TRENDS POLO CLUB B o c a R at o n Winter 2014/2015 With sincere gratitude, I would like to thank the entire staff that worked so hard to accomplish this beautiful renovation. I would also like to thank all of our Members for their patience & support throughout the entire process. It was certainly worth the wait! Polo Feeds the Hungry Continuing a 30-year tradition of serving the less fortunate a hearty, wholesome meal during the holidays, Polo Club contributed to the 2014 “Feed the Hungry” celebration. On Nov. 25, Polo Club donated 35 large pans of stuffing and 1,500 dinner rolls to a community-wide Thanksgiving feast, which fed thousands. Organized by Congregation B’nai Israel and Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church of Boca Raton, the dinner welcomed people from Boca Raton and surrounding cities to dine in fellowship. The annual event is made possible by corporate and volunteer donations and by a collaborative outpouring from organizations such as Polo Club, Jim and Jan Moran Boys and Girls Clubs, Pines in the South, The Lord’s Place, Milagro Center, Family Promise, Cros Ministries Caring Kitchen and Boca Helping Hands. CONTENTS M essage From Brett LETTERS 1 Message from the GM/COO 36 In the Know Ladies and Gentlemen, I am happy to report that our Clubhouse renovation is finally complete. With the opening of An American Bistro and The Crown Room in December, our Members will once again enjoy full use of all venues and amenities. The project came in on time and ahead of budget — a truly significant achievement. As those who were here this summer will attest, this renovation was no small undertaking. When we decided to move next year’s phase into this year, our contractors and interior designers had to accelerate not only their pace of work, but all aspects of the project, ensuring orders were placed and deliveries were made on time. Even though we received our TCO (Temporary Certificate of Occupancy) which allows our Members and staff to occupy the renovated spaces, we still need to complete some finishing touches. We will continue to work on punch list items for the next couple of months, doing our best to minimize any inconvenience to our Membership. I’d like to express my sincere appreciation to the Board, our management team and staff for their support and cooperation during this transformation of our Club. Together, we were able to provide almost uninterrupted service to those Members who remained at Polo over the summer. Golf, Tennis, Spa, the Pool, Card Rooms, Barefoot Cafe and Administration all remained available, with the exception of a few days. We received many compliments on how little inconvenience the renovation caused. Lastly, I’d like to thank you, our Members, for giving us the opportunity to renovate your facilities. Polo’s clubhouse now has a fresh new look and feel, as well as additional venues and amenities for you to enjoy. Please mark your calendars for the Renovation Celebration on December 13 — you will not want to miss this party! Your management team is planning something very special to showcase the new offerings in every department. As a ‘Thank You’ for your patience and understanding during the construction, there will be no charge for this event, with the exception of alcoholic beverages. On behalf of the Management team and staff, we wish you happy holidays and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year! Give the Gift of Reading. Polo’s General Manager Brett Morris, accepting recognition plaque from Achievement Centers for Children and Families Foundation of Delray Beach. “The number of books a child has in his or her home is a greater indication of their future success in life; even more than a parent’s educational level,” said Abigail Goodwin, executive director for The Achievement Centers for Children and Families, as she accepted more than 3,500 children’s books from The Polo Club’s Community Relations Committee. The donation — an outstanding result of a comprehensive book drive — was made at a special November 4th ceremony, during which the 19-member committee was honored with a plaque and applause. The Achievement Centers for Children and Families of Delray Beach is a community-based social service agency that provides affordable childcare. The Polo Club Community Relations Committee has become an integral partner with the centers, helping to address societal needs. Members organized a massive book drive “The Members of the Community Relations Committee began the ‘Reading Enrichment’ project this past summer by scouring the Internet for sites that offered free books and grants to purchase books,” said Bob Leff, committee co-chair. “In addition, we wrote to corporate offices, Big Box stores, the White House, local businesses, libraries, and the Literacy Center, requesting book donations. Most of all, we requested that our fellow residents of the Polo Club of Boca Raton donate new or slightly-used children's books to our project.” According to Roni Brockman, committee chair, the relationship began when a Polo Member suggested that the committee members volunteer to read to children and provide books to schools. As a result, Members will visit the Pine Grove Elementary School in early 2015, and the book drive is an ongoing project. Foster a love of reading this season Members who wish to donate new children’s