four foot long fiddle yard at each end. Everything folds together in order for it to fit a medium sized saloon car although I must admit an estate would allow me another scenic board or two. I‟ve used Rimini Models building kits wherever possible along with some scratchbuilt low relief ones along the backscene. The main part of the station building is a Minitalia Kit but I have made some extension pieces to make it more impressive. The grey fencing opposite the café is a genuine Italian artisan white metal product. Track is Peco code 75 but I‟ve cut through every sleeper tie and re-spaced the sleepers to give a less uniform look to the trackbed. Woodland Scenics medium grey ballast (ref: B81 ) has been used on the track which itself sits on a 1mm card underlay. Points are operated by SEEP point motors modified to give a more reliable switch to the frog polarity. All over the layout I have tried to use subtle colours to portray a sun drenched little town somewhere near the Adriatic coast. A lot of the grass is Woodland Scenics yellow turf (ref: T43 )and I‟ve used Tamiya acrylic paints for the buildings, usually starting with white and just adding enough orange or red to get a sort of pale cream or terracotta finish. The rolling stock comes from the usual suspects, Roco D345, Lima Aln 668 railcar, Rivarossi D245 shunter plus a couple of Aln 772 railcars from GT Modelli. The whole thing runs quite well because the points are all of the live frog variety and I‟ve used heavy gauge wire for all the track feeds. The layout is analogue rather than digital and all movements are controlled from a small mimic diagram at one end. 44 ITALIAN RAILWAYS SOCIETY SOCIETY Membership Secretary: Joe Romano, 1A Clyde Road, Wood Green, London, N22 7AD The society has its own regular newsletter and also organises trips to Italy, especially at the time of steam hauled special trains. Eastleigh Model Railway Show Incorporating Fleming Park Leisure Centre, Eastleigh Saturday 26 February 2011 Sunday 27 February 2011 2011 Andrew has been going round in circles for twenty years thinking about, (or pondering on), this layout and the thought of this exhibition galvanised him into action. Joking, apart, this layout was inspired 20 years ago when Andrew visited an exhibition and saw a layout built completely on a curve and there the idea was born. Everything you see on this layout can be purchased from any good model shop and it could even have been built starting with a train set. The layout is based on one in Paul Lunn‟s book “Micro Layouts”. 16 OAKWOOD PRESS - OAKWOOD VIDEO LIBRARY TRADE PO Box 13, Usk, Monmouthshire, NP15 1YS Tel: 01291 650444 E-mail: [email protected] After 70 years of publishing transport history, there are now over 170 titles currently in print on railways large and small, canals, trams and buses. The Oakwood Video Library first releases were in 1993, amongst the range is a series on the LSWR main line. 17 W.O.R.M, 009 (76.2 / 9) Peter Molyneaux, Ringwood This layout was originally part of a group from Southampton Model Railway Society comprising four modules of 4ft x 2ft baseboards linking together to form a large working layout. It was named WORM as an acronym of the surnames of the builders. This layout was exhibited in Bournemouth in 1971 after which it disappeared into storage. Having discovered my board in the loft I felt it would be an interesting exercise to rebuild / refurbish this part of the layout. In order to make a complete scheme two new boards were made to flank the original module enabling the outer circuit of the plan to be complete. At the time 009 narrow gauge was very popular but as little in the way of proprietary buildings were available most of the structures were scratch built. The original buildings required some restoration and the church which had been a kit but was badly damaged, was replaced. In order to match the home made furnish the structures on the new boards were also hand built. Having been in contact with one of the original team I was able to obtain a selection or original stock which forms the backbone of the services running today. As a restoration project some of the detail is a little crude by current standards but this it is hoped conveys a vintage charm. Remember to note the date in your diary 20 Fax: 01291 650484 9 18 40 This very old English Cider Mill with its narrow gauge railway, which today hauls gravel from a nearby pit, is actually based on a design from America. In other words the design was stolen from Carl Arendt‟s wonderful website, but we‟ll draw a veil over that. The Mill opened in 1729 and had a great reputation for very, very potent cider. The famous Pink Perry which was also made here and drunk by the Royle Family at 27 Sidebottom Road, Ramsbottom. High quality industrial gravel, (also used as budgie grit and cat litter), arrives by narrow gauge railway and is automatically tipped into standard gauge wagons which disappear into a tunnel beneath the Mill. The Alte Zeit Gruppe, The