books this holiday season are encouraged to contact Bob Leff at 561-865-7060. “While you’re shopping for your loved ones, please remember that one additional book can make a world of difference for a child in our community,” Brockman said. Amid the elegance and style of Polo’s “Putting on the Ritz” luncheon and fashion show, a serious battle will be taking place – the fight against cancer. Each person in attendance will be contributing to the research of finding a cure for a disease that continually takes people too soon. Polo residents Barbara and Arnold Cohen know this all too well. As the honorees of the Jan. 19 “Putting on the Ritz” event, being chaired by Iris Schaum, the Cohens hope to build awareness and support for their philanthropic work with The PAP Corps. Each person in attendance will be contributing to the research of finding a cure for a disease that continually takes people too soon. Polo residents Barbara and Arnold Cohen know this all too well. As the honorees of the Jan. 19th “Putting on the Ritz” event, being chaired by Iris Schaum, the Cohens hope to build awareness and support for their philanthropic work with The PAP Corps. CANCER HIT CLOSE TO HOME Barbara Cohen serves on the PAP Corps Board of Directors, and Arnold Cohen is a member of good standing with the volunteer fundraising organization. Their involvement is born of personal experience with cancer and its devastating effect. Barbara’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, her father with melanoma. A number of their close friends and family members have battled cancer successfully and unsuccessfully. The Cohens lost three sisters-in-law to the disease. The Cohens themselves have been under siege. Barbara, like her father, was treated for melanoma, and Arnold was diagnosed with melanoma and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, an incurable, but treatable, form of cancer. Arnold is currently in remission. To contribute to a solution, the Cohens began work with The PAP Corps. EVERY PENNY RAISED WILL GO TO RESEARCH “It was a wonderful organization that was trying to find a cure for cancer,” Barbara Cohen said. “We believe in doing as much as we can, in hopes that there will be a cure one day. While we can never get back the loved ones we lost, with research and perseverance, maybe we can prevent more heart-breaking losses in the future.” At the stylish fundraiser, the Cohens and Mrs. Schaum hope to raise more than $130,000 benefiting The Pap Corps, Polo Club Chapter. “This will be a spectacular event with more than 500 attendees. If members would like to support beyond attending, there is still time to be part of the event journal,” Schaum said. “Every penny raised will go towards cancer research.” “Putting on the Ritz” Fashion Show & Gala Luncheon honoring Barbara & Arnold Cohen, benefitting The PAP Corps Polo Club Chapter January 19, 2015 4 T ime: 11:00 a.m. Place: The Laurels at The Polo Club Cost: $150 per person RSVP: Iris Schaum, Luncheon Chairperson, [email protected] Winter 2014/15 | TRENDS MAGAZINE I n t r o d u c i n g t h e S p r i n g 2 0 1 5 C o l l e c t i o n o f Ta h a r i At the January 19 “Putting on the Ritz” Fashion Show & Gala Luncheon, the 2015 spring collection of Elie Tahari will take center stage, thanks to the special relationship between the designer and honorees Arnold and Barbara Cohen. Arnold Cohen worked as a trusted accountant, trusted adviser and friend for Tahari, who rose to global acclaim from humble beginnings. “Arnold is not just an accountant,” said Tahari. “He is a man with a heart.” Tahari grew up in an Israeli orphanage and made his way to New York City with less than $100 in his pocket. While moonlighting at a boutique in Greenwich Village in the 1970s, he was introduced to the world of fashion and started his label with flirty dance dresses. In 1974, he opened his first boutique on Madison Avenue, and in the 1980s, his tailored suit designs redefined a decade. Today, Tahari continues to delight women with styles inspired by his belief that clothing should be quieter than the woman, so that her true beauty can shine through. From awarding full scholarships to worthy students attending Brandeis University and the Fashion Institute of Technology to funding medical-health services in Israel, the couple seeks ways to help those who are trying to bring about positive change. The Cohens’ work with the PAP Corps was born of personal loss and their own fights with cancer, but their chosen passions are in the arts, culture and their heritage. Tara Perry, Polo’s new Children’s Activities Supervisor • Graduate of State University of New York, Brockport • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in sports management • Former family event planner • Seeks to add programming for all ages to the CAC offerings “The Polo Club has always focused on kids 3-8 years of age, but there hasn’t been a lot of planned activities for older kids who are nine to 12, or teenagers, ages 13-16,” said Perry, Polo’s new Children’s Activities Director. Tweaking programs, so everyone is invited With a background in event planning, Perry will introduce more activities geared for all age groups. Scavenger hunts, trivia challenges, and story walks are in the works to promote more family interaction. Adults are also invited, and not just mom and dad. Perry plans to expand popular events, like Daddy & Daughter dances, to “The Man in My Life” socials, so along with fathers, uncles, and grandfathers will also receive an invitation. “I want Members to know that on a daily basis there is something for everyone,” she said. “There will be activities for every grandchild, whether they are three or 16.” What Members love will remain While new ideas are always welcome, many of the things that Members love about the Children Activity Center will remain the same. Perry is impressed with the affection Members show to Center staff, the quality of programming and the attention to Member satisfaction. To accommodate the increase in guests during the holiday season, two additional people will be on staff temporarily, and Members can look forward to an expanded roster of organized activities, including field games, croquet, bocce ball, washers, KanJam, Cornhole, and Ladder ball. “It is my pleasure to give kids things to do that make them happy. When children are happy and having fun, their parents are going to be happy too. “It is a win-win situation.” PoloClub.net 11 Pat Breton receiving email on “Technology Box”. “A lot more useful golf swing data and measurements, made possible through new technologies, is available at The Polo Club.” — Tom Haase, Director of Golf BY TOM HAASE, DIRECTOR OF GOLF The old phrase “a picture’s worth a thousand words,” describes the best technology available during the last century. That picture, be it a still photo or a video, could only produce the “thousand words” through study by the human eye. Is that good enough? Not bad, but there is a lot more useful golf swing data and measurements available through new technologies now available at The Polo Club. We all know that too much information in the wrong hands leads to disaster, so the most valuable and effective tool is a trained and certified professional staff. For game improvement the teacher must be able to analyze the data, properly explain the relevance to the student, create a game plan for improvement, and measure the success. The Polo Club professional staff has attended numerous seminars, training sessions, and webinars in order to become proficient and certified to use this equipment. This package of new technological devices and a commitment to thorough staff education is exclusive to the Polo Club. THE K-VEST 3-D SWING ANALYSIS K-VEST and TPI 3-D software developed by the Titleist Performance Institute, is a 3-D motion capture system that accurately analyzes the 3-D motion of a golfer’s swing and sees movement from any angle without the need for multiple video cameras. The 12 Winter 2014/15 | TRENDS MAGAZINE Polo Golf swing sequence report instantly illustrates the cause of distance and accuracy issues. Players are able to see, easily understand, and change the sequencing of their swing through auditory biofeedback when the desired positions are achieved. Very important to many of our Members, the K-VEST also measures swing efficiency and gives insight to physical and functional limitations affecting movement. Through this information our Golf Professional can partner with our fitness professionals and deliver a customized exercise and strengthening program. FLIGHTSCORE 3-D DOPPLER TRACKING GOLF RADAR More commonly referred to as a launch monitor, this system has been widely used by our Staff as a ball tracking device for custom club fittings. New technology upgrades have added tracking designed to help our professionals analyze your swing by measuring 24 variables related to your ball, club or swing. Some examples would be ball speed, launch angle, carry distance, roll, club speed, face angle, angle of attack, and more. Trained use this of information honestly answers the questions: “Did that swing really cure my slice?” and “Will that Club hit the ball longer that mine?” BODITRAK BodiTrak is a new piece of technology that can be used as a standalone teaching aid or be coupled with our New Wireless FLIGHTSCOPE. This pressure sensitive mat captures as a golfer’s balance pattern, distribution of weight on feet, and basic transfer of weight in order to create more solid and powerful golf shots. Staff can use the pressure mat for almost any golf situation uphill, downhill, and even on a green or in a bunker. ES 12/14 LAUNCH MONITOR This Launch Monitor is a simpler version of our FLIGHTSCORE system which still gives you the pertinent information such as ball speed, spin rate, launch angle, smash factor, club speed and distance. This can be used as a quick set up during lessons so that the student can see the results of each swing. A huge benefit is that the player can see the direct results, in numbers, of a swing change the professional is working to incorporate into their swing. Picture on Top Right: Boditrak being used to help feel proper weight distribution at impact. Picture on Bottom Right: K-Vest is showing the student how the “top of the backswing” should feel. I-PAD Traditional video cameras are a thing of the past, thanks to Apple’s I-PAD. With a wide arrange of APPS for golf swing analysis, staff can easily utilize this simple and effective way to record a golfer’s swing and provide immediate feedback. The use of I-PADS to record swings of students can be stored as a history and used to demonstrate progress. This video can also be sent directly to our