Historical German Railway Group, is a worldwide English language society for enthusiast and modellers of German railways of primarily 1835-1960. It was founded in 1992 to provide a focal point for these interests. COLUMBIA & WESTERN RAILWAY – CASCADE YARD 0n30 (48 / 19) Bob Harper & Bob Deakin “CASCADE YARD” is the small, portable part of my 220ft home layout depicting 3ft narrow gauge operation in the Rockies in southern British Columbia. Historically, the Columbia & Western Railway ran from the silver mining area around Rossland to the smelter at Trail on the Columbia River. My fiction is that the narrow gauge prospered as a joint CP/GN line, and the branch extended to tap the timber stands and mines in the mountains around Cascade Lake; so that timber traffic, ore from the Soggy Bottom Mining Co, general freight and passenger traffic from the growing tourist trade mean that I have an excuse to run anything I like! Built to American ¼ inch to the foot scale, i.e. 1/48th, the track is all handbuilt to ¾ inch gauge. Most of the locos are brass imports from the Far-East, whereas a fair proportion of the rolling-stock is from the excellent Bachmann ON30 range, re-gauged from 16.5mm. As time allows, this will all be super-detailed and re-painted. Scenically the layout is based on the dramatic cliff faces on the Kettle Valley route a bit further west. The major feature of the layout is the digital command control (DCC) operation, which allows full light and sound effects to be incorporated into the locos. At previous exhibitions, I have been persuaded to hand over control to eager viewers, so it is possible that you may be able to have a go at blowing the whistles yourself. 20 GLENWOOD SPRINGS 0n30 (48 / 16.5) 41 RIVERSIDE TT (120 / 12) Dave Harris & John O‟Dellitts, Basingstoke This is a 'continental' TT scale (1:120) model railway layout that represents the German West Rhine railway double track line running along the West bank of the river Rhine, in the gorge South of Koblenz, by the Loreley. Richard Pretious, Alton This a freelance layout of American Narrow Gauge Railroad. The railroads included in this layout are Colorado and Southern, Denver Rio Grande Western, etc. The layout is fully DCC operated via Digitrax control system. Buildings are constructed from wood kits, trackwork is Peco 0-16.5 using Peco point motors with auxiliary switches to ensure good reliable operation. 10 19 35 LEGO RAILWAY A big thank you for members of the Benelux railway supplying a Lego railway to fill the space of St Anne's layout The owner of St Anne's had to withdraw due to illness. Viewing the layout from left to right you can see railway cottages next to a goods line leading to a small factory. This is followed by a loco shed also with good sidings and then a mainline station. At the right hand end in front of the fiddle yard is another station with two platforms. The layout has working street lights and signals. 23 CHEDWAY 00 (76.2 / 16.5) Andy Jones, Burnham & District MRC, Bridgewater, Somerset Chedway is a fictitious country town station somewhere in SW England. It is on a mainline through route as well as a terminus for local branch lines from Newburn and Oddsan End. It is the local market town and the collecting point for produce and traffic to and from local rural areas. Being by the sea, there is considerable holiday passenger traffic during the summer months. The small fishing harbour and the nearby cargo-handling wharf give rise to round the year freight traffic. The line is used by GWR and some LSW passenger trains, with the occasional LMS excursion! The line is twin track with a passing loop in the station. Local branch-line trains cross the „up‟ line to arrive in the terminus, making the return journey on the „up‟ line. Freight trains also cross the „up‟ line to reach the goods-yards. Re-fuelled and watered locos can pull out of the engine-shed to couple up to coaches in the terminus for the return journey, the incoming loco later passing to the engine shed for re-fuelling and water. Colour light signals indicate point setting or, controlled from control panel, stop the train if on red. Track is Peco Code 100 Streamline and points Peco electrofrog changed by Peco motor. Low relief buildings, station, bridges and boats are scratch built, the engine shed and goods shed are from Ratio kits. Colour light signals are from Econ kits or Econ lights on Airfix gantry. The castle ruin is Hornby. 