Members via e-mail. In the words of Head Professional Sherry Zimet, “Teaching with technology mirrors every other aspect of our lives. It empowers people to do what they want to do and it helps people learn the things they didn’t think they could.” So, get out our smart phone and call one of our high-tech professionals to update your swing and improve your numbers. PoloClub.net 17 3 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE YOUR GAME BY MICHELLE BROWN New Year often means making the same old resolutions. Instead of a rerun, reboot by focusing your promises on your tennis game. Polo’s tennis staff recommends making these three resolutions the ones to keep: 1 Seek professional instruction and support the current Polo tennis programs. Jean Mills, Director of Tennis and Children’s Activities, estimates that only about 25 percent of Members take advantage of the intramurals and mixed-doubles play that the club offers, despite the fact that playing against different styles is one of the best ways to improve your play. “Players need knowledge, continuing education and practice with that knowledge to improve,” Mills said. Whether you opt for a group clinic or private lessons, hitting walls or the ball machines, Polo’s tennis programs are varied and comprehensive. Someone is always available to rally the ball with you. 18 Polo offers four complimentary programs where a staff pro sets up the play — intramurals are on Fridays; Mixed Doubles on Sundays; and on Wednesdays is match.com. Saturdays is the free stroke clinic. Polo also hosts a monthly complimentary Stroke Clinic with a pro, along with a monthly complimentary doubles mixer that includes lunch for the players. 3 on and off the courts. 2 Small gestures, such as waiting until the previous player exits the courts before you begin play, go a long way towards maintaining a positive and welcoming atmosphere, especially when other teams are visiting Polo. Focus on improving your game. Yes, winning is decidedly better than losing, but don’t focus on it. Make improvement, not victory, the goal. Polo’s tennis pros say one of the fastest ways to improve is to watch other people play. Also find a way to get more balls in play and play against those with very different styles. If you lob, seek a partner who hits harder. If you’re a baseliner, team up with someone who serves and volleys. Winter 2014/15 | TRENDS MAGAZINE Be a better sport and competitor, Ah… frustration. On the tennis courts, this fierce emotion has been known to lay waste to the best of behaviors, but it can be tamed. In 2015, resolve to learn and practice proper tennis etiquette, convey good sportsmanship and treat others as you wish to be treated, on and off the court. “At Polo, we strive to embody integrity and character,” Mills said. “When you’re on the courts, you are always setting an example for anyone who is watching.” DECEMBER 5, 2014 (Friday) Fall Golf School Session 3 DECEMBER 6, 2014 (Saturday) Fall Golf School Session 3 DECEMBER 12, 2014 (Friday) Fall Golf School Session 4 DECEMBER 13, 2014 (Saturday) Fall Golf School Session 4 DECEMBER 19, 2014 (Friday) Fall Golf School Session 5 DECEMBER 21-24 2014 DECEMBER 26-31 2014 JANUARY 2 & 3 2015 Junior Camp JANUARY 15, 2015 (Thursday) Men's Member/Guest FEBRUARY 3, 2015 (Tuesday) Men's Member/Guest MARCH 22, 2015 (Sunday) Mixed Couples Member/Guest DECEMBER 20, 2014 (Saturday) Fall Golf School Session 5 UPCOMING TENNIS EVENTS GIFT GAME MATCH The Resort and Tennis Shoppe at Polo is your very own holiday gift-giving helper. Harriet Slater for Chef Pakin Pongsanit, the new sushi chef at The Polo Club of Boca Raton, the secret to good sushi is as much in the rice, seaweed, and vinegar as it is in the fish. “The seaweed has to be roasted properly, about 65 percent,” he gives as an example. Another detail is that the Tamanishiki rice must be rinsed with cold water until crystal clear. BRINGING SUSHI FROM IRON CHEF TO POLO It was this precision and attention to detail that caught the eye of Executive Chef Michael Schenk, who reached out to Pongsanit, who had been serving as sushi chef at the Boca Raton Resort & Club since 2008. During his tenure there, he was one of two sushi chefs chosen by Iron Chef Morimoto to run Morimoto’s restaurant at the 2013 U.S. Open Tennis Championships in New York City, serving up to 1,200 people per day. Pongsanit made the move to Polo for the expanded resources and freedom. “I create my own menu and sauces,” he said. “Everything is on me.” Inspiration for his sushi, sashimi and maki rolls comes from his love of experimentation and available local sources of fish, Wahoo being the best local fish,” he said, which accounts for about 25 percent of the ingredients. The balance of the fish is sourced from Japan. CREATING A FUSION OF CULTURES AND FLAVORS “The different thing is that my sushi is not traditional sushi, but a fusion, so it means a bit of variety - a little bit of Latin, Asian and Italian,” Pongsanit said. His creations include the “Pacific Rim” with crispy shrimp, crab salad, BBQ eel and apple cider Kabayaki sauce, and the “Tsunami” with steamed spinach, cooked salmon, shiitake mushrooms and roasted garlic. SUSHI BAR’S MOBILITY EXPANDS OPTIONS & EXCELLENCE The decision to add a sushi bar to Polo’s selection of restaurants came primarily from observation. "Every time we have an event, one of our biggest draws is a sushi bar,” said Executive Chef Schenk. “Sushi’s popularity with events was also factored into the new bar itself. Although it is based in the Winner’s Circle restaurant, it is moblie and can be relocated anywhere within the resort.” For Schenk, however, the new addition ties smartly into the overall philosophy of the Polo Club’s restaurants, which is “to provide our Members with the best possible culinary and dining experience.” 