11 24 IRON HORSE PRODUCTIONS TRADE 77 Tilney Close, Alton, GU34 2BG Telephone: 01420 88005 „Preserved Railways and mainline steam and diesel as well as other transport DVDs. 25 GERALD SAVINE TRADE 11 Welland Gardens, Welland, Malvern, WR13 6LB, Website: www.geraldsavine.ukf.net e-mail: [email protected]. The layout will be using a working timetable based on prototype practice, including passenger, freight and mixed trains. Description: The small (fictional) town of Småtorp is a busy little industrial town cantered on Forrest products. It the terminus of a branch from the Halmstad Nässjö Railway main line at Oskarstrom. The line was built to serve Småtorps Bruk AB who operate a paper mill behind the station. As a subsidiary activity they also have a sawmill and a small furniture factory. There is also a light engineering company in the town that send products out by rail. The train services provided on the layout are based on 1930‟s operating practice. Passenger services are manly provided by railbusses and include a daily working to and from Halmstad by the HNJ‟s pride and joy one of the new NOHAB high-speed railbusses. Freight services include a mixed freight and serve the two other stations on the branch as well as Småtorp. The layout will appeared in Continental Modeller during the autumn of 2008 The track plan for Småtorp is based on Hyltebruk station. 12 33 AUSTRIAN RAILWAY GROUP SOCIETY Membership Secretary: H.G. "Wildschönau" means "Wild and Beautiful" valley. This Wildschönau is an HOe layout representing Austrian narrow gauge railways and tries to give an impression of the scenery of the area. The Austrian narrow gauge railway of the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn ends at Krimml, an extension was proposed but never built. This layout assumes that the railway was extended past Krimml 38 Km to join the Zillertalbahn at Zell Am Ziller. This extended railway provides a scenic route for tourists visiting the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Krimmler Falle waterfalls. In the summer there are lots of visitors taking advantage of the valley and hill walks, and also more challenging hikes to mountain peaks. The through trains are hauled by 2095 diesel locomotives and the local passenger service handled by 5090 type diesel railcars. Freight is handled by a mixture of older locomotives including the type 2091 diesel locomotive. The regular steam specials are run by the local preservation society. With the closure or privatisation of many of Austria‟s narrow gauge railways there are always visiting trains from other railways. This layout was featured as “Railway of the Month” in Continental Modeller November 2006 and also featured on the Railway Modeller\Continental Modeller CD in January 2008. 17 31 27 FURKA OBERALP H0n (87.1 / 12) Ian Edwards, Cumbria Set somewhere on the Swiss Furka Oberalp Bahn, Between Andermat and Disentis, the layout features working rack and pinion operation allowing the trains to climb approximately 3 feet as they wind their way around the layout, With UP and Down trains passing each other at the small station which is also served by Funicular railway. Following on from our large club layout “Oberfriedhof” the baseboards have been built at 45degrees. It also is a test bed for an operating system which has at its heart a programmable logic chip. Developed by members of the Furness Model Railway Club, it allows a sequence of trains to be run automatically. If you have any questions about this or any other aspect of the layout don‟t hesitate to ask any of the operators. 32 KÖLN USW H0 (87.1 / 16.5) Andrew Knights, Steyning, West Sussex Along with my other exhibition layouts, Köln USW, is constructed in a folding box, two metres by a foot. In this space I have tried to recreate the sort of semi-bucolic scene found in the Köln-Bonn hinterland. An area of rivers, ponds and large chemical works factories, and, yes, countryside! The scene before you shows a small station on a recently singled secondary line in this area. In theory it runs to connect with the site of another layout Köln Vorstellbar. Various multiple units may be seen running over the embanked line. Passengers are few at the small station. It sees trippers and those interested in ein Kleiner Bummell. It is only busy when the schools finish for the afternoon or at factory shift change times. The main activity takes place in the exchange sidings below. This is where wagons are sorted and swapped between the factory lines and those of the local Hafen und Guterwerk Köln (HGK) line. The cars are switched by either the HGK trip engine or the little KöF shunter, sold into industrial life. The line is a form of “Inglenook” though different due to its double ended nature. The wagons are sorted according to a simple picture card system. First in a session utilising the HGK locomotive and next by the Bayer Köf. This is repeated etc (Und So Weite) The couplings used within the freight yard are the European version of Kadee‟s. If you have any questions about ”Layouts You Can Live With“, German modelling or this layout in particular, do ask the operator. Originally designed as a through station, the rest of the line was never completed so the tunnel at one end of the station is only a headshunt. The line is quite busy however with frequent passenger trains and freight trains from a number of Swiss railway companies, serving the cement silo and the loading dock. There is also an occasional "G" train (mixed passenger/ freight) hauled by an ancient Krocodile locomotive. 13 14 15