22 Winter 2014/15 | TRENDS MAGAZINE SUSHI : Pakin A Punch! Translation: knock in a ball on the break shot and continue to pocket each ball (total of 9) in numerical succession, thus clearing the table. It is not an easy feat. But easily done by great shooters of the past, memorably Willy Mosconi and Minnesota Fats. Now Lenny Pazol of our billiards league accomplished the same in our first match with Valencia Palms! The League, which is captained by Irwin Klar and Richie Issacson, will field two 6-man teams to compete in the 9-Ball South County League with other local clubs. Each captain’s team will compete on alternate Monday nights. The Polo Billiards League is available to all Members. Monday nights are scheduled for open play, except on those nights when Polo is hosting a visiting club. Tuesday nights are for organized tournaments with achievement reward prizes and bragging rights. Knocking in the 9-ball on the break gets your name on the wall plaque. Points won during matches accumulate during the season for the ultimate winner. Additionally, a Championship event is held at the season’s end for the best A and B players. All Polo members are encouraged to participate in all events, for a bit of laughter, moaning and groaning in an age-old sport now at Polo. Members can also avail themselves of a free clinic on Thursdays, hosted by Richie Isaacson. Jerry Dwosh, Tournament and Publicity Director PoloClub.net 31 B ehind the Scenes A Protective Presence After 20 years on the job, Ron Martin, Polo’s Safety and Security Coordinator, knows that when the phone rings, he and the G4S officers can resolve almost any problem — whatever it might be. Polo’s Security Team has responded to approximately 3,700 calls, year to date Cardiac arrest, slip and falls, sports injuries, dehydration, dizziness and simply scary accidents warrant a rapid response from Ron Martin and the G4S security team that serve Polo’s members. Project Manager Issacs Sanchez, who heads G4S’ security contingent, has been with the Polo Club for 15 years, and Linden Redley, lead paramedic lieutenant, has served at The Polo Club for 10 years. During that time, the three men have led a 30-person staff, dedicated to keeping Members safe and secure. WE DON’T SAY NO “We have responded to more than 450 medical or medical assist calls this year. In many cases, our paramedics arrive before Fire Rescue because both services receive the call simultaneously. Often, Members call our internal emergency number first,” Martin said. “Numerous other communities have inquired of us, in regard to establishing a paramedic program, confirming that Polo Club is a leader in the field.” G4S personnel on property are highly trained with many having criminal justice, military or law enforcement backgrounds, as well as CPR/AED certifications. The paramedic team will respond to numerous medical-related emergencies, including heart palpitations and heat exhaustion. But what Polo Club residents have come to expect is an elevated level of personal care that often exceeds a professional emergency response. “We are trained to respond to any request,” Mr. Sanchez said. “We’ve caught snakes, assisted with technical support on alarm systems and jump-started dead batteries. We strive to provide assistance to whatever members or their guests may need.” MEMBERS KNOW WE CARE Lt. Redley recalled coming to the aid of a Canadian Polo member, who had dropped a wrench on her foot and was in need of medical care, but was worried about her international insurance. “I Googled the nearest urgent care center, found that it accepted her insurance, gave her the address, and made sure she had her foot X-rayed,” he said. “The Members know we care about them.” TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT RULES Additional G4S staff, beyond those stationed at Polo Club, address enforcement of posted traffic regulations. The sole purpose of the traffic modification program is to ensure the safety of all who use Polo Club’s main roadways. Both a speed limit of 30 mph on the common area roadways and coming to a complete stop at all stop signs are strictly enforced. Polo Club’s individual communities may have their own speed limits and parking regulations, so drivers are advised to respect all posted traffic signage. Polo Club’s current discipline and fining schedule includes, but is not limited to, the following: 4 Failing to fully stop at intersections and speeding result in a written citation for first time offenses. 4 Subsequent citations result in both a $100 fine and temporary deactivation of the Member’s vehicle’s transponder. 4 For complete details on Polo Club’s traffic enforcement program, please refer to the Security link under Membership on the Polo Club website or contact Ron Martin. 32 Winter 2014/15 | TRENDS MAGAZINE Photo on right from Left to Right: Linden Ridley, Ron Martin and Isaac Sanchez.
